Where to Order Takeout and Delivery on New Year’s Eve in NYC | Eater NY

"Across the street from Chinatown’s well-known Wo Hop is Hop Lee, a neighborhood source American-Chinese dishes and Cantonese-style seafood. The restaurant’s holiday takeout menu — available through January 2 — includes General Tso’s chicken, Singapore noodles, and stir-fried baby bok choy, which can be portioned for two or four ($20 to $40). Cash only." - Eater Staff

Google
chicken in General two. it was delicious. As for the service, it’s like at McDonald’s, I placed an order and received an order. I advise employees to wear gloves. and I advise you to refresh the renovation of the premises.

Google
I moved here in the greenpoint community. My first time ordered bean with broccoli garlic with fried pork rice and free wonton soup for only 8 dollars It is nice! Taste very good. They don't have tables and chairs and can't stay eat there.

Google
Truly the best Chinese food in Greenpoint. Everything I’ve had there is so tasty and so reasonably priced. Their lunch special is amazing and they’re always very nice! My go to spot anytime I want take out!!

Google
Now hear me. I am new to greenpoint. Respectfully, this is a whole in the wall that’s why I didn’t take no pictures. Now I lived in queens for over 10 years, originally coming from 17 years lived in Brooklyn. The food in queens doesn’t compare to the food in BK AT ALLLLLL!!! . I say all of that to say this, on the first bite of this food I said to myself THIS TASTE LIKE BROOKLYN. Completely forgot that I was in Brooklyn lol. The food here is really good. The wings are a MUST try. They are open late all week, have online ordering, deliver, and take card.I will warn, when it rains this place gets flooded with orders and pause phone orders( the demand is scary I’ve seen it with my own eyes) but other than that I highly recommend

Google
WORST customer service, the Delivery guy held my door open for me to grab my phone and prove to him that I tipped him( it’s not the first time. Everyone is very rude. The food is mid.

Google

Google
Called in a delivery. Sesame Chicken + Pork Fried Rice & the food was really good. Well packaged, very good taste & the chicken wasn't over sauced with a good crisp to it. Was able to eat it without using any sauce (which I usually do at Chinese spots). Also very fast delivery 👍🏾👍🏾

Google
Waited at the order counter and the lady proceeded to ignore me, then point to the two customers behind me to blatantly take their orders and pretend i didnt exist. Had to leave without ordering. Awful service, awful woman behind counter Looks like a LOT of the reviews for this place are about their awful and mean servers and their nasty unclean shop. Would NEVER recommend coming here. Not sure if the serving issue was racism but better safe than sorry

Yelp
Hop Lee Kitchen is exactly what you would expect from your local Chinese restaurant. Reliable, quick delivery, and delicious! You can't go wrong with anything you order, my go to order is a shrimp fried rice, chicken wings, spring rolls & it has never disappointed!

Yelp
I'll mention what I've had and tell you my thoughts on each dish. The shrimp with lobster sauce is always good. I think they provide 12 large shrimps consistently if you get the large container. The wonton soup...is average wonton soup. I've had the sesame chicken and at times it was tender enough. Other times it was rather tough so I won't order it again. Their lo mein is a bit on the dry side so that's off my list as well. I happened to order the shrimp lo mein and I think I counted 3 baby shrimp. DO NOT ever get the boneless spare ribs. I've tried it twice. Each time, I was given thin strips of leather like, fatty "meat". Not digestable at all. As mentioned, I gave them 2 chances with that dish and it was horrid each time ending up in the trash. I won't be trying anymore dishes.

Yelp
The place is a small take out spot , love that they deliver over the bridge to LIC . I have ordered from this place numerous times and it's always consistent and prices are reasonable . Food is always delivered quickly

Yelp
Likes - good foods - close to subway, bus and citibike - nice neighborhood Dislike - bean curds a bit bitter - plain fried rice (rice, oil and chicken stock)

Yelp
I used to love ordering from this place but now I'll no longer spend my money at places where the people are flat out racist . They are very rude and condescending for a place that doesn't even have great food . There are plenty of Chinese restaurants to eat at nearby so my suggestion just go there. I ordered food and the driver left it outside on the sidewalk I live in a building how unreal is that . I informed them my bell doesn't work and to call me when they reach downstairs no they left the food outside literally and took my money. Horrible people , horrible place , horrible business.

