This late‑night favorite near campus built a following around Smokin’ Joe’s buttery crust and a lineup of sauces from regular to howlin’ hot. Praised by local food writers for variety and value, it’s a lively, independent slice of High Street culture.

I've been in Columbus for about 5 years and it was my first time trying them about a week ago! I should've tried them sooner! My order was a Large pepperoni pizza and their lasagna bites to go! The pizza: cheesy, HOT, full of flavor, and absolutely fresh! You can tell they make their dough in house, simply by the pleasant smell of the yeast, delightfully shouting at your nostrils, when you go to take a bite! The Lasagna Bites, everything you'd love about a homemade lasagna from your Grandmother, but succulently elevated by it being deep fried! The outside is crispy and the inside is a beautiful lasagna! Whether you're just visiting Columbus or staying, I would ABSOLUTELY make Hound Dog's Pizza, a 1st stop!

I had my 60th Birthday celebration at Hounddog’s Pizza on Saturday. We ordered 8 pizzas between all the people in our party. Everything was cooked to perfection. The food was out to our table in a timely fashion. Our waitress Angela was friendly and professional. My husband called ahead to secure seating for 11 and you delivered. There was no extra charge. Thank you Hounddog’s for everything. Your atmosphere was nice, your location convenient there was even parking. We had several people who had never had your pizza- everyone loved it!

Google
Without question one of the better pizzas in Columbus. Interesting combo pizza forced us to try 2 different pies and it did not disappoint. Breakfast pizza was great. Thanks bill for the great service on Easter!

Google
Houndog's has been the best pizza in columbus for the past decade or more. Everytime I've been the food has been on point. The staff is always accommodating for allergy substitutions for my little one. Cheese on the garlic cheesey bread was like out of a commercial, perfectly cheesey. They made us a fresh batch of lemonade while we were there as well.

Google
Wonderful pizza ! Amazing. The place was super busy but we didn’t wait but 15 minutes. The server forgot our appetizer so she just refunded it, then still gave us the app anyways in like the middle of eating our pizza. Best nachos I’ve ever had and not just cause they were free. Definitely well worth the 15 bucks charged. Amazing. Our pizza was so good! I dreamed of it and then woke up and ate leftovers cold. Best house white pizza I’ve ever had thus far. We also had a hand tossed Pepp and cheese ( I wanted to try both crust ). Wow!! The best Pepp and cheese I’ve had so far in Ohio . I didn’t even feed the Pepp’s to the dog or dip my crust in ranch. It was that good! Must try

Google
First time ordering from this place. Had tried it before and it was delicious but when ordering myself for the first time I’m disappointed. The crust doesn’t look at all like the Smokin joes crust I’ve seen before. It was very thin not at all like other reviews. I asked for it well done and this is not very baked. Called and spoke to the manager, he was kind and solved the issue. Hopefully it was just an off day and next time will be better.

Google
Pizza is just mediocre. Mozzarella sticks tasted like plastic. Don't bother getting the nacho appetizer, looks like a mountain of lettuce on top of nachos and it tasted horrible. Lemonade also tasted more like salt water. Had really high hopes coming here. So disappointed.

Google
Someone recommend this pizza place to my and I came, the place looks slightly dirty, idk if it's because that matches with their style or something, the pizza was 25 for a 12 inches pizza which is slightly expensive. I ordered a Hawaiian Pizza and couldn't taste the pineapple, the main ingredient was the bacon and ham, which I like, and the pizza was not bad at all. It was just not Hawaiian. The thin crust was very hard, I feel like if you wait 5mins you'll have a very hard time. Overall I think the place is overrated but is not bad neither.

