Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"If Tokyo is tasked with representing the future, while Kyoto carries the weight of the past, then maybe Osaka can be free to simply be itself. Hotel Noum Osaka eschews high concept in favor of what might be the defining feature of present-day Japan: unpretentious excellence. The rooms are minimalist and modest but invitingly warm and reassuringly comfortable." - Mark Fedeli

"If Tokyo is tasked with representing the future, while Kyoto carries the weight of the past, then maybe Osaka can be free to simply be itself. Hotel Noum Osaka eschews high concept in favor of what might be the defining feature of present-day Japan: unpretentious excellence. The rooms are minimalist and modest but invitingly warm and reassuringly comfortable; some face the Okawa river, while others sleep up to four in a pair of bunk beds. There’s a versatile café and lounge serving a made-to-order breakfast and an all-day light menu, and pouring brews roasted by Tokyo’s highly regarded Berth Coffee." - Tablet Hotels

After staying at a few hotels across Japan over the last few weeks, I can legitimately say this was hands down my favourite and I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Modern, clean and if you can snag a riverside view room - do! The rooms are slightly larger than typical Japanese hotels. The location is great and about a 9 minute walk to the closest subway station. I also really appreciated the laundry on site, along with a water fountain with water pitchers and glasses, a fridge and freezer on the 5th floor. But what stands out the most to me at this hotel is the staff. Warm, attentive, kind and all speak English. I loved the greetings when coming in or leaving also. Shoutout especially to Kyo and Chibu who really went above and beyond! Thank you for an absolutely wonderful stay!

Gorgeous boutique hotel. Extremely clean, VERY comfortable bed (worth a few extra ¥ for the river view), friendly and attentive staff, the breakfasts deserve a special mention! 5 stars to the chef - your breakfasts kept me fuelled up! Spacious shower with excellent pressure. The only thing to keep in mind, the nearest train station is less than 10min (riverside) walk. With a short train ride to the city centre. In saying that, the hotel is lovely and quiet at night. At night, I felt completely safe coming back to the hotel. I've already recommended it to friends who've asked me where I stayed. Would I stay here again? YES!!

TOP spot! Veeeery good price-quality balance. Beds are a bit small for two (1.40m, twijfelaars) but suuuper soft. Rooftop with cute sauna tent, awesome coffee bar downstairs integrated in the hotel that make your breakfast too - and the personal at the reception is super helpful with bike renting, local tips and changing money for doing laundry for example. Top spot at the Osaka riverside park too! 🌟🤗🌞 Grap a coffee and sit outside at their terrace or at the river. Best from Amsterdam ♥️

Had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Noum. The staff were delightful and had good English. The cafe in the restaurant served a fab breakfast, there were laundry facilities, it was very quiet and rooms were clean. Shower and toilet were very good. Would’ve appreciated an extra pillow though :) Note the rooms and beds are very small. About 9 minutes walk to train station.

Really enjoyed our stay here, the room was very modern and cozy. Biggest shower ever in a Japanese hotel so far 🤣, we liked it alot! Also has a nice rooftop terrace that you can visit. Would stay here again if we were to visit osaka again sometime

❤️❤️❤️ My stay at this hotel was absolutely perfect ! The mid century Scandinavian-inspired décor is beautiful and creates a very pleasant atmosphere. The bed was extremely comfortable, the room spotlessly clean, and perfectly quiet. The staff were warm, professional, and spoke excellent English, which made everything even easier. Breakfast was varied and delicious, and lunch was also very good. Excellent value for money – everything is designed with the guest’s comfort and well-being in mind. I truly loved my stay here and highly recommend this hotel!

I enjoyed my stay! I stayed here for two nights while traveling solo, and it was just what I needed. I was given an accessible room (even though I didn’t specifically request or need one), which made the room and shower feel quite spacious, especially by Japan standards. The staff were very friendly, and I appreciated the free hotel breakfast. It’s less than a 10-minute walk from the nearest train station, but the main downside is that there aren’t many restaurants nearby, so that’s something to keep in mind. The area felt quiet and safe, which was nice to be away from the busier parts of Osaka but still have it close enough. There are some convenience stores a bit of a walk away. The room was tidy, the bed was comfortable, though some of the walls showed a bit of wear. Overall, I had a pleasant short stay and would recommend this hotel for solo travelers!

Staff were extremely helpful in recommendations for dinner and coffee. Rooms are small but felt spacious and comfortable (we are in Japan!). Great breakfast! Highly recommend.
