Kurobuta Tonkatsu Horiichi

"The family moved to Tokyo from Kagoshima Prefecture to spread the word about the rich, deep flavour of Berkshire pork. Making the rounds of producers in Kagoshima, the couple select their pork with a laser focus on quality. Love of hometown suffuses every item: pickles are marinated in black vinegar from the couple’s native Kirishima, the chef’s mother hand-makes the miso, used in the tonjiru (pork soup), and the sauce captures the flavour of the chef’s parents’ diner back home." - Michelin Inspector

I’ve been in japan for the last couple months and this is hands down the best tonkatsu i’ve had to date. also first time trying it with mustard and my goodness did it change how I wanted to eat tonkatsu. Place was a little hard to find but treasures should be hard to find right? Wonderful staff, wonderful food… I’m coming back before I leave!!! They also had an English menu which was nice and if you’re trying it the first time just do yourself a favor and get option F! It was also cute how they had this tiny katsu where you paid, it’s the little things. :)

I can see why this restaurant earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand—it may be the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had. Reservations were easy to make and pre-paying ahead of time made the dining experience even smoother. My party was warmly greeted and seated immediately upon arrival. We had pre-ordered the Premium Black Pork Loin & Tenderloin Cutlet Set Meal, as well as the Premium Black Pork Loin Cutlet (130g) & Fried Prawn Set Meal (1 prawn). From our table, we could watch the chef carefully prepare and cook each dish. Everything was fried to perfection—light and crisp, not even a bit oily, with the meat staying juicy and tender inside. The balance between the delicate, crunchy crust and the flavorful pork was wonderful. One set meal was also quite a large portion for an individual, making it very satisfying. The staff were extremely kind and made every effort to communicate with us despite the language barrier, which added to the warm and welcoming experience. Truly a tonkatsu meal worth seeking out.

The best tonkatsu I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot. Meat quality is unmatched. Tender, juicy, and the fat literally melts in your mouth. Absolutely divine experience. I would recommend making a reservation. They do have time cards you can pick up which directs you to come back at a certain time, but it’s very limited. Seating is very limited.

Visiting Horiichi was a highlight of my trip. I pre-booked my spot about a month out from my trip after seeing some reviews online. The restaurant is small (sits around 12 people) so a reservation is a must. I had the menu that offered 2 types of pork - both of which were delicious. However, the highlight was the soup! I think they make their miso soup using pork bones too which gave this really deep flavour that was so delicious. If you're looking for a slightly higher-end experience and the opportunity to say you've eaten a Bib Gourmand recognised Tonkatsu, then this is for you.

OCT 2024 Made a reservation for lunch and paid in advance for the pork loin and tenderloin katsu set meal which included rice, tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup), shredded cabbage and a small side of pickled vegetables. Arrived for the 11:10am session and they still have some seating for 14:10am but highly recommend booking in advance. The tonkatsu was prepared pretty fast; it was served within ten minutes after being seated. Both cuts of pork were tender and the panko was perfectly coated and flaky. The pork loin was on the leaner side with a bit of fat cap on the end pieces. They have two tonkatsu sauce, one with less sweetness. Tonjiru soup was hearty and goes well with the tonkatsu. Overall a tasty and satisfying meal, service was good.

It was the best shrimp katsu I’ve ever had. The taste was incredible, with the shrimp’s size and texture being just perfect. Both the pork loin and tenderloin katsu were delicious, and the rice was great too, thanks to its quality. But the shrimp was truly outstanding and unforgettable.

This place is definitely the best tonkatsu I ever had. Meat is super soft. It is just a pleasure to eat. If you want to have a calm dinner, with simple and exquisite ingredients prepared with probably all of the heart …. You got the place. Wort every yenny:)

Advance reservation is highly recommended as this is Michelin restaurant and there are only 12 seats in the store. There are 6 lunch sets available and I chose the kurobuta loin and 1 pc of fillet set. The set comes with tonkatsu, rice, pickles, cabbage, and soup (rice and cabbage can be refilled once). It is recommended having with either sauce or salt. The interesting thing is that there are 3 kinds of sauce on the counter which are miso sauce, sweet sauce, and less sweet sauce while other store normally serves salty-based sauce. After trying all, I prefer the less sweet one the most as I still find it sweet but not too much. The tonkatsu is well fried and rice is delicious. I personally prefer fillet as loin is a bit too oily for me. What impress me the most is soup and pickle! Pickle is sour yet sweet which goes well with fat part of tonkatsu. Soup itself is sweet and refreshing which I have never experienced in Japan before. This is totally different from other tonkatsu store in Tokyo! This restaurant is operated by a man and a lady and they are very nice and polite. Even the store is located at the basement floor, it is still easy to find.
