The Best Restaurants and Bars in San Francisco’s Mission District | Eater SF

"If you choose to keep one of the places on this list to yourself, let it be Horsies. Since transitioning to new management, Horsies (formerly Royal Cuckoo Market) feels more loved than ever. If a glass of mulled wine or a hot apple dram on a rainy night isn’t enough to get you here, a night at Horsies with live music will change your mind." - Matt Tillquist

The Best Dive Bars in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Most people walk right past this tiny bar on 19th Street without knowing it’s even there. But if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the few spots at the bar, you’re in for a treat. The drinks are simple enough — wine, beer, and vermouth cocktails — but the horse-themed decor is scattered everywhere throughout the bar, from tiny trinkets on shelves to wall art to make you feel like you’re at your imaginary grandmother’s house." - Lena Park

Where To Forget The Internet Exists

"Despite opening in 2016, Horsies gives off the energy of a Mission fixture that existed before the rise (and devastating fall) of Ask Jeeves. Wine bottles cover the wall, string lights flicker overhead, vinyl spins, and it’s almost impossible to move around because it’s so small. Come to this horse-themed bar for a sense of community that’s thanks to the regulars that fill this space on the weekend, and the same two bartenders that run the whole operation. They only serve vermouth cocktails, wine, beer, and, for some reason, Underberg and hot dogs. The cocktails are great, and the occasional horse tchotchke makes the whole thing even better. Horsies Market & Saloon - Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Horsies is a tiny horse-themed bar in the Mission that serves vermouth cocktails, beer, wine, and, for some reason, hot dogs. The space is covered in wine bottles, string lights, and the occasional horse tchotchke that makes us think that maybe that horse girl in high school had the right idea after all. There’s about space for 10 people inside, and there’s some overflow seating outside. But the charm comes from sitting indoors, where you can admire the horse-themed decor while getting cozy with your friends (or a date). photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan" - Ricky Rodriguez

Google
A quintessential San Franciscan spot. A Capp Spritz to their playlist at their curbside outdoor seating is a great evening. One bathroom means there is a wait sometimes! 🐎

Google
Rating is for drinks (vermouth), not food. This is a cozy little bar with a bohemian vibe and a good menu of vermouth. I felt like I was in Barcelona when I walked in. The servers were super nice and helpful.

Google
Best bar-beer market in the city. Amazing vibe, artists and neighbors sharing beautiful stories all around. Julian is the awesome! He takes care of the best beer selection in town (prices are unbeatable), makes amazing drinks and has an extraordinary vinyl collection!

Fun vibe ! Really busy. Cool drinks (as long as you like vermouth)

Yelp
Love this place. Comfy, cozy. Lovely selection of drinks. No hard liquor, fyi. This is a place to hang with friends in the neighborhood. Great for one drink or an entire evening.

Yelp
So apparently this bar used to be called Horsies Saloon and recently was bought by new owners who used to be employees and is now called Royal Cuckoo Market. We fell in love with the interior, as it felt like a flea market had exploded inside; there are trinkets everywhere and horse knick knacks splattered throughout all corners. We each got a vermouth cocktail and loved the spices, sweetness, and lightness of them all. The prices are also on the much more affordable side compared to most San Francisco bars, which was a pleasant surprise. Also there was a pianist playing almost the entire time in the background; he brought the vintage vibes.

Yelp
This is a small neighborhood bar. Piano music played in the rear. They have a large selection of wine, beer and spirts for sale. We chose to drink in their outdoor area. Jack the bartender was very attentive. He shared the history of the bar.

Yelp
This is an update because I didn't like my review before. I was such a different person. I LOVE this place. This is the perfect, sleepy place to have a secret 3rd or 4th hot date. Highly recommend, everything is good here. :) heavy wine and beer focus.

Yelp
my absolute favorite bar in san francisco! their vermouth and mead are my favorites to order, john and julian are always so very nice, i'm so glad to have found this spot! they're always spinning good music in here, and if you like horses at all you need to check out this bar!

