The Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Austin

"Burgers and fries are always an easy sell, which is why you’ll always find a lot of parents and kids at Hopdoddy. There are giant stacks of fries, simple burgers, and milkshakes for kids if they’ve behaved, or as a bribe to get them to stop yelling about how Sarah stole one of their pickles. And there are burgers with toppings like caramelized onions, seared poblanos, and brie for adults. There’s also a great beer selection for when your kids insist on kicking each other under the table. To avoid a long wait, head to the location in the Triangle and come on the earlier side for dinner." - adele hazan

My family and I went to Hopdoddy the other day and it was great! As soon as you walk in, it's a cool vibe, and the aesthetic is really nice. TVs to watch, fantastic selection of beer on tap, clean bathrooms, and delicious food. My girlfriend got the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich & a margarita, I got the Goodnight / Good Cause Burger and one of my favorite beers on tap. My son got the chicken tenders with no sauce and we also got a bowl of Parmesan Truffle fries to share. The food was really great; we enjoyed every bite, and the service was good too! This is one of those places you definitely come back to & one of the better burgers in Austin.

Google
Went for lunch. My colleague and I shared the truffle Parmesan fries. They were hot and crunchy. They went so well with chipotle sauce. Deliciousness on a plate. We ordered the Nashville hot chicken burger. Chicken was juicy on the inside, crisp on the outside. The pickles and coleslaw went really well with the burger. The bread was soft and added the perfect bite to the burger

We were passing through Austin. What a great find. The burgers and fries are outstanding. All the ingredients seemed high quality. I would eat here all the time if I lived in Austin. The decor is really nice and fresh. The staff was friendly. Winner all the way around.

Google
It was our first time here and we decided to sit at the bar. Our bartender Israel was amazing and provided the best service. The food was sooo good and the drinks he made were top tier. He went above and beyond would highly recommend this place and ask for the bartender Israel!

Google
Great service! Ridiculous prices for small burgers! Very tasty. But they use one 4 ounce burger patty. For the price they should be double the size: a half pound patty. OR an extra should be $1-2, not $5! If you’re going to sell $15 hamburgers, DO NOT cheap out on the meat. Give me a good portion of beef, that’s what I came for. I could get a way better burger at in n out with 3 times the meat for $5. 2 stars for the taste and the great service. Edit: they are known for their fries, like parmesan truffle. The sweet potato fries were the best I’ve ever had.

Google
Hopdoddy is a delicious local restaurant in the Austin area. Hopdoddy has one of the best burgers around. The restaurant had plenty of seating and was pretty clean. The menu had many different burger options. I enjoyed the sweet potato fries. The staff were very friendly too.

Google
Had two Cadillac burgers, side of fries and iced tea - all very good with excellent service. A bit expensive, over $45.

Google
I was informed that it’s a must go place for burgers when in Austin, so I went and I was impressed. The burgers/sandwiches were really good. I liked the size of shareable fries bowl, they were really good. The Nutella pretzel shake is highly recommended.

Yelp
I redeemed my free shake from the app (10/10 would recommend joining the rewards program - they send things often). I got the salted caramel - DELICIOUS!!! I'm hooked now. Also, the service was super kind and quick. I haven't had the actual food yet at this location, but if it's as good the shake, then this will be my go-to Hopdoddy spot!

Yelp
A really solid burger chain. The El Diablo is my favorite as it has all the right toppings; the jalapeños and caramelized onions just elevate any burger. One thing I noticed is that they use a croissant-like bun. I'm not sure if this has always been the case or if it's new. The buns were tasty, but I still prefer a classic brioche or potato bun. The Parmesan Truffle Fries is my favorite appetizer there. Super addicting and go well with the truffle dip or chipotle ketchup. I also got to try the Hot Honey Sage Brussels. These weren't my favorite as I felt they were too sweet. I could do with less honey on them. As a whole, Hopdoddy's is a great place for a social gathering. There are a lot of large tables and booths to seat a big group, and the drinks are strong and yummy too.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Solid burger, but not the best burger I've had in Austin at this price point, which is why I only gave 4 stars. Note: if you like your burger well-done, you may want to request that. I like the way they cook the burgers as is, but just a note for those who like zero pink in the center. My favorites: The Goodnight Burger and milkshakes.