Yelp
I've "struggled" with finding "good" pizza here in Ohioooooooo (not that I'm PICKY or anything... Just a "BIT" of a NY pizza snob!!) but I'll be the first to give credit where credit is due if I find a pizza "worthy" (ha!!) of my seal of approval, and that's just what I found during my recent visit to Hound Dog's!! Yep, I drove 50 miles approx. each way for good pizza, great company, and a real "throwback" college hangout vibe, and I'd do it again!! Specifically planning for leftovers, I ordered a 14" smoking Joe crust (mmmmm!) cheese pizza and added meatballs (very flavorful!!) and banana peppers. Went with the regular sauce, though I'd like to return and try the spicier option. I considered some of the specialty pies, but decided to keep it relatively simple. Lots of meaty options, less veg., unless you "design" your own. Others at my table enjoyed apps like stuffed mushrooms, mozzarella sticks, a LARGE side salad, and some tempting looking onion rings, but that pizza I ordered was waaaaaay more than enough for me. Two SLICES of hot, steamy deliciousness, on a perfectly crunchy, flavorful crust were more than enough for me, and my leftovers tempted me the whole way home!! I'm sure this place gets MUCH busier during "prime time" hours, but there was a pretty good crowd for an early Tuesday evening. Service was quick, prices reasonable, and if I lived closer, this just might be my cozy, hole-in-the-wall, GOOD spot for GREAT pizza (and more!!)

Yelp
My search for the best Columbus pizza has led me to Hounddog's Pizza. It has been many years since I've had their pizza and so many claim it is their favorite, I just had to give it a fresh try. First off, these is some good pizza. I understand why so many like it. However, I would not rank it the best. The restaurant has a cool vibe and the space is perfect for the college crowd on campus. I also was impressed with the friendly service. However, the crust and sauce wasn't my favorite. I ordered a Hound dog thin crust pepperoni, mushroom, and black olive pie. I also tried a hand tossed pepperoni, sausage and onion pie. Both had a generous amount of fresh toppings. Both were well cooked. For most people, that's all they need. But for me, I needed more flavor in the sauce. I also had hoped for a crunchy, chewy crust. The crust is a big deal for me, so these pies didn't hit the mark. Lastly, these are expensive pizzas. $48 for two 12" pizzas is expensive. If you're hosting a party, will everyone enjoy these pizzas? Yes. Having said that, my search continues for the best pizza.

Yelp
I had heard two things before going to Hounddog's: that it was a bar and that it had good pizza. I'm here to tell you it's so much more than the sum of those parts! Hounddog's is a vibe. It has all these dark, fun little booths, nooks and crannies. There is a pool table area. There is stained glass. The staff is lovely! We had our team holiday party here and it was super fun. A little loud, but good times. Pizza was super good - we had chicken bacon ranch, sausage and the one with spicy sausage and sauerkraut. All better than expected! Mozzarella sticks and cheesy bread starters were aces, too. I'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Super fantastic, definitely cool vibe, was in town for Sonic Temple, 2025, saw a review from Dave Portnoy, decided to check it out, definitely worth the trip, service was outstanding, very friendly and accommodating, Pizza is really good!

Yelp
I've been going here for over 20 years and I love it so so much. It was great as a drunken 20 year old and now it's a great place to drag my kids. Beer, pizza, and ambience. Seriously, it's a classic and I hope it lives on forever. LONG LIVE HOUNDOGS!

Penetrable S.

Yelp
Ohhhh MMMMM GGGGG!!!! I MISS HOUNDDOG'S PIZZA ever since I moved out of Clintonville! I wish there was a HOUNDDOG'S on each side of town so everyone can experience everything about this place! The service is excellent! The ambiance is soothing for my SOUL! I don't feel overwhelmed with my Autism when I am in this place! I love shooting pool; the music...the people! Love you guys! "A side of spicy sauce to take home please!" YUMMMMM!!!! It's my brother's favorite now too btw....

Yelp
First time in. It's been on our list for a long time. Wow I'm glad we did. The pizza is amazing. We were torn on which one to get, so many sounded good. We asked our server Bill what he likes and he said the breakfast pizza is the best. So that's what we got. It's a huge place. Tons of tables. Big tables for groups. Pool tables. Bar. We got the breakfast pizza and the regular pepperoni and cheese. Both were very different and very delicious. The pepperoni and cheese was great cold the next day, which is one of my pizza requirements. The breakfast pizza is amazing. It's serve with warm syrup. Wow. The flavor profile is to die for. I had it in the toaster oven the next day for breakfast and it was just as good as the night before when it was fresh. Wow. The Buffalo chicken balls were SO GOOD. The loaded fries were absolutely amazing. Wow. The flavor! Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
Some of the best wings I've ever had! And staff is very nice. Every time I come it's awesome food.

