It's been years since I went to the sf location, and I've been watching closely for the Palo Alto location opening. They're still in their soft opening, but we came about a week after they opened. Reservations are currently available on OpenTable, and I'm glad I made one because they were completely full by the time I left around 7pm.
The new location is tucked away in the back corner of Town and Country. I despise parking here and getting out of this lot, but it actually wasn't so bad at 5pm on a Tuesday.
Cocktails:
- Morning glory: interesting with the sichuan peppercorn and candy cap mushroom, both of which were mild, but it was a well balanced drink
- Birds of a feather: tiki but light
- Breakfast punch: their house clarified milk punch with hints of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (not excessively heavy on the cinnamon)
Food: we split everything family style
- Duck fat fries: topped with a red umami seasoning powder, duck fat snow (looks like cheese), and a curried ketchup
- Roasted cauliflower: a good portion of cauliflower of different colors, with a vegan corn dressing and a nice kick from calabrian chilis; I couldn't taste the matcha salt
- Fried chicken and three: a big portion of fried chicken thigh (boneless, easy to cut/split for sharing), with corn and mac and cheese - an interesting take on Southern food
- Mango lime "ceviche": a plant based tuna with mango, avocado, jicama, and chips. It didn't have the tuna flavor but had the right texture - interesting to try!
- Seared tuna: real tuna this time, with a nice beet ponzu, black sesame rice crackers, rice, and salad
- Cochinita pibil tacos: 3 per order
The menu has lots of options if you're vegetarian or gluten free (one of my dining companions has legit celiac, and she was really happy with the menu options).
Even though they just opened, service was on point. The servers were knowledgeable and gracious, and when they realized we had one other person coming, they got us a brand new table and helped us transfer everything so that we could be seated more comfortably. As I left, they even checked with me to make sure everything went well.
Welcome to Palo Alto, Horsefeather!
