Hotel Covell | Bon Appétit

"GO: for a styled-out escape from the L.A. scene, via Hotel Covell, a charming boutique hotel with one of the city’s best wine bars tucked downstairs. THE VIBE IS: California chill. Each of the nine rooms has a no-frills, boho feel, with big windows covered by white, flowy curtains and pops of color throughout (a gold dresser, blue headboard). There’s likely a Crosley record player in your room and Malin+Goetz soaps in the bathroom, making you feel more at home than in a hotel. But the best thing in the hotel is Bar Covell, the thimble-sized wine bar downstairs run by sommelier Matthew Kaner. PRACTICAL STUFF: Rooms start at $295. Since the hotel has a very limited amount of rooms, it’s best to book out as far ahead as you can. —Elyse Inamine" - Condé Nast

Our first stay at this gorgeous boutique hotel in the heart of cool Los Feliz. Beautifully decorated and furnished room with epic bed and huge bathroom. Petite rooftop terrace. Above Bar Covell, renowned for it's extensive collection of old and new world wines. Plenty of places to eat and drink nearby (we loved the bagel place opposite). As it's right in the heart of things, one must expect some noise but this was minimal in our room, Chapter 5,which was noted to be the quietest.

Great location, visited LA for a few days on a long layover on our way back to NZ from Europe. Good location, wine bar downstairs is great, lots of food options in walking distance and the rest of Silverlake is a 20ish minute walk or very quick drive. Walking distance to Barnsdall Art Park which has a great view of the Hollywood sign and surrounding hills as well as a few sights to see up there. Service was good, there is a bit of a walk to the check in office from the road and some stairs to the rooms but pick up and drop off for Uber/taxi is super easy. Our room was well appointed and shower pressure was great. Appreciated the Le Labo amenities and the quality of the in room coffee (chemex). Would stay here again when visiting LA.

This is a cool hotel in a hip and fun part of the city. It has a very European vibe and with that vibe comes the things that make funky hotels in Europe (and anywhere) not exactly the most quiet places to stay. If you are under 30 and can sleep through anything- you won't be bothered at all. However, there is a bar downstairs, a coffee shop, a taco bar (really great food by the way) and a lot of street activity/outdoor dining going on. The wine bar closes at midnight but people were outside mingling and talking (loudly) until well past 2am. And then at 6:30am the staff of the coffee shop starts arriving and making noise. The windows are not soundproofed so you can hear every car that drives by. The rooftop area in back can be used for private parties- which happened while we were there as well. So we basically got no sleep. The amenities are nice- a fridge, pour over Chemex coffee maker, lots of space to spread out, large bathroom. The area has great food and shopping and is easy access to a few Los Angeles spots (Griffith Observatory for ex). I would suggest a room that isn't on the street and inquire about private events on the patio if you are in the rooms that face the parking lot. The staff are incredibly helpful and gracious and it was easy to get anything we needed. A fun place to stay if you are not a light sleeper or just enjoy the buzz of the city!

We stayed here for a night. Helpful instructions txt’d before check in for free car parking. Room (5) was spotless and spacious and quiet. Very comfortable bed. Great coffee shop next door for breakfast and quite a few good dinner options within walking distance.

This hotel was such a surprise! We loved it. Comfortable and quirky. We were happy every time we returned to our suite (Chapter 1). The staff were charming and helpful. Free parking included, not to be taken for granted. This was our favorite hotel to wind up a 6-week trip across the U.S.

Google
This small, boutique hotel deserves every 5 star rating that it has! Check in was fantastic. I got a text the day prior to our arrival confirming details and providing check in instructions. The metro stops just a few blocks away, so it's easy to walk to if you don't want to bring a car (which there is free parking for as well). We booked the chapter 2 room, which I was worried might be kind of small and dark, but the room itself looked even better than the pictures and was very spacious and very light. The bed was very comfortable with a selection of pillows. The in room amenities were great, with a pour over coffee maker and delicious coffee and tea, really nice Le Labo toiletries, plates, utensils, bowls, cups and wine glasses at the mini bar and even a bottle of Dr. Bronner's to wash up with. There was also a record player with records which was fun and this old timey game which was also unique and fun. The location was great with being able to walk to the Covell Bar, tacos, sushi, Brazilian, coffee, pretty much any kind of food that you'd want. It was also a good workout to walk up the hill to the Griffith Observatory. Also amazing, no added resort fee. It's definitely out of the way and non-conspicuous, but if that's what you're looking for, this is an amazing hotel!

