Houndstooth Coffee Review - Downtown Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"There are several locations of the coffee shop Houndstooth in Austin (and a few in Dallas). The one downtown is in the base of the Frost Bank Tower – it’s so tucked in you could easily miss it walking by. But people downtown know it’s there, and during peak hours it can get pretty busy and loud, so it’s not ideal for a long work session. They're also totally unafraid to blast old-school hip hop. There are pastries, lots of tea options, and Tacodeli tacos. Most importantly, you'll find that Houndstooth serves some of the best coffee you’ll find not just downtown, but in all of Austin. There's also wine and beer for when you need to chill out after drinking coffee all day." - Raphael Brion

Google
The last minute decision to walk to the place was definitely a good one. The coffee and treats were delicious and the staff were a delight. They were super friendly and I dare say bubbly. They asked a couple of extra questions to make sure our order was to our liking and they even made suggestions that worked out well. I definitely like this place and plan to go back for a breakfast taco!

Google
Cute coffee shop with delicious coffee! Got a honey latte and the espresso was so smooth and the milk steamed to velvet perfection. The atmosphere was wonderful too, definitely a great place to sit and work or study. Will be back!

Google
Smooth, complex flavor without being acidic or astringent. Absolutely delicious almond croissant - flaky on the outside, pillowy soft on the inside, not overly sweet and no fake Amaretto flavoring. They also serve brewed chinese teas with the pot! (Not Gung-Fu style but still very good).

My husband and I read great reviews and looked at photos and decided to try this place today. When we walked in, the place was barely lit. So dark it took a minute for my eyes to adjust given how sunny it was outside. It was almost silent inside. There was a hint of background music, but even whispering to my husband felt like yelling. The room was full of people on laptops, so we thought maybe we just walked in at a weird time. We proceeded to look at the menu where the barista asked what we would like. I asked if they made their syrups in house or what brand they used and he said “I think 1883.” Not sure why he wasn’t aware. I ordered an iced vanilla matcha and my husband ordered a hot vanilla latte. The girl who was helping the barista seemed very confused since it seemed the barista took our order in the wrong spot. She then went to help him and made my matcha. I watched her barely whisk it and it had clumps everywhere. She then never handed me my drink, but left it sitting beside her without a lid. I had to ask where the lids were to which she cordially replied on the back wall and pointed. My husband’s “latte” was way more cappuccino milk with way too much foam on top. We had planned on working from there all day, but couldn’t get out of there fast enough. We left and immediately dumped our drinks and went somewhere else. Overall, the quality of drinks wasn’t good, the atmosphere was very resistible, and the service was medium (the barista was nicer, the girl checking us out was not friendly). Not trying to just be someone who just leaves a bad review, but as a coffee shop owner, I would want to know if someone had this type of experience in my cafe.

Google
This is my go to Houndstooth location of all houndstooth’s in Dallas. The way I usually judge a coffee shop is by their house coffee(medium) and houndstooth’s Foxtrot just does the job consistently. This is what I usually get and somehow it’s very consistent at Henderson location, it always has the slight sour end which is the distinct taste of their medium roast. At some other location’s like on Sylvan Ave, it can fluctuate. Other than the regular house coffee, their Flat White is pretty epic!!! Highly recommend! The balance of expresso to milk is just perfect. Additionally, they have tacos from Taco Deli and some nice offerings like Muffins and croissants from local shop. The vibe here is also a pretty chill one. I’d recommend a visit to anyone in this area.

Google
Sweet coffee shop that gives you a taste of Austin! Although indoor seating is closed due to covid, there’s a cool outdoor setup with picnic tables. Try an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. For Tesla drivers, there’s a lot of superchargers right next to the cafe.

Google
I actually deliver tacos from Tacodeli in the mornings to this place. Alot of the coffee shops I deliver to offer me a coffee but this is the Absolute favorite coffee I have found. The reg coffee and the Americano are sooooo good. I would def go the 40 min just from home to chill there and grab some coffee. Super sweet staff. Laid bad but upscale hippy vibe (IMO). Love it. Y'all keep up the great work!!

