La Vieille Fontaine

"Wood panelling, mouldings, tapestries and a fireplace set the elegant Provençal scene of this venerable establishment. Pascal Auger is in his element, crafting Mediterranean fare steeped in the aromas and flavours of the south. On sunny days (you’re in Avignon!) you can enjoy these delicacies beneath the ancient plane tree on the terrace facing a fountain." - Michelin Inspector

This hotel was built in the 1600s and has a beautiful, welcoming courtyard and offered us excellent service at the front desk and from the valets. We had a superior room, which opened to a quaint courtyard and balcony with seating area. At night we had drinks in the common area but didn’t not try any of the food options. Air conditioning was superb and provided a respite from the warm Provençal sun. My only criticism was that the room was a tiny bit shabby and would benefit from a refurbishing.

Lovely hotel inside the walls and convenient to everything. Our room was large. The service was excellent. The hotel is old and oozes character and charm The breakfast was very good with plenty of choices. We would definitely stay here again!

My wife and I stayed here for our anniversary,. It's right off the TGV in Avignon we stopped as we were heading south, we stayed one night and it was very romantic, very beautiful. The town is a gem and the hotel is as quaint and beautiful as you can imagine..

Hôtel de Luxe 5 étoiles?||We stayed at Hotel D'Europe from April 20 to 23. |The hotel amenities, buildings, rooms, art, and atmosphere are wonderful. |Very clean. |It's like a trip in time to a luxurious hospitality from the 1920s. |The restaurant is top of the charts: the staff, food and wine are worth the experience.||The regular hotel staff was great, helpful, and friendly. ||The manager, while being nice and friendly, made the weirdest managaerial decision I can remember witnessing as a traveler:||We lost the room key by mistake while visiting one of the nearby villages. We looked it up and learned that the key is of traditional unique french kind, and it costs 136 EUR to get a replica made and shipped by mail.||We were told by the receptionists to expect a fee of 100 to 150 EUR and that the manager will update us with the fee we are expected to pay.| |We suggested to the receptionists to split it - we understand our responsibility, but we assume that if one breaks the mirror by mistake in a luxury 5-star hotel, the hotel will take care of it, so a split of the key cost is a good solution.||When we checked out, we were happy to find that at the end, they did not charge us for the key at all. Nor the receptionists or the manager mentioned it.||We've continued our trip to discover a day later that the hotel charged our credit 150 EUR for the key.||No call, no email, no discussion. |We find this behavior bizarre and embarrassing and not at all fitting a 5-star French luxury hotel in Provence. ||Unfortunately, this changed our 5 star review to a 1 star review as it's totally unacceptable as we see it.

Disappointing Experience Despite a Charming Setting We stayed at Hotel Europe in Avignon for one night, from April 30th to May 1st. The hotel itself has undeniable charm—an elegant, old-style luxury with a lot of character. Our room was particularly spacious and included a cute little balcony. The location is also excellent: perfectly situated to explore Avignon on foot. However, our overall experience was unfortunately marred by a serious lack of consideration for guests’ comfort. We paid around €460 for the night, expecting a restful and high-end stay. Instead, on the morning of May 1st— a public holiday—we were woken up at 9 a.m. (possibly even earlier) by what can only be described as construction-site noise: loud banging, metal being cut, and heavy machinery sounds. When I opened the window, I could see that the noise was coming from some sort of renovation or construction work within the hotel itself. We eventually got up and decided to check out earlier than planned. During check-out, the receptionist politely asked how our stay had been, and I responded honestly, expressing that it was unacceptable to disturb guests with such intense noise at that hour, especially on a holiday morning. Her response was quite dismissive—she mentioned they were “installing mirrors or something like that”—and proceeded to charge me an additional €26.60 for the use of the parking without acknowledging the inconvenience we experienced. Let me be clear: this complaint is not about the money. It’s about manners and respect for the guest. When a customer points out that their sleep was disturbed by noise caused by the hotel itself, and particularly when that customer is staying at a so-called 5-star property and paying close to €500 per night, the very least you would expect is a gesture of goodwill. Waiving the parking fee or offering a token of apology would have been appropriate and professional. We chose this hotel hoping for a restful and luxurious experience. Instead, I left feeling disappointed and unrested. It’s a pity because the hotel really does have potential. But service matters just as much as style—and this was not the service one should expect from a 5-star establishment.

Just inside the city walls adjacent to the Rhone, it's a lovely hotel. Beautiful courtyard. Great local wines. Easy to walk into old city center.

A lovely hotel situated in the old town in Avignon. Lots of charm. We stayed in the smallest room offered, but it was large enough for the two of us. All of the staff were very helpful. After a full day of walking around Avignon, we had a quiet dinner at the bar. The meal became a highlight of our trip. Breakfast was well prepared and presented. We had a car on the trip, and the hotel handled the parking, a real plus. We would definitely stay at|Hotel d’Europe if our travels brought us to Avignon.

Yelp
Absolutely charming and sophisticated hotel opened in... 1799! White table cloth breakfast (included for us). Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Great location . Walking distance to cute art galleries and shops. Minutes to the train station by taxi/uber. Do not miss the BEAUTIFUL shop, Madame de Crillion! Gifts and housewares that are reasonably priced relative to the other shops in the area. But there is no door from the street.

Yelp
This little boutique classic French hotel is conveniently located about 15 minutes walk from the train station. With its beautiful courtyard, country style Southern French style decor with a modern bathroom, it was within walking distance to the museums, restaurants, shopping, & pretty much every where. It's an off season that the hotel staff upgrades to a suite with a balcony. Friendly staff, nice cocktails in the bar, quiet, comfortable beds ... it was just nice. It would have been a 5 stars if they had provided the water everyday & the coffee machine worked better ; otherwise, it would be a great choice as compared with other modern hotel to experience a Southern French way. Recommend.

Yelp
Cool courtyard, friendly staff, food is great. I loved the location. Nestled in between historic attractions and great restaurants, I really enjoyed staying here. Definitely will go back.

Yelp
What a gem! The location is fantastic right at the entrance to the old city of Avignon so if you have a car you pull right into their driveway and within seconds they park your car which is a BIG convenience. The hotel staff is very attentive and helpful and the courtyard is filled with flowers and tables which is so pleasant. The rooms were well appointed, and quite charming. I would definitely stay here again if I have the opportunity.
