Where to Drink a Guinness in Portland | Eater

"For a proper pint in Portland, head to Belmont’s Horse Brass Pub, which has been a fixture in the neighborhood for close to 50 years. From the stucco walls and warm wood to the stained glass and dart boards, this little slice of the British Isles is practically made for cozying up near the fireplace and ordering a pint and plate of fish and chips." - Krista Garcia

The Best Fish and Chips in Portland, Oregon and the Surrounding Suburbs | Eater Portland

"The one and only Horse Brass is still serving its classic beer-battered fish-and-chips, which have developed a cult following in the pub’s years open. The fish and chips use generus hunks of Pacific halibut as a protein, served alongside tartar sauce, solid skin-on fries, and coleslaw. Traditionalists will find malt vinegar available for a judicious dousing. Visitors can also get a piece of fried halibut added to any other meal." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

13 Stellar Beer Bars to Hit in Portland | Eater Portland

"A Portland institution, The Horse Brass served as a major launching point for more than a few Oregon breweries back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Today it’s a lot less smoky, but still the same eclectic English pub decor, filled with dark wood beams, vintage beer posters, and the smell of fried fish and chips. The extensive tap and cask list of local and European beers comes, usually, in 20 ounce imperial pints, and visitors can play darts for free while nursing a heady English ale." - Alex Frane

13 Best Bars in Portland, OR | Condé Nast Traveler

"A venerable Portland establishment, the Horse Brass Pub is about as authentic of an English pub experience as you can get stateside. The cluttered wooden space is strewn with dart boards, beer and soccer memorabilia, and portraits of the bar's late, great founder, a guy who helped usher in Oregon's craft beer scene by pouring selections from some of the city's first breweries here. Speaking of which: The Brass is all about the beer, mostly English and Scottish style ales served in true Imperial pints: 20-ounce pours with frothy heads. There's also a dedicated cask system, with four or five daily ales poured by gravity, rather than CO2, for a less chilled, less carbonated, and more typically English experience." - Alexander Frane

Stopped into this place for lunch on a Sunday. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, which was welcomed. I ordered the halibut fish n chips and was not disappointed. The fish was cooked perfectly, moist and flaky with a thin crispy batter. The chips seemed to be hand cut and cooked until crispy, very good. The cole slaw had a spice to it, I'm thinking horseradish and it was incredible. Even the house made tartar was excellent. The service was quick and friendly. I plan to stop back in for a drink at the bar in the future.

Google
Never been to the UK but I’ve heard this is the place to go if you’re an Anglophile. Had the chicken caesar salad (only half size; full size was too big!). Excellent fish and chips and I’ve been told the bangers and mash is spot on. Have parking on site and a really cool, mellow vibe. 10/10

Google
Service was quick and kind. Limited vegetarian options but the veggie pastry/pie (potatoes, broccoli, cheese, onions) was very tasty and well baked. The potato salad was excellent. Generous portions. Dark inside the pub but that's a plus if you're light sensitive. Overall, very pleased with my lunch.

Okay, hold the phone, why am I just now finding this place. I think I’m in love. Our server was amazing. Very informative with the beer menu. Will definitely be coming back.

Google
I didn’t know what an authentic British pub is like, but this place is starting to change that! big selection of beers, whsikys and dishes from the British isles. Affordable pricing especially with side dishes like the banger sausage and fries as well as scotch. Friendly and knowledgable service every time, Brianne is great.

Google
Portland classic with god tier beer and awesome English food and great atmosphere. Every time I come here I forget how dark it when we enter- but then your eyes adjust. It’s filled with flags, lights, and memorabilia from everywhere but it feels like a classic English bar. Super stylized and feels authentic. The food itself is great. This trip our table has fish and chips, chicken pot pies, and French dips. All delicious and great portion. Beer wise whoever picks their beers has been stellar for years. Give them a medal! Awesome fresh hopped beer and tons of classics from the US and Europe. Fun hangs. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I’m at a great place to have a meal, beers, or hangs.