Yelp
This bar is weird but in the best way. There is horse memorabilia everywhere, a small piano in the back, Eastern European Knick knacks - it's so fun and different. The ambiance is warm and cozy, perfect for a cold night. The drinks are all low ABV, no hard alcohol but they are so delicious. Spritzes of all types featuring ingredients like beet juice. I love coming here before or after grabbing dinner on Valencia or Mission. It's such a different experience. There's also some sidewalk seating if you come during the day and want to drink outside. The bartenders are kind and willing to offer suggestions based on your preferred flavor profile.

Yelp
This place feels like a pillar in the community. Whether I'm grabbing a few bottles of natty wine to go or staying a while to hear some vinyl over drinks, I always see regulars who feel right at home. Even my parents visiting from New Hampshire felt the magic when they attended a live piano night and got a little toasty. It has that warm, welcoming vibe you won't find just anywhere.

Yelp
Tonight was my first night inside this bar, and now it is my favorite bar in San Francisco. I can't believe I lived 2 blocks away for 5 years and this was my first time inside. I usually hate bars. But this one I love, because: 1) They only have low ABV drinks and I hate strong drinks. Perfect for me! The cocktails are really interesting and not overly sweet. 2) They have a great piano player and you can actually hear each other talk. 3) It is cozy, comfy, and casual inside and you can just chill and hang out. You feel like you're sitting in someone's library. They even have a small food menu. 4) It's also a market if you want to pick something up for a party / dinner. What a little gem. Can't wait to come back soon.

Yelp
A wonderful place for a drink or a nibble with friends. Nice booze and wine selection too

Yelp
Such a great spot to go to! The atmosphere here is always very cozy yet lively. The drinks are wonderful too! The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly and will happily give you suggestions if you need them. The music set up here is also amazing. The Royal Cuckoo has a lo-fi based set up with vinyl records on play to keep the vibes going. I would definitely recommend stopping by here for a cocktail or two!

Yelp
I love stopping by after work, and saying hello to everyone! Owners, other bartenders, other customers... everyone is so friendly, it really is a neighborly bar. Love the amaro drinks. Great soups, cheese boards... AND I just discovered the Nourish Bread!!!! Made by Sugarplum Bakery, it is very high protien/ low carb. Very close to something I make when I have time( it's been months and months...) I slice it and freeze, then pull out a slice and toast for a super delicious and healthy breakfast w/ a lil' cheese or avocado.... Thanks RK!!!!

Yelp
Love this place! Great vibe, artful drinks and warm hospitality local owners Debbie and Paul are lovely and also own my favorite bar in San Francisco, the Royal Cuckoo

Yelp
Loved this little spot in the Mission! We'd walked by on our way to dinner, and all felt the need to come by to check out this part-market, part-wine-bar. There's also a cocktail list, baked goods, cheese/charcuterie boards, etc. Such a wonderful, cozy atmosphere and it seems like a place for locals to feel at home in this hustle bustle city. The market has an excellent selection of everything you could want to bring to a kickass picnic at Dolores. They close pretty early, so if you're a night owl make this a place to start your night. You won't regret it. The staff is lovely. Already can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I've been coming to this shop a while now. It offers an extensive selection of wine & spirits without the 'corner shop' prices. This little market has everything from Champagne, wine, and craft beers to Whiskey and Pastis. Grab a few stems of flowers in front of the store. They offer fresh Dahlias, Sunflowers or whatever flora fits the season. The shop keeper is super friendly and very excited about being in the neighborhood. Welcome! The hours are great too! 9am - 9pm, so if you're on your way to dinner and need to bring 'something', pop on in and choose from the vast selection!

Phil C.

Yelp
They have a piano in the bar, it has no sign on it. Last night, a customer was doing a great job playing that piano, he was clearly a trained musician and yet, the fun police/surly bouncer, actually told him to stop playing it. "That costs money to tune". Not making enough money charging ten dollars a beer? Don't go here if you want to have fun, it's not allowed, that costs too much money.
google avatar

Victor G.

