A Columbia fixture since 1981, House of Chow blends longtime crowd-pleasers with recipes tied to China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Repeatedly recognized by Inside Columbia and Feast Magazine, it’s the city’s classic sit-down Chinese experience with Peking duck and a full bar.

We love eating here! They have wonderful servers, a clean and tidy environment and their food is always fresh and delicious. The prices are superb for such a nice place and it's perfect for date night with my Fiancé. Please tip when you eat here to show your appreciation, they really deserve it. Thank you, House of Chow on Broadway, employees!

Google
Got the Peking duck to go. It was about $56 but it was worth it!! It was good with the pancake that comes with it. They didn’t skimp out on the food they gave a large amount of soup with the leftover duck and extra white rice on the side as well. I would definitely get it again!

Google
first impression, the decor of this place looks very good and seems to be more upscale then your regular chinese restaurant. we ordered szechuan wontons as an app, szechuan beef and house of chow beef as our mains, the wontons were great, same with the beef although we felt that the portion of beef could have been bigger. the dishes were very good though, and we appreciated the free refills of rice. the staff were very friendly and we loved the bowl of fortune cookies that we could grab on our way out!

I always loved coming here with friends—the food was just so good. My go-to dishes were the Sesame Chicken and Ma Po Tofu with Pork. Totally hit the spot every time. I kept wanting to come back for more.

Google
This WAS my favorite place. This time we had one dish, beef and broccoli, came out cold. I ordered sweet sour chicken and it was like warm. In the past our food was always served hot. Is this due to new ownership?

Google
House of Chow is a must try spot in Columbia. The atmosphere is great, and the employees were a delight. We stopped in about 40 minutes before the kitchen closed and an hour before the restaurant closed. Even with the late visit, every employee welcomed us in! The seating and ambiance were spot on and made for a nice experience. The general tso chicken is amazing and a must try. The prices are spot on for what you get. This is an overall great experience, and I'd definitely return.

Google
They have a large menu that has both American and traditional Chinese items. It was odd that one of the dishes did not come with any rice. This would not have been noticeable if the dish was not overly salty. The customer service was pretty much nonexistent for the entire meal. The staff was not rude, but they did not come off as friendly either.

Google
One of the best Chinese options in Columbia. Higher end prices, but the food reflects it. It is not your typical $5.95 lunch combo place. Fair warning, the service was abysmal at best, but the food was worth putting up for it. The egg drop soup was outstanding and had great well developed flavor. I'll be back as long as I don't get the same server.

Yelp
Came in tonight it seemed like a chore for the lady at the front desk to get up to seat us. Edamame was ok for an appetizer but the egg rolls were bland and soft and soggy. Sweet and sour chicken was ok but there was only 2 small pieces of green pepper included in it. Black pepper sizzling beef was fairly tasty as was the chicken egg foo young. We had to ask for rice and it came out cold and lumpy. Service was ok but nothing to brag about. I feel for the prices they charge it fell short of expectations.

Yelp
New owners and still consistently my "go to" Chinese restaurant in Columbia. The food is well prepared and the legacy of a friendly service established by Amy in the late 1970s continues until today. Yes, I have enjoyed it for nearly 50 years. Moreover, the cleanliness and ambience of the restaurant always puts a smile on my face and a feeling of quality combined with healthy practices in the kitchen apparent. If you're looking for the Americanized versions of Chinese food, you will find it here, accompanied by traditional dishes prepared fresh and well by their attentive staff.

Yelp
Nice sit down restaurant for Chinese. Huge menu. Fast service. We like a lot of dishes and others, like lo mein, are a little on the bland side. Still like this place. Deserves 3.5 stars.
google avatar

Dee W.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this meal. Had spicy seafood soup, lo mein with gluten free noodles and egg fu yung. Crab rangoon and egg roll were good. Spicy soup had a lot of chili seasoning but not too spicy. Egg fu yung had a lot of ginger. I would like more crab meat in my crab Rangoon but they still had good flavor.

Yelp
AWFUL SERVICE!!!!!!!!! Food was 2 hours and 15 minutes late plus they forgot one of our entrees. Absolutely ridiculous. Everyone in the restaurant was waiting at least over an hour for their food, plus the people dining also said they were sitting at the table for over 2 hours with no food.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Worst takeout I've ever had. Literally. Ribs were cold and tough as jerky. Curry chicken was also inedible. Disgusting.
google avatar

Thi G.

