The Best French Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Despite never changing its menu, “…I admire the fact that every morsel was delicious and every plate was soigné,” wrote critic Lesley Chesterman in Bonaparte’s 26th year of service, “proving that underneath all the elegance, Bonaparte is a well-oiled machine.” An Old Montreal institution, Bonaparte excels in its ambiance and its refined dishes including Provençal tartlets to French onion soup, mushroom fricassée and gamey terrines." - JP Karwacki

We recently stayed at Hotel Bonaparte and were very impressed with many aspects of our visit. Our room was beautifully appointed, and the bathroom was spotless — clearly very well maintained. The location is ideal, just steps away from the stunning Notre-Dame Basilica, which made exploring Old Montreal incredibly convenient. The staff were warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything we needed. However, we were quite disappointed with the breakfast experience. It’s delivered in a basket and left on a hook outside the room, which might seem charming, but unfortunately, the contents didn’t match the overall quality of the hotel. The basket included cold, industrially produced croissants (they seemed like they were from Costco), tiny jars of jam and butter, a sugary juice from concentrate, and a small portion of mixed nuts and dried fruits. This felt more like processed snack food than a proper or healthy breakfast. We ended up going out in the morning to find something more nourishing.

On my very first trip to Montreal I stayed at the Hotel Bonaparte for five nights. I absolutely love the hotel..My room was spacious and beautifully furnished. The bathroom was great including a rainforest shower. The staff were extremely nice and attentive, particularly Luke and Christina. My only slightly negative comment would be that the included breakfast was a basket of little foods to start your day..They hang the basket on a hook outside your door between 7-8 am..It includes a croissant or scone, some granola and juice. It's cute, but not really a breakfast, more of a tiny morning bite. I love big breakfasts when I travel, so I did go out for a nice breakfast a couple times instead of having the hotel's breakfast. A tiny gripe since most hotels at this price include a buffet breakfast and there is a restaurant at the Bonaparte hotel. Other than that I can't say enough to highly recommend the hotel. It's charming and in a perfect location in old Montreal. I would definitely stay there again!!!!

We had a wonderful extended stay at Hotel Bonaparte! The charm of the historic building, paired with the modern comforts of the room made for an unforgettable experience. The rooms were clean and housekeeping service was prompt. There was construction in the street at this time so it was a bit noisy for an hour one or two mornings. The next street perpendicular to the hotel had major construction being done so the street was reduced to two sidewalks on either side. One of the standout moments of our stay was the exceptional service by Luc, the restaurant manager. He was absolutely delightful! Warm, attentive, and genuinely pleasant to speak with. He went above and beyond to ensure we were well taken care of. For example, he noticed I added a lot of milk into my coffee and joked it could’ve been a latte and offered to steam it so it could be hot again. The location is tucked away enough to feel like a quiet escape and just steps away from the busy part of Old Montreal. I would recommend Hotel Bonaparte to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable stay in Old Montreal.

First of all we would like to mention Christina who unfailingly smiled at waved whenever she saw us. We asked where would be good places locally to eat and she gave us two excellent choices. Luc also provided excellent advice on what was happening and then provided us with concierge advice for our next stop, Quebec. |The room was reasonably large and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was large and the shower really powerful. |On the negative side was the ‘free’ breakfast in our room. We were looking forward to breakfast and not having to dress to attend a restaurant. Unfortunately the breakfast was a small snack. On day one the croissants could have been used for building blocks, the cereal was tiny and had to be eaten with a fork. Overall it was unpleasant on all four mornings and did not sustain us. |Finally the breakfast is delivered in a basket to a hook outside your room. On two occasions this did not happen. Also our room was not serviced on one occasion. When ringing to complain the questions were insinuating we were at fault. It should be accepted, as in this case, the guests were not.

One of the finest stays we have had at a hotel. Our contacts with reception (Valerie) and concierge (Luc) could not have been a more pleasant experience. Extremely helpful and absolutely committed to our comfort and interest in making our stay memorable. Hotel is centrally located in old Montreal with most sites within walking distance. Superior king room was well appointed and made for an excellent stay. |We seldom provide a review but the Bonaparte deserves the highest recommendation possible.