Google
The folks who work here are awesome and the coffee is stellar. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their pour overs and iced lattes. They also occasionally serve breakfast tacos and some excellent pastries. They roast coffee locally in Dallas so you are shopping local and if you buy a bag of beans, once you run out you can bring the bag back to get 10% off another bag and they recycle the bag you turn in. I’m so happy they are only a couple of blocks from where I work.

Maxine M.

Yelp
Great place to get work done. The environment is quiet but not silent, people are friendly, bathrooms are clean, and coffee is A+. I got a cold brew, and it was perfect. I love their beans, and will definitely come back to try more.

Yelp
Staff is super friendly & helpful. Being honest not much of a coffee drinker but the espresso was a little bitter for my taste. The main attraction is the taco deli breakfast tacos in my opinion but be warned, houndstooth will up charge you!! IE papas, egg & cheese at the restaurant is only 2.75ish but at houndstooth it will cost you 5.50ish. I understand they have to make a little money for the service but up charging 2x is unreasonable.

Gina L.

Yelp
cute spot but the cus service is not up to part at all as well as the drinks the latte leaves an after taste not warm and creamy
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
Coffee julep was so refreshing and good! It was a shaken iced coffee and unsure if it was supposed to have minty flavor. I didn't taste any. It was still good though and refreshing during this awful heat
google avatar

Madeline F.

Yelp
The baristas were really nice and the coffee was good! The dark lighting made the vibes feel like a hole in the wall neighborhood place where they would quickly know your order and name which I liked a lot. $8 for the regular size seemed a little much to me but was still really good. They make their own syrups from scratch which I really appreciated too!

Yelp
Good coffee with a super cool vibe for ambiance. Great outdoor space for studying and working. Service was social and effective.

Yelp
Heard great things about this coffee shop and they didn't disappoint. Cozy and calm atmosphere. The staff were nice and very knowledgeable. Plenty of space and seating to work or read. I had an iced vanilla latte with a butter croissant. Both were very delicious. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
I feel like the reviews below are misleading......The drip coffee I got was good but every coffee shop needs amble plugs for laptop users. As I sit here, I counted 8 people using a laptop yet there's only one outlet in the entire shop - at worst in a corner?? Jeeze......Not a good place if you're working out of office or your home. This is probably a more ideal place for talking, not working. I did find it to be extremely cold inside too. There are no sugar free options for those looking to cut back in the new year. I had to resort to straight black coffee
google avatar

Yelp
Little hole in the wall coffee shop. Came here for coffee with the wife because I saw they did it right in the pics by serving their doppio with sparkling water. Most coffee shops in the area don't and they want you to buy a bottle of sparkling water,.... no no no guys, the proper way to serve a doppio is with sparkling water to clear the palate. I get tickled when I ask the cashier at a coffee shop for a doppio and they don't know what it is, it happens more than you think. My latte was good, doppio was good and we got this refreshing mint coffee drink that was good too. The service was good too. Ty guys, till next time. IG: kaliking806 #ViBN

Yelp
I spent a lot of time in coffee shops I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the Houndstooth Coffee. I pass by this location all the time. I didn't realize the interior was this large. There were plenty of people working and just enjoying the atmosphere. The menu is short and sweet. I ordered a vanilla latte, with oat milk. It was very delicious. I wanted a croissant, but they didn't have any which I was surprised by because it was very early in the morning. They also have an outdoor patio which is snug but also very cool. overall, this is a nice neighborhood coffee shop. The people their seemed to be locals and had a relationship with the cashier and barista.

Yelp
Reddit said this place was in the top 3 coffee shops in Dallas. Do better Dallas. The space is great for working. Service is nice. Parking is a bit confusing. But the coffee was outright terrible. I got a flat white and the wife got a mocha. Both were bad.

Amber M.