Yelp
Hounddog's pizza was the first pizza I ever had in Columbus after moving here, and it did not disappoint! The crust is phenomenal, and the food and vibes never disappoint!

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for awhile because many people have mentioned it to me- it seems to be a Columbus institution. Inside decor is tavern like. Bathroom is gross. Customer service is a little crass but I did call ahead and they were okay with me scheduling a pick you up time. It wasn't ready when I arrived but at least I knew it was freshly made after waiting for a while. Pizza was fine. Not bad but not great. Very greasy. The pesto pizza was very muted on the pesto, was very tomato forward. Smoking Joes crust was good. Glad I went and will probably return if someone else is really driving that we go there, wouldn't probably select it in my own.

Yelp
Best pizza in Columbus! And a cool diningroom. Go for the Backyard Dog on Smoking Joe's crust.

Yelp
They were definitely short staffed this day, 2 servers, one was the bartender, however, these 2 killed it! They were up beat, not stressed. Very communicate and worked their butts off. I own a restaurant and I would hire them in a heartbeat! Service was actually better than I expected knowing they were short. So that tells you a lot. Great job you two! I wish I knew your names but you both deserve praise! If the manager or owners read this, you have 2 phenomenal employees that ran this place like it was their own! We were there on Saturday March 1st around 2:00. If this is how your employees treat your business then you are doing something right! Great job!
google avatar

Yelp
Love their pizza here! Always get the smokin' joes crust! So good! If you dine in it's a great place for people watching. One of my favorite pizza places in C-bus
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic pizza! Soft top side crust with a nice crunchy base. We got the pepperoni and it ranks up there; even garnering the approval of my teenage son!!

Yelp
Who loves Salt? Who loves Burnt pizza? Who loves so much seasoning on their pizza your hands are caked in it? Who loves being laughed at? If this is you come on down to Hound dog's pizza. While coming home from a long trip on 2/21/24 we decided to stop by hd's. So we decided to call ahead, since this was our first time eating from this place we decided to inquire about any specials. I guess that was enough to be laughed at, so then I asked about getting a half and half, well I guess there was issue understanding that because I felt dumber than ever. The pizza was mediocre at best, and the saltest thing I believe I have tasted or at least in the top 10. I mean, it took a bottle of water or more for each slice. Feeling sick and bloated afterwards, and taste was terrible due to all the seasoning. I also think there was something wrong with the crust, it seemed under cooked, however, I am not sure. It was really doughy, not light and fluffy at all. It's like they did not cook it properly. It like they turned the oven up, and speed up the belt but it did not properly cook all the way through. I have included pictures of it. It's not the worst pizza I have ever had, but, I would not recommend at this point. Perhaps it could have been due to a rush, and or not enough employee's, I don't know but today that quality was just not there. I would rate 2.5 out of 5, however, this is one time I will round down. According to yelp 2 is a could've been better. 2/5

Yelp
I've been to this spot many times over the past few years, and it is definitely simply delicious, greasy, buttery, good, good good. The likelihood of me having a tall glass of beer and having several slices of luxury pizza, and not enjoying it would be low. Quality of the pizza has been consistent. Way better than the typical Columbus pizza in my opinion. Go for the smokin Joe's crust 100% of the time. Sidenote, you like Donatos pizza, you should probably not be allowed to give pizza places rating on yelp.

Brandon L.

Yelp
Just had the best pizza and the best serving experience of my life! 20/10 we got 2 of the 16 inch pizzas a order of fried lasagne bites after being recommended by our server Kevin and some kind of meat covered french fries. Everything was absolutely to die for our server was funny and entertaining at all times and we cannot wait to come back. When you come in, ask for Kevin.

Yelp
Staying at a local hotel and ordered delivery. The person on the phone was curt and short with me. Delivery took nearly 1 hour. The Veggie Pizza was horrible... I had one piece and my son had half a piece. I cant figure out what's wrong but it's just bad. the Cheese pizza wasn't much better. My kids usually eat pizza up and we have plenty of leftovers of both tonight. Gross.