Yelp
Food is decently good but customer service is not. I avoid having to order for delivery due to the delivery guy - there were not one or two but three instances where the person delivering my food would not even greet me or even be nice. On top of that, I asked for change once and he asked me '($ this much) tip for me right?' .. like what? Idk if it's just me but you shouldn't say how much you're supposed to get from me, i'm pretty sure the customer decides that. If you really are craving chinese, do yourself a favor and just go for pick up.

Floyd S.

Yelp
Best boneless spare ribs I've had in my life!! These are not greasy or anything! They are still perfectly seasoned and full of proper flavor.

Yelp
Been coming here for 3 years now. I love how quick they are and how affordable it is especially living in greenpoint where everything is so expensive. I used to have a bad living situation where I just did not want to use the kitchen. As a result, I used to come here and get meals for the week because I knew it would not break the bank. The chow fun is fun and definitely filling. Some times the vegetable fried rice isn't as flavorful, but that's why you get fried rice with some type of meat. My favorite dish to get here has been the general tso chicken or the sesame chicken. It's funny bc they're like the same thing except one has sesame seeds, but sometimes you just want a little bit of a different thing. There isn't a place to sit, but the place reminds me of growing up in the Bay Area on the west coast. It's small and looks like it's family run. Anyone who says service is bad doesn't understand the secret behind Chinese fast food places and needs to add some spice on their palate.

Yelp
Hoplee is a hidden gem. I've been a customer for as long as I can remember. It's the best Chinese food spot in Greenpoint, dare I even say BK and LIC area. The boneless spare ribs, baby shrimp, sesame chicken, chicken& broccoli, and fries are our favorite. They used to serve tostones (fried green plantains). Hoping they will bring that back on the menu. Regardless, the portions are large and consistent. We are loyal customers. The staff knew my family so well that when we called to place an order for delivery, we were never asked for our address. When I moved to queens plaza, I checked out the local spots but none came even close. After the let downs, I didn't eat Chinese food for months except when I was in Greenpoint. Cravings hit so I paid the extra fees for Uber deliver from my favorite spot. A $40 order for what would've cost me half the price. I didn't mind tho, their food is that damn good! I've recently moved to Hunter's Point and bumped into one of their staff making a drop off in my building. He asked how my family was doing and sent his regards. After all these years, he remembered - seeing him took me back to my childhood days, when I would order wings and fries after-school, he would be in the kitchen throwing down. Thank you HopLee for all the years of good service and delicious food!!

Yelp
Easily our favorite Chinese food spot in the area. The food is always great and super consistent, delivery is fast and they give you large portions - what more could you want? We always get fried rice, lo mein, foo young, sesame chicken, dumplings and hot & sour soup. The sesame chicken is so tasty and the hot & sour soup is perfect. What I love most is that the food isn't drenched in sauce, I hate when you get lo mein and it's dripping in sauce - this tastes so good on its own. We usually cover friend rice and lo mein in curry sauce but with the food from here we never do. Great regular spot, consistent, cheap and yummy!

Yelp
First time customer and will be the last time! Ordered chicken with mixed vegetables, I get only pieces of chicken with mushrooms, that's not MIXED VEGETABLES. I ordered General Tso's Chicken: The chicken comes clumped together like a hard ball with only 2 stalks of broccoli. I ordered a Shrimp eggroll, yet I don't see any shrimp in the shrimp egg rollI and super greasy, I also ordered a vegetable egg roll, another super greasy roll. Ordered vegetable dumplings, they were mainly dough and little vegetable filling inside! This meal was a total disaster, a real turnoff and they don't even give a free beverage for the price I paid A big waste of money. NEVER AGAIN!