Yelp
Royal Cuckoo Market is mostly wines, snacks, pastries, coffee, and a bunch of stuff i didn't look at. came in without putting money in meter. buys: coffee (2) -smooth, slightly bold, maybe organic, semi-great coffee drips: -cashier was too busy with other chores to service. didn't matter. left $$ in plain sight so could see it.

Yelp
Wow! We just stumbled upon this place today and were pleasantly surprised! This is a great upscale shop featuring a wide selection of quality beer, wine, and liquor. They also carry bread, cheese, jams, chocolates, and other foodie items. It's a great place to pick up supplies for a wine and cheese night or picnic, grab a hostess gift before heading to a dinner party....or simply stock up on goodies for the home. The staff is friendly and welcoming. A great addition to the Mission!

Yelp
I am IN LOVE with this place. There is nowhere else like it. Each time I go they're playing a perfectly quirky record that adds to the overall magical experience. I'm a big fan of the low ABV cocktail options, and their homemade soups are always delicious. I also appreciate the top notch selection of Aquavit available in the market, which helps me pretend I'm back in Sweden. Last but not least, there's always a fresh tchotchke to discover climbing the walls to make you smile. I wish more places possessed the charm and whimsy of the Royal Cuckoo Market. Don't miss out!

Yelp
This place is a rare find. We were lucky to be there on a night where they had live music (a singer and a mini-organ player). The space is super small but that makes it fun. Bar upfront serving beer, wine and special drinks. The market is in the back with an awesome selection of high end spirits, wine and beer. The music was so fun. The singer was exceptional and hilarious. The place reminds me of a Christmas Eve with family and friends. Everyone had so much fun. Definitely stop by if you're in the Mission District. Grab a drink and find that rare bottle of booze to take home. I honestly cannot get over how every single decoration has a story. Paul, the owner, is super cool and will give you the story behind the "horse theme" and where each piece of art made its way to the shop. Don't miss this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute, small local shop that just opened up in The Mission! The owner, Paul, has a cool concept: espresso machine for your coffee fix in the morning along with a pastry, nice liquor for the evening, and cool gifts for anytime. There's a cozy feeling inside the shop, primarily because of the custom-built wooden shelves (thanks to Paul's nephew) plus the old timey singers crooning from the record player on the front counter. Can't wait to see what they stock on the rest of their shelves. Once they're officially open, their hours will be 9 am to 9 pm, but don't quote me on that!

Yelp
What a gem! Cuckoo is your perfect stop before Sunday afternoon in Dolores Park or on the way to a dinner party. Fancy crackers, high quality eggs, freshly squeezed OJ, meats & cheeses, sauces, toiletries, small gifts, and more. Bi-Rite fans will be at home. Mixologists will also love this place... specialty spirits, amaros, martini fixings, and bitters. Also they've got a selection of wine and many imported beers. Prices are good because they're buying through the affiliated bar. I had a perfectly light and crisp panini for lunch (smoked turkey and bacon with swiss & jalapeno jelly, omg). They've got coffee, soups, sandwiches, and snacks. You can tell that this place was lovingly curated by people who know what they're doing when it comes to food and booze. I live a block away and I'm excited that next time I need a shallot or Japanese whisky at 9pm, I know exactly where I'm going.
google avatar

Yelp
We loved the live music (young, nationally touring Hammond organ star Will Blades played when we walked in). We also loved the vibe with the red walls, red lights and vinyl records behind the bar, and the friendly bartenders as well. This place has got a great vibe, and if you're a music-lover, it's a must to check it out. We were visiting from LA and so glad we came by.

