How to Plan a Ski Trip to Big Sky Resort in Montana

"The main restaurant at the ranch, set in a cozy fireside cabin and focused on locally grown and sourced ingredients; shareable plates and hearty mains include elk meatballs, bison short ribs, and substantial steaks from nearby purveyors. It serves three meals daily for guests on the all-inclusive package but is also a popular reservation for outside diners, with bookings opening a month in advance." - Nina Ruggiero Nina Ruggiero Travel + Leisure Senior Editorial Director Nina Ruggiero oversees T+L's award-winning travel content across digital platforms. One of the best dining experiences I’ve had in my life! We went with a group of 8, plus an infant, and every single person’s drinks and meals were delicious. Celebrated a birthday and got the biggest birthday dessert. Would highly recommend as a must go for anyone in the area of Big Sky.

My husband and I are on our honeymoon and stopped here for lunch because we had read wonderful reviews online, but were unable to get a dinner reservation. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice. However, I was terribly disappointed in the service. I read all wonderful reviews online about how outstanding the service was, but I cannot say the same about our experience. Our server NEVER once came back to our table after taking our order. Drinks were left empty. Never checked to make sure the food that came out was correct. We watched multiple other servers being VERY attentive to their tables. Then we waited 30 minutes for the bill, and a different person kept walking by and couldn’t figure out where our card was. For the price, I am baffled at the poor service. Based on other reviews, it seems this is an uncommon occurrence, so it feels a bit like we were purposely neglected? This may not be the case, but either way, we won’t be back.

Google
One of the top restaurants in the area. Delicious food, great atmosphere and one of a kind service. I’ve been a few times with big groups in both cases and the huckleberry cocktail they serve is delicious.

I detoured here for dinner one night while road-tripping from Whitefish to Yellowstone. For starters, they get an A+ for vibe and ambiance, inside and out. It's a full-blown ranch with a gravel road leading up a hill, and horses outside, yet it still feels luxurious and cozy in every way inside. They have a solid menu; it's not super extensive but has a good variety for different moods. The complimentary toasted sourdough and butter were very tasty. When I mention bread service in a review, it's good! The elk meatball had decent flavors, but the ricotta helped elevate it a lot. It was an enjoyable starter and came out in like 2 minutes. For the entree, the cook on the salmon was literal perfection!.. super crispy skin and my knife went through it like butter. The sauce was amazing and super unique; I could eat it with anything. Overall, service was good, and it was well worth the 30-minute detour!

If you are visiting Big Sky, Horn + Cantle is an absolute MUST. The entire experience is nothing short of perfection…the property, the atmosphere, the staff - Jake was our server and he was the best! The carefully curated drinks and wine selection were amazing. The dinner and presentation were mouthwatering.

Wonderful restaurant on Lone Mountain Ranch! Beautiful scenery and beautiful restaurant! Awesome food and outstanding customer service! Our 2nd visit from South Carolina! Cannot wait to return!

Google
One of the culinary highlights of our trip. If in Big Sky, have to try Horn and Cantle. The staff is great, but the food is even better. I had the bison. Perhaps the best Bison I have ever eaten. Could not have been fresher. After our meal, we grabbed a glass of wine and watched the kids play in the meadow as the sun was setting. Truly, truly an ever lasting memory. Cannot wait to go back.

Google
Amazing experience! Food, service and atmosphere. We lucked out and came on a night with live music, had a couple cocktails and were able to grab a table in the saloon. Staff had great recommendations, were kind and friendly (something we didn’t see elsewhere in Big Sky) and even explained local bourbons and gave tastes of the options. Oh did I mention the burgers are amazing!

Yelp
We were driving to Yellowstone and stopped at Big Sky, MT to grab a bite. We were directed by the locals here. Boy was as that sound advice. We stepped into the saloon and met with Kylie. She was wonderful to talk to and had recently moved to the area. We had a few drinks for my birthday (the Bramble and the Old Fashioned were terrific.) We also split the chicken club sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries. EXCELLENT FOOD! And enough for both of us on one entree. The grounds here are amazing and so the decor inside also make this a MUST STOP in Big Sky. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY!