Google
Meeting my best friend here every few weeks over the last five or so years to help me exhale from my job as a high school principal. A pint of Guinness with bangers and mash. We’d talk through the evening, wondering about our Catholic upbringing and current lives, celebrated living, families, and the life-long loves of our lives. Maybe some single malt scotch to round off the evening. Always went home a better man. My Dinners With Ron.

Google
Maybe I just don't get traditional English/ British food as much as I think I do, but I was a little underwhelmed with all of the food honestly. The crisps were greasy to a fault, and I feel like my steak and mushroom pie had very little texture and could have used a second round of seasoning. The friend I went with says that their sandwich was very good, and they enjoy most of the food there so maybe it's just me.

Yelp
BEST FISH & CHIPS OF OREGON. There's nothing better. Please write to me, call me, send mail pigeon, because I have not found a spot that makes better fish and chips than Horse Brass Pub. Horse Brass is certainly a legendary establishment of Portland. Its dim lighting and interior design harken to that of classic English pubs. Each wall is filled with framed portraits and paintings of local pub icons and English royalty. I'm sure if you were to remove any single frame from the wall, you'd see a "tan line", showing just how long it's been up there. To me, that speaks to the pub's charm and authenticity to the kind of pub you'd find overseas. The staff is kind, friendly, and always cracking the driest of humored jokes. They're not afraid to tell it how it is; my most recent server thanking me for coming in on a Sunday due to how insanely crazy and packed it was Friday and Saturday-- noting that the food quality will also be supreme due to their small staff not being overworked. And that's great, because I've yet to have a bad experience from their kitchen. Despite going here for many years, I've still yet to have anything other than the halibut fish and chips. It's irresistible. I'm sure the other classic English offerings like their bangers & mash, chicken pot pie, and so on are just as amazing... but the sea always calls back to this fried-food sailor. The pieces are HUGE. Either come hungry or plan on taking some home (yes, it saves well the next day when reheating in an air fryer). I will always say that the sign of a good fish & chips is within the breading. So many places will not be very crispy, have more breading than fish, or worse of all, the breading will flake off by either holding it or after biting it. Worry not, because these massive chunks of halibut are so well breaded, crispy, and light unlike any other. And let me reiterate, these are big pieces of halibut. I've had many fish & chips from many places. And while it is always my desire to have a great place at the coast that serves the best fish & chips, I've still yet to find a place that comes even close to Horse Brass Pub.

Yelp
After many years of supporting the Horse Brass, I've gone for the last time, and share the same with all of my friends--they simply hire rude staff. My 85 year old mother went recently with two friends her age and the server used four-letter words with them repeatedly. You don't do that. It's not cool, it's not hip, it's not professional. Hire and train better, Horse Brass.

Yelp
Mixed thoughts on this so-called famed establishment. True feelings tend to side in agreement with Yelper Julie D. The contemplative argument by Tom B. will have you decide what side of the horse you are on. Give them both a read and show them some appreciation with a click on their review. Your choice ~ history vs. hygiene is what it comes down to.

Yelp
Overall a good experience. Service was friendly and helpful, our reubens came out of the kitchen in a reasonable time. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that the root beer I ordered was watery and the homemade chips were a little on the older end in taste. We will return.

Yelp
I was Jonesin' for Fish and Chips, we found this locally and it didn't disappoint! The Horse Brass is a nice and well established pub that reminded me of my old country. The fish was fresh and hot, lightly battered, and not greasy. Served with a generous portion of skin on chips (fries) that were large, hot, and crispy. Accompanied by tasty coleslaw and lemon slices, Malt vinegar on the table too. I paired it with a UK pint (20oz) of Fuller's ESB (Extra Special Bitter), to make a very satisfying meal. We also tried the marinated chicken sandwich which was generous and moist. The locale is appointed with traditional English pub decor (including horse brasses) There's off street parking in the rear. Service was prompt and friendly. The inside is a large space, a bit too big by UK standards, not too crowded for an early Saturday night. Would like to be back when it's crowded and hopping!