Todd C.

Yelp
Poor management and pizza! Taco pizza...salty, very salty like your manager Star...Can't believe how I was treated...I couldn't call Jeff Stewart, today I will try again, tomorrow.

Yelp
I've been coming here for about 8 years now. Pro Tips: - Don't get appetizers. I haven't had any that are notable. - The happy hour special Monday-Thursday includes a large pizza and a pitcher deal making the pitcher effectively $2 which is crazy. - THE PIZZA IS THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD! - The house made ranch is made FOR the pizza! What to get: - Large Pepperoni Pizza (split between 2-3 ppl) - Smokin Joe's Crust (Garlic Butter Crust) - Side of RANCH for EVERY person at the table. ($1 ea.) Their ranch is house made and you can buy it by the pint if you wish which is actually more cost effective sometimes. When I tell you the ranch is phenomenal with their pizza I truly mean it. I have converted many friends who don't usually like ranch and or ranch on their pizza. The ranch they make here is truly one of a kind and I would play upwards of $5000 for the recipe. Please hit me up. Serious inquires only... note: Hounddog's crusts can be very crispy and can scrape the roof of your mouth. I find this to be the case especially when I haven't eaten all day and I'm devouring the pizza without hesitation. note to the note: The ranch helps with the crispy crust if it's not your thing. (Guys I'm tell you... It's awesome.) Their pepperoni pizza is around $22 at the time of writing this review and packs in so many great flavors and is my family and I's go-to. The specialty pizzas are expensive at $28 but provide a very notable option as well. I personally love the Pesto Pie and the ranch works well with it too. But I'm afraid I don't get it frequently because I find just as much enjoyment out of the $22 pepperoni pizza. Their cheese pizza is also very cheesy and has its own beautiful qualities at $20. If nothing else, I hope I sold you on the ranch.

John M.

Yelp
Can't go wrong here. Beer by the pitcher, pool tables, and great pizza. I've lived in Columbus for 24 years and this is the BEST pizza in town. Local dive bar feel gives this spot a great atmosphere. So many memories coming here with friends while going to OSU.

Yelp
One of my favs and some of the best pizza in Columbus. Consistently awesome !! Great homemade ranch dressing too
google avatar

Kristin J.

Yelp
Visiting Ohio and friends took us here because we wanted wings. The pizza and wings are slapping (aka amazing). The onion rings and stuffed mushrooms are pretty good as well. Would come here again next time in town. Thanks Hounddog!
google avatar

Yelp
Being from NY and recently moving to Columbus, it's good pizza, still getting used to the square cuts in a round pizza but still a good pizza! Just wish there were a pizza and wing special instead of paying almost $50 for both
google avatar

Yelp
Great pizza crust and toppings? The middle was a bit undercooked but my teens didn't notice. Expensive for a pizza but delicious so great for a special birthday celebration.

Yelp
On my quest to try all the various pizza joints in Columbus, I found my way to Hounddogs. We got a take out pizza on a Friday night and it was ready in about 15-20 minutes. We ordered "The Russell" as well as two house side salads. The side salads were pretty good size, and we probably could have split just one (good deal for $6). The Russell comes with provolone and mozzarella cheese, chicken, bacon, scallions and a side of ranch. We ordered a large which is priced at $25.99 (one of the cheaper 'specialty' pizzas for its size). Overall, I thought the pizza was average. The crust was regular thickness, and I tend to prefer more of a thin crust so maybe that had something to do with it. The chicken was kind of dry and over cooked. They also forgot the side of homemade ranch which we didn't notice until we got home :(. When we picked up the food, I noticed the inside had some sweet vibes and it was much bigger than I was expecting. If I tried it again, I would definitely dine in. And I would also order a different pizza.
google avatar

Michaela S.

Yelp
Stopped into Hounddog's for the first time (I've had their takeout before). We were seated right away and had a super nice and attentive server. The decor is perfect for a pizza joint, and gives you lots to look at. The pizza is a little pricey, but definetly will last multiple meals. The pesto pizza could have used a little more pesto, but the breakfast pizza was perfect. Overall, a great place to stop in for a bite!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
The pizza is sooo good! We had pepperoni and pineapple, a hawaiian pizza and a bacon and onion pizza on the hounddog crust. We also had the potato skins. We're from out of town, and with a student on campus, we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Leslie M.