Yelp
I want to like this place so much. But alas, every time I go it's disappointing. Whether it's the wait time, or just overall taste of the food, it usually not worth it. Attached is a picture of my undercooked chicken sandwich that almost just made me throw up

Yelp
Happy hour here is great!! Super casual and fun place to grab a bite and/or drink, and the staff is nice and energetic! We got the skinny dip and it was strong yet tasty! Ordered a classic burger and shared the truffle fries, which were very flavorful! Highly recommend for happy hour!! I look forward to coming and trying the other drinks and food items off the menu!

Yelp
First time at this location. Really friendly staff. Ordered a Voodoo Ranger, Wagu burger and fries. Everything prepared with excellence. Great burger. Enjoyable environment and really good music.

Yelp
4 is bc the tables were dirty most of the them at the time I was there, other than that I absolutely love the waygu burger, goat cheese and caramelized onions , Nutella shake is wonderful and never not ordering truffle fries , most locations have outdoor seating and are pet friendly
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was fine, but the truffle fries. They were definitely on the overdone side which made for chewy fries. Not good. The place was clean and surprisingly enough, wasn't too crowded at lunch hour. Service here was decent and our cashier even caught up with us to say that she refunded us for charging two extra kids chicken tenders. Nice of her to do that!
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
The vibes always great at this location! I ordered the classic burger bowl and the parmesan truffle fries are always a must! The service is amazing here and it's a great place to chill with friends and family. The truffle sauce is top tier and always make sure to get extra!

Yelp
Had a really good lunch today at Hopdoddy burger bar. We sat at the bar for happy hour, Harry, our bartender was great! He made us some bomb ass drinks. We got the 512 pecan beer, a Paloma, and a strawberry margarita on the rocks. Drinks are very delicious. We ordered the sliders that were on happy hour and some fries. Total of $28 plus the tip. They also give free samples of the beer if you want to go ahead and try it before you order it, that was very neat. Had a great time. There's a parking garage right across hopdoddy, it's free, so that was very convenient and very nice.

Yelp
Last night I ordered Hopdoddy Burger Bar from DoorDash. Not only were my entire order of fries missing but there was a meat patty on my VEGGIE BURGER. This is from the North Lamar location. I called to notify the store and she apologized. I was only partially refunded from DoorDash! I couldn't eat anything from my order considering I didn't even receive my fries. I'm posting this so I can make others aware to double check your "veggie burger" from this store. Also- my order was stapled to a receipt on the bag. I believe this was definitely my order, just a huge careless bad mistake to be making. Left me nothing to eat and less money in my account

Yelp
Hopdoddy has always been a solid burger place to me. I consider it a reliable burger place. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's absolutely a great option. I was lucky enough to get a spot at the bar when they ran the 50% promo so I enjoyed that. At first when I got there, the bar was full, but the employee working at the time told my friend and I that we can grab another set of chairs and join. She immediately made the experience 100x better. She was the reason we got to enjoy the meal even more. The fries and swirled Marg were great, loved that immensely. The sliders were good enough and good for a happy hour menu item. I don't know if I would go just for those though. Either way, I'm a fan of what hopdoddy does and of course I will continue to come back!

Yelp
Hopdoddy continues to impress. Incredible Happy Hour Sunday-Thursday 3-6pm entire menu is half-off. That's insane. My burger of choice is the Diablo, habanero peppers galore, and they will cook it medium rare or "more pink" (computer button) if you ask them. Great staff, say Hi to Jon!