Yelp
I'm giving a 4 star with a consumer warning. Because the drink was really freaking good. Coffee is great. 10/10 recommend BUT do NOT recommend their "gluten free" items. They are in a shared display case with gluten items and laying on top of each other. There is no possible way to avoid cross contamination. The barista even mentioned that's how the bakery sends them to them. These are NOT gluten free at that point they are just made with different flours. So although I did not try the pastries. I cannot account for how they taste. But I can say do not buy these if you are gluten intolerant or celiac. And do not buy them for your gluten intolerant or celiac loved ones. Coffee is great though and a cute place to hang or have a first intro date on the patio!

Yelp
INCREDIBLE COFFEE OMG WHAT. The cappuccino was hella buss'n. Cute but a little stark interior. Barista was super talkative and kind. Felt super genuine. Great coffee spot.

Yelp
Minimalist meets industrial. Cute coffee shop with good coffee. I had an iced latte with honey. I ordered my coffee to go but it seems like a great place to get some work done!
google avatar

Dalton E.

Yelp
I'm not what you might call a coffee aficionado, but the simple cold brew was one of the best I've had. The wifi was plenty quick. However, the real standout was the music selection. No need for headphones here.
google avatar

Yelp
I really appreciate houndstooth. A lot of my friend avoid 3rd wave or craft coffee spots because they can be a little pretentious or rude if you try to modify your order. Houndstooth makes coffee that can go head to head with any craft coffee bar and they're so kind every time. Maybe it's training or maybe it's culture, but the baristas always make pleasant small talk and are more than happy to modify your order. I get the iced oat cappuccino (which kind of doesn't exist but they humor me anyway ) Big fan. Thanks for being so consistently great!
google avatar

Diana V.

Yelp
The coffee here is GOOD and I mean GOOD. I got an iced oat milk latte (my go-to everywhere), and it blew my mind. Can't wait to sample more of the menu! I came on a Sunday and they have breakfast tacos from Taco Deli!! I really only come to coffee shops to study, and for this reason I'm knocking a star. There aren't a lot of plugs, and none of the chairs have backs to them. HOWEVER, if you want to come here to chill with a friend or have a date, it's perfect! Will definitely be back for coffee, but probably not to study!
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
I'm from Chicago and this was my first time at HC. Best iced cappuccino I've ever had... anywhere!! Great staff too : )
google avatar

Justine H.

Yelp
The cafe has a very low key vibe, it's cozy and has an outdoor seating area as well. They are dog friendly and have a little store in the back for their merch. The barista were very friendly and willing to accommodating. They are willing to chat with you and they remember the regulars well. If you're in the area and want to try out a new coffee place come and visit!
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
I've been coming to a few of the houndstooth locations over the years, but I love the atmosphere of this one here off henderson! The coffee is always delicious, the staff is always super nice, and the pastries that they have over the weekend are so good! My husband and I will definitely be back
google avatar

Diana E.

Yelp
Simple menu. The iced oat milk latte is delicious and they use that good chewing ice. The best part of going to any of the Houndstooth locations is the staff. I've had a pleasant experience at every single one. They are always super kind and make buying a coffee a nice experience.
google avatar

Nina K.

Yelp
VEGAN OPTIONS - Yes. Ordered a mocha and a cappuccino, both with oat milk. I would definitely return in the future because the consistency of my drinks were on point and it's a solid choice if I'm the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Literally just got some coffee here took 2 sips and threw it out! Terrible! It was basically watered down coffee filled with sonic ice!
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Very impressed with the two people running the place. There was never a break in the line of people coming in yet the wait times were so low. They had a seasonal syrup called spooky spice so I got that in a latte and it was superb. This would be go to coffee shop (if I lived in Dallas)
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, nice little shop. Kind of in a wonky area and inside seating is lacking. The outside sitting is cute but not comfy if you're going to stay a while.
google avatar

Yu-kwong C.

