Yelp
I enjoyed staying at this hotel. We booked a room from Friday - Monday. We arrived Friday afternoon, only to find out that my husband accidentally booked only from Saturday - Monday. Oops! No worries, the hotel had a room available, but it was on the street side. After the first night, he said he'd move all of our things to the other room for us on Saturday.
Our misstep is your gain, because I got to see both rooms! The difference between street view and ocean view is about R$100 per night. Spring for the ocean view. First off, the view is great! Look at the pictures I posted! For me, it would be worth it just for the view alone, and to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean... But if that isn't enough for you, both the bed AND shower are bigger in the ocean view room. We went from a full size bed to a king bed. That's a huge difference for us.
Everyone working at the hotel was professional and most employees spoke English. Marcelo did all of the communication in Portuguese, but I overheard many English speaking clients talking with the front desk staff.
There is an excellent restaurant located in the hotel, but I will review that more fully on the page for the restaurant.
Your room fee comes with free wifi as well as free breakfast. I wasn't really stoked on the breakfast (like, at all....) but everyone else seemed to like it just fine. Toast, juices, fruits... Eggs in a big metal tray sitting in their own juices... Oof, always grosses me out. But that's a me problem. My breakfasts were mostly just two slices of toast and a chamomile tea.
If you're interested in touring the Cristo or Pao de Acucar, take some extra time and plan the trips yourselves. Both places allow you to buy tickets in advance online. Then you can just take a taxi to the locations. I found that the tours were overpriced and didn't give us any time at the locations. We used the hotel to book us a trip to the Cristo, and the tour that they set us up with gave us only 30 minutes up there. It was extremely foggy, so much that we could barely even see the statue. And forget about the view. It was all just white. And there was nothing we could do about it. Because we were on the tour, we had to leave. Had we gone on our own, we could have went to the cafe, dried off a bit, eaten some lunch... Because 45 minutes later, all of the fog burned off. So again - don't use the hotel to book your tours. Use Yelp, Trip Advisor, Google... Do it yourself.
Also, don't use the hotel to call you taxis. REALLY. There is an AMAZING app that I've been using here in Brazil called 99 Taxis. You can call a taxi to wherever you are. Kind of like Uber / Lyft for you americans, but ... it's just taxis. Here's why you call your own taxis. They're cheaper. When we took a cab from the airport to our hotel, it ran us R$39. It was NOT a flat fee. It was just a regular metered drive. When we were checking out, I was sitting in a chair and my husband was handling everything in Portuguese. An English speaking man asked the front desk staff to call him a taxi for the airport. They told him it would be R$90. He asked why so much, and they said it's a flat fee between the airport and anywhere. He asked why then it only cost him R$40 to get to the hotel? Then they were clearly improving about the traffic, about peak travel times, etc. Nothing made sense. They called to see if they could "get him a deal", and said they could get him to the airport for R$70. A regular black car pulled up and took him away. I was a bit annoyed because I felt like the dude was definitely just taken advantage of. I texted my husband who then asked the same front desk staff for a taxi to take US to the airport, and they quoted him right away R$45. For the same car, same ride, half the price of what they quoted the English speaking guy.
Now, to an extent, that stuff happens in Brasil. And it happens in hotels. Hotels make deals with certain companies, and they get a cut. I get it. But I hated seeing it happen. If you want to save money, call your own taxis, and book your own tours. Don't use that service here at the hotel.
Otherwise, the room was comfortable and our stay extremely enjoyable. You can't beat the location of this hotel - directly on Ipanema beach. But why don't they have ice cream for room service?!