Yelp
We had lunch here and this place is classy and I thought the food was delicious!! We shared the Caesar salad, which had real anchovies in it; I had the Burger with sweet potato fries - the burger tasted of fresh authentic beef and my mouth was watering, and the fries were perfectly seasoned and salted; my wife had grouper tacos and swapped out the flour tortillas for corn - she thought they were just okay. Our older two boys had grilled salmon with fries and asparagus, and they both ate all of it, which is not the norm. The younger one had kids chicken fingers, which was a very healthy amount that he couldn't eat all of, so we'll get to enjoy it for tonight's dinner. The service was just okay, but the ambiance was quite enjoyable and the front covered patio was a perfect shaded spot.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! We were mesmerized by the cool Montana mountain decor and art. We were seated next to the fire place, very cozy & romantic. We were blown away bu the food. Our most favorite were the appetizers- Elk meatballs were the best close toe with the mishrooms, trout and bison tartar - all outstanding. The entrees - bison and elk were also outstanding. Everything perfectly cooked. The service was top notch as if you were at a Michelin restaurant in New York professional server. He was a Som 1 foodie with Modern Montana cowboy style. The Horn & Cantle made our vacation extra special.

Yelp
Went here for our Mom's 60th birthday dinner and it was exactly what we hoped for. A bougie, elevated meat and potatoes supper. Setting and service were excellent. Everything was cooked to perfection and they even brought us free desserts to share for our family in honor of the bday girl. If you want a special occasion spot in Big Sky country this it!

Yelp
This place!!!!! Everything about Horn and Cantle is above and beyond. We sat in the bar area, our server was FANTASTIC! He had great drink, as well as appetizer suggestions. The ambiance is a cozy and warm as you can get. We watched Elk in the field as we enjoyed our conversations and listened to the live musician. The bar food is outstanding! The cocktails to perfection! Top notch service, And the ambience is perfect!

Yelp
I ate at Horn & Cantle for dinner and it did not disappoint! I had been looking for a reservation to pop up all day, and ended up calling the restaurant to see if there were any last minute cancellations. The hostess let me know that my boyfriend and I could put our name in and hang out at the bar until a table opened up. We ended up getting lucky and only waited 10-15 minutes for a table in the restaurant. The bar area had live music, so it was a nice way to start the night before we were seated! We ordered the mushrooms, chicken, and special (Branzino and Scallops). All of the dishes were incredible. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Big Sky!

Allie S.

Yelp
This place deserves 1,000,000 stars. Wow, what an experience. Before we could even finish appetizers my dad was booking his stay on site so he could eat here all day. Everything we ordered was absolutely insane and top quality. As dishes come out for other customers, you will quickly see there is not one bad thing on the menu here. Appetizers: Elk meatball - it's 1 meatball that can be shared, well you might not want to actually share it with others LOL, with a dollop of a whipped cheese and a little bit of sauce to dunk the homemade toasted focaccia bread Mushroom goat cheese board - local grown mushrooms sautéed in butter with a whipped goat cheese...we were scraping the board clean. Miso Caesar salad - quality lettuce and the miso dressing isn't over powering but a really nice twist that still comes off classic. Dinner UGHHHHH Tomahawk ribeye- I love steak and this was by far the best steak I have EVER had. We switched out the gratin for regular mashed and it tasted similar to a mashed baked potato. Really great. Rigatoni - perfection. Sauce was done really well and the pasta is homemade. Dessert The cowboy cookie - what I want to say isn't appropriate for Yelp. Just order it, trust me. Deconstructed huckleberry cheesecake - WOW normally I don't like dishes presented like this but this blew my mind. Especially with that small scoop of huckleberry sorbet. Our server, Pierce....he was THE MAN. So kind, knowledgeable and had amazing suggestions and stories about the local area . He made the experience so wonderful. He went beyond our expectations as a server, and we are a pain in the ass table to deal with at times LOL After dessert we told them they had to drag us out, or roll us out Lol we took a tour around the property and the beautiful red head (totally forgot her name -_-) she was so kind and showed us all the amazing this the property had to offer. This place is extremely special and highly recommended by anyone we spoke to. If Montana had the same squatting laws as CA, we never would've left LOL can't wait to go back !!!