Yelp
The service was great! We recently had a small business mixer here! Jerry and the staff were accommodating and really communicative and easy to work with! Also really reasonable price wise! Customer service is slowly dying and places like this remind you how you should be treated!

Yelp
This place is not going to win any Michelin stars (and it wouldn't want to). It does win the following made-up awards: + Outstanding rotating beer list + Over-the-top UK kitschy decor and festive dark, cozy ambience + No frills fun + Kind staff who have been working there forever and care + Outstanding bread pudding (I also really like the Reuben and Fish + Chips, but there are more gourmet places if you're a foodie). Come here with your beer-loving, down-to-earth friends who want a cozy, fun night (or day) out. This place has been a Portland staple forever, and I hope it always remains that way.

Yelp
This is a great, longstanding English-style pub in Portland and during our recent trip to Portland, we went here twice, once for evening snacks an beer, once for lunch and beer. The place has a great British feel throughout int the decor, bar, appearance of old wooden beams, etc., not to mention all the British memorabilia all over. They have a large beer menu with many rotating items, and a great selection of craft beers, many from the Pacific NW region, plus a selection of good British beers. A huge plus for us, and a very British quality, is that they always have a small selection of cask ales. This time they had a cask bitter from Seattle and stout from Portland. That's the closest we can get here to having proper British (or Irish) cask ale. The range and quality are excellent overall. Food we've had is great. We had excellent fish and chips. The chips were not great, but good (3.5 -4 stars), but the fish was excellent - nicely battered, not overly battered, nicely cooked, crispy but not hard on the outside, and moist inside (5 stars). Tartarsauce was excellent (5 stars), cole slaw also excellent (4.5). We also had an excellent Scotch egg, not common to find in the US, and sausage roll. Both were very good(4-4.5). Service was good, not excellent both times. It seemed just a touch on the surely side but always staying just shy of actually being surly, and the servers actually were helpful and did their pretty job well, just in a very business-like way and getting to you just before you started to think that they had forgotten you. If service had been just a little bit better, I would gie an overall rating of 5 stars probably.

Yelp
Delicious fish and chips! Will return as often as we can to try everything on the menu. Friendly staff.

Yelp
It's been a minute since my last visit to Horse Brass. It still has an English pub feel. Upon walking in, the bartender looked at me with his resting angry face and didn't even greet me. The waitress was wiping off menus and glanced my way. I started to reconsider my visit. Had I walked into a secret English Mafia hangout? Do they not like new customers? Giving them a chance I finally chose where to sit hoping a giant bloke wouldn't ask me what I was doing here. That didn't happen, and I was able to order. I had the burger with the house made chips. Both were very good, and worth the price. They have good sized tap menu, pictures included. Overall it was a good experience.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for sometime. Finally went last night and enjoyed everything there. It was quite busy when I went but we got a table for two in the back. Our server was on it and very friendly, we really liked him. We each had a drink, cider and a sour, there was plenty to choose from. We had a scotch egg and fish and chips, and potato salad. Scotch egg was very good as well as the fish and chips. It came out nice and hot, it did take a bit, but it didn't really faze us because we were catching up. Now, I will say that the coleslaw that came with the fish and chips was different, I really liked it, it had horseradish in it, but that can be surprise. And surprisingly, our favorite thing was the potato salad. Chunky pickles, egg, and onion in there, the way we both like it. I definitely would come back again.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch around noon on a Sunday. Not too busy and found street parking right up front, by the entrance. The entrance was cool with all the wrought-iron. It's even cooler when you walk into the pub. The bar looks super old, and there's wood everywhere! Total English pub vibe. We were immediately given menus and directed to find a seat. There is plenty of seating with different rooms/areas to choose from. It was pretty dark inside, so we chose a table/booth near a window. Service was pretty slow as far as drinks and bill, but the food came out super quick! It wasn't very busy while we were there though...probably because it was Super Bowl Sunday. We ordered the three pieces halibut fish and chips ($26), banger dinner ($16), sausage roll with crisps ($8), and an Old Speckled Hen pint ($8). The fish and chips were really good, not too greasy. The hand cut fries were ok, not enough seasoning, though. They were pretty bland, along with the crisps. The tartar sauce and coleslaw were good. My husband really enjoyed the sausage roll, but the banger dinner pork sausages were overcooked and super dry. It was kind of a bummer. We spent $60 for lunch before tip, and it seemed like a lot of money for food that didn't really 'wow' us. Overall, we were happy we finally had the chance to experience this English pub, but we doubt we'll be back, considering the price and quality didn't match our expectations.