Yelp
What a gem of a market. This little shop was the perfect place to get some vino and chocolate for one of my dearest friends as a thank you gift for hosting me during my stay in SF. There's plenty of wine, beer and spirits to choose from as well as your assortment of cheese, soup and even sandwiches if you're looking for something to grab and go on your way out. If I lived in the city I would absolutely stop by here before heading to a picnic in the park with my blanket and basket of cutlery. I love supporting local businesses and the man who owns this one doesn't make that hard to do at all. He was very helpful and friendly when we came in looking for the perfect bottle of wine. After talking to him for a little bit, I found out that "The Royal Cuckoo" (a family run business) also has a bar on Mission St. as well. Definitely stop by if you're in the mission and are looking for a place to grab some alcohol or snacks!

Yelp
Love this place - had so much fun at Horsies Saloon, very cool vibe! Enjoyed the Pony Express drink too.
google avatar

Hank S.

Yelp
Great place except for the old gray haired dude. Must be the owner, pricks like that normally can't hold a job.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Was told to go to The Royal Cuckoo and Google maps sent me to the market. So I missed my colleagues, but I had a great drink at the Horsie's Saloon inside this little market. Great mood lighting, super nice bartender, and very interesting drinks. My companion had one with beet juice and cardamaro and I had one with cava and muddled mint. So refreshing, and just a very cool joint.
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
Love the Cuban feeling of the market/bar (it's not Cuban btw). What I mean is how it transports you to a better time where life was slower, richer, and full of a subdued heartbreaking nostalgia of the past.

Nnena U.

Yelp
These people are so much fun. They were a bright spot before COVID. During COVID they have been SOOOOOO wonderful for the neighborhood. If you come at the right time someone is playing the piano inside and you can dance in the sidewalk. The spritzers are tasty. The staff is fun. DONT LEAVE US!
google avatar

Alisha A.

Yelp
The best booze selection I have ever seen in SF. Great selection of every liquor, lots of wine, dry goods, speciality foods, cheese, eggs, milk, beef, bacon, frozen food, produce, chocolate, and the list goes on and on. I love this place and think its a great addition to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Nilay P.

Yelp
Amongst the other speciality items they stock- the spirits are really great. They have lots of craft items. I needed Campari and the owner, Charlie suggested a small batch, Italian provider, which was excellent. I look down on Campari now. :) Great items, great service. Exactly what you want in a gourmet neighborhood grocery.
google avatar

Yelp
I've never wanted to hang out in a market before, but when I go into the Royal Cuckoo Market I just want to linger and hang out! Well, good news for me, they just added a wine bar so now I can hang out and not seem like a total weirdo! Come in for lunch items for things like fresh soups, daily-made sandwiches, cheeses, chips and fresh coffee or grab some good smelling goodies for the home such as lotions, candles, and other what-nots! Not pretentious at all, the owners are friendly locals who are just super cool and love sharing their space with other local residents and fellow business owners such as myself! By the way, they also own one of the coolest local dive bars, with the same name, in the mission/bernal corridor. Live music, weekly organ player, affordable drinks, and cool vintage vibe!
google avatar

jacob l.

Yelp
Great mixed use of such a tiny space, and impressively inventive cocktail list considering they are all made without distilled spirits. Just stopped in for cappuccinos this time and will come back again!
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. Best selection of alcohol in the Mission - hands down... Little bites remind me of Parisian markets that owned my heart traveling. The folks here are sweet hearts with great customer service and the goods to satisfy most of your neighborhood needs - it's a classic styled "bodega" that reminds me of the bodegas of Europe, except now I can read the signs. Go here, and you will find something special. I promise.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Wonderful spot. There is a lot of interesting liquor from all over the world as well as a variety of snacks and other drinks to purchase. The ambiance is what sets this place apart to me. There is a unique sense of warmth and nostalgia permeating through the wood and amber red glow of the lighting. The decor is a combination of Scandinavian and old Western imagery. A friend of mine recently described it as an embodiment of the Lee Hazlewood album Cowboy in Sweden, which describes it perfectly. Obscure country music references aside, this is a sweet place that is worth checking out.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Quaint little market with great gourmet specialty items. Nice spot to drink a coffee outside.
google avatar

Allan G.