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Can be noisy when crowded and service while professional and friendly seemed stretched a little too thin to provide quality. Food and drinks were outstanding as was live music during our visit.

Yelp
Had an incredible time here with my friends and family. Amazing food and entertainment in the bar area was on point. Recommend reservations for a table

Yelp
A Big Sky icon- the kind of place you need to try upon a trip here to make sure you get the whole experience. Get a rest early, they book up well in advance.

Yelp
Wonderful ambience, amazing location, fantastic service from Robert. The food was delicious just overpriced In my opinion. Our tomahawk steak was $199. The bland bowl of rice was $17 and $15 for a small half bowl of carrots and potatoes? The mushroom dish appetizer was delicious , don't bother with the bison meatball

Kelly O.

Yelp
Definitely the best option in the area!!! Ate here for lunch and dinner. Turkey sandwich was amazing!!!

Michael R.

Yelp
Great ambiance and service. We were there for dinner recently and sat at the bar because we didn't have any reservations. The food was good and hearty with generous portions. I ordered a shrimp and pasta special that was WAY over spiced and too hot to eat (I had to send it back...which the staff did graciously). The shrimp were massive and plenty...and excellently prepared. My friend had the rib eye and it was good. Go for the ambiance and service...and enjoy the food.

Yelp
Such a great experience! First of all we were here during "slow season" which was great for us because there was barely anyone there. We had a great table in the corner that had tons of pillows and cushions and had a wonderful view of the ranch. Our server Mason was ON-POINT! He was very friendly and professional, gave us tons of suggestions on what to eat and advice on where to explore for the rest of our trip. We even got a surprise ski shot (mainly because we were there for a bachelorette) (Thanks again!!). All the cocktails were delicious, especially the Lone Mountain. If you enjoy old fashions, the Lone Mountain is similar but way better! We got the elk meatball (killer!) and the baked Brie (seasonal). We all shared the different cuts of meats from prime rib, steak frites (skirt steak), and the filet. I definitely recommend the elk meatball to start and the filet mignon was the most tender and flavorful of the 3. The skirt steak was my least favorite, however it was order medium... so a bit well done for me (ha). Finally, for dessert we had a fun banana split that had 8 different toppings on the round tray, which was fun to pick and choose want you wanted to enjoy with the Sunday. Overall, the staff was great which really made the experience a special one. We will definitely be back next time we are back in beautiful Big Sky!

Daniel P.

Yelp
While we did not have a good experience at the restaurant at our dinner, I will say that we had a good follow up conversation with Michael Jacquard, their Director of Food & Beverage. Michael apologized for our experience and wanted to make it right. We appreciated his follow up, as that is what a good manager and restaurant should do. Based on his follow up and making the situation right, we would recommend that everyone should give it another chance. We realize that not everyone can be on point every night. Good restaurants learn from their mistakes and, based on other reviews, it looks like we just had a one off experience. If we are ever in the Big Sky area again, we would be happy to give the restaurant another try. I would also highly recommend the bar and a visit to the grounds. First class atmosphere.

Yelp
Food: Absolutely wonderful. Service was a disappointment since this is known as a high-end place to go and enjoy. Staff could have been better this time around. Reservations are horrible trying to plan ahead and they make you feel less than planning ahead. I was told that hotel guest receive priority so trying to plan ahead is basically shot down by non-hotel guest. Ambiance is clean and wonderful. Previously, we ate in the bar (first come first served) and we will do this next time BECAUSE the fancy dining room is not worth the struggle. In due time, someone will top this place only to find other great places to go.

Yelp
Great romantic ambience. Dim lighting with country music playing. Western Ranch type of decor. Good food and drinks.
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
I'm going to start and say wow what a beautiful place. Employees are friendly. Service was ok. Prices are high ($150.00 per person and higher for a steak) and that would be ok for a tender melt in your mouth steak with delicious sides. But Unfortunately what we received was a not so tender steak with undercooked herbed potato pieces. I found If you ate the potatoes under the steak they were just about cooked right. Mac and cheese was served in a hot cast iron pan. Flavor was good but the Orecchiette noodles were too thick for Mac and cheese and also under. We sent so much leftover meat back to the trash because it wasn't worth taking it with us. I did hear a lady at the table next to us that the hamburger tasted good. Would we go back. No.