Yelp
Great food in a chill setting! Everything I've ordered has been delicious. I ordered the fish and chips, hamburger, fish Sandwhich and it's a good thing I don't live close by or I'd be in trouble. The restaurant is huge so there's lots of room for all of your friends! Enjoy the fireplace on those cold nights. The staff is nice and the service is great. _wendys_world_

Yelp
This is the absolute worst place in town to order a meat pie. The worst. Just look at the picture. They offered to replace it, and I declined, I simply couldn't trust the kitchen after that. Seemed like a nice enough place to get a drink, and it was clearly filled with happy people. None of whom were eating, so my bad.
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
Wow this place today was not hitting it at all! Hubby ordered steak and mushroom pie. Does the word Steak mean different dried up meats with pastry topping? Where was the juice or gravy ? Meats were pot roast, little chunks of corned beef drier than you could believe. Hubby gave it up and ate my other half of corned beef Reuben, again the meat was drier than a popcorn fart! Chips were great along with service but that was it.

Yelp
I visited Horse Brass Pub with one of my running groups back in December 2023. The decor was great. It was a large space but it felt cozy. The street parking was ok. The service was good. I got fish and chips. I also got hot tea. The tea was from a standard tea bag. It came in a little pot which was great and it was hot. The fish tasted fresh and the breading was great. The chips were thick and tasty. There was coleslaw but I didn't eat it. It was only because I'm not fond of coleslaw in general. I would definitely come back here if I get a fish and chips craving.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
Had the Beef and Mushroom pie and a pint. The pie was terrible to say the least. The cubed beef chunks were soooo dry and the filling barely had any flavor (let alone anything resembling mushrooms). The only thing I'd imagine coming close to this would be if y'all used a can of Alpo dog food and covered it with a pie crust. If this is the dish, please consider removing it completely off the menu. I felt sick to my stomach the rest of the night, thank you very little.

Debbie F.

Yelp
While the service wasn't as friendly as I could have hoped for, it was very nice. The halibut fish and chips are the most amazing I've ever had..... so delicious.

Yelp
While in town for Thanksgiving and in need of a good place to celebrate my mom's birthday, Horse Brass Pub delivered! We arrived around 1:30pm the day before Thanksgiving. The place was surprisingly quiet, but it meant more personalized attention. We perused the extensive beer list with our server and were advised on the best brews to try. We all ordered the legendary fish and chips. I don't understand how this place makes its fried halibut as moist and delectable as it is. But I am so happy with it that I'm not going to question it. The french fries and tartar also were nice complements to the meal.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
This place is very cozy for rainy winter nights. Fireplace, darts, vibes, great beer selection. Host, Brianna, was so nice and accommodating for our large group on a super busy night. Our server was not as nice and really didn't seem to like us very much. Still, he received a hefty tip, because he was obviously working very hard, so we did appreciate that, at least. He was attentive enough, however, whenever he would come to our table, we would basically have to beg to order more food and drinks. He would ask 2 of us if we wanted something, but no one else in the group! Then when we would stop him and say, "please don't go, we would also like to order", he would seem super annoyed at that. In any case, maybe try this place on a less busy night, and maybe don't bring a large group here, and you'll probably have a fantastic experience!

Sar C.

