The Best Coffee Bars in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"This low-key but vibey coffee counter, located within Dudley Market near the Venice Beach Boardwalk, offers plentiful indoor seating, vinyls whirring on a record player beneath an iridescent disco ball, and the unmatched artistry of Los Angeles barista Christopher “Nicely” Abel Alameda. Choose from Nicely’s deftly curated menu of classic and original coffee drinks, or have him surprise you with something new. The indecisive can always start somewhere like the Cafe Rico, an espresso drink brightened by orange zest with warmer notes from homemade vanilla and cinnamon." - Mona Holmes

The 16 Best Coffee Shops In LA

"The guy who founded Menotti’s coffee program (and won a few latte art championships) runs this lowkey counter that pops up inside Dudley Market from 8am to 1pm, Wednesday through Sunday. It’s also probably the only time you’ll see Dudley quiet and serene, with scattered people working on laptops and sipping frothy goat milk lattes. If you decide to keep things simple and order a double shot, Nicely (the man himself) serves it in a snifter so you can pick up the espresso’s aroma. He might give you an impromptu lecture on proper espresso-tasting etiquette, too, even if all you came in for was a morning coffee." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder

We came here for a coffee run, and we were so delighted with everything we experienced at Hook’d. The baristas were amazing and so kind. The espresso was deliciously dialed in! Highly recommend this place for your morning coffee stop if you are in the area. The building is beautiful, the music is a vibe and the coffee is amazing! 10/10

Google
Hooked, the name says it all. The coffee shop is ran by one talented individual and an additional talented one from Flow Coffee. These guys utilize their experience and expertise to serve each individual customer a crafted drink which is prepared in front of you, enjoy the experience. I have been to this coffee shop several times now, service and quality have not declined but rather improved. If you’re a coffee nerd, a connoisseur, or whatever label you identify yourself as with regard to coffee, then this coffee shop is a must. Easily within my top 3 coffee shops in California. As always, I drop a bit of crumbs to my readers, here are three. One, try their salted caramel latte, it’s honestly their most slept on drink although it does get sold out before Sunday. Second, their brewed coffee is nearly identical to many other coffee shops Pour-Overs, a must. Third crumb, Abel (owner of hooked), is a 3 times latte art world champion, another reason why Hooked is such a slept on location. Thank me later, with a coffee.

Google
TLDR: Good coffee, a little pricey. Worth a visit on your Venice beach outing. I had very high hopes since this place came recommended. However parking is mess so it's not a convenient spot to get by. Also be prepared to wait for as much as 15 minutes, even if 2 people are ahead in the line. The staff takes their coffee seriously and does not take shortcuts. Their espresso is stellar. Cappuccino is better than average (for the price). Latte is better than average too (for the price). 3 drinks for $30 with tip places this shop at the premium end of the spectrum. Would I go back? Definitely for the espresso and other drinks that I have not tried, but more likely when I am already in the neighborhood. Service is friendly and nice. There are signs that discourage you to bring your laptop and prefer that you do not work there. It's meant to spark conversation. I felt welcome and not rushed, even though it was a chaotic visit, 10 minutes before closing.

Google
Mocha is so good! Competition flat white is so smooth and rich.

Google
Incredibly rude staff, makes up prices and rules, and makes up service dog ADA rules which is so illegal, I’m disappointed. I’ve never felt less welcome as someone that has a service dog. My friends were also treated poorly because of my dog. Barista kept coming over to make sure she was “under the table,” which also isn’t a law. She was out of the way, obviously well behaved since she’s professionally trained. It happens every time I go in there and now won’t be going back. Advice to barista, don’t make people with disabilities feel small and don’t treat them like shit.

Google
Five stars for the delicious Scarlet latte, one star for how insanely slow it was to get our drinks, one star for the pricing, which was absolutely outrageously expensive for a tiny 8 oz drink, and three stars for the space, which is cute, but gets crazy loud when they get busy. No outdoor seating.

Google
The best coffee I have ever had. It’s a coffee experience! I had a chance to try 12 different coffees. Nicely is clearly very passionate about coffee and makes you the perfect cup. Tip: don’t order for to go, sit there to get the full experience!

Google
Wow this place is above amazing. Living in NYC many years this is beating all coffee shops I went there all together. Coffee Rico is the way to go!

Yelp
These baristas are so professional. The drink is perfectly and carefully crafted. This is a place to trust the baristas and just go with the menu. I loved my mocha! Not too sweet, rich, and the touch of maldon salt on top really enhanced the flavor. It's petite but we savored every sip! I love the peaceful vibes. Parking can be tough, it's Venice Beach.