Yelp
Staff is friendly, they don't bother you too much while you're trying to eat which I appreciate. They have games you can play near the bar which is nice. It is always clean and the food is good.
google avatar

Trevor F.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere, nice service, and great pizza. I was impressed at how much I enjoyed this pizza! Being from out of town, I was looking for something different than home and this pizza hit the spot. The little ones weren't particularly fans but i the cheese bread was their jam.

Yelp
Let me set the scene, the boys are dazed from a night of drinking and staying up until 4a, at precisely 10:15a the alarms rattle everyone: It's time to go get HoundDog's meatball sub. Myself early in the meatball sub endeavors, was worrisome as I was unsure whether my palate would be as refined as the meatball connoisseurs that sit to my left and right. Upon arriving to the eatery, we were met with the HoundDog mobile, the iconic piece of art that would signify the start to a never ending journey to find the best meatball sub. Seated promptly in a dim lit booth under a mural of caricatures they some may say represent the group I sat with. The boys engaged in banter as to how we would order the 7 meatball subs we were about to consume. Some suggested we repeat same order, others said we shall get the waiters opinion only to negate the suggestion with a prompt "1 meatball sub, please." The waiter enjoyed the tomfoolery, but was faced with a question she may never have answered: Why would these 7 boys come to this iconic pizza joint to only order 7 meatballs subs? The banter continued for approximately 30 minutes which some would be disappointed in the time waited, but what can a establishment do when 7 meatball subs are ordered, probably more that have been ordered in the past year. Visually, the meatball sub was average, and the boys were skeptical only for one to take his first bite leading to a rather surprising cheese pull. The first bite was eye opening, reminding me of simpler times. Times where summers were spent laying and dreaming about meatball subs, with not a single care in the world. Despite this memory, I continued to devour the luke warm sub. The meat to bread ratio could be summed up as average, the sauce made the sandwich, the cheese added some flavor, the meatballs were satisfactory. Overall, the sub was slightly above average, but I know better awaits me elsewhere. As a developing meatball connoisseur, I was satisfied, but not overjoyed. The environment conducive to chopping it up with the boys made the experience much more enjoyable. For the rest of my meatball reviews they will end in the following: Ratings Meatball sub: 6.75/10 Environment: 9/10 Service: 8/10 Time Waiting: 2/10

Yelp
Good service Open later on Saturday Delicious pizza I definitely would recommend Quality toppings
google avatar

Yelp
My new favorite place!! Homey dive bar feel with plenty of tvs, beer/food options, and pool tables. Their pizza is absolutely delicious. We get the hand tossed thick crust. Couple different sauce options to choose from too.

Yelp
This old school joint still churns out some tasty pizza. We decided to take the kiddo for her inaugural visit and it was a hit for sure. Our server did a good job, he mentioned at the end that it was his second day, awww. Kiddo loved the quirky look of the place, husband and I were telling her our names were scratched into the wall somewhere there. It's more pricey than I recall but isn't that everything now? More of a special occasion type of deal but I'm sure we'll be back at some point.

Brandon B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great pizza, a little pricey but worth it. Domestic drafts were $3.50 which made the place even better.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
This place is consistently delicious! I'm from New York and I think it's been hard to find good wings here in Ohio but this place does not disappoint! Everything is very reasonably priced. I love having leftovers and taking them to work the next day. 5 stars doesn't do this place justice.
google avatar

Khari J. S.

Yelp
Well, the New Yorker in me was thirsting for pizza. A quick check of Yelp and a few neighbors guided me to try hound dogs pizza. Let me start with the decor. I was quite taken with the contemporary style and obviously many others were also as there was hardly a empty table or chair for that matter. I called in my order for a meat lovers pizza, minus the salami. Opting for extra bacon instead, and a heaping helping of onions, which had just been removed from the oven as i arrived, delighting my nasal senses. Upon arriving back at the apartment, i hurrily dove into the box and gorged on numerous slices, proving that the neighbors had good taste in pizza, not New York or Chicago style or quality, yet delicious. I neglected to take photos, but noted that many excellent photos have been added to this page of their pizzas.