Yelp
As a person in the industry I've only "stiffed" 2 times in 2 decades. But every now and again, service is so passive aggressive and rude that it ruins your meal. Also, when your projecting that you aren't going to get a tip, you aren't going to get one.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best damn reubens I've had. Love the fish and chips too. Great beer selection. Little loud but it's a tavern so what ya expect. Pretty chill place.

Greg S.

Yelp
Been going here for 20 years. Service has severely deteriorated. Yesterday was last straw for me. Went in around 4:30 and it was not very busy. Guy standing at wait station saw me walk in and sit down (sign said seat yourself) . He proceeded to chat up bartender and person at bar while fumbling around with menus for almost five minutes. He even looked at me a couple times, made eye contact, but never came over. I assumed he wasn't a waiter and they were in back, changing shifts, or something was delaying them. Then a couple walked in and started looking around for a table. He took over menus, chatted them up and spent a few minutes helping them figure out where to sit, looking right at me a couple times. I shrugged my shoulders at him the last time and gave him a WTF look. He turned his back to me and proceeded to chat the couple up more while they were still trying to figure out where to sit (again, sign said seat yourself). At that point I had had enough stood up and left. Wasn't going to go through being ignored as they obviously did not care about my business (guess I needed to have an attractive woman with me to get service). Sat there almost 10 minutes and couldn't even get a menu. They are resting on their laurels and unfortunately with this level of service I don't think will be around much longer. I know they lost my business.

Yelp
I'm gonna give Horse Brass a 4. I've been here a bunch of times but never reviewed it. It's got great tradition. The first owner of Horse Brass was instrumental in exposing early craft beer to Portlanders and Oregonians as a whole eventually. If you like the traditional pub from the British Isles, which I do, you'll like the decor. It's got all the England soccer stuff in it. The food is good pub food., Only issue is the interminable wait for food and service in general. But especially the food. Best bet is to eat elsewhere and order food here a snack.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
I've known about this place for years, but life been busy. Finally got to meet up with friends for a late lunch. We purposely chose a time it wasn't likely to be busy. Looks like a typical mid-size British pub. I can imagine it gets lively on celebratory events. We all ordered something different. Large portions so was well stuffed! Love the twinkly lights! Will be back.
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
Great fish and chips! Plenty of beer. Fun playing darts with family and friends. If you don't have your own darts, they have some to borrow.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Neighhhhhh!!! "Ride on ride on in majesty. Your last and fiercest strife is nigh." Above is the vibe you get when you enter into this wonderful pub. Plenty of seating, darts, bar stools, etc. Great start to begin with. A group of friends came through and spent an after dinner beer here. Enjoyed the fish and chips and the pilsner. Quality food with quality people. I'd definitely want to come here with a group to debrief and do intentional spiritual good. Lots of parking as well, so come through when you get the chance!

Yelp
The Horse Brass has been a neighborhood staple for as long as I've lived in Portland. For a while, it was probably the smokiest place in town, and though the air is now clean, it still retains virtually all of the other charms that keep me coming back. Darts are a major selling point - they will loan you some with ID if you don't have your own. Food is mostly authentically British in nature, and they have 50+ beers on tap, so there's always something for everyone. The décor is what every cheesy chain strives for, and fails at. Here, you really feel like you're in a bar, and Portland is all the better for it.
google avatar

Jules T.

Yelp
Horse Brass Pub is pretty much exactly what you think it is... a cool, fun British Pub in the U.S. Everyone I've encountered who works here is super friendly and helpful. The reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5: the last time I went, my Scotch Egg was not great. I had one bite and let my husband finish it. (It was "just okay" to him. Not something he'd order again from here.) On that same visit, I also had the Bangers and Mash, and I didn't enjoy the Bangers. Maybe the sausage is from the same source as the Scotch eggs? Either way, it just wasn't for me. We also came at a time of day where there seemed to be a changing of shifts, and we were ignored for at least 10 minutes before having to ask the bartender for menus. However, once we had someone to help us, they were exceptional! Having said all of that, I've enjoyed many meals (including a birthday dinner with 10+ people) and drinks here, and everything has been great, otherwise! I will definitely be back, again and again.
google avatar

L M.