Yelp
This is a down-to-earth, no non-sense coffee shop in uptown Dallas. Don't be tricked by the ordinary looking storefront. The interior gives you a different feel. It's welcoming, warm, and pleasant. In the center are four six-seat wooden community tables. A few stand-alone lone tables on a raised platform on the left side near the entrance. If you like a street view, you can sit at the patio facing Henderson and McMillan Street. I ordered a regular latte with 2% milk. Interestingly, they didn't have 2%. But the barista said he could magically turn 1% and 100% full milk into 2%. He looked professional, so I trusted his words. The latte turned out to be with exactly 2% milk. Unbelievable! Seriously, it was creamy, smooth, and foamy. They also have soy and almond milk. I may try that next time. I'm still scratching my head to understand the intriguing statement "The pattern of coffee and people" on the blank white wall. Maybe if I get enough coffee, I can crack the code. All the patrons were well disciplined and focused on what they were interested in. It's nice place to get some work done or just relax. Just a couple of notes for people planning to stay long. I see only a few power outlets. So if you plan to stay long and need power for your laptop or other electronic devices, you need to be sitting close to those strategic spots. Also, the stools don't have back support, so beware of potential back ache :(

Yelp
The warm Southern hospitality was lacking (like a LOT) sad to say I was not feeling this location at all. It all starts with a warm welcome SPECIALLY if you tell them that this is our FIRST time here! Well we kept it cool and placed our order. We ordered 3 breakfast tacos (egg/cheese/papa) and the barista looked at us crazy while saying, " can I take your drink order first?" We explained to her that we like to eat first then cone back and order our drinks. It was the oddest thing she'd heard all day ( lol ) bc she gave us a look. Furthermore, there was a lot of campers working on their laptops and school books so we cornered ourselves by the single table at the back (looks like a barstool) it was short and tiny but we are our tacos. To make things further more unpleasant and uncomfortable, on my first bite I bit an avocado nut that was inside my breakfast taco (yikes!!!) honestly I think I need a good energy cleanse Bc this Dallas Trip has been the WORST! We didn't make a big deal out of it as we had already had a ripple effect while being here. Secondly, the breakfast tacos have potato purée (mashed not traditional breakfast potatoes). Being in the south, we figured it would be the country breakfast potatoes but it was just ok, Taco Cabana serves a more traditional breakfast taco than what we experienced. After a table cleared up, we were able to finish our breakfast tacos by the bar facing the side of the street and looking into a patio style size outdoors patio. Two other people sat by our window (bleachers) and it felt like we were straight up intruding at them bc it felt like they were bothered at my pictures (perhaps thinking I was taking the pics of them). It was like we were in an aquarium looking out thru the glass and they were giving us strange vibes. It's plain too small bc from the looks of it they have a lot of people coming in and out and a lot of collage students camping in. The latte was delicious and their fried cake donuts were bomb too. However, that did not make up for the other inconvenient moments. The one at Central Expressway in Mid Cities is better and nicer. Henderson still needs a lot of cleaning up to do. The alley behind this place reminded me of the old side of San Clemente in California (not a good thing).
google avatar

Yelp
Rude staff. Mediocre coffee. Nice design, but not enough to make up for their people issues. Will avoid this place in the future. Do better.
google avatar

Yelp
Lowkey feel on the inside. The staff is incredibly friendly and warm. I enjoyed their drip coffee a lot. The photos of the neighborhood dogs on the wall were awesome.

Yelp
I've been patiently waiting for this place to open up so I'd have a new writing hole. I'm at 2 Moderna jabs plus a month, so rediscovering the coffee shop experience has been a great joy. Toasted, just around the corner from these guys, has been a great spot to hang out in. Comfy seating, plenty of outlets, friendly staff. I wear my mask when approaching the counter or sitting near a masked person just so others don't have to guess if I'm vaxxed or consuming science-hostile media. There's nothing wrong with the staff at Houndstooth - they seem perfectly friendly. But they're struggling to work with guidelines - and furnishings - that aren't conducive to a pleasant in-shop experience. My heart sank a little when I saw that it was kind of a dark cave with only stools to sit on. It sank more when I saw that there was only one outlet, near a high shelf. When I went to move a taller stool close to the plug-in, I heard "Sir. Sir, we ask that guests don't move the chairs." Got it. Drink your coffee and get the F out. I did the latter, but I wasn't in the mood to drink their cappuccino now, so I can't tell you how it tasted. I'm not going to drop a low-star bomb on them because I think everybody deserves to be cut some slack in this confusing new reality. But my experience there really blew, and I don't see myself going back until they figure out whether they actually want humans inside their building.