Google
Such a darling boutique hotel. Had a wonderful room with a balcony and the split into two rooms. Was awesome to have my daughter have her own room and bathroom. Staff is exceptional and helpful. Location is perfect. Ignore the street work. It didn’t impede our ability to get around at all. Very walkable location. Enjoyed visiting all the various shops and restaurants around. Must eat at the hotel once though. Food was incredible.

Google
This hotel was close to the train station, in a beautiful historic area, had amazing views from the rooms, and the service was wonderful. The concierge (Luc) and front of the house in the restaurant (host, manager, bartender) were absolutely lovely. I would stay again in a second. The breakfast basket delivered to the room was just okay, but honestly oh well. Lobby coffee was delicious.

Yelp
I stayed at the Hotel Bonaparte on my last day of a short trip to Quebec in April 2024. It would normally have been a bit too expensive for me, but I lucked into a decent price. I'd stayed in Old Montreal about eight years ago, and I wanted to return, even though I wouldn't have time to wander. While more quaint on the outside, the interior is very chic, and the rooms very modern. The lobby is smaller than I normally see in hotels. I was made welcome and asked to sit down at the desk, then asked if I'd like some champagne. I was pleased with the modern room and the large shower in the bathroom. Sadly, as with most hotel bathrooms, there is never enough counter space for all my "lady stuff". The room included a mini fridge and a coffee maker. I don't stay in a hotel if there isn't a coffee maker, since I dislike having to go out for my first cup of the day. (You certainly wouldn't want to SEE me if I did!) The windows open, which I seldom find in a hotel, and the view was very nice. Breakfast is delivered to your door in a little basket that attaches to a hook in the outer hallway. It was fine, but heavy on the carbs, with sugary juice, a croissant, sugary yogurt, a very sugary madeleine, and sugary jam. There might have been something else, but I cannot recall. I would return to this hotel.

Yelp
Hotel Bonaparte is a decent hotel in a great location. We arrived from the airport pretty early so our room wasn't ready yet but they took my number and called just a couple of hours later letting us know the room was ready early. The bed was comfortable, though a little small (felt very European) and the bathroom was nice. A few complaints - it was noisy! It's not their fault but there was lots of construction going on on the same street and at night we had drunk people yelling and revving car engines on the street just below us. Also we could not figure out how to lower the thermostat or increase the air flow. The windows opened which was nice but due to the aforementioned sound, we left them shut. Our stay also included breakfast but we checked out too early to take advantage of it so instead they packed up breakfast for us and delivered it at 5am which was so nice!

Yelp
Wonderful in all respects. Great location, friendly staff, free breakfast, comfortable and spacious rooms. My wife and I will definitely be back.

Yelp
I was spoiled! My fiancé m'a payé une fin-de-semaine en amoureux à l'Hotel! We had a wonderful time. A beautiful, big room with a king size bed, a window overlooking the Pointe-A-Callières museum, a waterfall shower big enough for two! Et que dire des soupers, "Josephine" et "Napoléon"... un bonheur gustative! Only the breakfasts were "ordinary", because of public health restrictions, a bag is delivered to your room.. but excellent lattes! Si vous cherchez un endroit romantique pour un "staycation", près de tous les beaux sites du Vieux-Montréal, try l"Hotel Bonaparte". Encourage local businesses!

Yelp
This is a lovely old world French hotel. High ceilings, exposed brick, gleaming hardwood floors. HUGE windows. Comfy beds & linens. The bathroom is generous with both a soaking tub and shower. Two sinks, one outside the bathroom-nice extra. It is very quite while being centrally located. About a 8-15 minute walk to McGill Street. Viex Port, Viex Montreal, Place d'Armes, Notre-Dame Basilica, Montreal Science Centre and more. The staff is friendly and helpful. A full breakfast is included-you chose 3 courses off a menu including-fresh fruit juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fresh fruit salad (great & freshly made with mango, pineapple, grapes, apples, etc), yogurt (would have been MUCH better if poured out of the carton), fresh bread, muffins and croissants (but of course!). The main dish was crepes, French toast, eggs with sausage and bacon or a choice of several omelets. Everything was very nice. Dinner is served here as well and looks delicious (too fancy for our kid sadly plus we wanted to explore outside the hotel but definitely a convenient option). The photos online are exactly what you get-good to know. Parking is off site (a block & a half away on the same street in an open lot. Looks a bit sketchy but we have not had any issues during our stays () We have stayed at Hotel Bonaparte several times and it is THE ONLY place we will stay in Montreal.

