I Visited My Grandfather’s Reborn Polish Hometown That Was Destroyed in World War II — Here’s What I Found

"A historic hotel in Wrocław with a rooftop restaurant, famously known for surviving World War II bombings and hosting notable figures like Adolf Hitler, Marlene Dietrich, and Pablo Picasso." - Laura Moserb

Hotel Monopol (Wrocław, Poland) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Opened in 1892 by a prominent Wrocław banker, Hotel Monopol became the city’s most distinguished stay, hosting names like Marlene Dietrich and Pablo Picasso, who famously left behind a sketched dove on a restaurant napkin. Restored in 2009, it still wears its history well: sandstone façades, curved ceilings, and expanses of black and sable marble. Rooms are dramatic and tailored, with exposed brick, dark woods, and high ceilings framing views of St. Dorothy’s church. It may have hosted legends, and it’s known for its exceptional hospitality even today." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed for 3 nights. The room was very clean and spacious with a walk in shower and a jaccuzi bath. The bed was very comfortable. We had access to the spa which was great, sauna, steamroom, pool and gym. The roof terrace bar has amazing views over the city. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, always smiling. The best part was the amazing breakfast, what a spread! Well done!

Whilst the location, public rooms, spa, service and other communal amenities of this hotel are indeed 5* the design of the enormous bedrooms and en suite bathrooms is a complete joke in which some of the worst aspects of modern interior design are on display. These include curtains which do not keep out the light or even cover the windows properly, ceiling mounted showers which spray water all over the floor, bathrooms with too few hooks and without a heated towel rail to hang wet towels, bedside tables without a plug for the guest’s mobile phone, a quilt which is too small for the bed, only two very thin pillows on a super-king size bed, only one very small and practically useless stand for the guests’ suitcases, “designer” room lighting which is too dark to see properly at night and which is even worse in the bathrooms, where even the mirror was not lit properly and a glass panel between the shower and the bedroom which means that if one person uses the bathroom during the night the light shines into the bedroom and wakes up the other person. And finally, a luxury hotel in a major city should have at least one International English language news channel, such as BBC, CNN or SKY on the TV in the room and not just one French channel in English.

This hotel is wonderful, situated in the pretty old town of Wroclaw, perfect to explore everything on foot and close to many really good restaurants, bars, cafés and shops as well as the daily market. As a tip, go to traditional polish restaurants, not the many pizza and pasta places, and you will be pleasantly surprised at the excellent cuisine and service. We therefore didn't eat in the hotel and can't comment. The room was a standard double and was very spacious and clean. A lot of wardrobe space, nice view from the big floor to ceiling windows. Staff are professional, helpful and quick. In a beautiful historical building the hotel is stunning and has a lovely roof terrace, pool, sauna, spa, gym, restaurant - everything you need. The location is superb. The only thing was that the lighting is a bit dim and makes it difficult to see anything in the corridor and the wardrobes. The bathroom is big and they provide first class toiletries. I usually never use them as I am fussy but these were excellent. The shower is a walk in one and unfortunately floods the bathroom floor every time you shower. There is a floor to ceiling window without any blinds between bedroom and bathroom - it didn't bother us at all but some may not like it when showering or sitting on the loo. Overall a very nice place and we had a wonderful few days in this lovely city. I would recommend Monopol and would stay again any time.

Stayed for three nights in June. We appreciated that they were able to fit us in at the last minute after a long drive when our booked hotel proved unsuitable. And the rooftop bar is worth a visit. But overall we felt that the hotel was trading on its history rather than the quality of what it delivers today. Our room, although spacious, felt pretty tired and needed a makeover and better decoration / nicer furniture to justify the price. The rather ordinary sofa bed placed against one wall didn't feel 5 star, and the dark wood finish to the desk was showing a lot of wear and chips. The communal areas downstairs (lounge etc) are also pretty limited other than the rather spartan bar - nowhere nice to enjoy sitting and relax. If you are after a special luxury feel (rather than the history) I would probably look elsewhere.

