House of Cocotte - Review - Arts District - Austin - The Infatuation

"House of Cocotte looks like countless other restaurants in the Arts District, with an interior heavy on brick and exposed rafters. But this all-day French spot has more utility than meets the eye. It’s part coworking space and part cafe, and everything from the croque monsieur to the juicy steak frites would be at home in a packed Parisian bistro. The dining room is about the size of a furniture warehouse, so last-minute tables are usually a breeze. Use it as a place to sip wine and snack on nicoise salad whenever you don’t feel like making dinner reservations." - Nikko Duren

I ended up here on a tuesday evening while waiting for my bus. Delicious drinks in a lovely building with good ambiance and incredible bartenders. I’m indecisive and I don’t know what I like and they helped me find out. They hold events frequently so make sure to come often; I’m sure this will become my new favorite spot. Food review will come when I have the chance to chow down some of it. Update: another Tuesday visit. I had the soup of the day (pea?) and a matcha latte; feeling green, I guess. Both delicious! Nice atmosphere and good service again.

I had a nice experience here, I was one of a few customers at the time because they recently opened. Still BYOB. The food and service was very good, nice presentation. I hope to go back again when there are more customers to get the full ambiance. The space is huge!! Nicely decorated with warm colors. I had the cheese board and steak tartare, and my friend had scallop ceviche. I would order these items again.

Google
Such a beautiful venue! The space feels homey. The food was not the most exciting or innovative and was overall fine. I would definitely go back just to hang out in the space and maybe grab a drink.

The staff is so friendly, immediately I felt welcomed! I brought my kids for a sip and script class. While their class was going I sat at the bar and watched their drinks were being made. The bartender was swift and every movement seemed calculated. I ordered myself a peach sangria. The late summer fruit combined with a crisp wine was delicious. I also ordered the grilled cheese and tomato brisqué. The soup hit the spot! Its creamy tomato goodness was perfect for a light quick dinner. We will definitely be back to try the breakfast menu.

I love this place. They just opened up and the service is wonderful. The ownership is French and extremely kind. They served me their first steak served at the restaurant and it was absolutely perfect. Its one of my favorite restaurants in LA now. Yes they are that good.

Google
Tried a new French restaurant in the Art’s District this week. The striped bass was by far my favorite dish! Just the right amount of crispy and tender. And the sauce oh my gosh… I’m excited to go back and see what’s on their lunch menu.

Google
The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was nice, but there was no parking, and the food was a bit dry. I couldn't find out street parking today, so I parked public parking for $13 across the street. I ordered hamburgers and today's special, but I think it would be better if the pickles came out separately. :)

Yelp
I visited House of Cocotte for a speed dating event, but came early for dinner. The steak frites was very good, but I wish that they offered béarnaise instead of chimichurri. The staff was hot and flirtatious, and I do not mind!

Yelp
The staff is friendly, the ambiance is great and the food & drinks are delicious. My bestie and I came here before The Next Fun Thing, All Hands On Deck event on Saturday 7/20/24. We had a great time and their event space is REALLY big

Yelp
Came back and brought another friend. Love it here. Ordered same tinned sardines, but also ordered Niçoise salad with chicken and the Parisian sandwich. All tasty and delicious. Niçoise salad goes well with the sardines, btw. Service has consistently been helpful and welcoming. Ambiance is makes this place lovely, and enjoyable to eat, aside from the food.

Yelp
Can in for a comdey show. Very nice ambiance. Classy and warm. I actually didn't expect the food to look the way it did. Better presentation than expected. To be honest, the pasta was okay. I tried my friends plate who had the steak fritz, it was delicious. I would come back just to try some of the other dishes. The mussels were absolutely delicious. Very flavorful. The service was okay. Very friendly and very nice, just not as attentive as I'd like. Had to ask for basic things like napkins, refill of water, etc. Maybe it was because there was a show going on. I don't want to base the service completely on that one particular evening. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
House of Cocotte was a great experience! Plenty of 1-hour (non-metered) street parking was available on a Saturday around noon which was pleasantly surprising. The restaurant itself is quite charming on the inside, with colorful accents, soft couches, and a rustic atmosphere. The servers were very attentive and friendly. Sardines - very delicious canned sardines with buttered toasted baguette! It was my first time having olives that were not pickled and I loved them! They were refreshing in contrast to the savoriness of the sardines. We felt that the dish had adequate portions. Avocado toast - I was intrigued by the goat cheese on the avocado toast, but I would say, this was probably one of the dishes that were less flavorful. The toast itself was topped with arugula and a citrus-like dressing, but otherwise the avocado on top did not taste well-seasoned. Toast was nice and crunchy but I would opt for another dish unless you're a huge fan of avocado toast. Parisian sandwich - Good flavor, french fries were crispy and surpringly light and fluffy! I loved the tiny pickles both inside and outside of the sandwich. Parisian Croque Monsieur - The bechamel sauce is definitely the star of the dish as it was a primary flavor, but the sandwich itself was soft, gooey, and flavorful. The salad was a great complement to the dish as it provided a lighter touch with the heavier sandwich. Great overall experience! Seemed like a fun place to host a party in one part of the restaurant (with mimosas!)

