Zur Sonne

"Hanspeter Rombach attaches great importance to organic ingredients in his inviting, friendly restaurant. The cuisine is regional and classical: on the menu, for example, local venison ragout in Spätburgunder sauce or filet of organic salmon and wild gambas in pumpkin juice sauce. There are also cosy guestrooms and a pretty sauna area." - Michelin Inspector

We stayed at the hotel and ate at the restaurant. As for the hotel: it’s totally fine. Nothing fancy but clean with slightly dated bathrooms. The restaurant on the other hand was major disappointment. They had one person waiting all tables inside and outside while also tending to reception at the same time. Needless to say the service was inattentive despite his best effort. The food was below average. The bread was dry, the butter lacked any salt (also none on the table), the signature cocktail tasted like straight Apple cider vinegar, and the venison ragout was very bland. On a positive note the trout was decent and the German venison dumplings (Rehmaultaschen) were excellent. But all in all the food was subpar and certainly not worth the price. 37 Euros for the venison ragout it insane, when a better one can be had across the street for 23 Euros.

This review is for the restaurant. Like many in the Black Forrest this restaurant has a quiet atmosphere with high quality local food and professional and friendly service. No english menu but the servers speak very good English and can explain. Fantastic local wine selection in half bottle size. Children’s menu is a smaller version of adults menu - which we love!!

Real quality hotel, with many great hikes to do in the area. We enjoyed a lot the wellness infrastructure. It is perfect to relax the body deeply after a long hike. The restaurant is amazing, and the staff is genuinely nice and friendly. We had an excellent stay and I'll look forward to return hiking in the region and relax at the Sonne hotel.

We had been recommended this restaurant by a hotelier in a nearby village, and what an excellent recommendation it turned out to be. We arrived at about 4pm, in between lunch and dinner services when the restaurant was empty. After checking with the kitchen that they would be prepared to cook for us, they welcoming hostess showed us to a lovely large table in window. Understandably the fully dressed tables in their white linen were off limits - as they were being prepared for the evening.||We three snuggled into one corner of the table and enjoyed a leisurely afternoon meal with unobtrusive and helpful service from staff. The tagliatelle with goats cheese and rocket/cashew pesto was divine. The stars of the dish were the grilled tomatoes that elevated the dish to near perfection. A few more on the plate would have been most welcome! Two of us had this dish, our companion had the Schwarzwald trout which was reported to be delicious too. We finished our meal with lovely coffees which were served with a tiny petit four - I could have eaten six of them.||This restaurant is not cheap but neither should it be. The food was excellent, the decor is modern and clean with a strong traditional edge to it. It is light and bright and somehow warm and cozy too. This place is worth a visit for sure!!

We’ve stayed at the Sonne before. It was wonderful then and it remains so. |The rooms are super clean and comfortable. I would have like another pillow. And that would be the only negative thing I can say about the Sonne. For certain, had I asked, they would have given me one so it’s not even a valid criticism. |As for the food, the breakfast is the best I’ve ever eaten in any hotel anywhere on the planet. Wonderful honeys, jams, breads and fruits all of which are 100% organic. |We’ve probably eaten twenty or more set menu evening meals at the Sonne and without exception the food was outstanding. You don’t need to understand the menu. Just sit back and let it happen. This is the best restaurant in town.|The locals already know it. We watched as people arrived and most knew the waiters and waitresses well because they shook hands. Normally Germans don’t shake hands with waiting staff but here they do. That tells you that the locals keep coming back and they were well heeled locals.|As for the staff, they seldom leave. There’s no manager that you can see because they don’t need one. I’m guessing that they are relatively well paid and they work very hard to keep their customers happy. It’s slightly weird to see people working so well and so hard without a manager but that’s exactly how this place works . What is extraordinary is that the owners are as ‘hands on’ now as they were several years ago when we started coming.|If the Sonne was in England it would have at least one Michelin star. The food is untampered and local in every sense. |My advice is to get there and try it. |We love it and, if we had the money, we would bring the entire family here once a year. At least. |The Sonne gets five stars any day. |

St. Peter is nice village in the Black Forest that we spent two nights at. It is quite modern both in the restaurant and in the rooms. Very clean and comfortable. The included breakfast was almost of gourmet quality as the restaurant is a high end one. It was very good both days. Unfortunately, there where no English menus for the evening meals, so we were unable to go there for dinner. There were other restaurants in town that accommodated english speaking guests. Other than that, the staff was friendly and accommodated us quite well. We would recommend this place when staying in the Black Forest region. Lots of hiking trails around.

We really enjoyed staying in this hotel. The restaurant is absolutely beautifully styled. ||||We loved the robes and slippers in the room. We had a large balcony off of our room and a gorgeous bathroom.||||We were dissapointed there was nobody to welcome us on the Monday we arrived but this appears to be common in this area and Mondays are generally quieter.||||We would have also liked an English translation in the room book.||||This little village is very picturesque and worth the visit- like a postcard!

My favourite restaurant in the Freiburg area. Absolutely delicious food ! The place had a Michelin star in the past. High quality ! Gourmet place. 😊 Also the Ambiente is very nice. Including a sun terrace in summer. Very friendly owners. Great service. Reasonable prices.
