"San Miguel de Allende’s hotels tend to highlight the city’s colonial-era charm, but Hotel Amparo adds a generous measure of cosmopolitan contemporary design to its hospitality cocktail. It’s set in a 300-year-old residence surrounding a verdant courtyard, and with just five expertly renovated rooms, it still retains some of the atmosphere of a private home — albeit one with a rooftop bar and Le Labo bath products." - Mark Fedeli

"Set the scene.Compared with some of the stuffy neighboring hotels, this is warm and inviting and harks back to an era when writers and painters travelled in exclusive circles and stayed at each other's homes—it’s almost as if you're staying with the Fitzgeralds in the South of France or in one of Neruda's tucked-away Chilean enclaves. Yet the aesthetic is fresh—and even edgy for the town—with abstract art and mid-century pieces in bold prints and patterns. What’s the story behind it?When a former mayor’s residence went on the market in the cobblestone town center, first-time hoteliers Mariana Barran de Goodall and Taylor Goodall (they were married in town five years earlier and fell in love with it) jumped on the place. They wasted no time enlisting Texan designer Aaron Rambo to transform the 300-year-old property, refreshing original details such as Belgian-wood panelling, concrete fireplaces, and crystal chandeliers, and adding Aztec-inspired murals by local artist Lucas Rise and traditional textiles and needlework by Hibiscus Linens, Barran de Goodall's own textile brand. What can we expect from our room?Cross the central courtyard lush with bougainvillea, agave, and stately palms and through two sets of wrought-iron and glass doors to enter the spacious Amparo room, which opens onto a bronze four-poster king bed layered with bright Oaxacan textiles. Looming above an original concrete fireplace is an oil painting of dapper Porfirio Díaz, one of Mexico’s longest-serving presidents, and whose presence not so subtly announces that you are indeed in the presidential suite. An orange velvet chair and a chaise lounge in a fresh palm print keep things modern—as do the bedside USB ports and a Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speaker. How about the food and drink?Morning coffee and breakfast—solid dishes such as huevos rancheros—are served in the courtyard, which opens into a coffee bar with San Miguel’s first (and only) La Marzocco espresso machine. Lunch and dinner happen at the rooftop restaurant Bar Margaret, where Latino-Carribean small plates, including shrimp and grits topped with pico de gallo, pair wonderfully with selections from the bar's natural wine list. Locanda, opening later in 2019, will have a rotating menu of handmade Italian pastas and Sicilian wines. Anything to say about the service?Attentive—no request seemed too large, from breakfast in bed to last-minute reservations at the city's top restaurants. Who comes here?Young and affluent. They've seen the world and their personal style and travel experiences prove it. Unpretentious but appreciative of the finer things. They know Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera only scratch the surface of Mexico's prolific art scene, and they appreciate top-notch interiors and top-notch mezcal. How does it fit into the neighborhood? It’s located in the town center, where San Miguel de Allende's Spanish-Colonial heritage is on full-display, which makes its forward-looking design and unfussy hospitality—in a sea of at times stuffy, deliberately nostalgic hotels—all the more appealing. Is there anything you'd change? No, Mariana Barran de Goodall and Taylor Goodall nailed it. Anything we missed? The Le Labo bottles in the bathroom were almost as lovely as the mezcal-infused chocolates from Mexico-City based BUNA that were left during turndown. Is it worth it—and why?Honestly—between the attentive service, elegant rooms, and impeccable dining—they could get away with charging more." - Michaela Trimble

Rubén and Montse were incredible hosts, curating a luxurious and very special stay for us. They made sure everything was seamless, from airport transfers to arranging a driver for our wine tasting appointments. The hotel is beautiful and well designed, with cozy fireplaces, stunning outdoor/common spaces, and everything you need for a comfortable 5 star stay without sacrificing character. The food is also excellent, we can’t wait to come back when the new restaurant is open! When we come back to San Miguel we will definitely be staying at Hotel Amparo again.

Had the wonderful opportunity to stay here for about 2 weeks in the summer. The experience was unreal. Was the only guest and was treated like royalty. The vibes and atmosphere is amazing. Almost like a curated museum with the amazing art and interior design has inspired me after at home. Food is amazing , area superb and staff is absolutely the best. I will be staying at Hotel Amparo many more times. Lock this hotel down for your visit it’s such an experience. I want to get drinks with the owner and discuss art.