Yelp
Food was decent, service was awful. Don't go if you're in a hurry or very hungry. Took forever to order and not very friendly. Food wasn't good enough to make up for it. We didn't even dare order another round of drinks for fear of being stuck there for another half hour before being served.
google avatar

Yelp
Fish and Chips were AWESOME! Perfect atmosphere! The service was good but could have been more attentive. The biggest plus is they have Smithwick's on tap!!!

Yelp
There are very few reasons I have to make a trip to Portland these days, but I will say... the Horse Brass Pub is one of them. On this particular visit I arrived with a friend at 8:15 pm and easily found a seat. The atmosphere was busy and dark but comfortable. The corner table was lit well enough to easily see my menu. The place has a sort of cluttered feel to it, but hey... it's a pub. I came for the fish and chips and I was not disappointed. The halibut comes in a two or three piece version. I bought the 3 piece. At $19 it seemed a bit extravagant, but the portion was incredible. The batter is light and crispy and actually tastes good. The fries are hand cut slabs of wonder and the coleslaw is made in house. I am not a fan of the coleslaw. It's not bad, but it's very much on the savory (think horseradish) side of the flavor palette... their tartar sauce is slightly sweet and delicious. The service was good. Beer and water came easily and the waiter was attentive. Some of the conversations were noisy and a little "off color" so if you are romancing that special someone and want a more cultured level of conversation around you... be aware. I found it all to be interesting and humorous... I did not have the bread pudding on this visit, but I will tell you... it has always been delicious in the past. Alas, the fish and chips satiated my appetite and I am learning to not overdo it... Great selection of beers, ciders and wines. They pour an imperial pint of beer so when you see the price is slightly higher remember you're likely getting at least 4 oz more than you would elsewhere for the same price. Parking can be tricky. Look for the pull through in the middle of the block to the parking lot behind the building. Give it a try and tell them Tim sent you!

Yelp
It's closest to British pub in Britain but not quite. Here is Portland, to make sure that we didn't have expectations. The beef pie is just ok. Not great not bad. Scottish eggs are good. The sausage plate is tasty with beer which is offered very limited selection from the UK ironically, I remember one from Ireland and one from England on the Britain beer menu and the rest are local America beer. And minus stars as they changed one dollar each tester (like an ounce or less). Never had that experience before. You can taste as much as you want at other tab bars. I give 3 stars solely reason that the "pub" allows children just like in the UK. Our kiddo loves British food. Anyways we filled up with heavy food, didn't have room for fish and chip, so next time!

Yelp
First visit to the Horse Brass was great. Walking in the place was very dark, but I like the environment, and all the memorabilia and things to see on the wall. We were warmly greeted by our server, and we seated ourselves. Our wonderful server was very attentive. We enjoyed our food very much. The fish and chips were fantastic. We'll have to go back and try some other food items like their pot pies and sausage rolls. ;-) Parking: parking in the backside of restaurant either walking around the building or there is a passage to get to/from the parking lot.

Yelp
Unsure if I would return. We met some friends for drinks and food - Ordered a beer - it took forever to arrive and the waiter spilled it on the table setting it down. The glass was covered with sticky beer and so was the table. It was about 10 minutes before we could flag him down to get napkins to clean it up. We ordered the fish and chips and a pasty. The pasty was sub-par (would never order it again - we barely ate it) but the fish and chips were unbelievably delicious. Getting any service was beyond difficult. Our server was never around and talked about puking the night before. -Not really conversation we want to hear about while we're trying to eat. Overall, extremely disappointing and displeasing.

