Villa des Houx

"Generous, traditional cuisine that fosters close ties with the terroir: rissole with two types of salmon; Atlantic cod and black lemon… The decor is classic, both inside and on the terrace." - Michelin Inspector

This was our first visit to La Villa Des Houx. An interesting and unusual building where successive generations of the same family have adapted and converted an old 19th century Gendarmerie. Rooms are large and comfortable and traditional in style. We travel regularly around France ,invariably staying in Logis de France, and greatly prefer a slightly old fashioned atmosphere to the more soulless modern conversions. We slept like logs on the comfortable beds.. ||||An outstanding dinner was preceded by aperitifs in the delightful and well tended garden. The dining room was full of happy French diners! We chose the 34 euro menu and every course was delicious. We could fault neither the content nor the friendly and efficient service, Breakfast too was excellent and well priced. What more could we want ? Maybe our final bill was very slightly higher than for other comparable logis in the region where one can sometimes benefit from the reduction offered by a demi-pension tariff but this would not stop us returning for another visit.

We had an overnighter here on our way to our house. What a lovely find. Aumale itself is pretty and I had a lovely walk along the river with my dog. The hotel is really nice with good bathrooms and the gardens are delightful. We had a delicious meal in the evening on the terrace and the buffet breakfast was pretty good too. It was a lovely overnight stay and I am sure we will be back

Quiet location - at least on a Sunday evening. Rooms comfortable and bathrooms very modern and good. Restaurant food quality, choice and service good, especially as there was a large party eating at the same time. Tables were found for everybody that wanted them outside as nice weather. Private gated parking. Breakfast a little disappointing except for the bread which was excellent. Lovely gardens.

If you want to go back 50 years in time, don't miss this place. An obedient crew of 6 servants stands ready to serve your dishes during 'le diner'. The menus remind you of Escoffier discovered in a French village. The foie gras was superbe as well as the breakfast. Dishes with cailles and nougat really deserve a boost. The spacious room was never touched by modern ideas about interior design. Price quality medium.

We stayed here last month for an overnight. It is a lovely building with a pretty garden. At first glance the dinner menu looked limited with only two choices for each course. However between us we had all the dishes and it was a very good dinner and excellent value at 17 euros. I think it very likely we will return.

As usual we had not booked in advance and when we arrived we were told that it was all full. ||||It could not be true but after the pandemic so many places could not get enough staff so easier to say "full" ||||We booked for the following night and had a room overlooking the pretty garden. But only one chair in room!||||Husband fell off his bike and wanted a bath to easy the back soreness so we moved to a room overlooking the back bits of the hotel so no garden and a child hitting tennis balls at the walls !!||||Not a well lit room but bath was Heaven!||||Staff are correct but no conversation and my French is reasonable.||||Food good wine quite expensive||||May return as there are good cycle rides

Lovely ancient building in a small city with well preserved medieval buildings, delicious food, something for all purses: From the smallest menu to the gourmet menu, fresh, delicious and well presented.

Instead of bombing down the A26- A1 autoroutes to Paris, take the quieter A16 towards Abbeville, then leave it and have a break. Drive through the easternmost edges of Normandy and pick up the D29 for Aumale. Aumale is in Haute-Normandie, metres from the boundary with Picardie, but in character it is full-on Normandaise. It's scarcely credible that Normandy lovers can have their fix this far inland, but it's true! The Villa des Houx (Holly Mansion) is a beautifully restored old Norman house, all timbered frames, with 22 rooms at delightfully low prices, and a Logis de France recommended restaurant. It's the ideal place to break to journey to Paris. Wander about the 5K sq.m. gardens, or stroll up to the old village. The restaurant will not disappoint you, and you can expect the typical cuisine of Normandy - perhaps a little rich for some tastes with abundant cream, cider and calvados featuring in many dishes. There's a lovely little pond with seats, in the gardens, where Dick used to like to sit and ponder. No pun intended! http://www.qype.co.uk/lists/317758-John-Richard-Hurst