Yelp
Food isn't the worst but this review is mostly for their customer service and phone manners. There isn't a time that I have called for delivery and the woman who answers ALWAYS has a rude and unwelcoming response. She told me that because I was so close to the restaurant to just pick up. I was busy at work but decided okay, I'll just send someone. When they get there she tells him that there is no order for me. When he tells me, I call back and she tells me that the next time I send someone to pick up that I better make sure they speak English or to send them with a note. These were her exact words. What? LOL The irony! The nerve! Needless to say, they won't be getting another dollar from me.
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
They're pretty much the only Chinese food restaurant around and they know it which unfortunately shows in the food. If you live or work in the area, im The fried rice is bland and hard the boneless ribs come dry, slightly sweet, but otherwise flavorless. They only give one packet each of soy sauce/ duck sauce. Want more? Pay up buddy. (Trust me you'll want more). The egg rolls are good tho ‍

Yelp
I wonder why their is a 3-star average of rating here. As someone who recently moved to NYC (10 months), I can attest that this has been my go-to restaurant for delivery and take-out. Go-to: chicken wings with rice for $7.50. I prefer white rice. I've got a poor man's palette and it never fails to satiate me. I.e., my portions are typically larger -- I am no rabbit eater -- unless the occasion calls for it. Delivery: Will typically get it delivered. I once had it for 3 meals over the weekend because of an incredibly long week of work. They came through and made me happy. Location: not a place to necessarily eat. If it's raining their is a floor-to-ceiling window that you can sit behind. The kitchen churns our food like a factory, so it's what you'd expect in any tiny spot that dishes that out. Other: They also work their ass off in the kitchen. If you become a regular they sometimes throw in a soda after you and your friends order something big. Price: The cheapest you'll likely find to eat in Greenpoint!

M C.

Yelp
Surprised the average rating is lower. This is great Chinese food! We ordered delivery a few times and were never disappointed.
google avatar

Matthew W.

Yelp
I've been coming here almost every work day for lunch. These guys are above average for a hole-in-the wall Chinese restaurant. Their Singapore Mei Fun is delicious and they are usually more than happy to make it extra spicy when I ask. Aside from that, the rest of their menu is also above average. Occasionally I'll bite into a shrimp shell or something minor but for the price everything they serve is comparitively delicious and well-cooked. This is NOT gourmet Chinese... but for 6 dollars you can get a really delicious full lunch prepared to your liking... and I don't really ever ask for more than that when it comes to lunch-break Chinese food.
google avatar

Elias T.

Yelp
Very rude & disrespectful delivery driver making false assumptions about me canceling an order & refused to give me my food that I paid for
google avatar

Angelika C.

Yelp
So, i ordered 2 lunch specials and an appetizer on 7/31 Tuesday and after ordering on Grubhub, i called the place to ask for extra sauce & forks, napkins. No answer. Called and called and called and no answer. I google and apparently they were closed! Why was i able to order food if they were closed??? OMG Anyways, i call another place to order lunch and that was that. My credit card was already charged but i can dispute it since i didn't get delivery. Of course, this is another 1/2 hour of my life wasted on the phone with credit card company but yeah, i DO want the money back for food i never got, so i will gladly waste 30 minutes of my life. Wednesday 8/1 at lunchtime, i get a call - "Hey, your food is here, what is your room number?" Huh? You order Chinese food and you get it A DAY later? Talk about a fast delivery LOL

Michael E.

Yelp
The shrimp lo mein is nasty and dry. The taste is weird. The lo mein has no life. It's not the same like back in the days. Looks like left overs

Ilana H.

Yelp
I've been ordering from them for 1.5 years and have no complaints! While the boneless ribs are a little too sweet for me, I have liked everything else quite a bit! The combo platters that come with egg roll is a really good deal, and they always deliver really quickly! A classic NYC Chinese takeout restaurant with consistent service and quality. Hard to find, and an essential asset to any neighborhood!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
For $10 I get the shrimp in lobster sauce combo. Comes with a good amount of shrimp in the sauce that is not watery, and so much flavor! I have gotten this dish at places that cost more and have tasted completely bland and was very disappointed. (Comes with rice and egg roll too).
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I must admit this is the first time I've ever ordered from this location. The food was good and the price was even better. I was able to feed 2 1/2 people for less than 25 bucks cannot complain
google avatar

Knot U M.

Yelp
I use to order delivery from here all the time. The one time that i didn't... i called in an order because I had to go fast. I came in the restaurant and saw the lady counting money with the same glove she was preparing the food with. Needless to say I turned around and got the heck out of there yuck.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
I don't understand the bad reviews for this place. My food was great! I ordered vegetable lo mein and fried rice and they were fresh and delicious! They also don't have a delivery fee on seamless so it's a win-win! I will definitely be ordering often.

