Hôtel Le Royal Lyon - MGallery

Our courtyard room (view shown in picture) is large and tastefully decorated. Although some of the furniture is slightly tired looking, it's still pleasing. It's quiet inside the room, even though the hotel is quite fully booked. The moment you enter the hotel, you're greeted and serviced by an enthusiastic crew, which makes you feel welcomed. The crew is knowledgeable and the concierge is very helpful with our restaurant reservations. Location is EXCELLENT, with great public transportation, shops, eateries nearby. Will definitely stay here again in the future. We received a small cute souvenir on checkout - it's the attention to details that makes the difference!

It's a lovely hotel, perfectly located across from the heart of the Lyon square, adjacent to a large Metro stop and the post office (which came in very handy when I mailed a box back to the U.S.). A five-star rated hotel, the staff, along with the French ambience appointed rooms and hotel space, it was a delight to spend five lovely and relaxing nights at this hotel. The restaurant where breakfast is served offers a lovely French decor and various delicious cheeses, delicate meats and lovely homemade croissants and breads. Along with various beverages, espresso, you can also order ready made eggs of your choice, etc. Because the hotel is a school for cooking and teaching, you would never know that some of the staff are training. They are all welcoming, efficient and highly enthusiastic to ensure the guests receive excellent service with every interaction. My only recommendation would be to upgrade some of the beds (my mattress was too soft). Had I been there with my husband, we would have sunk to the middle. I was there with a Zingerman's Food and Wine Tour. Others in our group complained of soft mattresses. However, the room was excellent with a separate shower and tub. *As a recommendation to fellow travelers, take a night light that you can plug into an European adaptor. I will return to Lyon and definitely stay at the Hotel Le Royal Lyon.

It’s a very beautiful boutique hotel in a perfect location. Really nice decor with unique touches everywhere. Our room was large and the bed was very confy. The breakfast offering was a bit limited but of a very good quality. However, a few things made a little dissatisfied: The level of customer service was a disappointment. Our guest service agent felt quite unfriendly and cold at check-in and check-out. A little warmth and a smile would made us feel more welcome. No matter how luxurious your premises might be, it’s the people who make the difference. Despite our Accor Gold card, they refused to give an upgrade due to the hotel being full. In reality, they were still selling rooms for the duration of our stay in the upper category on their website at the moment of our check-in and immediately thereafter. Not sure if they were honest. Our room had a major handicap: the lack of a proper shower. The bathroom was large and had a huge bathtub, but no shower holder or a rainwater shower. You would need to sit in the bathtub and use the hand shower. Not great.

We booked a superior room overlooking the Place Bellecour and was very surprised when we walked in our room. The room was nicely decorated with beautiful wallpapers, drapes, and furniture. It was larger than I expected with a very comfortable bed and pillows. The room had a good size bathroom as well. The water was included in our booking which was very nice. The view from our room was also beautiful and to see locals going about their business. There is a bar located on the premise which serves decent cocktails. This hotel also has a breakfast service which we did not partake in. I did have a couple of issues during our stay. The room was warm and the AC would not cool down our room. We had to leave the window open to get some cool air in. Being close to a busy street, it would get noisy during the morning rush hour. Also on the left side of the bed there was a fire alarm system which had a red light that would blink at a few seconds intervals. If you're a light sleeper or get disturbed by lights when trying to sleep, this might be an issue.

Beautifully appointed hotel; lovely breakfast room which served an array of fantastic food; friendly & helpful staff. Location was perfect, within walking distance to food, shops and sights. Will definitely return!

Very nice hotel with a great location close to the heart of Lyon. Wonderful staff, very helpful, very professional. 1st floor room had high ceiling, tall windows. Nicely appointed, but could use one more comfortable chair. Very nice bar area and inviting restaurant.

This hotel is not a 4* hotel. The shampoo/ soap containers on the shower wall were not there just the plastic holders, the bed very uncomfortable, the room ( I had a suite) was very uninviting. It looked rundown vs charming. I wore my socks to bed. Additionally, I tried to change my reservation at check in at 1 am, but was told I had to do it in the morning with the day reception, which was fine. However, the morning clerks said, due to my arrival after midnight they would charge me for the second night. They were technically within their rights to do that, however, that wasn’t what I would have expected from a 4* hotel. Had I arrived by midnight it would have been doable. All in all, I was disappointed in a 600E suite.

The location is great and some of the public areas are smart enough although small. |The breakfast was good with a wide selection on offer and fresh eggs cooked to order. There is very little space between the tables so getting up to go to the buffet could be a challenge for some and a cold wind that whistles through the room so wear a jumper. |The room |We had a suite on the fourth floor overlooking the square and the views are great. Unfortunately it was not really a suite it was two rooms with an adjoining door. The first room has an old uncomfortable sofa that the cushions slid off if you at on it and one assumes it opens into a bed (god help anyone that had to sleep on that! The rooms are sad, dated, tired with cheep chipped furniture, scuffed walls, ugly carpet and dirty windows. The bathrooms haven’t been decorated since the late 80’s ( who doesn’t love standing in a bath tub with a handheld shower!) there is a hair dryer in the bathroom but the bear wires were a little concerning.|The service at reception and concierge was nonchalant to the point of useless. Taxis were booked in advance and then at the agreed time of arrival we were told it was not coming because of the rain or the traffic and we should take the metro or a bus! No apology just a shrug of the shoulders. |I would not recommend this hotel.