Yelp
We got 2 vegetarian dishes. One was the standard stir fry, nothing too special. The other was a salt and pepper deep fried tofu. I don't know what seasonings they used on this but it made me mouth numb but it wasn't spicy. Just the weirdest sensation and this dish was very dry and just not edible. I hate to leave bad reviews but please don't go here. Pricey food for what you get and most of it is not very good.

Ellene L.

Yelp
I'm unable to review the food or service but giving a 0 rating after I placed an online order, paid with my credit card, and when I went to pick up my order, found a sign on the door that they were on vacation until July 4th. Today is June 18th!!! How many other people has this happened to?!?!? Not the way to run a business! Absurd!!! I will be calling my credit card company to dispute but what an unnecessary headache! First and last time customer!

Yelp
House of chow is going to be your average decent Chinese restaurant, the food is good but isn't gonna make you surprised with its taste. For the prices and portion it is on the more pricey side, but you'll get your food quickly and it is exactly the way you would expect average mid-Missouri Chinese to taste.

Nancy W.

Yelp
I'm in LOVE with the steamed dumplings from here. They aren't as great as leftovers, but fresh = so perfect!

Amy C.

Yelp
On of my favorites in Columbia. Their hot n sour soup is absolutely amazing! They also have flowering hot teas which are just a fun experience!
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
I have ordered two go twice and ate in the restaurant twice and I swear they have different menus. If I just rated this off of my in restaurant experience I would give it a 5 starts. Love it for lunch! However take out ALWAYS disappoints! Food is different so only go into the restaurant!

Brighid R.

Yelp
The hot and sour soup is to die for I've never had better. House lo mein is delish. Service was great everyone was super friendly. Came in around 8 and it wasn't too busy so everything came out pretty fast!

Mike A.

Yelp
The very best Chinese restaurant in town. They have an actual Chinese menu, with dishes found in China. They also have the typical American-style Chinese food and it's all great stuff. They have also stopped offering delivery, and their hours are such that it's difficult to make it in to get food anymore.

Fun T.

Yelp
The worst Customer service i have ever received. The owner is extremely rude. There was also a stabbing there... dont reccomend.

Amanda F.

Yelp
Ate here before, however when my husband and I arrived the lights were on. Yet no one was inside, and we were within business hours according to the site and the door. Tried to call but the number was disconnected. Not sure if they closed die to the weather, but if you plan to do this don't leave the lights on and put a notice on the door. We chose to go to Peking Restaurant after this. Hopefully its open next time.

Yelp
I just moved to Columbia from a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. I ordered takeout from House of Chow from a delivery app. I ordered crab rangoons, veggie lo mein and walnut shrimp. It was delivered on time and hot. The whole meal with delivery and tip was $36. The rangoons were OK, nothing special. No traditional red dipping sauce. The walnut shrimp was barely edible and at $17, you would expect it to be delicious. The sauce was sickeningly sweet- granulated sugar (not exaggerating), salt and grit. The soupy sauce featured overwhelmingly breaded shrimp congealed at the bottom with over cooked broccoli, and raw walnuts (usually candied). I ate 3 shrimp and tossed it... so much gritty sugar. The worst part was the lo mein. I was eating leftovers (thinking it was better than wasting the whole thing) tonight for dinner when I detected something hard towards the last few bites. I thought it was an over-cooked vegetable... it was a metal wire, maybe from a twist tie. I know what you are thinking... this person is crazy, there is no way this is true. Just another person who is mad ranting on yelp. I am not angry, mostly concerned. I NEVER write reviews like this, but I feel it was too bad an experience not to share with the community.... I hope this place does better for the next customer, I certainly won't be returning.

Maggie J.

Yelp
I hate to be overly critical of House of Chow as I have been very happy with their menu items BUT -- re the seafood chowder: this is not, by definition, a "chowder". It appears to be an egg drop soup with small pieces of seafood in it. I was disappointed although it was delicious but WAS NOT A CHOWDER. Perhaps, in all fairness, change the soup to a chowder or change the description. Thanks, Maggie

Yelp
DO NOT HAVE FOOD DELIVERED!!!! Second time having our food delivered and both times we were missing items. This time, we got only half of our food and what we did get was ice cold from being delivered nearly two hours after ordered. Talked to manager about the huge error and he essentially told me he packed up all of our food and if we didn't get it, tough luck (and to pack sand). Delivery driver even verified that she was only given one small bag for our $130 order ... it's too bad because their food can be quite good if it is fresh (and you get what you paid for properly). Spend your money elsewhere.