Yelp
Houndstooth coffee was a great experience for me and was a good pick-me-up for my afternoon. If I had more time, I would have stuck around the area.

Joshua W.

Yelp
The coffee at Houndstooth was excellent! My wife got an Arnold Palmer (cold brew and lemon concentrate with some extra flavors) and it was tremendous! I had an iced coffee. The flavor of the beans was incredible! Very sparkly and structured. I would definitely recommend going here!
google avatar

G G.

Yelp
Pros: Engaging, attentive, and pleasant staff. Cons: Order a tea, pay $5. There is one outlet in a corner that comfortably seats 3 people on stools pointed at a wall. The rest of the 40 ish seats do not have access to an outlet to plug your laptop into. Must be by design -- workers are not encouraged to spend time here.
google avatar

Yelp
My new favorite place for coffee in this area! So, what makes them any different or stand out from their rival down the street, Mudsmith? First of, not only is their coffee better, they have different roasts that you can choose from everyday. This is the very first for me. Usually you don't get any option when it comes to what kind of roast, or if you do, it's either light or dark roast, and that's it. Not this place. They usually offer about 3 different roasts each day. When it comes to coffee shops (Starbucks don't count), I look at 3 things: the quality of the coffee, the latte art/service (if they don't offer latte art, it's a minus for service in my book lol), and the atmosphere (is it a good spot for people watching or not?). This place got 2.5 out of 3 for me. Their service is excellent. Latte art is nice. They have 2 separate small patio seating areas. Their side patio is set up interestingly with a long counter facing the street and some stools, then a bleacher type seating. I just wish they have more trees, a little green and flowers wouldn't hurt lol.

Emitom H.

Yelp
I visited Houndstooth to get some work done before getting a haircut nearby. When I walked in the barista was very friendly and nice to chat with. The drink menu was pretty basic, but I enjoyed my latte. Unfortunately my computer was low on battery and there were limited outlets in the shop. Luckily, a spot near an outlet opened up soon after I order, but I did have to encounter a large, dead bug when plugging in my charger. The shop was quiet enough for me to focus, but loud enough that it was okay for me to chat when I needed to take a phone call. Overall, Houndstooth is an enjoyable place to drink, work, and relax, but charge up your computer beforehand if you plan to use it.

Reena G.

Yelp
Great coffee in a great location. I've been here a few times. This location is small and cute. There are days were it is super busy and then days that is super calm. The coffee is great with almond milk. It doesn't take bitter. The coffee is smooth. We've enjoyed just drinking our coffee here and catching up with friends. Definitely my go to whenever we're in the area. The Baristas are super nice too.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
Yikes. I was searching for a coffee spot when I saw the reviews for this place and decided to drive out to try it. Ordered a cold brew...but it tasted like water with a hint of coffee. Should have just gone to Dunkin...
google avatar

ViJay K.

Yelp
I have an appreciation for Houndstooth. Modern coffee shop with friendly baristas and local treats. The pastries are huge and something to appreciate. It didn't take long for our order to be made. The seating is ample and people watching is always fun. I suggest to swing in for work or play.
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
I've been to Houndstooth several times now and have tried different lattes each time. Each has been okay but just not great. Their coffee and espresso is bitter, lacking a nice, smooth sip. As others have noted, their prices are not budget friendly. For a 12 oz latte with alternative milk, you're paying about $7. I'd be fine with the cost if I felt the quality and service were worth it--but I just don't think either are. There are lots of coffee spots in the Lower Greenville area, so it doesn't help that this spot has healthy competition. For a similar, quick pick up coffee location minus crazy parking, LDU is a much more reliable bet. Similar in price, but you're also getting a quality cup and excellent service. Every time I visit Houndstooth, there's always folks camped out on laptops like Starbucks. They're generous with free Wi-Fi and seem to welcome the work-and-sip atmosphere. As an alternative to Starbucks, Houndstooth will suffice for a working environment. However for a coffee or caffeine hit, there are better options.