I absolutely loved this hotel!! This is my second M Gallery Hotel by Sofitel. The hotel is small, intimate, and cozy. The lobby is decorated in beautiful toile and French-designed furniture. Breakfast is beautiful as well as the bar. Great location in the old city of Lyon. The hotel staff is fabulous and they where very accommodating with my check-in and check-out to work around my schedule and plans. They also helped with dinner and taxis. The bed was very comfortable. I just hope I can return soon!!

Centrally located, walking distance to all touristic attractions and great restaurants.It's a little pricey, but well worth it. The hotel personal is very helpful.

Five star, unfortunately not. The "bones" are there but the negatives drag the property down. Reception staff is decidedly unfriendly (maybe just to Americans?), concierge staff much more helpful. Room was small for deluxe description, air conditioning ineffective and, worst of all, was being told the ac was perfect as is. Then there was the "too bad, just live with it" attitude at reception when the ONLY elevator in the hotel was out of service for two days (hello five floor walk up!!!). No comped days for incredible inconvenience!! One star is the minimum and then I added another for good breakfast buffet. Hey Americans: stay someplace else!!!!

Best hotel breakfast .... perhaps anywhere. The young trainees are enthusiastic, helpful and prepare wonderful food - - - especially recommend the omelette.

The hotel is nicely appointed, well situated, and the views are beautiful. But the mattress was abysmal, the (front-desk and housekeeping) service was spotty, and the in-room food service was a mixed bag. Admittedly, our poor French did not help, but we expected better from a five-star hotel (the service at our hotel in Paris was worlds better). Highs: -The views of La Place Bellecour really were phenomenal. The hotel is well situated relative to the bars, restaurants, and shopping of Lyon. -Our room was beautifully appointed. -We ordered breakfast in our room one morning. While it wasn't cheap (€25/per), it was hearty and quite good. Lows: -The mattress was so saggy that it hurt our backs. Their mattresses have a pillow-top cover which is very nice (their 'cocoon bed'), but the mattress itself was totally unsupportive. It felt like my back was bowing all night. My wife was so uncomfortable that she spent the last two nights sleeping on the floor. -The front-desk and housekeeping service was spotty. When we requested a blanket one morning we had to ask again that afternoon; we had to ask them to refill the coffee-pods for our in-room machine; our 'greeting' upon arrival was cold; etc. Small issues, but we expected better. -Room service, other than the breakfast, was mediocre. The croque monsieur I ordered was cold on the inside...

This hotel was lovely and had the best location. Everything was very elegant and rich with a Victorian feel. The rooms were very clean and well decorated with again, this Victorian theme, which I like. The staff was amazing! Everyone was friendly, directed us into the right direction, made travel arrangements, and booked restaurant reservations for us. Need I say more? No, but I'm going to say more. The hotel is centralized and walking distance to the shopping district as well as the subway. Lovely hotel.

I enjoyed my stay in the Royal Hotel Lyon. We selected a suite for our visit and we were pleased with its size. What was interesting and a pleasant surprise were the two separate bathrooms - one off of the bedroom, the other off of the sitting room. This was ideal for us as one of us is a morning person and the spare bathroom allowed me to get ready for the day as early as I wanted and keeping disturbances to a minimum. Decor is old world in style as evidenced by the hotel's web site. Our room was done in red with 18th century scene prints on the drapes and bed covering. One could tell the couch was well used (not worn) by the way the cushions wouldn't stay in place. In the bedrooms, linens were brilliant white and crisp - not the silkiest but comfortable nonetheless.The rooms are in need of some "freshening", however. For example, some of the paint was peeling in the bathroom. In one of the bathrooms there was also some rust bubbling through the surface around the tub. Also, as mentioned, some of the furniture could also stand to be replaced. Being off of the Place Bellecour, the location is ideal for wandering any parts of the city. Once we parked our car there was no need to use it for the three days we were in the city. We found several good restaurants within a couple of blocks of our location. Also, it was convenient to walk into the old part of town from the hotel. The staff is also quite friendly. They were patient with me as I stumbled through my broken French. The concierge (I can't recall his name) was especially ready to assist providing us with numerous options for dinner, drinks, sites, etc. Le Royal's restaurant was worth a mention as well. It provides a relatively limited menu, but what it offers it does well. Overall, I would recommend Le Royal Hotel in Lyon. It has some minor flaws but for those seeking a modicum of luxury in a convenient locale it's a good option.