Yelp
One of the best liquor stores in the city. Nuff said. Everything you need to make rare cocktails can be found at this hidden gem. Simply amazing.

Eugene K.

Yelp
I used to live around the corner from this market - it was my go to spot to buy interesting wines / liquors from around the world, and also a good spot to grab chill drinks with (a small group!) of friends. Their selection is pretty varied but includes a lot of local wine and liquor, which is always good.
google avatar

Drew P.

Yelp
Not a single hipster, beardo or man-bun in sight in this place. Owner is cool and the shop is unique. We will be back!

Veronica R.

Yelp
This really cute spot in Mission, used to be a life saver: amazing selection of food and alcohol, opened until 10pm, conveniently located one block from home, managed by a fun gentleman. I thought it couldn't get any better, until I stopped by a few nights ago: They have just remodeled the whole place, and WOW...the quality of their cocktails is unbelievable, their wine list outstanding, the service impeccable, and they play vinyls!!! My new, favorite bar.

Webster P.

Yelp
Check out my other reviews. I never give anywhere a poor review. If I don't like it, I just go somewhere else. Not this time. I have shopped here for years because of their extensive selection of offbeat liquors. I've always enjoyed coming in and perusing the selection prior to making a purchase. In fat, I did most of my Christmas shopping for business colleagues in this store this past year. But no more. Today I came in with bicycle and was treated in a terribly rude and aggressive manner by the clerk, who knows that I am a steady customer. He demanded that I take my bike from the store immediately and spoke in a way that was not appropriate for any customer, let alone a good customer. I told him that I would never shop here again (and I won't) and his closing remark was fine, don't worry, he won't serve me anymore. All over a bicycle. Spend your money locally, but spend it at a store that appreciates you as a customer. Go over to Valencia and 16th, they have a good funky selection there, too.
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
It's expensive. However, in this little pocket of the mission there aren't many choices for corner stores or liquor stores. The few that are on my 2-3 block radius are just as expensive for sub par drinks. I'm not into paying ( or drinking) a 12 pack of Coronas for 20 bucks. They have nice beer, nice snacks, nice ice cream options and nice staff. Love it.
google avatar

Corey J.

Yelp
Neat little store that has a bit of everything: coffee & pastry, some produce, soup/sandwiches, craft beer, liquor, wine, and both local bay area goods alongside imported delicacies. I stop by several times a week. Friendly people behind the counter, nice airy space, and a cool record spinning most nights.

Carl C.

Yelp
Great place. Lots of interesting stuff I particularly like their coffee. It's not fancy but it's really good and really, really inexpensive..
google avatar

Prattle P.

Yelp
how come i lived in sf for 18 years, regularly patronized the bar and never knew of this market until im moving out of town?!?! i cant help but believe this is a sign that my life is indeed cursed. damnit. well, if you happen to be in sf visiting or living and you need any of my two favorite things (fancy booze & fancy soap) then dont even go anywhere else. just go here because they will set you up right and theyre not yet packed to the gills like the slightly overrated bi-rite market. also, the chap behind the counter is knowledgeable and nice. support them, since i cannot!
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
The owner is super nice. Everything is well organized and, for the most part, really good quality. Every time I walk by they have something new. Recent additions include fruit and Ritual coffee.
google avatar

S Blair P.

Yelp
stumbled upon this little treasure one day in search of chocolate. it is definitely even better than it gets in it's category. it's sort of a tiny, very well curated, aesthetically pleasing, bodega/liquor shop. i'm not much of a drinker so no bottles for me, but i will go out of my way going forward to head over here for coffee, snacks and maybe the occasional "what am i going to make for dinner!?" because it seems that he could help me make that happen and it would be yummy. so, why am i so enamored with this place? stop in some day and see for yourself. you'll walk out with a treat and just a little bit happier than when you went in is my guess. and a little bit is a good thing.i like my happiness in small doses. too much either doesn't end well or wasn't real. i'll keep stopping by for my small doses.
