Le Saint-James

"An iconic establishment if ever there was one. For many years, Le Saint James was the realm of its avant-garde founder, chef Jean-Marie Amat; he commissioned Jean Nouvel to redesign his premises, which opened in 1989 and became a benchmark in design – and now they are to undergo major renovation works again. The restaurant pays tribute to Nouvelle-Aquitaine producers by elevating the fruits of their labours, from Gironde caviar to Bazas beef. Chef Mathieu Martin's appealing cuisine is refined, delicate and as fresh as can be, cf. the remarkable, perfectly cooked tuna from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The chef makes no bones about his love of plants, eg tomatoes, plain and with chilli, clear soup. The legend of Le Saint James lives on!" - Michelin Inspector

Restaurant was sadly very unpleasant. The food was fairly good, but given the price and star, one would expect a lot more. Service was absolutely shocking, and particularly let down by a supercilious younger waiter. The ambience was also quite sterile, and felt like a Holiday Inn dining room. Bordeaux has much better restaurants at much better prices, and this is not worth the journey out of the city

Very nice hotel a little away from the city of Bordeaux - amazing views over the city, amazing outdoor pool, great rooms, lovely staff and perfect service. The intern at the reception was very lovely and gave us great tips for Bordeaux and vineyard visits - thanks :)

We were here for our honeymoon last year and all I can say is wow!!! From waking up and seeing the grape vines to taking a couple of pictures on the motorcycle in the room we had an amazing time, we will never forget our time here. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend staying here. Also do yourself a favor and order a bottle of wine from the vineyard and have some cheese at the bar. 10/10

I'm surprised no-one has reviewed the hotel on tripadvisor before now!|We stayed for 2 nights in the Hauterive St James in Aug 06, as friends were getting married nearby. We chose the hotel because it looked so incredible different, and the location was perfect.|The hotel is located in a little village called Bouliac, located above Bordeaux. The village is very pretty, with an ancient church, and fantastic views over the city. |For the first night we stayed in one of the hotel suites (unfortunately this wasn't available for night 2!) The room was spectacular, with a huge, very high king size bed in the middle of the room, and floor to ceiling windows on 3 of the 4 walls. The windows have electric blinds, which are controlled by switches beside the bed - no soft furnishings here, as even the floor is concrete. Probably not to everybody's taste! The room overlooked the hotel vineyards, with Bordeaux beyond, and the view from the bed was astounding.|That night we decided to eat in the hotel's brassierie restaurant (LCafe de l'esperance) which is in the village, a short walk from the hotel. It was a very friendly buzzy restaurant with the menu chalked up on a board - you just choose your meat and they bring it with chips and green salad - very simple, but very good!|Before dinner we decided to have a drink at the hotel, on the lovely bar terrace. We asked for two vodka martinis, and received tumblers containing 1 part vodka, 1 part vermouth and a few ice cubes. The bar man serving us was the same staff member who had helped with our bags, so maybe they run down the staff numbers in August, but they really should employ a decent barman!|The hotel has a 'haute cuisine' restaurant, which we didn't try, as we were at the wedding the second night, but other guests commented very favourably on the food. Next time! They also have another brasserie just outside the main gate, which was closed when we stayed (a lot closes in France in August!).|There is a small swimming pool beside the vineyard, which looked very inviting, and we wish we'd had more time.|Despite all the positives, there were a few areas for improvement. The hotel is looking a little tired, and there was a noticeable damp smell in the public areas - indeed there were air fresheners plugged into all the sockets. The B&O hifi in our suite had a broken cover, and the decor, although striking, is looking a bit dated. Potentially the owners are waiting until winter to make the improvements. We would certainly consider going back - it would make a fantastic weekend break, as it's just a short drive from Bordeaux airport. You could leave work on Fri, fly to Bordeaux then hire a car and be at the hotel in time for a Cote de Boeuf at l'esperance, then spend the next day relaxing by the pool or in the city before a gastronomic Saturday night dinner in the hotel restaurant! Maybe next year...!|

A unique place An extraordinary view of Bordeaux at night. A painting exhibition / sculpture full of sensitivity. A table that we will remember for a long time for its originality and its associations of perfumes. Friendly staff, focus on Guests. well, either you break the piggy bank ... or you've been offered a Wonderbox , anyway you leave them happy!

Google
Fantastic experience at le saint james. Been to many top restaurants in Bordeaux, this was the best. From the minute we walked in, staff were attentive, setting was great. Food was served at perfect temperature. We ordered the menu tour Magie, with the wine pairing. Very impressed. Interesting foods. Favourite was the duck marget and confit. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended. It is a little far from Bordeaux (30 ninutes) but it really pays off. The food is well presented and well decorated. The variety is goor and so the aperitifs. THe views and the natural light in a sunne day is stunning. A place to see and be seen, to enjoy a glass of champaign overviewing Bordeaux.

Yelp
The St James is an exceptional place... just 30 minutes from Bdx city center, you find yourself in a calm environment, with a spectacular view of Bdx. The pool is sort of hidden so that the people having lunch are not overlooking customers who are sunbathing. The restaurant is one of the best high end restaurants in Bordeaux. It's the perfect venue for a wedding celebration. The tables are beautifully laid, the service is impecable, the food is delicious...

Yelp
Fantastic! We went there for lunch and the service was outstanding. The lunch menu is perfectly sized and gives you a chance to continue your activities in the afternoon :) Bravo.