Kaisha M.

Yelp
They are so disrespectful! I ordered food and asked for ketchup & hot sauce on everything. The woman said she'll put it on the side. I asked why on the side. She said " do you want it or not, no one is forcing you to order". She apologized after I put her in her place for speaking to a customer like that. It didn't end there! I heard someone banging at the door, the next second I heard kicks at the door as if it was the police. It was the person delivering the food!!! This did it for me. They will not get another dime of my money!
google avatar

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
I love that their food is always fresh and delivery is never a disappointment! You can never go wrong with Hop Lee considering it's the only Chinese tale out in the area that is actually enjoyable.
google avatar

Antonio M.

Yelp
Hop Lee has the best general tso around. Trust me, I've tried them all. Their pork fried dumplings are also next level. Often times people write some p terrible reviews on cheap chinese food restaurants, but honestly you have to set your expectations accordingly. And for cheap Chinese food this place is dank af. Also, the delivery guy is just so awesome. He will greet you by name and thank you all while smiling.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
No wonder the health department shut them down more than once! Disgusting food. They fry chicken ahead of time during peak times leave it out and re fry as orders come in. Rice most times tastes old and the dumpling soup most times tast bad! The lady in the front has a personality problem and is cheap with condiments and utensils...oh and dont ask for fortune cookies!

Kimo K.

Yelp
These folks always deliver consistent quality food super timely. I'm so happy to see they've reopened! The egg rolls and the orange chicken are my go to! Thanks Hop Lee Kitchen!
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
Bomb cheap and fast Chinese. Don't go here to eat cause it looks like a trap house but def do delivery when you lazy and starved because this will hit the spot.
google avatar

Max L.

Yelp
The quickest Chinese delivery you will get in Greenpoint, no one is quicker, literally the nicest delivery people you will get in Brooklyn. The food is very standard Chinese food, its like any other Chinese food place (Which isn't bad at all) If you're hungry, don't want to spend too much, and need it in 30 minutes or less.... Hop Lee is the exact place to order from!
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
I've been having trouble finding a Chinese place in Greenpoint and came across this place. The food was good, large portions, fresh veggies and fast delivery. I especially liked that the breading in the chicken was not too thick. Done places overdue it with the breading and three is no chicken in the middle but Hop Lee did a great job. This will be my new Chinese ordering spot.
google avatar

Julian C.

Yelp
Not good. Slow delivery. The guy over the phone didn't ask for a number. Very bland shrimp fried rice that I could have made at home. Don't recommend.

Banning J.

Yelp
Seriously bland food. The bean curd schezuan style which the menu indicates as "spicy" was devoid of spice. I imagine this is what Chinese food would be like in an old folks home.
google avatar

Devon S.

Yelp
This is the best and cheapest Chinese takeout in Greenpoint. Recommend the Hunan chicken, roast pork wonton soup or Hunan shrimp.
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
The best Chinese takeout food in Greenpoint. Food is good and not greasy at all. Their deliveries are extremely fast if they are very busy it might take a bit but no longer than 30 minutes!
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
My fiancé and I have trouble deciding on whether to order from Chinese Musician or Shang Hai Lee (each of us thinks the others favorite is gross), so last night I decided we should try something different and we ordered from Hop Lee. It was good. I order a pint of Kung Pao Chicken, asked for it spicy. It came lightly spicy (next time I'll say very spicy). Most importantly the chicken in it looked good. It was nice looking pieces of white meat. The veggies were nicely cooked, not cooked to death, just cooked. Chris got a pint Sesame Chicken, which was good (came w a lot of chicken & 3 pieces of broccoli) We also ordered a quart of Broccoli w garlic sauce, light on sauce, that was fine. And a quart of egg drop soup, that was fine, better with black pepper added in. I asked for one of our white rice's to be pork fried rice, and that came and was good pork fried rice. The total was $23. It came with 2 cans of coke, that we did not order (thrown in for free?). Delivery time was fine, not super fast, not slow. We have enough leftovers for lunch today. They use styrofoam containers. :( Does anywhere in Greenpoint use the old chinese take-out white boxes? We both agreed that Hop Lee Kitchen was the place we'd order from going forward.
google avatar

Quags M.