Yelp
I've been to houndstooth a few times since moving to dallas and it has become my go to spot to pick up beans to brew cold brew at home. i've also tried several of their drinks and been quite impressed. great service!
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
The coffee was very good, and the staff was friendly and helpful. They have a lot of interesting beans for purchase as well. They also have a wide variety of delicious breakfast tacos available, including traditional, vegetarian, and vegan options, which I appreciated. It is a large airy space with a nice patio area. I love that they have a bag recycling program! We are not local so sadly cannot take advantage, but I love to see it.
google avatar

Zain K.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, great service, and nice layout, but... (1) Few outlets (2) Uncomfortable seating (simple wood stools) (3) No artificial sweetener (4) Americano a little pricey at $3.70
google avatar

Yelp
Okay, maybe it's partly because I don't live in Texas anymore, but I LOVE visiting Houndstooth Coffee. First, and most importantly, their coffee is great. But second, it's just so cute with the little Texas shapes on the mugs. And they always have such beautiful interiors. My family and I visited this Houndstooth location around the Christmas holiday this year and were excited to see that they had a Christmas special (who doesn't want some extra special, holiday-themed latte art). We really enjoyed taking a break from our holiday errands to enjoy a cup of coffee each at this great coffeeshop. (My little sister is 11 and doesn't think their hot chocolate is sweet enough. I disagree, but in case anyone has a kid with a sweet tooth, I thought I'd post this here.)
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
To be fair, in order to write a better review, I'd have to go back. But I don't want to. The interior is nice and everything screams that it wants to be a great coffee shop. But I'm not convinced. The one chance I gave this place, I got the Japanese iced coffee. With tax and tip, the total came to $6. For coffee that's brewed with hot water and poured over ice, that just felt way too overpriced. (And this is coming from someone who's lived in LA. Am I not allowed to expect better prices from Dallas?) Sometimes I don't mind paying more for a good study spot. Unfortunately in this aspect, too, it fell short. The space is very small and not the quietest. It's great for conversation, but I think next time I'll find a place that doesn't terrorize my wallet for those good long conversations.

Derian P.

Yelp
Extremely rude staff. It was a burden for them to take my order I felt like. Very cute place, decent coffee, unpleasant staff.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
This is a solid coffeeshop. One of my friends recommended Houndstooth to me after visiting there the previous week. Houndstooth is tucked into a larger building, across the street from Barcadia. It is easy to miss if you don't know what you are looking for. Luckily, I did, so I found it. I ordered a vanilla cappuccino after explaining to the barista what I was looking for. He was extremely friendly and pointed me in the right direction. When my cappuccino arrived, I was surprised to see latte art. The heart in the milk foam was such a cool touch. Coming in just below $5, this is a tad pricey. But, the quality is definitely top notch. As I have said in numerous other reviews, I would much rather pay more to support local. This is a great find, and I fully intend to come here more often! Thanks Houndstooth for the delicious caffeinated beverage!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Unfortunately Houndstooth doesn't serve macchiato's so I settled for a vanilla latte. While the shop was very welcoming, it didn't rank high on my list. I prefer something cozier - something homier. Below are my personal ratings. Coffee 5/10 Wifi 4/10 Seating 8/10 Parking 2/10 Vibe 4/10
google avatar

Kc M.

Yelp
I went in on a Friday morning and although it was pretty busy, parking was not hard to find. They have plenty of seating inside, complimentary wifi, but not a ton of outlets. As an avid tea drinker I did not have high expectations for the tea selection coming into a shop that specializes in coffee, however this place surprised me. The tea I will say is a bit pricier than most, but they brew it in a tea pot so you get more than just a standard 8 oz cup. The earl grey was very good, and they had no problem serving with my little bit of almond milk on the side. They also sell Taco Deli tacos which is a huge plus in my book! I would definitely stop by again.

Yelp
All you need to know about this place is that it calls itself Houndstooth but has a Herringbone pattern splashed all over its walls and decor, both inside and out. There's a difference, guys. If you're gonna be pretentious you gotta get the details right. The coffee's just ok.