Yelp

Yelp
This place is one of the only places I've been excited to try everything on the menu. I have not had the same thing twice. Each experience is a little more of an adventure because I'm curious how they can make every recipe that I've had from so many places, the best possible version of it. I do not like lines and waiting, and there is always a line and a wait, and it's obnoxiously worth it, I recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience near perfect craftsmanship. Dudley market is also a lovely place to sit and enjoy the space. The atmosphere is curated well to be enjoyable and easy with good tunes. I have and will drive an hour to go to this coffee shop. I was spoiled when I lived with in a bike ride distance.

Yelp
The coffee here has been on my mind everyday since I've had it. Unfortunately, it is an hour away from where I live but if it was closer, I would become a regular. The vanilla latte is literally the best I've had. The barista, who may be the owner (wish I had asked,) was so passionate and put a lot of love into making each cup of coffee and you could just tell he loved every second of it. If you're in a rush, this isn't the spot to go to. It does take a bit longer to get your drink since the same person taking the orders was also checking you out at the register and making your drink. But if you have that extra time then I'd 10/10 recommend coming here. The vibe of the cafe is amazing, super clean and very kind staff. A gentleman individually brought out water for all the guests as soon as they were seated without even asking. Smiles all around.

Yelp
There's no surprise that I'm already Hooked on this Venice Beach coffee shop. This coffee/wine combo spot serves up wine in the evening and espresso in the morning/afternoon. The space is super aesthetic, offers live music, comfy furniture, and quirky decor. They're on the newer side and have a pretty limited coffee menu. I kept things simple and ordered a vanilla latte and oak milk. It was 10/10. Sadly they dont offer food at the moment and I'd love to see them partner with a lock bakery to serve pastries in the mornings.

Yelp
Came here Sunday with a group of folks to grab coffee. The place is cute with some nice records. Since there is technically one barista, it took a long time to get coffee. After waiting in line 30 minutes I ended up getting an Americano and a French toast donut. The Americano was decent. I believe their beans are from a place called Dune. The French Toast donut was excellent! I was really glad I got that because even though they said they added sweetener to my coffee, it wasn't sweet (they don't have sugar or sugar substitute). The total for my donut and coffee was about $13 which I think is too pricey.

Yelp
So good I had to order one for the road. This place sits on a quaint corner a few steps away from the beach and is a whole ass vibe. Genuine and delicious we ordered the mocha which was topped with shaved dark chocolate and sea salt which blended together beautifully. The salt and the shaved chocolate danced in my mouth as the expresso balanced the mood bringing a full body flavor in each sip. The service was 100/10 authentic and customer focused. Would recommend trying

Yelp
Great service and amazing coffee. Love the records in rotation and the ambiance. I always look forward to coming here when I'm in the area.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Nestled away, it might be a bit challenging to find, but once you step inside, the vibes make it all worthwhile. The cortado/espresso, crafted with Ethiopian coffee from Dune Coffee, was exceptional. The barista was not only friendly but also impressively knowledgeable about their coffee selection. While the drinks are slightly pricier than neighboring shops, the quality more than justifies it. Can't wait to revisit soon!

Yelp
This coffee is pure art. Beautiful designs and even better tasting. We got a matcha, mocha, cafe Rico, and flat white and everyone was very impressed. The vibe of the place is so cute and they have records playing in the back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
There was a vinyl record DJ playing some R&B on a Sunday - small shop ran by the owner just doing what he loves! There's a mix of casual dates, business meetings and locals just getting their coffee fix here. Wish I remembered the owners name! Not only is he service-oriented, but he also puts love in every cup - including heart-shaped foam. Very mellow, down to earth vibes. I couldn't tell at first how I'd like it (Venice is a whole different world to me than San Diego), but I'd come back here for a mellow coffee/latte day. They had almond AND oat milk alternatives, good matcha, and the perfect sweetness with the vanilla (in both our drinks). P.S. there was tons of wine on the two walls not pictured - apparently it's a popular wine (/dinner?) spot by night, too!

Yelp
Dogs are not welcome here. My dog is a service animal and yesterday morning I was asked to leave immediately while outside the rain was unbearable. If you are an animal lover avoid this place. The owner is obnoxious and snobby. Not worth it! Parking is also extremely hard to find.

Yelp
Words not needed. Get blessed by my man Nicely's hands. The mocha topped with dark chocolate shavings and salt is a kiss from heaven. Get the best coffee no question enjoy. Energy Steve easily taps in to the highest frequency inside this establishment

Yelp
Such a perfect space to grab the most beautifuly poured latte you've ever had! Great records being played at all times! Nicely is the greatest and i really appreciate his attention to detail in every pour.

cameron s.