Yelp
House of Cocotte is very relaxing and colorfully decorated. The staff are attentive to you and make sure you have everything you need at your table. There is street parking and a parking lot directly across from the restaurant. Although I am not a drinker any longer, their bars are stocked with the very best spirits. They put on an awesome birthday presentation for my wife. Now the food... I had the Chilean Sea Bass that was made to perfection. Meaty but fluffy and seasoned with just the correct amount to get the taste buds firing. The mashed potatoes, broccolini and carrots were soooo good. We had two appetizers ; the salmon dip and the truffle fries .. THESE ARE A MUST ORDER -Delicious!!!! My wife had the wagyu steak cooked bleu (very rare) and she had a foodgasm.. the sauce that is with the steak just tops it to perfection. I Highly recommend House of Cocotte.

Yelp
This is new French restaurant in DTLA. Food was delicious. I love the charcuterie and oysters. My duck breasts were tasty and portion was big. The service was good and the owner was friendly. The meringue cake was so good. I had the best meringue cake ever. I wanted this again Parking was easy in the street, free for me at 8:30pm.

Yelp
A great addition to the growing arts district area! House of Cocotte offers French cuisine and I appreciate how they're open for breakfast, brunch, dinner, and late nights! It's the perfect place to lounge for brunch or grab a drink with a friend. I didn't catch the name of our waiter but he was so friendly and helpful! My friends and I stayed for a few hours, sipped on some delicious expresso martinis and Palomas and munching on delicious food. Steak tartare - rare steak minced with toppings, good traditional flavors Steak and frites- super tender steak! Caesar salad - classic and fresh Parking wasn't terrible, there is actually 1 hour free street parking right in front!! But only about 5 spaces, there's paid lots a block away as well.

Yelp
House of Cocottes is a new French restaurant in DTLA Arts District. South of France influenced restaurant opened actually just a day ago and we had a chance to dine there for a wonderful lunch today. We stopped by for a quick lunch and selected a few items from the menu to share. We tried Scallops Carpaccio, Sardines and Baguette and French fries with Parmesan. Scallops were very light, bright and with a touch of acidity that came from grapefruit. Radish complimented texture of scallops very well. Sardines are a very typical dish to South of France or Coastal Spain and was a pleasure to see on a menu. The interior and ambiance are very LA, modern, warehouse and industrial feel with beautifully designed accents of color throughout the restaurant. Service was quick, efficient and attentive. We had a few pleasant conversations with proprietors and staff and are looking forward to see more soon from House of Cocottes! We will be back and are excited to see how dinner hour will be. Tips: Plenty of parking nearby on the streets in the neighborhood, but no dedicated lot, as typical for this area. Small menu of Provence or South of France influenced dishes. Great bar, great decor, friendly people, cool atmosphere with couches and private spaces that are thoughtfully setup.

Yelp
I've been to multiple events at this venue, including in their event space. All very good experiences. Great date vibe. Had a couple things on food menu, very good. Staff was always accommodating and met owner who helped a lot during event. Definitely recommend for loungey hang, date or as event space.

Yelp
The ambience is comfortable, the food was fresh, seasonal, cooked just right and well seasoned. Their menu changes based on what's available but highly recommended

Yelp
This past weekend was My first time at House of Cocotte. I loved the atmosphere and the staff was great. The ambiance is a nice UPSCALE KICK BACK environment. I had a problem with my drink, I mentioned it to my person and he switched it for something else. I love it when I don't have to haggle over bad drinks or food. I now want to throw an WVENT here. The FIRST time was a CHARM. I'm hooked House of Cocotte

Yelp
We LOVE HOC!! We've been here a few times now and have tried a good portion of the menu, so feel we can give it an honest review. Everything we've eaten here has been fantastic and the service is top notch! We're mostly vegetarian with the occasional fish dish and there's plenty of options on the menu to keep us coming back. The vibe here is really laid back which we also love. There are various sizes of tables as well as high top seating and lounges for a cozier, casual hang. Highly recommended!