Yelp
This was the perfect dinner spot for celebrating a birthday. It is located within Lone Mountain Ranch, where there is a free parking lot and a short walk to the restaurant. I really liked the set up of the inside with the rancher style decorations. Upon entering we were greeted by the hostess and they had an area for us to hang our coats. The service here was great and everything came out quickly. We start with their espresso martini which was absolutely delicious. To start with we ordered the elk meatball, which was one large meatball served with a red sauce, ricotta, and a grilled piece of sourdough bread. I'd never tried elk before but I really enjoyed this and found it not to be gamey at all. For my meal I ordered the filet with a blue cheese butter. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly to my liking. I ordered it medium rare and it was nice and juicy! My boyfriend had ordered the double bison short rib and he said his meal was incredible as well. I highly recommend this place, especially if you are going for a special occasion, since it is on the pricier side.
google avatar

Derrick S.

Yelp
Amazing food! The elk chops were delicious. We ended up sitting at the bar and eating dinner. The atmosphere was lively as the live music made it even more enjoyable. We will definitely come back.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
This place was awesome! From the time we were greeted to the time we left we felt like family. The saloon section is so cool, there was nice live music and the drinks were great. I recommend going early and grabbing a drink in the saloon then go to the restaurant for dinner. We had a lot - baked Brie, bison short rib, summer squash salad, Brussels, duck, mushrooms with goat cheese. The staff was great and friendly. We had Pierce as our server and Chef Max made most of our recommendations. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Jenn B.

Yelp
A charming and cozy dining experience in the Big Sky area - you'll definitely want to snag reservations early at this place. We could only get a later dining time (830pm) on a Saturday so we tried a lot of the starters and sides: Elk Meatball, Cedar Plank Mushrooms, Truffle Fries, Sautéed Brussel Sprouts. All were delicious - highly recommend. Tip: if you get there early, you can grab a drink at the bar. It's very intimate and even had live music.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Enjoyed the Christmas dinner buffet. We left with full bellies and the food wasn't bad - but when we compare meals of similar price point, we've had much better. The service and location were wonderful. Kiddo review (Joy, 7) I loved the treats there and the gingerbread men. They were so good. And my little sister loved the food. And so did my mom and Dad and me.

Yelp
Few realize where some of the best cattle in USA comes from and while Texas undoubtedly had a reputation for producing beef, the quality found in Montana is a good bit more concentrated, focusing on more rare breeds and a very high level of attention to quality. On top of it, the land of elk and bison presents some less common beasts to be enjoyed. Horn and Cantle, located at historic Lone Mountain Ranch, is a stunning place. It's a traditionally decorated establishment, with animal heads throughout, but also a good sense of taste in design. It feels local for a good reason, because it very much is. Despite being in a very isolated place far away from any cities, it manages to give a run to and actually exceed the meat from some of the best steakhouses in New York, Chicago and Atlanta to name a few. The prices here are also close to double for a similar cut of meat in a big city. The bone in tenderloin is so flavorful, it is unbelievable. The elk meatball is lean and tasty in its own way. The burger is spectacular. People working here are kind and pleasant. Beef is from Montana, elk from Canada and bison from Wyoming. Thus, for an authentic western meal, Horn and Cantle is an absolute must, as long as one sticks fo beef and bison.