Google
Hotel Covell is gorgeous, clean, perfectly located and has the friendliest staff. We were walkable to restaurants and public transport like the Metro and buses, perfect for us as we had plans at Dodger Stadium, Universal Studios, and Griffith Observatory. The tacos next door are so convenient and delicious (we also tried their cookies which were great). The staff was responsive, accommodating, and pleasant. Sooo glad we chose to stay here!

Google
Noise level was intolerable. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but I didn't see this covered by others. We were told our room (number 6) was "one of the quieter ones" but that the hotel was next door to a preschool that starts up at 9am. We took that to mean a few screaming children after 9 and it didn't worry us. In reality, the preschool started promptly at 8am every day with children's music so loud that the bass shook our room. The rest of the place was already questionable value for money, but the noise should keep anyone away.

Yelp
We stayed in "Chapter 6" at Hotel Covell for a concert at the Greek Theater, and it was absolutely perfect! I love boutique hotels, and this one exceeded my expectations. The front desk was super helpful when we called to confirm where to park, making check-in a breeze. The room itself was charming, with thoughtful amenities that added a special touch. It felt like a little home away from home. After having sushi downstairs we took an uber to the concert but we were able to walk back and avoid the concert traffic. Even being close to the action, the room was quieter than we expected, letting us unwind peacefully. Before heading out the next day, we grabbed brunch at HomeState--delicious and just a short walk away. Hotel Covell has the perfect mix of style, convenience, and comfort. Highly recommend it for a Greek Theater night or any LA getaway!

Yelp
I wish for a Hotel Covell in every town we ever visit. If so, I'd spend less time on travel sites looking for the elusive sweet spot where the price of a hotel seems fair for what is being advertised. This hotel is a bit under the radar and I only found it based on a random magazine article I read on boutique hotels in LA. After our most recent stay, I'm confident this hotel will always be at the top of list! First, the guest experience is well designed. They communicated in a timely and friendly way before our arrival about parking and the check-in process. (One amazing perk is free self-parking spot just steps away from back entrance, which means you can zip around town without the hassle of Los Feliz parking hunts). Second, the room is lovely. We stayed in Chapter 3. The bedding is similar to a quality you'd have at home -- no cheap scratchy sheets here! They use La Labo bath products in the bathroom and have a chemex/fellows set up with ground coffee at-the-ready. It is a hotel experience in a room that feels like the perfect apartment I always wanted. And finally, the location. For years, I stayed at larger chain hotels (e.g., Ace, Westin) in DTLA or smaller boutique hotels in Ktown. They felt like the only option in the 250-$350 per night range. While this place is a touch higher in price, the location (and free parking... don't forget hotels in LA charge -$40 for parking, before tip) is unique and worthwhile if it works for your budget. It's tucked into a discreet spot next to a coffee shop and wine bar, next door to Kismet (which I also rave-reviewed, 5 stars!), and walking distance from tons of stuff. Street side the entrance is totally unnoticeable, and you can go about your day without hotel-y things like lobbies full of people with screaming children and weird boomers staring at your tattoos in the elevator (no elevator). Overall, a totally enjoyable experience. My only tension for next time is whether to book chapter 3 again or to try other chapters!!

Yelp
I love this place! I recently stayed in the Chapter 1 room for a few days to focus on a writing project and it was perfect! The staff is lovely, the decor is charming and totally unique (it has a working record player) and it's close to MANY places to eat/grab coffee. I'd go back in a second!

Yelp
This boutique hotel is everything. If you're one who likes to wander a bit off the beaten path try out this little oasis. Thoughtfully outfitted, apartment-style hotel rooms (called chapters) were the perfect way to spend our get away in Los Angeles. A beautiful rooftop, open air covid friendly check-ins, and fun taco, coffee and sushi spot below the rooms made this hotel convenient and the perfect spot! A little loud in the early mornings and nights due to the crowd below would be the only complaint I have. Would be a pleasure to stay again!

Yelp
Beautiful stay here for my birthday! The room (chapter 7) was thoughtfully curated, clean, and comfortable. The private deck was a wonderful space to soak up the morning sunshine and coffee. Insanely comfortable bed with parachute bedding and linens. The staff was extremely accommodating- sourcing a microwave for our room, a vase for some flowers and random things as needed. And also provided a bottle of wine for my birthday. There is parking in the back alley, which is tight, but an appreciated amenity in LA. Would definitely come back to experience a different chapter room when we're back in the area.