Yelp
I asked how many shots in the latte. The barista seemed to take it the wrong way. He told me he couldn't adjust the amount of coffee in each drink. They just came the way they make them. So I ordered a latte and a flat white with no alterations. When I paid I was charged an extra dollar for each drink with a line that said "special". I tipped $2 on top so my two coffees cost over $17!!! There are a couple dozen great coffee shops with warm and friendly service around here. So I plan not to come back.

Dommy W.

Yelp
If you're Kiwi or Australian and can't seem to find a Flat White just like at home... this is the place. Great service. They take a lot of pride in their coffees.
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
The best coffee shop in the city! Go visit Nicely and listen to play records, order something that involves steamed milk. You will be happy
google avatar

Olga A.

Yelp
I'm a huge matcha fan. With a 30+ minute waiting time and $25 spent, I got three drinks: a hot coffee, a cappuccino, and matcha. The milk in my matcha was so overheated that it was nearly impossible to taste the matcha.

Leah B.

Yelp
Best coffee anywhere, from a truly passionate coffee expert and a really nice guy - he recognizes you when you come back a year later! Every drink is made with patience and amazing care. Sit in the sun, listen to the tunes spinning on the turntable (friends come in and share their vinyl collections) and enjoy a fantastic cup.

Katie R.

Yelp
New favorite coffee spot! Such a good vibe, great music, and incredible coffee. Already can't wait to go back
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
Coffee doesn't get better when you're here. Nicely is an artist at making sure you get a delicious cup of coffee. Just tell him what you want and an enjoyable cup will be made. The flavor of the coffee is just great and the freshness is tasted instantly. I need to come back and try other delicious coffee selections.

Jordan B.

Yelp
Such a good vibe in this cafe. Barista chatted us up- so friendly and passionate about coffee. Really good quality espresso!

Megan M.

Yelp
By far my favorite place for coffee. Nicely is incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, and makes some of the best coffee I've ever had. Love supporting fellow Puerto Rican!!!
google avatar

Lane T.

Yelp
As a foodie i would say this place is amazing and as a coffee guy i would say you have to try it. Nicely is the perfect barista and host. Tell him what you want and he will deliver. All the food items if you are lucky enough to try them are life changing. Think, layering of happiness! You will not be disappointed with anything from this place. Tell them the Tanakas sent ya!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hooked Venice is always terrific. Nicely's skills are over the top. Lena is superb. Guy serves delish breakfast dishes from the kitchen. And, they are all SO goddamned nice and genuinely a treat to visit with. Coffee . . . perfect. Food A+. Great people! Always a super experience. GO!!!
google avatar

Isabel P.

Yelp
Next level coffee experience. I had such a lovely time chatting with Nicely and Lena. Plus their drinks are so well balanced, delicious and you can tell how much care and thought is put into each drink. I got the pillow mint which was a mind blowing combo of matcha, chocolate, mint, honey and almond milk. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Ana D.

Yelp
This is my new favorite coffee spot in LA! Great coffee, beach vibes, and a committed barista (NICELY is the best in the city) is how you want to start your day. His attention to craftsmanship, the flick of da wrist when he's sprinkling cinnamon on a cafecito, the grating of chocolate on a mocha then topped off with a touch of sea salt makes for a unique and enjoyable experience. I appreciate when a coffee shop not only serves excellent coffee but also creates a welcoming atmosphere with good music and positive vibes.

Sophia A.

Yelp
best coffee in LA. always worth the wait. phenomenal latte. love that they play records.

Josianne C.

Yelp
The best Coffee in all of LA!!! Strongly recommend the Flat White with very light Vanilla cream and Dark chocolate!. Marvelous! Ask for NICELY, the owner, his coffee will blow your mind!

Trevor P.

Yelp
I just went here once but so amazing. There is only one guy so make sure you have time to wait and hang out to enjoy it there. I had a guy who did everything right not to mention DJ some great tunes. Loved the atmosphere and on BTW, terrific vanilla latte! I wan't hungry but pasteries were pretty much gone by 10:45 on a Sunday. They must be good, too. I'll be back on a day off or another Sunday.

Mary F.

Yelp
Hooked has the best coffee and Nicely makes the best crafted lattes I've had in CA. Caje in Santa Barbara runs a close second.

Farnoush T.

Yelp
$10 per cup of coffee !!! Omg ! Don't go here. Owner is obnoxious and snobby. Not worth it!