Yelp
It took me a few months after moving to the area to find a good Chinese restaurant, and I found House of Chow to be the best.

Yelp
So far our best experience with Chinese food in Columbia MO. Food is heavy on the salt but that was really our only complaint. Chili wontons - the sauce they use for the chili wonton was super flavorful. The wontons themselves not balanced...too much wonton wrapper to filling ratio Mushrooms - mix of 3 kinds of mushrooms. Sauce had good flavor but very salty Rice with pork and pickled greens - good but not for the novice foodie. There's a bit of fishiness to it but still good flavor. Also a bit salty Salted pork and chili - forgot the pic but pretty good. Pork could have been more crispy

Yelp
Great quality and superb taste. I highly recommend. I'm really impressed by the General's chicken.

Yelp
I have been eating here for a long time and always loved my food but always have problems with takeout orders. They never get my order right. I ordered stir fry king bao chicken and stir fry sizzling black pepper chicken. Neither of them came stir fried, and both did not taste fresh at all. The black pepper chicken was some other order because that is not the flavor I am used to.... Or it went spoiled. Tasted kinda like rotten vegetables. Also didn't get any sauces or fortune cookies in the bag and when I tried to pay with card they kept asking me if I could do cash instead. The lady on the phone who I took my order from seemed very distracted and kept repeating the wrong order back to me and eventually said "your order is ready in 20" before I was able to say anything else. Disappointed since I have always been so happy with their food and recommend it a lot.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
Went here on a friends recommendation, not disappointed! Lived in Columbia for 10 years and somehow never knew this place existed until today. Very clean and nice inside, staff was kind and quick with food and waters. The generals chicken was great with tons of sweet and spicy sauce. I will definitely be back in the future.

Joyce R.

Yelp
Was very disappointed in this place. We used to go all the time and I loved the food! If you are in a wheelchair, only one table available and it's in the waiting area by the piano! I thought public places had to be wheelchair accessible now? We got there right when they opened so no one was sitting in the waiting area and I had to move stuff around for my husband to get up to the table! Felt really weird sitting and eating by the door. Just as we were getting ready to leave the pianist showed up....not sure how the ambience would have been with her playing pretty much AT our table! The service was very good but the food wasn't....very sad! Won't be going back!

Yelp
The staff was great! They were Friendly and the service was excellent. The Food portion was great! You can share with your date and probably a third person The flavor to the first bit of the dish was excellent! The Atmosphere and decor in the restaurant was modern. First time we visited and will be coming back with friends and family!

Yelp
I called and ordered pickup fairly close to them closing. I felt a bit uncomfortable because they needed my card payment over the phone. Apparently this is what they do when late orders come in. Despite the payment method, the food was great! I had veggie rice and lomein and general tso chicken. I recommended all three, very delicious. The prices are higher compared to my usual Chinese spot. But I still recommend this place because the food was very good!

Laurie H.

Yelp
A step or two above your average Chinese Restaurant. Moo Shu Chicken was tasty but plum sauce was average.

Nora B.

Yelp
I love HOC food but have never had as bad a service as today! they answered the phone, asked me to hold, and set the phone down for over 15 minutes where I could hear everything! screaming into the phone got no attention - while on the phone I drove there just to put in an order! the counter person wouldnt even look at me since she was the one who left me on the phone! makes me want to never order from House of Chow again
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
House of Chow is delicious and most of the menu can be gluten free!! There's quite a few vegan options as well!

Yelp
Best Springfield Cashew Chicken in Columbia! Since I'm from Joplin/Springfield Area I wanted to find a place that tasted like home. When Cashew Chicken isn't Springfield, it doesn't taste great. Love love! This is their lunch portion!

Mike W.

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars, but that's not an option. We walked in and ordered for carry out. We waited in the restaurant lobby. Our order was placed on the carry out table without any notification that it was ours and it was ready. After we'd been sitting there a good 10 minutes, a kind soul from the front desk showed us our order. We thanked her and escorted ourselves out, after we'd left a 20% tip. When we got home, we discovered that our order was not complete. When I called to complain, the owner got argumentative. He was unwilling to allow me to voice my complaint before he cut me off and explained to me why I was wrong. He could not have cared less that we were unhappy with their service. He only seemed intent to win an argument. The crux of this experience is this---House of Chow in Columbia, MO is a great place to dine. Just don't complain. If you do, you will leave unsatisfied. We wound up out over $15 because the owner can't take negative feedback. They lost a loyal and regular customer today. Too bad too, because their kitchen makes really good food. Just don't complain.