Yelp
Wow! Where to begin... Hotel Covell has very much become a home away from home. Sarah, Val, literally everyone is so nice and helpful. I don't know if I'll ever stay anywhere else when I'm in LA! What to expect: Clean and trendy rooms Parking in the back Beyond nice staff (even when I'm stressed and kind of short (sorry when I'm like that!) they are so kind to me!) Great tater tots from the bar! Easy checkin Easy check out Great communication

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at this establishment while attending the Deftones at the Greek Theatre. Staff was friendly and courteous. The location is perfect very close to the Greek Theatre. If you're not into large crowds this is the place to be. Very relaxing. Nice and clean. The only negatives I could think of is the stairs. If you have problems with your knees the stairs are very old and narrow. Climbing up the cement stairs as they waved through the air was a bit scary the incline is quite drastic. Safer to walk up inside stairwell. Overall everything else was great. Especially the record albums!

Yelp
It is a nice low key hotel located by multiple LA destinations/freeways. The staff was very accommodating and made it so that I never had to wait or be bothered. They were attentive and reached out to me hours before I arrived to inform me that my room was ready along with parking instructions/directions. That's nice because it's one less thing to worry about. I like that it's located in a neighborhood and away from all the Hollywood tourist spots. If you're trying to meditate or some $H1T don't stay here because it is a busy area. For me it was fine. I liked how we were on a busy strip but still felt secluded enough. Another bonus was a cafe, bar and a Tex/Mex restaurant below. I'll definitely come back if I need to stay in the Hollywood area again.

Yelp
I want to keep it a secret bc it's so good. We plan on staying here any time we are in la. It's spacious and was great traveling with a one year old. Location is central and we felt like we were in the mix even just chilling in the room. Amazing design and all the big names. Lots of character and charm. Also Hailey made us feel so welcome. We loved the record player too! It felt extremely private. Also huge bonus to have a coffee shop, tacos and wine bar below us. What more could one ask for? Loved this place.

Yelp
This was such a cool experience! The hotel is made up of 8 Chapters, studio-sized rooms, which were arranged and furnished with every detail in mind. Besides for the the cute, well-stocked kitchenette and the bathroom decked out with Le Labo toiletries, our suite had a record player and an array of records to listen to. And let's not forget the personalized welcome note and bottle of wine that greeted us upon our arrival. Parking was included with our stay and was right out back. Our only complaint was the noise in the morning coming from the coffee shop below. Otherwise we would love to come back and check out another chapter!

Yelp
300 reviews! Let's get fancy about it. Stayed at Hotel Covell for three nights during my last trip to LA and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. The folks behind Covell have thought of absolutely everything--we felt completely spoiled the whole time we were there. This is very much a boutique situation and there are only five or six rooms, which they refer to as "stories." Each story has its own theme--we were in story #1 which was said to have a Midwest vibe. I'm from the Midwest and have to say this is a gussied up version of that part of the world, although I guess I can see where they're coming from. I loved so many things about this place, so I thought I'd break down my favorite aspects for ya below! + The rooms themselves are like studio apartments--honestly, they're probably bigger than the studio I had in LA. They come equipped with a kitchenette, California King bed, a darling sitting area, and a luxurious shower (no bathtub in our room). + This ain't your average mini bar! Covell gives you a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival and has a fully stocked snack area and fridge if you should get the munchies. Local jerky, chocolate chip cookies, and cold brew were some of our faves. + There's a lovely patio landing outside of the rooms for reading the paper in the morning or unwinding with a glass of wine at night. + Bar Covell downstairs is a total gem. Head down there to hang with cool people (some locals told us it was their neighborhood hang) or take a glass of jammy red up to your room. I would also suggest Go Get Em Tiger for morning coffee and pastries? + They provide a turn table and records, just for vibes. Would 100 million percent come back for a stay at Hotel Covell! Perfect for a little getaway, staycation (having someone make your bed, even in your own city, is pretty rad), or business travel.

Yelp
THE COOLEST! At the adorable front desk, Zoya, literally had me at hello. I was dehydrated, tired, had just got off the plane, and her sunshine goodness lifted me up, as she held my bag, and directed me to the nearby cafes where I could hydrate and become a person again. I took like 10,000 pictures of my room because I plan to shape the decor of my house completely around this hotel. It is an impossibly cool, stylish, boho, european but also New York, artistic amalgam of badassery. Everything about my stay was first rate and I will 1,000% be back for my next momcation.