Yelp
Weird experience with a to go order today! Pulled into one of the to go spots, it says to text your name and space number to a specified number. So I do, and I wait. After I realize that it's been 10 minutes, I call that number and get a very confused gentleman who's trying to figure out why he's been getting these weird texts for months. After explaining the situation to the phone number owner, I call the store number and get to a call center. Did I accidentally call tech support? The IVR is a bit hard to navigate, but I finally get a real person. I try to explain my situation, and he interrupts to say that he's transferring me to a teammate that can help. The call then goes to voicemail. At this point, I'm like, okay I guess I will brave going inside. (I'm mid-move and wasn't really dressed to be perceived by the public, but clearly I'm not receiving my food unless I do.) I go in to explain the situation, and they basically say, "sorry that signage shouldn't be out, but we haven't had curbside in a WHILE so you should have known." I mentioned that I was late picking the food up because I was trying to figure out what was going on because of the sign, so my food would be soggy. No one acknowledges my concern. I get my food home and lo and behold, my burger manages to be both soggy and dry from sitting out under the warmer for so long. I open the parmesan brussels and a swarm of fruit flies come out of it. I throw both away. Probably not going back.

Yelp
What can I say that I haven't already said about this fantastic place other than: 1.) Tried the Double Bacon Jam for first time, and it is out of this world, and my Hopdoddy favorite until I try the next one, that I haven't tried. 2.) Paloma Margarita is nice and refreshing for the outdoor patio. 3.) Big Larry is my hands down favorite, especially with my special additional tequila shot. The bar here is awesome and the bartender, Harry, was great. He offered great advice poured fantastic drinks, and even gave me a sample of the adult shakes. It's not just the food that is fantastic, but the service as well, which is equally important in my book. Need one of these in Albany, NY

Briana S.

Yelp
I got the thunderbird and queso fries. $20 spent and despite all the fancy ingredients listed on the menu these two items basically tasted like nothing. I got the thunderbird Sans bacon and pulled the avocado off thinking that might be dampening the flavor. I even poured the queso on it to try and make it better but alas nothing helped. I even disliked the fries because many of them were crunchy. It's like they didn't bother actually seasoning the food with anything beyond salt. Disappointed but not surprised is how I'd describe my experience.

Yelp
This was another lunchtime experience here where this time ordered the Crispy Tenders with a shareable Hand-Cut Fries. It was a nice day so I sat outside under an umbrella covering. They do not serve sweet tea but ordered a regular tea and added sugar to it, and luckily has those brown Hawaiian sugar packets. There was as I remember 4 or five chicken strips and two types of sauces where one was ranch but cold not identify the other. Both were good and even dipped my fries into them. The chicken tasted really good with a tasty breading. I enjoyed it all.

Yelp
I've been to Hopdoddy a few times and have always gotten what I expected: creative, great tasting burgers (a bit on the pricier side for a burger, but mostly worth the splurge), tasty fries, and hearty milkshakes. There's something for everyone on the menu, and the fries are fresh and always a great add-on with your burger choice. My favorite fries are the hot honey sage (sweet potato fries) and the parmesan fries! For the burgers, the Truffle Mac is really good (I can see why it's a fan favorite), and the Magic Shroom is my usual go-to. The milkshakes are super heavy and I can never finish one. I haven't tried their libations but they look tasty (margaritas and other house cocktails), and they have M-F happy hour specials from 3-6pm: $5 house margs, house cocktails, and beers, and then $5 house fries or pretzel bites with cheese. Overall, Hopdoddy is a great burger place for some solid burgers and I love that they feature new creative burgers each month!
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
Hopdoddy has a great social atmosphere and tasty burgers and fries. My friend and I had the classic burger and parmesan truffle fries. The fries come in a massive bowl and can be shared amongst a few people. They were incredibly delicious, and the burgers were great as well. Service was okay.
google avatar

Yelp
First time at this location and second trying Hopdoddy and they did not disappoint. Initially the line wasn't moving for a solid 10 mins but when it did start to move it moved swiftly so the wait wasn't outrageous, also it was a holiday. Hopdoddy literally has some of the best burgers I've ever had..def top 3 and I've had a lotta burgers these past 35 years. Ordered the bacon jam double with the bacon jam on the side and no grilled onions and a side of chipperbec fries. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection..they don't ask you how you want your burger cooked but whatever temp they default to is working, it's cooked well enough but still juicy and flavorful. The fries are crispy but not hard and seasoned just right.
google avatar

Ana K S.

Yelp
These are the best burgers I have ever had. I think the trick with this location is to find a time when it's not super busy, during my last visit everything was super quick and we had great service but I have been there a few other times and it can take a while to get your food. I highly recommend get the magic shroom or the ahi tuna burger. Also 10/10 would recommend their hot honey sweet potato fries although beware they can be VERY spicy!