Yelp
Used to be #1 choice in Columbia, however ordered takeout 9 days ago and both entrees where off and by off I mean Bad. My family frequently dines in and the staff knows us so I called to speak with manager who wasn't there so I left a message that I'd like to be contacted. To date no response... completely unethical and disrespectful, the employee did write it down because I had to spell name out.
google avatar

Myka C.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying, the food was fire AF... the veggie lo mein noodles were top notch. I've had Chinatown noodles in NYC, Boston, and these Columbia, MO noodles were top of the top, highest of all highs. BUT... my friends and I ordered General Tso chicken and veggie spring rolls (order of 6). The chicken did not come with rice, and the spring rolls arrived and there were only 3 in the order. This was disappointing. My suggestion is that the online ordering system should NOTE that the main entrees do not come with rice, or just add it in since rice is so cheap. Other than that, the food was delicious. My meat eating friends said the chicken was all white meat and they loved it.

Weyen B.

Yelp
Food quality was OK other than they brought out cold rice and main dish for my wife and myself. Seemed put off by the fact that we requested it be heated up then they brought back half of our initial portions after putting it in the microwave. We ordered hot tea which never arrived and the waitress never came back to get us refills on our water either. After complaining they did not apologize or offer to discount anything.
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give it negative stars I would. This was hands down the most disgusting food I've ever had. I got the beef stew in a clay pot and it was half fat globs. Even the actual meat was weird and now I have a headache. Everyone else's food tasted old. I don't even know how to explain this. To top it of. We had the rudest server I have even encountered GEORGIA was her name. She was obstinate and argumentative. She refused to split the check even though we told her we needed that before we ordered. She actually handed us the schedule and a pen and told us to do it ourselves.

Yelp
House of chow CAN be a great restaurant. My wife and I really enjoy the food served here. The reason for my 3 star review below: My wife and I wanted take out from House of Chow. She called in the order while I was out running errands in hope that it would be ready by the time I got there. She was told it would be 20-25 mins (no big deal). I get there 20 minutes after my wife made the call. I stand there and stand there and stand there some more before someone finally comes and asks me anything. I tell the employee that I'm there for a pickup. Employee says the cooks are still cooking it and would be another 5 mins. I say "ok sounds good, thanks" We'll time goes on and on. Other people show up to pick up their to-go orders. The employees are on the phone taking orders non stop but are letting orders sit on the counter and not taking care of customers picking up food. 1 hour finally passes and I'm number 1 in line waiting for food with about 5-6 people behind me. I finally flag someone down. Employee comes up, I tell them I've been waiting for an hour. They say "hold on one minute" I wait another few minutes then they finally bring my order out. Food was great but the wait time was horrendous. I did notice they were severely understaffed that night but continued to take phone call after phone call but weren't getting any orders out and customers were standing and waiting for quite some time. Told the employee "sometimes you gotta let the phone ring and take care of your customers you have in house". If people want food they will call back. Especially if you aren't receiving any money until the customer picks up the food. I'm gonna give them some time to hire more folks or get their act together before I go back here. 3/5 stars.

Yelp
This is my favorite asian cuisine in Columbia. I order their hot and sour soup religiously when i'm sick and they have great customer service.

Yelp
Never EVER order GrubHub from this restaurant. I am a driver and was supposed to pick up an order from this place at 5:57 PM. Arrived at 6:00PM, food was not ready. Never received an alert that the food was ready, and after almost 50 minutes of waiting and constantly being told that "they were working on the order", another staff member tells me that the order already went out and that it had likely been picked up either accidentally or intentionally by a different customer. Then they told me it would be another 45 minutes to an hour before the food could be ready after having me already wait almost an hour for the food. Will never accept another delivery from here again and will never dine with them after tonight