Yelp
Needing an air conditioned, central meeting place, to crash in LA was why we booked a night in Suite 9 at Hotel Covell. What we did not expect was the cool vibe and inviting spirit of the people and place!! The room was as comfortable as home, with a firm bed, games and records to play and a complimentary bottle inviting us to enjoy. I am so glad we checked in early to really relax and share the location with a local couple in true happy hour fashion. I had visited the Covell bar below many times before, but completely endulged in their food for room service. Suite 8 and 9 are separate apartments just above an ice cream and coffee establishment and are quite calm considering that THIS IS LA and the Los Feliz district. The Vista Theater, Rockwell, Soap Plant Factory, and alike are so close! Might consider it for a stay if going to the Greek Theater via Uber/Lyft. We can't wait to stay at the best boutique hotel we have ever had the pleasure to experience, again!!

Yelp
Such a unique gem within LA. We love staying whenever we are in town, it's beautiful, comfortable, and spacious. The wine was a great addition, too.

Yelp
Stayed for a week and felt like it was my home away from home. Love everything about this boutique hotel gem. It's got cool decor, fun snacks, complimentary bottle of their own label, and lots of great eating places close by. Would definitely return and make this my base for my next visit to LA.

Yelp
I'd be remiss if I didn't pass along a hotel recommendation from our recent stay in Los Angeles. Hotel Covell, in the Los Feliz section of L.A. is a 9 suite boutique hotel with a cool apartment building vibe. The units are all different, and they sit over a great coffee shop, Ice cream store and Bar Covell, a popular wine bar that serves around 150 wines by the glass, and a light menu. You're within walking distance to cool shops, bars and restaurants, and who knows, you might see a celebrity or two staying there or just out and about. Convenient free parking in the back avoids the usual big hotel up charge and valet costs. I'd say the price is reasonable compared to other decent L.A. hotels. The staff is very friendly and accommodating too. We picked it for its proximity to where our daughter lives, but whatever your plans in La La Land, check out Hotel Covell.
google avatar

Cara B.

Yelp
The decor is BEAUTIFUL and all the personal / finishing touches of the space are just fantastic. They even left a complimentary bottle of wine from downstairs. My only complaint (and it's kind of a big one) is the noise. Do remember that you are above a bar... and you WILL hear it. Also, the walls are PAPER THIN. The guests next door were up at 6am and I could hear EVERY. WORD. (Therefore I was up at 6am too). If noise doesn't bother you, then it's a lovely hotel and the location is great.

Alexis S.

Yelp
We had an incredible stay at Hotel Covell. Our room, Chapter 8, was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and very clean. The staff is kind & accommodating. There's even a cute outdoor patio! We had to extend our stay a couple times and Sarah, at the front desk, always worked her magic and made it work. Finally, the location couldn't be better! It's right in the heart of Los Feliz and there are so many great spots within walking distance.

Yelp
unique, amazing hotel. very comfortable, felt like a home away from home. everything was super comfy. the bathroom had a walk through shower with a huge clawfoot tub, so beautiful. yummy soap, shampoo & conditioner. super private and exclusive. most favorite hotel experience i've ever had. we loved our stay so much, thank you guys!

Yelp
This place is magnificent. Every room is perfectly appointed & no detail has been left to chance. I checked in after 26 hours of travel & instantly felt at home in my suite. The low key atmosphere and adjoining wine bar/restaurant take things to another level. It's definitely worth your time, and your dime, to stay here on your next LA adventure.

Yelp
We stayed one night in their 2 bedroom suite. The place was so beautifully designed. We wished we had stayed longer! We were greeted with a bottle of wine upon checkin, and everything about the service while we were there was perfect.

Ashley M.

Yelp
This place is a gem in Los Angeles, I loved everything about Hotel Covell. The vibe was awesome, the staff was so sweet and attentive, the wine is amazing and the location of the hotel could not be in a better location. We were able to walk back from Cliffs Edge restaurant and hit up a few bars on the way back. I have to highly compliment Maddie and Kevin, Kevin was there upon my arrival and he was a pleasure to check in with, Maddie was just a delight, so sweet and friendly. I would definitely stay here a thousand more times when I am back in the area which I hope is soon!!!!!!