Jacy

Yelp
Had a MASSIVE. MASSIVE CHUNK of hair in my milkshake. It genuinely almost looks intentional. Made me feel so sick I genuinely could not finish my order.
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
Great burgers and fries. Why would I possibly leave a tip when you do not offer table service?
google avatar

Jon W.

Yelp
One of the best burgers ever. They have the traditional burger along with some unique combinations. I really like how they mange the wait. They assign you a table when you are in line. You can't order until you have a table number. HopDoddy can get busy so you don't have to worry about getting your food with no place to sit.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
I'm a hop doddy loyalist. The west Plano location is my go-to and is always consistent. This Austin location was just as consistent. Great truffle fries and great classic burger. My sister got the boozy Nutella pretzel milkshake and loved it. I would pass- it left me wanting for either a chocolate milkshake OR a cocktail, but not them together. I'm told the chicken burger and the poblano burger were also satisfactory. No plate was left with food on it!
google avatar

Omar W.

Yelp
The service at Hopdoddy's was awesome - the manager even came by to check on our experience and was really attentive. When I had a little issue with my order, he dealt with it in a very professional way. There's nothing better than good food made better by great people. Thank you Steven and staff
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
Dined in on a late Sunday afternoon. We both ordered the Classic with an order of fries. The burger was quite delicious considering the reason I haven't actually had a craving for Hopdoddy's in years was because of their burger meat being overly salty; however, this burger was tasty and the service was good.
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
It's not the best in Austin, but still recommendable. As you walk in, you will get a table, but you need to go to the counter to place an order. Order and pay at the counter, but they bring your drinks and food to your table. I've heard so many compliments about this place and it's near where I live, so I gave a try with my friends and it was good enough. Nothing super impressive, but the staff was all attentive and polite, their service was pretty fast even though it was a busy Friday night, and four burgers we ordered were pretty good. I can't say I would go back for burgers, but probably for drinks as they have a fun & social atmosphere.
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
Hopdoddys hava such a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Husband often has a craving for this place and we always get a seat indoors. It's a great restaurant for eating good hearty bar food and conversing. It's pretty clean we've a sticky table maybe once. I've been to this spot several times and it's a bit hit or miss. I am vegetarian so I'll often just get their regular cheeseburger with a Beyond Meat patty. Sometimes the patty is over salted. Husband only eats the regular meat burgers and he said he's had the same issues. The burgers aren't too big, but are still filling. The fries are meant to be shared you need at least two people. We still never finish them. I think the only time we ate all of the fries was when we came with my sister and my dad there to help.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Hopdoddy does it right. Never had a burger or anything here that wasn't detectable. Double negative, yeah. Their burgers are out of this world. You can taste the difference. Not only is it never frozen meat, it's also farm to market beef. Whatever their recipe is--it's working! And Harry, my bartender, did a great job. He was friendly, attentive, and made for a pleasant experience. 5/5 stars. This place is a gem.
google avatar

Angeline D.

Yelp
Really good food! Even just the basic burger. I ordered some regular fries on the side, and they were good but a little salty. The service was quick, and the restaurant itself was nice inside. A nice, welcoming atmosphere!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
As always excellent quality! The service was prompt, the burgers were delicious (T-Bird and the Double Bacon Jam) along with the Kale Caesar Salad and a generous side of Truffle Fries with the signature truffle dip!
google avatar

Kate Z.

Yelp
Hopdoddy is well known for being a gourmet burger place, but really it's just an okay burger place with high prices. All 3 burgers were not that big. It was filling, but I'd expect more from the Big Chuck burger especially. The Llano Pablano lacked in flavor. The Bacon Jam Double Cheese burger needed more jam. The fries were decent and I like the whole wheat bun with all the seeds and stuff on top. During quarantine I tried their burger kit. It was pretty fun, but we ended up with just some regular burgers. The reason for 3 stars is that Hopdoddy is overpriced for what they offer, but the food is generally okay. Would I come again? Not unless it's someone else's treat.

Michael B.