Yelp
This place deserves more love. It's an insanely good value by calories per $. The food is not spicy at all. The meat servings are generous, though the veggies portion of meat dishes is usually about 3. As in, 3 pieces of broccoli and lots of meat. This is fine as your Chinese place.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Placed an order for Large Ribs and General Tso right before closing. Watched the master chef handle the last order of the night. Food was excellent, as always. My apologizes to the rest of the team that had to wait for completion of the final order.
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
Everyone is super friendly and the food is actually really good. I ordered there twice this week (don't judge me) and they delivered within 10 minutes of calling. Yes- the food was fresh, hot, etc. There's actually shrimp in the shrimp fried rice, beef and broccoli is good and cheap lunch specials. Also to note: The delivery guy is so nice and has the coolest bike helmut in life therefore making him my hero.
google avatar

1 K.

Yelp
I ordered Roast Pork lo mein (pt $4.50) and an egg roll ($1.25). Pretty busy and crowded on a Thursday night at 5. There's one table with four seats to wait on your food or sit and eat. The guy I ordered from was nice. The order took 15 minutes. Everything was delicious.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Friendly service but mediocre food. It did fit the bill for my needing a quick Chinese food fix on the way home. The Sesame Chicken came with three broccoli pieces to about 20 pieces of chicken, and half a tub of rice. That's great if you hate veggies, but I would have liked a little more balance. The chicken tasted good but the rice seemed a little off. Compared to some of the Chinese food I've had in central CT, this would rate 4 to 5 stars. But considering how many Chinese joints there are on Manhattan Ave., Hop Lee was only so-so. It tasted better than some that I've tried, but I'll stick with Chinese Musician for the best Chinese food I've found in Greenpoint so far.
google avatar

Al W.

Yelp
How is it that the best Chinese food often comes from the cheapest places? The portions are generous and the food is consistently fast and good when we order from this neighborhood place. A few more menu choices would get them a 5th star from me, but I have no complaints about what they do have.
google avatar

Lina S.

Yelp
We ordered this for dinner tonight via Seamless and all I can say is that the food is really bad. We live in LIC and I am still on the search for good Chinese takeout, this place was not the answer. The food came quickly and was super hot but that's the only good thing I can say. Hot and sour soup was edible but didn't have much flavor. The egg roll was inedible, super hard and tasted like old fish, I threw it out. We also ordered the General Tso's chicken and Hunan Chicken, I asked for both to be made extra spicy and of course they didn't do that, and both dishes were not good. There's a hint of fish in each dish, the chicken is rubbery, again no flavor. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from here again and neither should you.
google avatar

Kristine K.

Yelp
Solid Chinese takeout in Greenpoint. It's also an 'A' consistently on the Health Boards (which can't be said for some of the other Chinese Restaurants in the area. They are also SUPPPERRR fast when it comes to delivery. Like, crazy-i just hung up the phone and you are rining my doorbell - fast. They also accept credit cards. I recommend!
google avatar

Aubree H.

Yelp
My partner and I order Hop Lee Kitchen on nearly a weekly basis. Delivery is always on time if not ahead of it. The food is your favorite stay in, veg out, eat fried rice and french fries New York habit. Couldn't recommend more strongly.

Shadzar Z.

Yelp
Steps to enjoy Hop Lee Chinese food: 1. Order your food 2. Wait 20 minutes for delivery 3. Place your food directly in the trash because it's disgusting.
google avatar

Olivia P.

Yelp
My mind is entirely boggled how this place has an overall 4-star rating. Am I in the the Twilight Zone? This is my first and last take-out from here. The fried wontons were horrendous. They were not crispy, shining in grease and tasted like oil. My boyfriend's general Tso's chicken had barely any meat and tasted like giant puffs of fried dough. My Chicken with mixed vegetables were better - but just barely. The meat and vegetables were fine but the sauce lacked flavor. Stay away if you have any taste buds.
google avatar

Zach L.

Yelp
I live down the block and come here usually once or twice a week. Very diverse menu and friendly owners. Sesame chic combo is a great deal! Can't go wrong with the price here. Haven't tried other items yet but plan to soon!!