Yelp
The staff was wonderful...Alexandra I think. It was a birthday lunch for me and it was incredibly lovely. Food was great, too.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved everything about Horn and Cantle! It was the perfect ambiance for a trip to Montana. The dining are, saloon, atmosphere, service, and the food! We had an amazing time and I'll definitely be visiting again when I'm there!
google avatar

Yelp
What a great atmosphere. When I think of Montana, this place captures it - post and beam, fireplace, saloon, cozy lighting, and views of the surrounding forest. We started with the ceasar salad and freshly baked cornbread - yum! Salad was dressed perfectly, crunchy romaine and homemade croutons. Cornbread was accompanied with honey butter and candied jalapeños. So good! For our entrée, we shared the Elk chops with risotto and root vegetables (see pic). Meat was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Call out to Carrie for excellent service. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Bison filet was perfect. Seared outside, perfectly seasoned, and super tender. Brussels sprouts was crispy and juicy, seasoned just right. Elk meatball came out warm but was still great. The marinara it was in was delicious. Austin Hope Cabernet is priced well for a nice restaurant and is a great bottle of wine. The patio had heaters so it was pleasant. The patio has gorgeous views. The saloon (bar area) has live music some nights. It was a great experience!

Brandon S.

Yelp
Beautiful place to visit, we visited Big Sky resort for some holiday Christmas Skiing with our Family. We wanted a nice special Christmas Dinner and we decided on Horn and Cantle, however for the price and food quality it was very disappointing. I would not recommend it for the price. Wait staff was great, however the cost of food was extremely overpriced. Similarly we had a better meal on the resort for half the cost. The Ambiance is wonderful however and we had a nice time. My rating is solely based on the highly overpriced buffet.
google avatar

Brooke H.

Yelp
Overpriced with the worst service. Every ask was an inconvenience for our waitress, we were going to order desert but at the end she was beyond over us. Being that this restaurant is so hyped up and they asked you a bunch of questions ahead of time- to confirm reservation, what the reservation is for, and even a photo of your party so they know who to welcome..... it fell soooo far from hospitable. Food was all subpar too. The vibe is cool but believe me there are other places to get the same vibe with 1000% better service. Save your money and please go elsewhere.
google avatar

Brooke Y.

Yelp
Horn and Cantle is likely the finest restaurant in Big Sky. If you can get in - and getting a reservation is not easy - it is a must visit for high-end local cuisine. It is fancy without being pretentious, striking the right balance between exclusive chic and comfortable warmth. A generously sized and lively bar accompanies the main restaurant. And the bar is a great option for those who can't get reservations in the main dining area. Tables are first come / first served and will require some waiting around the bar for something to open - but that is part of the fun and is exactly what we did with a large group. The bar had live music and a great vibe. It took about an hour for something to open, at which time we had the option of ordering from the bar or main dining room. Our group ordered a combination of bison short ribs and Tomahawk rib eye steaks. Everything was delicious - the steaks were seasoned and cooked to perfection and the bison was tender and flavorful. The only drawback is that portions are very small for the prices - and I say that as a New Yorker, where everything is expensive. The steak is priced at $245 and feeds two (maybe). The "double" bison short rib at $74 is really portioned for one. Wine options are good with reasonable mark-ups

Josh C.

Yelp
The staff was extremely gracious and accommodating for our group. The food, however is very mediocre. For the price charged, the food should be upper tier, but it absolutely is not. Elk chops were overcooked, Mac and cheese may as well come from a box in the grocery store. The green beans were fine, but not a stand out. This place is fine if you don't have any other options, but I would never recommend it to a friend."
google avatar

Gabe Y.

Yelp
Looked forward to eating here and while cocktail, starters and salad were fabulous, main entrees were not so great. Our elk chops were small, tough and nearly charred throughout. We also found the bison ribs to be very fatty. Ambiance was good but dark and found it hard to see our food. Some focus on the main courses is needed. Service was ok.
google avatar

Myles H.

Yelp
First off, the ambiance is amazing. Exactly what you would expect from an authentic, rustic Montana spot. And the service was on point and friendly. However, that's were positive feedback ends. The food was abysmal. Where to start. The trout had zero flavor, the short rib was dry, and the bolognese might have been the worst pasta I've ever had at a restaurant (or at a home for that matter). It was cooked to pure mush, had no real taste, and had almost no meat. A teenager who has never cooked before could have brought us more satisfactory dishes. I will say that the mac and cheese and the dessert were decent. But missing the mark on so many dishes for such a small menu (we basically tried everything), was actually astonishing. My only possible explanation for this place having such good reviews is that there must be ZERO competition in terms of food in the area.
google avatar

Kenneth J.