Yelp
If you like your fries burned and hard, if you like enough salt to burn your tongue and paralyze your throat on everything and in everything, then Hopdoddy in the Triangle is the place for you. This was true a year ago as it is today (we thought we'd give it another try). Hopdoddy on Burnet is better by far. A matter of management?
google avatar

Bre M.

Yelp
They've definitely improved since my last review. The chocolate Nutella pretzel shake is back (win) and they've added to burgers and flavors. I also really enjoy the burger bowls!
google avatar

Sunny P.

Yelp
I love that Hopdoddy always has a delicious, consistent burger. I came here the other night and forgot to grab a number off the table. What can I say? My hunger gravitated very strongly towards the menu without any care in the world! The green chile queso fries were calling to me. The employee taking my order was very kind, could see my ravaging burger eyes, and got a number for me without a fuss. I digress. I ordered the Good Night/Good Cause, and was content with this. It was gone in about 8 seconds as were the fries (I did my best to share). Love ya, Hopdoddy!
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
first time coming to hopdoddys and was met with a pleasant experience. I split a double bacon burger and the roosevelt burger with a friend and we also got some parmesan truffle fries to go along with it. I was personally a big fan of the double bacon burger, which consisted of tomato jam, bacon, and two paddies that were cooked perfectly with a nice crispy exterior. my friend described the taste as "an orgy of umami flavorful delight" which was an interesting description that i could align with. it was also nice to see that the burger wasn't too oily, but i felt like some vegetables would have been a nice touch. The roosevelt burger was a monthly special that was composed of arugula, a bison paddy, goat cheese and cherry jam. this burger was a little too sweet for my taste, but if you enjoy that i'm sure it would definitely hit the spot. the bison paddy had a gamier taste, which was a leaner cut of meat than that of a traditional paddy, but still very delicious. didn't manage to eat too much of the truffle fries cuz i'm apparently carbphobic, but they were good too 4 stars, good time

Yelp
Personally Hopdoddy's has been a long favorite of mine since the early days when there was only the South Congress location and you had to wait in that long line before you received the reward of a gourmet burger. And then they opened the Anderson location and that line was shorter. But...the Triangle location...this is the winner in my book. I've been here 10+ times and I've rarely had to wait. I will say the service is not as good as some of the other locations. -No one to offer you free samples in line. -No outdoor space heaters as you wait (though they've now added tables that have a center fire that you can light outside). -Sometimes you have to go retrieve your own order cause they forgot a burger or say they'll come back with your extra sauce and never did. -And they always seem to be out of some condiment or the other here. But, give me the one star off service and lack of mayo for no line. That's just me. Some tips: Seating: Because it's not as packed, you can usually request which table you want at the register. Parking: Parking is also the best at this location (there's a parking garage right across from it). Salads: Add a patty to the caesar and add parmesan. Or get the parmesan truffle fries, pour it into your plate and scrape the remaining into your salad. This is wayyy better than the lettuce wrap version of any of the burgers. Meats: Skip the chicken...the thunderbird is okay...but really, skip the chicken.

Yelp
Truth is that I've never been a huge Hopdoddy fan. The crowds and the hipster vibe have often turned me off. But this location is different. Stopped in for a Tuesday night meal with family and I ended up changing my plan for a burger and replacing my dinner plans with their chicken tenders. I'm glad I did. Their chicken tenders are elevated. In other words, they don't taste like fast food. Combine them with their caffeinated BBQ sauce and you've got probably the best chicken tenders around. And needless to say, their cooked to order fries are excellent too. My dining companion raved about her burger as well. I was also impressed with the genuinely warm staff we encountered. Both times that our food was brought out, we were asked if we needed anything else and reminded of what condiments were available. Unlike a lot of trendy places, the staff at this location appreciates your business and does their best to make you feel welcome. I need to go back and try a burger, but the chicken strips may be hard to pass up.

