La Vieille Fontaine

"Wood panelling, mouldings, tapestries and a fireplace set the elegant Provençal scene of this venerable establishment. Pascal Auger is in his element, crafting Mediterranean fare steeped in the aromas and flavours of the south. On sunny days (you’re in Avignon!) you can enjoy these delicacies beneath the ancient plane tree on the terrace facing a fountain." - Michelin Inspector

Hotel d'Europe | Best places to stay in Provence

"This sumptuous townhouse (built 1580) in the heart of medieval Avignon became a hotel in 1799 – when it was baptised Hotel d’Europe by none other than Napoleon Bonaparte, a friend of the owner and the first in a long line of famous guests. The magnificent courtyard, with its 300-year-old plane tree, is a peaceful spot; and it’s in a convenient location in the heart of the old town. The Junior Suites have views over the city of Avignon; the Suites overlook the Palais des Papes. The hotel’s much-travelled chef, Bruno d’Angélis, has earned a Michelin star for his Mediterranean cuisine with a fresh exotic touch at La Vieille Fontaine; his winter truffle menu is especially fabulous. Infused with period elegance and run by a staff with old-world courtesy and class, it’s a dream for history lovers and first-time visitors to Avignon. " - Dana Facaros

At Hotel d’Europe, you quickly realize the hype is absolutely deserved. The restaurant delivers an upscale yet approachable dining experience, where refinement never overshadows warmth. The atmosphere is elegant and historic, but never stiff — it feels like the perfect setting for a special meal that’s still inviting and comfortable. The cooking is precise and thoughtful, with dishes that showcase both creativity and classic technique. Service matches the setting: attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming. In short, it’s a place where everything comes together seamlessly — food, ambiance, and hospitality — making for a meal that feels truly memorable.

Absolutely perfect 🤩 A place with a fabulous history (Napoleon, Hugo, Hemingway, Piaf…) and heritage a few steps away from the Popes Castle of Avignon. The gastronomic restaurant is a must go to enjoy one of the most refined cuisine in town!! The private and quiet courtyard under the trees is a true gift in the heart of summer, charmed by the delicate sound of the fountain. Some well deserved refreshing peace amid the heat of town…

Lovely little hotel inside the city walls. The area is full of charm and history. The staff are very warm and friendly. We didn’t dine here, however we did enjoy some cocktails on the patio in the courtyard. The bar prices were equivalent and affordable. We would definitely stay again.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights at this hotel. The hotel is quaint with a fascinating history. Our room was very nice. Unfortunately, what had been a 5 star experience was marred when, on our last night - after returning from dinner, a staff member who did not identify himself confronted us in the hallway leading to our room and yelled at us in heavily accented English, "do you belong here?" We had never been treated with suspicion in the many times we had already come and gone from our room and the hotel. We had trouble understanding the question because, of course, we belonged there. The staff member then demanded that we show our room key. He then demanded that we provide our room number and to open our door with the key. His attitude was hostile and demeaning. Even though we opened the door to our room he still treated us with suspicion. He departed without an apology. It was a jarring experience and I went down to the front desk to find out why this happened. The woman at the front desk appeared bemused by my. inquiry which made the experience even more insulting. The staff member who questioned us then appeared. He would not identify himself and acted like he had never seen me before. The front desk provided no recourse and clearly did not appreciate my wife and I being treated like criminals. This incident still rankles me months after it happened. We paid a lot of money to stay at this hotel and I feel like we came close to being arrested for trespassing on our last night there.

The Hotel d'Europe has a terrific location right near the Pope's Palace, shopping and the bridge. It's also accessible by car so you can drive right to the hotel with your luggage. Parking is hard like everywhere in Avignon. The rooms were nice but older and there was a generous morning breakfast. The staff was friendly and helpful as well.

This hotel was built in the 1600s and has a beautiful, welcoming courtyard and offered us excellent service at the front desk and from the valets. We had a superior room, which opened to a quaint courtyard and balcony with seating area. At night we had drinks in the common area but didn’t not try any of the food options. Air conditioning was superb and provided a respite from the warm Provençal sun. My only criticism was that the room was a tiny bit shabby and would benefit from a refurbishing.

Giving this four stars for the historic building, lovely shaded courtyard and good breakfast, but the hotel is badly in need of a facelift, especially in the bedrooms: some of the windows opened and others didn’t, missing lots of tiles in the shower, very old carpet fraying at the edges, AC that could not be adjusted. We visited La Mirande to see how the other half live, and will try to stay there next time!

Lovely hotel inside the walls and convenient to everything. Our room was large. The service was excellent. The hotel is old and oozes character and charm The breakfast was very good with plenty of choices. We would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
Absolutely charming and sophisticated hotel opened in... 1799! White table cloth breakfast (included for us). Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Great location . Walking distance to cute art galleries and shops. Minutes to the train station by taxi/uber. Do not miss the BEAUTIFUL shop, Madame de Crillion! Gifts and housewares that are reasonably priced relative to the other shops in the area. But there is no door from the street.

Yelp
This little boutique classic French hotel is conveniently located about 15 minutes walk from the train station. With its beautiful courtyard, country style Southern French style decor with a modern bathroom, it was within walking distance to the museums, restaurants, shopping, & pretty much every where. It's an off season that the hotel staff upgrades to a suite with a balcony. Friendly staff, nice cocktails in the bar, quiet, comfortable beds ... it was just nice. It would have been a 5 stars if they had provided the water everyday & the coffee machine worked better ; otherwise, it would be a great choice as compared with other modern hotel to experience a Southern French way. Recommend.

Yelp
Cool courtyard, friendly staff, food is great. I loved the location. Nestled in between historic attractions and great restaurants, I really enjoyed staying here. Definitely will go back.

Yelp
What a gem! The location is fantastic right at the entrance to the old city of Avignon so if you have a car you pull right into their driveway and within seconds they park your car which is a BIG convenience. The hotel staff is very attentive and helpful and the courtyard is filled with flowers and tables which is so pleasant. The rooms were well appointed, and quite charming. I would definitely stay here again if I have the opportunity.