Yelp
If you are looking for pizza restaurant that doesn't skimp on toppings , this is the place for you . Im from South Carolina and I flew to Columbus Ohio for my nephews wedding. I asked one of the guest at the weeding for the best pizza joint in Columbus and he recommended Hounddog's and I must say this pizza place tops any pizza place we have In our state. Two thumbs up
google avatar

Yelp
Close at midnight? Wtheck. Never in my wildest dreams that were made upon pizza crust after smokin Joe's pizza crust ...... ? Doesn't make sense to the OG's.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The pizza is the best in Columbus... specially the BBQ chicken pizza, YUM! I've been here about a handful of times but went here after my college graduation & our server was so wonderful!! I wish I could remember her name. She made sure to congratulate me several times and was so nice to the group I was with. We got lasagna bites (the best appetizer on the menu), pretzel bites and nachos... all delicious. We then got a medium BBQ chicken & medium pepperoni, both AMAZING! The garlic crust, so good! The atmosphere in great, at night they have the bar side open which is even cooler, with pool tables & such. The walls are decorated really cool. I've had a great experience every time I go & the food never disappoints! A staple in the Columbus area !!
google avatar

Yelp
Hounddog's is one of my go-to pizza places in Columbus. Lived pretty close by while I was a student at OSU and I had to stop by when I was in town for a business trip. The service is great, and the prices are pretty steep. But the good pizza makes it worth the price. I ordered the Supreme Dog pizza. It came out pretty greasy, which is why I'm going down to 4 stars. Not sure if the issue is specific to the supreme pizza or if it's a common theme with the menu. Nonetheless the pizza is delicious and the crust is thick, flavorful, and the best part of the pizza. The toppings were plentiful and good. Overall, a great pizza joint, and I'll be back whenever I'm back in Columbus.

Lauren D.

Yelp
Food is great but every time I go the world's rudest college students are working there. I've always been nice recognizing they are young and under pressure, but it's been a consistent problem, even with management.
google avatar

Kerri T.

Yelp
Yummy pizza! The crust was good, just thicker than we were used to. We ordered a 16 inch and a 12 inch for four people (two hungry teen boys) and had 4 pieces left. We also enjoyed the pretzel bites and buffalo chicken balls.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
The pizza crust was burnt. It took forever for the bill to come. They didn't offer to take money off the bill. I will not be back.
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
When in Columbus for any reason I try to stop at Hounddog's. I love the pizza, the art on the walls, the area it's in, and the servers. Never really had a bad time here.
google avatar

Yelp
The pizza was best we've eaten in forever. Good service, selection and the pool tables are great entertainment!

Yelp
When I was ordering I was asked which crust I wanted. Having never had the Señor Dog pizza, I chose the "Hounddog". The guy on the other end then said something under his breath like he likes the other crust better, as it comes with butter. I froze like a deer in headlights. What do I do now, I asked myself. Not sure what to do, I stayed the course. It annoys me there is only a $2-$3 price difference between small and large (I think it's $25,99 for the small and $28.99 for the large Señor Dog pizza), but I didn't make a stink and I just went ahead and ordered the large. Maybe my dog will eat the leftovers. The atmosphere invoked feelings of the dark lit and dark stained woods themed taverns Victorian Village seems to have so many of. The service was okay. Took a little while to get my pizza (even though it was finished and sitting on the rack), as the guy working the counter said he didn't have authorization to collect what I owed. I thought that was weird. Eventually one of the people, who was stocking, cashed me out. As for the pizza, meh. The Taco Bell Mexican Pizza is better.

Yelp
We visited here for a quick dinner before seeing a band. The ambiance is fun & lively. They have a full bar with several different beers on tap. Although, I did see pizzas which looked excellent, we ordered subs. I got the Turkey pesto blt. It was so good! The sub bread was soft, the Turkey and pesto together were a great combination. The sandwich was so big I couldn't eat it all. They are definitely shareable. Our service was quick & efficient. I wanna go back soon & try their pizza!