Elegant and classic hotel, a real gem in the heart of SMA. Service was the most personalized and attentive we've ever experienced. Thanks a million to our hosts Ruben and Monserrat for making our two-week stay in the town even more memorable.

Highly recommend Hotel Amparo-- we loved our stay. The location is in the heart of San Miguel making it easy to walk everywhere. The hotel is beautiful and the center courtyard is an oasis. Our room was lovely and the bed was extremely comfortable. We ate several meals at the hotel and the food was fantastic. Eugenia and Ruben so welcoming and helpful! We will be back on our next visit to San Miguel.

Excellent creative retreat with Hibiscus linen in San Miguel. I needed a break from the busy city life and I feel re-energized! The experience is topped by an incredible staff. Eugenio the manager, extremely knowledgeable on the art of making tequila. His class gave me a total new perspective on Mexican culture. Pepe the chef who taught us delicious simple receipes to make at home! Ruben and his perfect sense of humor and let's not Maria Mrs Hibiscus Linen our hostess who is redefining the rules of boutique style hospitality on her own. I had a lovely time !

This is the most beautiful hotel I've ever seen -- every detail is gorgeous and intentional. We stayed in the Amparo suite and it was even better than imagined! The room itself is huge and the bathroom includes 2 sinks along with both a shower and a bathtub. It is so large that, when we got massages arranged by the hotel, both the massage tables fit in the bathroom. All toiletries are from Le Labo. The bed was so comfortable and the area is very quiet at night. The service was unparalleled. Ruben, specially, is a master hotelier. He runs a tight ship and is an absolute joy to talk to and get to know. He provided us with anything we needed at any time, even calling the bus company to tell them we were stuck in the traffic the day we left. He is truly a gem of a person and we miss him already! We also greatly appreciated the welcome drinks after the trip from Mexico City. Overall, with an abundance of hotel choices in SMA, Amparo is in a class of its own. Every wonderful thing you read is true and this is the ultimate place to relax and rejuvenate. My only very small tip for the hotel would be to have refillable pitchers of water so we can be a little more sustainable and a little less dependent on glass bottles. Otherwise, fantastic!

We first stayed at the Sierra Nevada hotel, thinking that this would be a little bit of a downgrade afterwards, but oh boy were we wrong. Amparo blew us away! Food was amazing and the staff was so attentive to every need. Quiet, relaxing and beautifully decorated.

I had a wonderful stay at Amparo. I loved my room-El Jardin. It was quiet and clean and the decor was so charming. The patio area (off the room) was so serene and lovely with a fountain adding to the peaceful vibes. It was hard to leave the quiet of the hotel but always nice to come back to such a relaxing space. ROOM-So inviting. STAFF- So lovely & helpful. BREAKFAST-Included & delicious and they accommodated my sans gluten and vegano. BAR- Such a cool vibe and Gabriel makes amazing drinks. COFFEE BAR-much needed and so adorable. LOCATION-Perfect. I just loved my stay and will definitely book the next time I am in town. Check out photos-Instagram @keeplefttravel

Yelp
Hotel Amparo is a beautifully curated haven in the midst of color, culture, and art. The facility is a home turned hotel that is unique into itself. The tile, art, and fireplaces throughout create the desire to stay, as enticing as playing outside can be. Bernardo and the team befriended, and cared for us in such a genuine way that we look forward to returning. Javier taught us a jewelry making class in where we got to choose our own stones! He patiently guided us, and excitedly taught us that there wasn't a mistake that couldn't be adjusted... kinda like life! Viridiana recommended we visit El Charco del Ingenio since we enjoy gardens. We had such a great time! Her suggestion on the menu were great! Gabriel at the Bar wowed us consistently with mocktails, and connected us to an incredible barbershop called Hecho Hombre. Bernardo and the team also made the impossible craving of arroz con leche a reality happen, and my husband got to enjoy Mazapan for the first time!!! Incredible!! We are staying our last day, and half because in between the gardens, terraces, foyer, and guest living room we have more to enjoy!!! We are thrilled about Christmas, and you can't believe how lovely it is!!!

Yelp
We live in San Miguel de Allende, and this is THE best restaurant in town. Unbelievably great, as well as the service, and even the pricing, and don't forget the Tempranillo by the glass, simply outstanding...And the hotel itself was voted 12th best in Mexico by Condé Nast. They've been open less than a year. We discovered it yesterday evening...and we plan on going back there tonight.