Yelp
We went last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The fries with green chile queso were piping hot, and our burgers were cooked perfectly. The large margaritas were strong and refreshing.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Pandemic review: SAFE! CLEAN! Employees wore masks and gloves. We used the online order and curbside pick-up. The curbside parking here is awesome because the reserved spots are right out front. We highly recommend this service so that you do not have to enter. There is covered outdoor seating available if you prefer dining al fresco or to bring your pup. I The order was accurate and the employee was friendly. Everything comes sealed or in a sealed bag. They use environmentally friendly packaging and containers.

Yelp
Harry is the best bartender/employee I've experienced in Austin in years. He has been phenomenal every time I have experienced this location. So kind and accommodating. This locations has run out of pretzels during happy hour many a time but Harry has been a doll. He's my fav.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
They dress their burgers up a ton, but at the end of the day the meat patty itself is a little tough and dry. Usually the decadent toppings and truffle fries kind of distract you from that, but after visiting time and time again, you'll start to notice it. Aside from that, I have appreciated the convenience of their curbside service during COVID times and it's still a decent spot to visit with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
First week in Austin and a friend of mine whisked me to this place raving about their burgers. Being a sucker for burgers, I instantly fell in love with the place. The burgersss, the friesssss, the drinksssss - all on point Tried their El Diablo and thunderbird, both were amazing! Their fries, especially the sweet potato fries, are delicious af. All in all it was a great burger experience
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Excellent burgers! We had the classic - cooked just the way I like it (a little pink in the middle). The fries are really good, thinner "shoestring" style. And we enjoyed the birthday cake shake too (not quite as good as Portillo's cake shake). Also hands down the very best gluten free bun I've ever had - amazing! It even tasted buttery, (not something you should ever expect from any GF baked goods : )
google avatar

Jenna Z.

Yelp
Mmmmm! Located inside the Triangle Plaza. This was my go to in college whenever I had a parmesan truffle fry craving because the fries here are just unbeatable. Have been here many times and never had a bad experience. The staff is nice; the first time I came here a couple of years ago, my card wasn't working and I panicked but the staff offered me the burger on the house, seriously so kind of them. When I went yesterday, the service was a little bit slow but understandable because it was prime dinner time. There's lots of seating indoors and outdoors as well. Would recommend coming for great fries and a variety of burgers

Crystal R.

Yelp
This was my first time at Hopdoddy Burger Bar. The food was fantastic, the environment was very chill, and Israel and Mary gave the best customer experience that I've seen from any place in a while. It was so genuine that I had to commend them. I will definitely be coming back with my family to share this experience with them.

Yelp
Hopdoddy has seen better days. No longer do they offer cane sugar sodas - at least it's PepsiCo drinks. Their cocktail list has dwindled to a few margarita based drinks and an even limited selection of beers on tap. There are more chicken and plant based products which is great. I hope the merger with grub burgers will increase the bar selections though because grub burgers just has a better cocktail menu. I got the Nashville hot chicken and little did I know that mild meant no sauce - so I would recommend spicy next time. The chicken was juicy to my surprise. Hopdoddy used to be a place to get great salads and now they are a tier two citizen. We had to ask for our salad order after we had finished our burgers and fries. I admit the salad was basic like what you get in a packet at H‑E‑B. The fries don't taste that fresh any more - possibly frozen? I feel so bad for the staff here as they are understaffed. The only server had to tend bar, make shakes, and serve tables inside and outside. Also when they were local they used to highlight their local producers and right now that chalkboard is just wiped clean. Maybe it's all from SYSCO. Not sure how long this place will last at this rate in a market as dynamic as Austin.

I used to frequent this location of Hopdoddy, and unfortunately I won't return again. Since ~ February 2020 I have had all terrible meals. I am not sure what prompted this change (was it a change in staff? or the supplier of their food?) because it USED to be so good. On my most recent experience, I ordered a caesar salad and the truffle fries and with tip it was $27. Unfortunately, I had to throw it all away because none of it was edible. The fries were so hard that I could not physically break them unless a lot of force was applied with my hands. The salad was almost entirely all crumbles of croutons, dressed in too much dressing, & very little greens. I received an email from HD asking for my feedback, so I was honest, and they gave me a gift card for a future use which was nice but I would have preferred a refund. I would not recommend... maybe try another location if you're craving HD? In terms of actions HD has taken due to COVID, they do offer curbside pickup which is nice.