Yelp
I just picked up a $25 order from H. of C. My first time back since 9 months ago in the midst of Covid ... I picked up a similar order then. I was (non) greeted by a non-friendly (a-friendly actually) man. I said "Thank you," he said not a thing. I got home and no egg rolls. So I swore I'd never go back. Move into tonight's experience. I've lived in Columbia most of my 66 years ... I always LOVED H. of C. So I decided, I'll do carry out again. I'm pretty sure it was the same guy behind the bar ... 6-7 orders sitting on a card table. I had requested extra sauces ... not in the bag. The guy did come over and gave them to me. He spoke ... wasn't "UN-friendly" ... just "A-friendly" like 9 months ago. I'm reheating the three items I ordered ... I'm pretty sure the food will be very good! I just am SO DISAPPOINTED that customer service continues to be such a low priority! The guy wasn't a "Soup-Nazi" (Seinfeld reference) ... but some lessons, practice, effort ... to PLEASE be more customer caring! Thank you, Bill Ryan

Yelp
Everything we have there is wonderful. I'm a lover of seafood. Wines are great. Service very helpful and food always good!

Yelp
I've ordered food from House of Chow on several occasions. I'm pretty picky about my Chinese food and have been looking for a local place to satisfy my craving. I'm originally from St. Louis, and tend to prefer their style of fried rice. I normal order veggie egg rolls and veggie fried rice. The food here is pretty pricey at $16 for my order but I think the flavor and quantity of the food is good.

Josh R.

Yelp
I ordered delivery and while the General Tsos was good, the "Springfield Cashew Chicken" was nothing more than fried chicken chunks and peanuts in a paper container. No sauce, no vegetables, no rice, etc. (see photo) It was confusing. I called them and the guy on the phone told me they must have forgot the sauce and he would refund me $2 because that's how much they charge for extra sauce. I told him I didn't order extra sauce, they literally didn't give me any sauce period. He wouldn't refund me the whole cost of the entree and said $2 is all he could do with an attitude. That is bad service and what I get for trying to shop local rather than go to Panda Express. I won't be ordering from them again.

Anne T.

Yelp
Tried for the first time. Placed an order for pickup. SUPER rude man finally connected me with my pickup order of mushy chicken and broccoli and unimpressive fried rice. Won't be going back.

Yelp
If this is the best Chinese food in Columbia, it is hard to believe. I wanted to know how the tofu was prepared in the special, and could barely get any information out of the waitress. It turned out it was rolled in some kind of batter and then very lightly fried? but was very undone in the middle, actually almost cold. And the mushrooms in the sauce were diced so small they were unrecognizable. Not at all what I expected. My friend was happy with her black mushroom dish, and the beans were crisp and the mushrooms tasty, but the service was not great, I had better "Chinese" food when I picked out my own ingredients at HuHot, and it was quite a bit cheaper. Definitely not going back here.

Bella S.

Yelp
Bland food. If you're on your death bed and can't really taste much you're going to the right place

Yelp
We visited Columbia, MO for a business trip and had heard about this wonderful restaurant and the quality of the food. The recommendations were spot on! The service, food and presentation of the meal was excellent. My family eats Chinese food every other week and I can say that the food here is one of the best I have ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant!

James C.

Yelp
1) It is pricey and the food isn't remarkably better than other establishments. It is better, and has more options, but I if you're wanting to dive into some Chinese food and you're craving Chinese food, there are less expensive options that will fully satisfy your 'fix'. 2) They were out of dumplings, they had zero dumplings available 3) Seriously, we had an extra 18% charge for a 'large' party. It was a family of five, two adults and three children - life isn't already hard enough, thanks for making it unnecessarily harder. There are more surprises than what is in the fortune cookie. 4) Two fried rice plates, one lettuce wrap plate, a noodle dish, two soups, two teas, three sodas, 18 percent charge and you can round the total up to 100 dollars : ( 5) I could hear other customers placing orders on their telephone. I was standing about 7 feet from the house phone before being seated and hearing a different customer's order.....seems concerning...and no, I don't remember your name, I don't have super hero hearing, but I knew you for a bit and what you ordered : ) Note: As I was waiting for a table, I thought to myself, "I will not be providing card information over the phone there if we place an order in the future."

Norman R.

Yelp
Love the experience, food was great, the service was very good look forward to coming back again. Love the hot tea and the style of how is served. Liked that when I ordered general chicken that they made extra spicy when I order so I really like it a lot. I will differently recommend people to try house of chow in here in Columbia. I like that you get more then you do at most places and the price was reasonable.