June 2025 This is such a beautiful hotel. Because we’re a family of 5 (2 adults, 1 young adult and 2 teens), we stayed in a two bedroom suite and a double room, with both rooms right next to each other. The rooms have a minimalist aesthetic that feels clean and spacious. The bathroom is to die for, with marble everywhere, gorgeous shower and tub. I’ve included photos.

We chose this hotel because we had already stayed at Hotel Warszawa, Copernicus, and Hotel Stary in Kraków, as well as Monopol in Katowice. Grand Hotel in Łódź is still on our list to visit.|This wasn’t our first stay at Monopol—we were here about three years ago and had good memories of its style and central location, which made us want to return. Unfortunately, after this visit, we’ve decided it will be our last, as we found more downsides than positives.||For a five-star hotel, certain amenities were noticeably missing. Typically, you’d expect a coffee machine or at least a kettle with tea and coffee in the room, but none were provided. This felt unusual for a hotel of this standard.||Sound isolation was a major issue. We could hear every step and movement from neighboring rooms on both sides, making it difficult to sleep—especially on Valentine’s Day, which made privacy nearly impossible. Even in the bathroom, we could hear everything happening in adjacent rooms. Another big downside was the smell of cigarettes, which we could notice in our room, coming from other rooms. This was very unpleasant and unexpected in a five-star hotel.||The spa and gym were also disappointing. The gym is extremely small, packed with machines but with barely any space to move. There’s no room for stretching or core exercises, and they don’t provide mats for stretching afterward. The swimming pool water was uncomfortably cold, and the Jacuzzi was even colder, making it difficult to enjoy. On top of that, the ventilation system seemed off, as cold air was constantly blowing from the vents and doors.|The steam bath was one of the better features, but the marble surfaces weren’t cleaned properly, which was unpleasant when lying down. Another downside is that there is only one bathroom for all guests—no separate changing rooms—so if you're using the pool and gym, you have to share one space. The good thing is that when I asked the waiter for oat milk, they brought it to the table.||Breakfast was average, offering standard options. However, considering the growing focus on wellness, I was surprised by the lack of lactose-free and gluten-free options readily available at the buffet, which is unusual for a five-star hotel. Additionally, they have an à la carte menu with dishes like scrambled eggs and eggs Benedict, etc., which are freshly prepared and served at the table—definitely a plus.||Finally, at check-out, the reception staff didn’t ask about our stay—a small but important gesture that would have shown attentiveness to guests’ experiences.|Overall, while the hotel has a great location and aesthetic, the lack of comfort, amenities, and attention to detail means we won’t be returning.

Google
Monopol hotel it's not just a hotel or a place, it has some history to it but you will not enjoy the history not as much as the present. |Large rooms, beautiful spa, clean, very professional staff and the location is the best of all Wrocław.|Now, do i recomend the restaurant? Well, i found better on the main square (means 500m ahead). Do i recomend the hotel? Yes! It's worth every cent!

Google
Absolute disappointment of a hotel. The food in the room service was absolutely horrible, unbearable, I had to keep ordering from Uber Eats in order to eat in the room - for a 5 star hotel in such price range - very bad. The staff at the front dest was not flexible and one of the ladies was even annoyed and unpleasant. Manager was pleasant, but not useful - stuck to the script and was not able to solve any issues. Additionally, I have my sweater for a dry cleaning service and they quietly put it in a closet, without any notification, causing me to forget it in there, when I asked them to ship to my home - refused. Furthermore, I booked and payed 2 rooms for 5 nights each and had to depart earlier, and I asked for a refund in advance, to which they also refused. The cleaning lady was coming inconsistently, I had to call in for a cleanup. Overall 1 star, not coming back, recommending everyone to avoid at all cost.

Yelp
Excellent Hotel in excellent location! Close to rynek and all the attractions in the city center! This is my 4th or 5th stay here and we absolutely love it!