We made a date to meet friends for dinner here yesterday at 6pm. When we arrived the waitress told us they didn't allow children on the premises after 6pm. Half of our party was sitting at a table already and she kicked them out. We were four adults and three 5'3" thirteen year old girls. We explained we were simply there for dinner and a drink and then were heading home to get the kids to bed. She would not budge. I asked if we could sit outside on the patio to eat, she would not budge. I explained that it does NOT state anywhere on the website that children are not welcome after 6pm. She said it says plainly on the front door that children are not welcome. It does NOT say this anywhere on the front door. She told me it gets very rowdy there on a Sunday evening after 6pm. I look around and the pub was about half full, with respectable adults eating their dinners. Straight up lies and gas lighting. So bizarre. There was another woman working behind the bar pretending not to hear any of this and chose not to get involved. Horse Brass, can you confirm that children are not welcome on the premises after 6pm please? If that is the rule, would you consider adding that to your website and your Google business page so that families know in advance? I think living in Portland we get used to everywhere being kid friendly. If you are outside the norm then please let families know. Thanks. We went up to the Moon and Sixpence instead and they couldn't have been more welcoming. A sign above the door says children are welcome until 9pm. Our waitress was amazing and the food was fab. A lovely ending to what started out as a pretty upsetting evening.

Yelp
Every time we go, it's a pint of Guinness and by far, the best Fish&Chips in Portland.

Yelp
I was very excited but the food was not good. The service was excellent and the ambiance was what I expected. But the food is what is the most important. The scotch egg was way overcooked and the coleslaw had no flavor. The fish was good but it was too pricey for the quality and flavor.

Yelp
Great food. I had the Beef and Mushroom Pie, my friend had the Rueben. Both were great, fast service sitting at an outside table. Server notice us quickly and checked on us often, doesn't always happen at outside tables. I usually get the Fish and Chips, the fish is always spot on. Just wanted to try something different, plus the fish seemed to be a little more expensive this time? Huge selection of beers, many on tap. And huge selection of all types of whiskies and other spirits.

Yelp
This place used to be so great. The people that work there are so insanely rude. I gave them about 10 chances over the past year going there thinking the person serving me might just be having a bad day. Every time I go there I feel like I'm apologizing for just existing the whole time. Hope it changes someday. Won't be going back anytime soon.

Yelp
My family has celebrated the UK ambiance here at Christmas with my kids and grandkids for many years. We were told the rules had changed I am so surprised the Horse brass had not set aside tables for families as they advertised kids could eat there till 6. We saw empty tables but were not allowed to use them. This had been a family tradition since my kids (33 and 36) were young. While we were looking for some other place to eat 4 other families were also turned down. I am surprised a restaurant can afford to turn away that much revenue. My mom was from the UK and this was always her favorite. Now that she is gone it was something we wanted to remember her by. So sad They do have wonderful food but the kids welcome is just not true

Yelp
So far the best fish and chips I have found in Portland. Tonight I ordered potato salad in place of the slaw bc I'm not a fan of horseradish and the slaw is loaded with it ( the potato salad has it too but the potatoes must cut the strength) and they charged $3 for the substitute. Honestly I would have just preferred more fries because I only had like 8-10 on my plate and half of them were burnt.... Usually they are very generous with fries so I was surprised. Worst thing was the service. We have had the same guy the last two times and he has zero personality, is super slow, not very attentive and sorta rude to be honest. Last time I chalked it up to them being slammed but tonight they were much slower than the usual. We come here OFTEN and have introduced MANY friends to this place and I always recommend it to anyone on social media looking for fish n chips. I know we will be back but I won't be sitting in that guys section and I hope for almost $30 I get a much larger portion of fries ... they can even keep the slaw and potato salad. Hopeful for a better experience next time because we love this place:

Yelp
I've been regularly working the menu for a few months. I Loved the Public Coast Brewing Farm House Red! The Bangers and Mash satisfied, the potatoes were much better than just average. A rare 5-Star earned by overall factors, not just food.

Yelp
Great ambiance and you'll be transported to an old English pub. Great selection of beers and the fish and chips are great! If you like darts, there is a couple of boards. Parking can be iffy during business hours.

Yelp
The fish and chips is great. Next time I want to try their pies and sausage rolls. Service is not the best, but our server was nice just not very attentive for a near empty bar in the middle of the early afternoon.

