Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"At Hotel Cycle, you don’t even have to step off your pedals — you can ride right into this cavernous space, which includes not just the hotel but a restaurant, a bar, a café, a bakery, a Giant bike shop, and much more. The building’s interior retains the warehouse atmosphere of its waterfront surroundings, but the rooms temper their industrial origins with organic warmth — and hooks for hanging up your bike." - Mark Fedeli

Hotel Cycle (Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture) 3 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Only in Japan could a themed hotel so over-the-top come out feeling just right. In a place as jaded as New York or London the Hotel Cycle would land with a thud. But in Japan there’s nothing cool about cynicism — here cool means total dedication and total commitment. And Hotel Cycle is nothing if not committed to its theme." - Tablet Hotels

One of the most unique and special hotels I've ever stayed at. They have a cozy, chill vibe from the food to the views and the music to the building/architecture. Laundry services were super helpful. The bike theme is pulled off effortlessly. The food options and menu are all healthy and carefully selected. The breakfast that was included in the stay is amazing value. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Absolutely loved this hotel. We stayed here the night before embarking on the Shimanami Kaido and were super impressed. The hotel is walking distance from the station and from the port bicycle rental terminal. Unfortunately, dinner was fully booked when we arrived, but the hotel provided us with plates to eat our Lawson's dinner on since we were too exhausted from travel to go out. We did have breakfast at the restaurant the next day and it was great! Beds were super comfortable, and the bathroom was amazing!! 10/10 recommend.

While I wasn’t expecting a luxury four-star hotel in this area, paying ¥25,300 per night should come with a certain standard — and sadly, this stay fell short. The property had an unclean feel and a strong, musty, moldy odor the moment I entered. I stayed in Room 208, and I’d strongly suggest avoiding it if possible. The room was dated, worn, and nowhere near worth the rate charged.||Sleeping in past 7:00 AM was impossible due to the poor sound insulation. Footsteps and children running in the hallways, conversations from other guests, and even noise from outside carried straight into the room.||Check-in set the tone for the stay — the staff member, a man in his mid-50s, seemed entirely uninterested. His greeting was limited to a stiff, insincere smile before handing me the keys, leaving me with the impression that my presence was a nuisance.||On the positive side, the morning staff were excellent, and the café team was warm and welcoming. That said, if I had the chance to choose again, I’d stay elsewhere.||For context, during the same trip I stayed at voco Osaka for 4 nights, C&C Hotel in Okayama for 1 night, and Notel in Santo Island for Shodoshima — all of which I would highly recommend. Unfortunately, Cycle Hotel was the only letdown.

Good location in a stylishly renovated old warehouse complex. The rooms a not great, as they are smallish and dark with no windows. Common areas and the restaurant are nice, very good breakfast.

I did not expect a four-star hotel in this area, but for the price I paid (¥25,300 per night), I expected a bit better quality. Unfortunately, the property felt dirty and had a strong, moldy smell from the moment I walked in. I stayed in Room 208 — avoid if you can! The room was old, worn out, and far from worth the price. Don’t expect to sleep past 7:00 AM — the soundproofing is terrible. You can hear kids running around, people talking in the hallway, and even noise from outside the hotel. The check-in experience was equally underwhelming. The staff member, a man in his 55s, was not welcoming at all — giving a forced, insincere smile and simply handing me the keys make me feel like a burden to him. However, the morning staff was great, and the people working in the café area were friendly and welcoming. Still, if I could choose again, I would stay somewhere else. For comparison, I stayed at voco Osaka for 4 nights, C&C Hotel in Okayama for 1 night, and Notel in Santo Island for Shodoshima — all of which I highly recommend. Unfortunately, Cycle Hotel was the only disappointment.

I stayed at Hotel Cycle part of the Onomichi U2 complex in May 2025 at the start of my journey of the Shimanami kaido cycle trail.|The hotel is situated very near the JR station no more than a 10 minute walk away from the station and along the waterfront and a walkable distance from the covered shopping street and temple walk.|The check-in was efficient and the rooms are modern, clean and tastefully decorated. The bathroom is huge, great water pressure from the shower.|They provide you with lovely denim pjs which are really comfy but quite thick so might be a bit too warm in summer.|One tip I would give is that you might want to try and book a room on the second floor. We were on a bottom floor room which I think was directly below the corridor that people walk across to get to their rooms on the second floor so we could hear the constant sound of footsteps above us which was a bit annoying.|As others have mentioned, the complex also has a bakery (nice), shop - nice product but pretty eye watering prices (T-shirt - NZD $100, Jeans- over $300, a cap? $100), didn’t try the restaurant except for breakfast. I didn’t check the price but ended up paying around $NZD $30. If you do eat the breakfast and willing to pay that price you better make it worth your while and eat heaps! I suggest grabbing a sandwich or onigiri ball at the nearby Lawsons.|A pleasant stay and a good location.|The rate is not cheap ( we decided to treat ourselves and stay here) but the standard is good.|If you shop around there are other cheaper options to stay at in Onomichi.

The service in this hotel was exquisite. Lovely staff who helped us with everything - from renting bikes to arranging a taxi. The hotel is situated in a lively building with souvenir shops, a bakery and a bike rental - yet the rooms feel secluded and private. The room was a bit dark, but we didn’t mind because we were pretty knackered after cycling out in the sun the whole day. ☺️ Thank you!

Booked in this hotel for my Shimanami Kaido bike ride. The exterior and interiors of this hotel are so beautiful, and in the U2 Warehouse there are a lot of stores showcasing local Onomichi products, cafes/restaurants, and a Giant/Liv bike store. It’s also super near the train station and the port for where you ride a ferry prior to your Shimanami Kaido bike ride.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here primarily for convenience because we wanted to bike the Shimanami Kaido, and since we were going to rent bikes from the Giant store attached to the hotel, staying at Hotel Cycle would allow us to pick up the bikes the night before the ride and get an early start on the ride. We also liked that there were bike racks in the hotel common area as well as wall racks in the rooms. The staff were very helpful and spoke very good English. They were able to print out a map and help me understand how to use public transportation to get back from Imabari (the end of my bike route). The room was one of the bigger ones I've seen in Japan, but still not super spacious by American standards. The bathroom was quite modern, and the tub was WONDERFUL after a day of cycling. They only had options for 2 single beds, rather than 1 double/queen bed, which would have been preferable for my husband and me. Also, the hotel charges for occupancy, so 2 people cost twice as much as 1 person, even for the same room size. This was the primary negative for me, and it caused the stay to be quite pricey. Other perks: free secured wifi. Free welcome drink ticket that you can use at the Kog Bar inside the Onomichi U2 building.