Yelp
We came to the hotel's restaurant for a group dinner, so we ordered from the group menu. If you like marble, you will like the interior of this historic restaurant. Dining here was a lovely experience. They kept our glasses filled with wine through the meal. My friend does not drink alcohol and has a lot of food allergies and they were careful to discuss everything with her and answer her questions. There were four courses to the meal with plenty of fish options, all of which were excellent. The smoked sturgeon as appetizer was a pleasant surprise. Although there were good options for the second course, I felt like I didn't have enough pierogi so I tried their pierogi and surprise, it was delicious. The monkfish was also good for the fish course. The lavender panna cotta was more beautiful but I appreciated the fresh fruit and finished it, of course.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, great room, and a very reasonable price. Excellent location just blocks from market square. Rooftop bar area was very. Excellent buffet breakfast each morning with a very wide selection of meats, fruit, veg, got options, cereal, pastry, Nespresso coffee, fresh squeezed juices, cheeses, and more. Caters to an international crowd so there is something for everyone. Staff is on the ball. Only here for a weekend and by Monday hostess in the cafe knew my coffee preference without asking. Downstairs bar has a few late night food options, and a wall of windows that can be opened when the weather permits. My room had 5 meter/15 foot ceilings, and the massive bathroom door was 4 meters tall. Comfortable bed, Jacuzzi tub with temp control, rainfall shower, bidet, sitting area in main room, large wardrobe with hanging space and shelves, two umbrellas in the room, and excellent service.

Yelp
This hotel is so nice! It is beautiful inside and out, a 3 minute walk away from the city center / market place. It is tastefully decorated and furnished, it is very clean and the staff is friendly. The spa / workout area is very nice and clean but on the smaller side (e.g. there are two treadmills). The swimming pool is so nice as well and I loved the saunas. We did not have the pleasure to dine there but the rooftop bar is so very nice during good weather! The hotel could have a better selection of different whiskey's / whisky's - or at least keep the ones that are on the menu actually stocked. We ran into our selection not being. Also the hotel was very quiet. Neither sounds from within the hotel of from outside woke us up or were bothering us! Surprising for a very central location with a street and zone for pedestrians nearby. Altogether a great experience!

Yelp
Was upgraded to a corner room on the 4th floor with beautiful view, as well as huge room, nice furniture, and super sized bathroom with 2 showers. The staff is professional and attentive. The breakfast buffet is top quality with good selection. The building is elegant, historic and well maintained. Location is close to everything. Definitely highly recommended.

Yelp
The hotel itself is 124 years old, and has the history to go with it. It has seen many famous people in it's days, including both Hitler and Pablo Picasso. It's hard not to feel a bit humbled when walking the hallways. The building itself is clearly a 5 star affair. The spa is also a 5 star affair. The rooms fall in the 4-5 star category. The room service is 4 star. To be honest I am being a bit harsh here. The prawn salad is quite excellent but the club sandwich arrived in a bathtub worth of mayo on one out of three occasions. The kitchen was kind enough to provide me another sandwich without mayo after some back and forth. The room service was inexpensive and all in all a good experience, but the mayo fiasco did take an hour or two. Most 5 star hotels I stay at these days are clearly not deserving of the 5 stars. Monopol absolutely deserves the rating. If I could be more specific it would be 4.5/5 due to the room service issue, but honestly I am being very picky here.

Yelp
I have stayed three times in this wonderful hotel and I like it a lot. I enjoy it for its location in the Wroclaw's downtown (just next to the Opera House), for its loooong history, but chiefly for its modern interior (a black Turkish marble in the lobby, walnut-acacia-stone room with tall designer doors (wow!), bathrooms from marble with personal Jacuzzi bath with colored underwater lights and with a designer showers ... Yes, this hotel is an art and I wish I knew the name of its interior designers (does anybody know?). The main restaurant downstairs is quite big and spacy and the bar downstairs could be opened in the hot summer days to the street, which is pretty cool. The dark history of this place (yes, Hitler once gave a speech from its balcony) seems to be too far and too forgotten. I would gladly give the highest rating to this hotel, but I can't do it after my last visit in July 2013. I faced those little problems: doors from my room were closing just with a big bang (they were broken), the toilet in my room was not flushing properly, the existence of one lift for the whole hotel was not too practical in morning peaks, a complimentary bottled water in my room was delivered occasionally, a complimentary parking (5 slots in front of the hotel) was full when I arrived on Monday morning, the receptionist was not too kind when I asked her for some Polish cash ... I still think that this hotel should aspire to the highest ranking, but the services, and the attention to the details, need to improve!