Yelp
This place is very authentic. The dimly lit atmosphere and the decor is spot on for a British Pub. Almost as if they picked it up from the UK and transplanted it to the Portland area. They have a great selection of whiskey, scotch and draft beer. I had Basil Hayden (neat) and a pint of Walking Man (great tasting black cherry stout). I ordered the 2 piece halibut and chips and a sausage roll. The fish was really tasty, batter was in point. Light and flaky, just really well done. I usually douse my fish and chips in vinegar, but I made sure to get a real taste of this fish first. There was no need for vinegar, the fish was so tasty. The fries were thick cut and right up my alley, so much so that I went back the next day just for fries and another beer. Caution the full portion of fries is shareable, I couldn't finish them by myself. The tarter sauce was tasty, would have liked a bigger portion though. The sausage roll was nice, really well seasoned and super flaky outside covering. The coleslaw that came with the fish and chips was coleslaw. The chips (potatoes chips) that came with the sausage roll were good. Next time I go (I travel to Portland for work quiet a bit), I'm looking forward to trying their pies. I of course will get fries again. I will for sure make the trip to the Horse Brass Pub every time I get the chance. I bragged about this place in meetings the next day. It's legit.

Yelp
I have been CRAVING fish and chips for a while now and heard they were the best here, and NO LIE, they are delicious! Thick filet, lightly battered and fried. Yum! I even ate the fries and coleslaw (well a good bit of it anyway). Excellent tap list and GREAT prices on the wine by glass.

Yelp
Dimly-lit, dark woods, a bit sticky, Horse Brass is the consummate British pub, albeit with a Portland-caliber tap list. The interior is cozy, with multicolored fairy lights and oddball signs hanging all over, and wooden tables haphazardly strewn around the spacious floor. The tap list is truly impressive, and comprehensively divided by beer style, boasting something for every palate. I particularly appreciate that they list the suds' provenance and abv. The food menu is stick-to-your-ribs English classics like bangers and mash, a righteous fish and chips, and couple of filling, flaky-crusted pies. You can also cobble together your own meal from sides and add-ons like sausage rolls, scotch eggs, and chips. Portions are generous and justify the prices, which are on the higher side per meal. The service ranges from, well, serviceable to friendly and welcoming. I've never had a bad meal or a run-in with bad service here. During those dreary Portland evenings, a cozy night in a dark pub can be just what the doctor ordered, and for the rare warm day, there's a parklet with picnic tables. Truly a pub for all seasons.

Yelp
Got the fish and chips and a couple beers. Everything was great. Dark inside with string lights. Had a cozy vibe. Would come back.

Yelp
This was my last time at the Horse Brass, after having been there countless times over the years. I was there to meet a group, I asked if we had a reservation and was told they don't take reservations, I could sit where I wanted and stake an area out. Saw an ideal spot, around the fireplace in the back, but was told that I couldn't sit there because it was reserved for a staff-members family who was in from out of town. Get that? They don't take reservations, but I couldn't sit in an area that had been reserved. The food here is overrated. Chips were undercooked, barely crispy. The steak & mushroom pie tasted okay, but was a bit on the dry side - barely any sauce/gravy in it. And I've had their fish & chips before (which is supposed to be the best in town), and I can name 3 places that do it much, much better. And the server was downright rude. I understand the place was busy, but she flat-out ignored me several times, clearly in a rush to be anywhere else. I tried waving her down multiple times, finally she did come to the table and took an order for somebody else, then turned and left without even noticing that my glass was almost empty. I called her back, and her response was "What." When I told her I'd been trying to get her attention for the past 10 minutes and wanted another pint, the reaction was "Oh, okay." Not "Sorry I didn't realize," or anything else along those lines, just sort of a "Whatever." So, to recap: They won't take reservations from CUSTOMERS, but they'll reserve an area for staff. Food is not exemplary. Service was not just lacking, but actually rude. I know the Horse Brass persists based on its reputation and longevity, and losing my business won't affect them in the least, but I will not be back, and will continue sharing my experience with others who are asking about places worth visiting.