Yelp
Really great dining experience in terms of the dining atmosphere. Service was excellent and everything in the meal was paced well throughout. Definitely want to comeback when we return to Big Sky Resort area.

Yelp
The best tomahawk steak ever!! Love the ambiance as well. The best part of all was the cookie with Carmel and ice cream.

Yelp
I really liked this place in 2019. Had several great experiences here. Today was very different. Made a reservation a few months ago. Somehow I didn't think to ask for indoor seating in February in MONTANA.... So we were sat on their patio with some spaces heaters and plastic covering. No ambiance, no music. About 7 kids at the table next to us playing loudly on several iPads. Server warned us we would have to wait a while for our food and was very apologetic about it. It did take about 30-40 min to come out... they comped us 2 desserts which was nice of them. Trout was over cooked/tough and fishy. Skin wasn't crispy. No flavoring on the fish- no sauce or seasoning, literally 2 chunks of dry fish. For $42. I tried some of the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes and they were good. Had the bramble to drink. Watered down and super sweet, just wasn't good. Sadly I won't make an effort to go back. I think they've taken on way more volume than they can handle.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Our second experience was completely different than our first experience a year ago! The tomahawk steak is a whopping $245 and it's 30-40% smaller portion with fingerling potatoes vs mashed and some asparagus thrown on top. It was just not as good of a steak nor big of a steak for that price tag! It was a $80 steak at best. It's just completely overpriced for the portion and the quality. Pretty disappointed tbh. We did get to eat by the fireplace on the veranda but they doesn't make up for the change in the tomahawk experience. The cookie is still the move for dessert. Skip the tomahawk unless you ask first about portion size compared to a year ago!

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere and delicious food! Fire pits outside and beautiful after dinner scenery.

Yelp
The staff was friendly, and the food was flavorful and well prepared but given the pricing ($89 for a filet) you would like a much better dining experience. We were sat one table away from the kitchen at bench seating and the tables were way too close together such that we could completely hear the conversations at the tables next to us and likewise could not talk privately. We could literally hear every word spoken on either side at a normal conversation level. It was like going on a date with strangers and dining with two other couples but trying to constantly ignore them - very awkward. I realize that dining is a social experience but I now know a lot about two other couples that I don't need to. There was another couple that sat at the table right next to the kitchen and we heard them continuously complain for several minutes prior to being moved. It was hard to get up without having to turn sideways so as not to rub up against the table of the patrons next to us. I'd recommend removing some of tables from the room if you're going for this price point.

Yelp
Service slow but bar very busy the food was top notch I recommend the huckleberry elk chops and Brussels sprouts good IPA on tap strange cattle and wine very good choices $$$

Yelp
Excellent food and excellent service. Atmosphere was everything we would expect to find in Montana.

Yelp
Can't say enough about our experience here! Laid back and yet the food was nothing short of amazing. A warm cozy fire and epic cocktails made it even better. Nicholas the manager was accommodating to the food allergy in our party, and our server Kelsey was on top of every detail. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere!! this restaurant is very expensive. There's a bottle of wine for $18,000. I was able to get a glass for $16. The food is delicious, top-notch the ambience is incredible. The staff is very friendly.

Yelp
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Great food, excellent service, all in a world class setting.

Yelp
I'll start by saying I had high hopes for this place based on reviews. First, the property is beautiful and the restaurant itself has a very cool rustic vibe. They had live music playing which was just a tad too loud so you couldn't really hold a conversation unless you were yelling but other than that the restaurant itself was very cool. I ordered the special for an appetizer which I think was trout crudo (possibly some other fish) and it was outstanding; I literally would have licked my plate had no one else been around. I also ordered a cocktail which was tasty. For my meal, I ordered the bison NY strip steak and...it just wasn't good. It was incredibly tough and even with two different steak knives I struggled to cut through it. It had a decent amount of gristle and the taste was underwhelming. For $77 I was extremely disappointed, especially since it was recommended to me by the waitress. I may have just been unlucky and gotten the bad one of the bunch but it hurt to pay that much for something I didn't enjoy. I would consider going back but would likely try the fish or perhaps a different cut of meat next time.