Yelp
House of Cocottes hosted a immaculate private birthday celebration for one of our close friends. When we first heard of the location we did not expect it to be so beautifully and tastefully designed. Every detail from the furniture, decorations and fixtures were done with an immaculate attention to details. The appetizers of oysters a cheese/charcuterie board was the perfect start. The main courses, which we had a large selection, were full of depth in flavor. Let's just say, you may come for the ambiance, but the food will keep you coming back. This is a sterling new concept in the eclectic Arts District of Downtown LA, where the French owners have plans for a workspace and event center. The restaurant feels like just the beginning a brand new community concept for this area. Thank you again for a superb evening!

Yelp
I went there for a brunch with friends and I loved their atmosphere, service and of course food. The service was perfect, the pistachio croissant with a hot coffee was so good and especially!!!! I can't stop thinking of their jambon-beurre. And the tomato soup I had? it was amazing. Def, I will visit there again to have the jambon beurre.

Yelp
French food in Arts District. Great ambiance. Excellent service. My boy Kevin really made it a great experience! Tomato bisque - creamy, savory, this is a winner. Sardines with grilled bread - choose between different luxury sardines. Very tasty and a great appetizer. Parisian salad - it's a salad and solid. Steak frites - chimichurri sauce, potato-y fries. This was tasty. Try the drinks here too, great selection. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Made a reservation for 12/27, and confirmed a couple of times with Resy. We arrived at the restaurant only to discover it was closed for the week. Resy won't take responsibility and the restaurant has been crickets. Finding another restaurant at the last minute was a challenge. It's disappointing that neither Resy nor the restaurant will acknowledge this.

Yelp
Have been trying to get the word out to the neighbors that this is such a great local spot for the Arts District. Beautiful atmosphere and food for an approachable price and the staff are consistently welcoming and warm. We have so many fancy places down here and not as many spots you could frequent on the regular. We finally tried it and instantly become regulars. They have everything from drinks to cappuccinos and it feels elevated and cozy at the same time. Love that something as simple as a sandwich, tomato soup, or apple tart blends flavors and texture in a way that make it special. If you live in the area it's a must add to your weekly roster. It's also perfect for larger groups. We've taken our staff and it can accommodate a bigger party and still feel intimate. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Oh my goodness, where do I even begin to describe my amazing experience at House of Cocotte?! From the moment I walked in, I was blown away by the stunning decor and refreshing plants that immediately transported me to a peaceful oasis. I started off with an old fashioned, which was expertly crafted and absolutely delicious. For appetizers, I couldn't resist the pork belly and scallop carpaccio. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender and packed with flavor, while the scallop carpaccio was light and refreshing with just the right amount of acidity. But the real star of the show was the striped bass. I don't think I've ever had fish so perfectly cooked - it was flaky, juicy, and bursting with flavor. And don't even get me started on the sides - the roasted veggies were perfectly seasoned and the mashed potatoes were rich and creamy. And as if that wasn't enough, the Coffee Confessionals espresso and hazelnut crème brûlée was the perfect way to end the meal. The creamy custard was perfectly caramelized on top, and the espresso and hazelnut flavors were perfectly balanced. And of course, I couldn't resist pairing it with an espresso martini - the perfect nightcap.

Yelp
We stopped by for drinks and small bites at happy hour. We ordered the tuna tartare (so good!), the guacamole (really nice and citrusy) and truffle fries (yum). Everything was fantastic about this place. Beautiful and comfortable furniture and tables. The service was incredible and everyone was so nice. Loved it all. We'll definitely be back!!!

Yelp
We went for Kiss and Wine, which is an outstanding event and I have attended for years at different venues. This location is quaint and right in the middle of the Arts District downtown Los Angeles. We paid a cover to see the band and reserved a table for dinner. About an hour into our dinner we were asked if we wanted our bill although we had just received our second round of drinks. Food was still on our plates and we were asked twice afterwards if we were ready for our check. I told the waitress that we had planned to order more drinks, but I would love to finish the wine in my glass first. Needless to say we were rushed through our drinks, although we had ordered 3 rounds. We probably we have ordered more but I was beyond irritated, so we left. Beautiful venue but a horrible experience.

Yelp
This place opened up across our building recently and we have stopped in a few times. I absolutely love the vibe and the food, but I have been so impressed by the service! The staff are incredibly kind, responsive, and make the experience so incredible. At brunch this weekend I tried the Parisian Sandwich with fries that was so good and so filling. They also had this thing called the Mimosa Experience that was awesome! You pay for your mimosa by the bottle and they bring you juices. You get to mix it yourself with a fresh bottle instead of those pre-batched pitchers at most brunch places. We only got two bottles before we needed to go, but they get cheaper with each round so next time we are going to make sure we can stay a while!

