"You could drive past Hirschen a million times without realizing this 16th-century inn is home to a spectacular restaurant. Like many places in the area, Jonathan Burger and his team work with regional ingredients. In Bregenzerwald, that means local river fish, mushrooms from the forest, and mature cheese from local cows’ milk for breakfast. Lunch is a simple affair of käsespätzle and beef broth soup with fluffy dumplings. By night, the restaurant converts into a bistro offering peppers stuffed with local cheese, grilled venison, and lots of vegetables either char-grilled or poached in butter. Pastries and desserts like strawberry tartlets and lemon meringue pies made by chef Raphaela Wirrer are also worthy of a last bite." - Michelle Tchea

A lovely country inn, with superb elegant food, nice staff, and a beautiful mountain location handy for the annual Schubert festival.

We visited Hirschen for the second time and it was - again - a blissful week of pure enjoyment in every sense. The historic building with its art and lovely features, the lovely town and surroundings, it is all beautiful.||My breakfast at the Hirschen is one of the highlights of my stay here. It has been last year and it was again now. The served breakfast options even made it better. Perfectly sized dishes, so refined and tasteful. Also what I truly appreciated was that the children’s menu at night now had a healthy choice option (vegetables of the day with potatoes). Very worth mentioning are the cakes made by the in house patissier that are to die for. I am a lover of mascarpone and the strawberry and blueberry mascarpone tarts were one of the best I have eaten ever… ||for food lovers that can appreciate the subtle tastes of the variety of dishes this is the place to be as well. All in all I had a wonderful stay, thanks to the whole team that made it happen.

We stayed 5 days in this little gem. The historic building is fantastic. We stayed in the Max Suite which is a wonderful and beautiful decorated room. The breakfast is such a treat every morning, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves every time. The amazing service and the best fried eggs imaginable. I don’t think any egg can beat it. The fresh herbs, cheese and greens they use are so tasteful, the coffee is a dream. We can surely recommend this place for an unforgettable stay. However I like to mention one thing, if you are a light sleeper or are seeking a noise free Room..I would suggest NOT to stay in the Max Suite. This room, although my favorite of all especially the bathroom, is on the first floor in the historic building overlooking the village square/church on one side and the terrace/Stube on the other side. This means - in summer with the windows open, there is no airco , that you will hear chatter laughter and noise from the garden/terrace if you are unlucky until far after midnight. My husband had no problem with this, but I myself being a light sleeper had to wear earplugs to fall asleep. Next time we may consider staying in the other building if that means it is more quiet there.

Traditional and family-run, yet stylish and inspiring. Access to local pool and excellent location / access to hiking routes. Also, very family-friendly. Great food and service for breakfast and dinner. Nice pieces of art all across the hotel. We will definitely return.

My favorite hotel we've stayed in all year -- and we've been to 27 hotels across Europe in the past 24 months. We stayed at the Hirschen for two nights in early July and it wasn't nearly long enough. We had a near-perfect stay in the Bregenzerwald...and even the rain somehow made it more charming and beautiful! We loved our room -- Room #12 -- on the top corner of the hotel. Lovely view of the church, town square, fountain, and the mountains. Nice bedding, comfy bed, good plugs by the bed and throughout the room (near unheard of in a historic building), enough space for luggage, good storage furniture if you like to unpack your suitcases, cute table in the corner for working, windows that both open and vent, and plenty of space in the small bathroom for toiletries. The decor, the art, the furniture, and the lighting all reinforce that the Bregenzerwald's focus is quality. It feels perfectly in line with the area's design and architectural past and future. The Hirschen GETS that details matter. The bathroom was perfectly appointed with Susanne Kaufmann spa products, the welcome packet was charmingly on an industrial clipboard, there's a postcard for you to take home of a piece of art in your room, they put a hiking backpack in the wardrobe for you to borrow, and there are fair trade chocolates on your bed when you arrive. Even the fan we requested for our room was on-brand! As someone who worked in luxury hotels, I assure you, these details were not overlooked. From the bar to the restaurant to the garden, we had great meals there, even on days when the restaurant was closed to outside guests. I can only imagine what it would be like in full swing (I'm sure we'll find out because this definitely was not our last stay there). The breakfast spread was lovely and the cappuccinos were wonderful. We were traveling with our two year old son and they were very accommodating with a high chair and an overall welcome attitude to our toddler! A few tips: don't forget to go across the street to the covered pavilion and pick up brochures and info packets from the tourism board! Great information on hiking trails, biking routes, events, festivals, and other activities. And bring your swimsuits in the summer -- the Hirschen doesn't have a pool but the public pool up the road looked adorable! Cannot recommend highly enough.

We've known the area of Bregenzerwald for a long time, so we were quite excited to visit this gem. However, overall it was actually slightly disappointing. This might have to do with the fact that it is quite hyped and - in our view - couldn't deliver. ||First of all, Austria's current dealings with Covid 19 and the regulations are a bit too loose for my liking. The tables in the restaurant are so close to each other that I found myself whispering rather than talking when in a conversation. It also felt like whenever someone walked past, they brushed against the table, the chair or even myself. ||||During breakfast, some tables had to be set in the lounge/bar (lack of space in the restaurant), which isn't ideal for eating, since the sofas and comfy chairs are meant to lean back and "drown" in them, rather than sit upright and eat. The service personal was so busy that they kept erroring orders. Half of the breakfast was served in portions, the other half as set up as a buffet - conveniently situated in front of the door to the kitchen. I bet the serving staff loved that.||||If you want to use the internet frequently, try to avoid room number 5. The only place where you'll get any reception is while you're on the loo.||||Also, having a TV with 130+ channels would be great, but if only a handful of them work, well, it doesn't leave the best impression.||||Last but not least: if you have a bar, hire a bartender to go with it. Having the waiter from the restaurant follow me into an unattended bar to take my order is kind of awkward. I ordered an Amaretto sour and got an Amaretto with Lemon juice in it. At least there were ice cubes too, so it somewhat resembled a cocktail.||||All in all, I expected a lot. Too much, perhaps. There's still room to grow.

We have been to this hotel few times and we found the structure quite nice. Now we spent a night between the 6th and the 7th of September and our experience has been quite disappointing. The dinner has been mediocre and absolutely overpriced. The room has been even more disappointing. It was cold and the heater only worked for 30 minutes. In addition to this at 6:00 in the morning the heater started making much water noise and it continued for an hour waking us all up. So in summary dinner and room ovepriced for a very poor experience. We will not go again in this structure.