Yelp
Thanks for all of the reviews that helped us choose this fantastic hotel. The staff is fantastic including Luke, the Golden Key Hotel Concierge. His advice and knowledge of the city made this visit spectacular The location of the hotel is perfect, walking distance to everything in Old Montreal. The room is perfect and we definitely recommend requesting a room that faces the courtyard. Breakfast is free and fantastic, particularly the coffee and Canadian maple syrup on crepes. Definitely explore old port in the evening and see the movies playing on the buildings. How great is this hotel ? We are returning in three days. That says it all.

Yelp
We spent 5 days at this hotel in October. The location in Old City is just perfect. Easy walking access to numerous bistros, restaurants, the river, museums. The service was absolutely the best. Everyone was kind and helpful. The morning breakfast was so enjoyable. The room was small but very comfortable bed, good bathroom, Keurig, very clean. The hotel restaurant was truly wonderful. We had the 6 course tasting menu. A true culinary experience.

Yelp
Just arrived and unpacked, so review based on the last hour. I just screwed up an Expedia reservation for two days starting tonight. I came into the small but tasteful lobby and waited for the attendant. I smiled, gave him my name, and told him that I had a reservation with Hotwire. He checked his computer and said he couldn't find it: had I used another name? No, I just made it an hour ago. He continued to look. I went back to my car (no valet, by the way, but a well lit lot very close by) and got my phone, pulled up the email, and showed the attendant. He politely told me that my confirm was from Expedia, and maybe that was why he couldn't find it. Oh: that and it wasn't until tomorrow. I apologized and was contrite. He found a room for two days for me, all good. I paid for the extra day, got the papers signed, and parked my car. Came back to my wife sitting in the hotel lobby with a glass of champagne. I slipped the attendant a tenner for his help. We got the second glass and went to our premium kit room. 15 minutes later, now a knock on the doors. It was the attendant: he had Expedia changing the reservation on the call. Worked out well Front, street side room. Cobbled roads as streets. Loud even from the four floor, By midnight the noise abates (bring earplugs anyway) and lovely silence.

Yelp
I cannot stress enough how much I loved this hotel! Do I start with the glass of champagne at check in or the beautifully appointed room with the heavenly firm bed? On top of all that a delicious free breakfast with delightful service. If that isn't enough it's in Old Town so the setting is also perfect! A must stay in Montreal!

Mary D.

Yelp
Best hotel ever. From ambience to staff to continental breakfast and location- all top shelf. A little nervous about managing in French? This hotel smoothes away that fear with experienced and kind assistance. Rooms are well designed, clean and cozy after a cold day in the old city. The views inside and out are museum worthy. Continental breakfast included with your room is like none other. Delicious. Extensive and elegant in its presentation. Can't wait to return and share with friends.

Yelp
What an amazing hotel experience!! Nestled in Old Montréal. Views of Notre Dame. Walking easy to all that is exciting. Staff is absolutely delightful, knowledgeable about anything you can ask, full of personality. Restaurant and bar top notch. Try the Sazarac. Rooms are comfy and nicely appointed. Go!

Yelp
Samuel and Helen, our concierges were fabulous!!!! The hotel was lovely, spotless, friendly, and the breakfast was yummy! My friend Deborah and I can't wait to tell our friends and return soon. Thank you

Yelp
A lovely hotel, well situated in old Montreal. Rooms were spacious with comfortable furniture (including a great bed). The only downside was the shower pressure was not strong, it worked but I have had better. Breakfast is included in the price, and there is a good selection of options. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

Andrew M.

Yelp
Had lunch and two dinners here and it was consistently excellent in every way. Did both table d'hote and chef's tasting menu, so sampled much of the menu, and everything was just great! Staff was attentive, helpful and friendly throughout. Don't miss it if you are in Montreal!
