We stopped for two nights prior to joining an AMA Waterways Christmas Cruise. We have stayed in many "art hotels", where an argument between aesthetic designers and hotel guest practicality requirements was lost to the aesthetic designers, resulting in many impractical elements. How delightful to find that Hotel Märthof managed a perfect blend of "design and practicality". The lighting arrangements are absolutely exceptional!

Excellent hotel. Spacious comfortable room, excellent shower. Polite helpful staff. Good quality buffet breakfast in attractive dining room. Dining here is also popular at night, need to book. Excellent location for city centre and quick transport from airport to more or less outside hotel (bus 50 then 36 free with Basel card which get with hotel reservation confirmation).

Excellent hotel great location and friendly staff. Rooms very clean and had good amenities. Beds comfortable. Enjoyed Basel and the Christmas Markets. Hotel was vey convienent to go to markets and shopping close buy. Had lunch in the restaurant food was very good and had excellent service

A fantastic two nights with our daughter. We had two signature rooms next to each other. Very comfortable beds. The rooms are furnished beautifully. We had wonderful breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Not to be missed is the roof terrace with the views and a great area to sit and enjoy a drink in the evening (although you do need to bring your drink up from the bar or your room). |The hotel staff are all polite and very welcoming. |The location is perfect to step out and enjoy Basel at the ‘doorstep’. |Will definitely be looking to stay again in the future!

This hotel is very cute aesthetically and super centrally located in Basel. The service was also great.||However, all of that was overpowered by the fact that it sounded like you were sleeping in a train station at all times. Part of the convenience of the hotel is that it is located right by many major tram lines. But, much to our surprise, the rooms are not sound proofed and the trams run ALL night. ||If you are a light sleeper, avoid this hotel at all costs or, at a minimum, make sure to contact them and make sure you're given a room on the opposite side of the building from the trams.

Excellent hotel in almost all respects. Rooms modern and delightful. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great location. The main downside for light sleepers would be the rumble of the trams. It didn’t bother me but would be an issue for some people. I was staying over the weekend so there was no construction activity but the rebuilding of the site immediately adjacent to the hotel might cause significant problems at some times. As the staff member replying to other reviews has said, that’s not something the hotel can predict.

We spent one night (pre-cruise) at the Hotel Märthof Basel and loved every minute of our stay. From check-in to check-out, the reception staff was warm, welcoming, and helpful. The rooms are beautiful (and beautifully designed.) We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant, and that was also a delightful experience. Hotel Märthof is my top recommendation in Basel, Switzerland.