Yelp
Prepare to be amazed by not just its culinary wonders but also the versatile spaces that cater to the diverse needs of its patrons. The interior and ambiance are unmistakably LA. The designers have artfully crafted a modern, warehouse-like space, embracing the city's industrial charm. The gigantic arcing wood ceilings and sleek lines evoke a sense of sophistication while captivating French art and all types of green flora allure the eye. The pièce de résistance of any meal--the Coffee Confessionals espresso and hazelnut crème brûlée. Prepare for your taste buds to dance a tango of delight as you indulge in this heavenly creation. The creamy custard, flawlessly caramelized on top, whispers promises of bliss with each crack of the spoon. The symphony of espresso and hazelnut flavors, meticulously balanced, will transport you to a state of dessert nirvana. It's a flawless ending to a culinary journey that will leave you begging for an encore. As you delve deeper into this enchanted establishment, you'll discover an event space that can transform any occasion into a truly memorable experience. Whether you're planning a corporate gathering, a magical wedding, or an intimate soirée, House of Cocotte has got you covered. Whether you're seeking a romantic evening, a gathering of friends, or a great place to work, this enchanting haven delivers an experience that transcends expectations. One last word of advice... Watch your step as you might stumble backward into Carte Blanche, a secret speakeasy run by Philippe squared 2 fun Frenchies who effortlessly mix up drinks with conversation and fun that might just have you shedding a tear or two by the time it's all over.

Yelp
Such a beautiful and unique place, serving delicious french food with great service. Loved the overall vibe, felt like you were dining at a friend's house. The melted Brie was exceptional. The Niçoise salad and Branzino were both light and flavorful. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Fun atmosphere. Great service. Solid value. Oh, and the music was great! I suggest going for happy hour and getting some of the shareable plates.

Yelp
I predict House of Cocotte will become THE place to go to in the area based on the excellent customer service, delicious food, and ambiance/music. I guess those going there will be called Cocottes? :) It has that "je ne sais quoi" as the owners are French. :) Kevin, the Manager, helped me and made food and drink recommendations. The Nicosia salad, French bread, and coffee were delicious. Kevin was friendly, which gave the place a welcoming and homie vibe that I loved. Same with the owners and all other team members. I'll come back with a group of friends. They also have a speakeasy and gorgeous interior/interior design - an excellent place for bdays or other events. I spent a few hours on the outdoor patio today, and I had a blast!

Yelp
Ambiance is very chill and intimate, food is stellar (especially the entrees), and the dessert was flaming fantastic!

Yelp
LOVE this place! Not only do they have great food and drinks, but they also have an event space and co-working in the back. A hidden gem in Arts District

Nguyet C.

Yelp
Food is delicious! I recommend the tuna tartare or beets tartare 11/10!!! Passion mule is dangerously good love the interior so much, very hip! Service is very friendly and safe, however it is a bit slow but still nice vibes

Yelp
Service: 5/5 Very attentive staff. Never felt like our table was neglected at any point. Continued to check in regularly to make sure we were doing well. Food: 5/5 High quality presentation. Their dishes are very European inspired and you can taste the quality. They also work with local businesses. Ambiance: 5/5 Has a phenomenal balance between a dark wood panels and Boho elements with sky lights, exposed light wood on the ceiling and plants throughout. The music was very relaxing and made the overall experience very pleasant.

Yelp
What a great place! Easy and convivial ambiance, friendly service and prices, and the food! We ordered the steak frites and haricots verts. They were perfect and truly French - the steak was the correct cut (not the typical American cut that most so-called French restaurants serve) and the frites would be well-received in the 6 ème arrondissement! Thank you for a wonderful evening!

Yelp
Came on a Thursday for the all you can eat mussels and fries. Staff was very nice and the food was really really good.

Yelp
PHENOMENAL AMBIANCE. DELICIOUS FOOD. Phillipe THE OWNER IS AMAZING. also there's a speakeasy here. So much space and hidden compartments that make this an exciting visit for food & a good time

Yelp
Loved our dinner last night! The food was delicious. I'm a sucker for well prepared French food, and this was perfect. Would highly recommend the steak tartare, and duck breast. Also, our waiter was lovely. Get here before you can't get a reservation:) One note, come early for Oysters! They have a happy hour and we missed them.
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
I made a reservation on open table and upon arrival from my Uber coming from a bar the restaurant was closed 1 hour early so disappointed I am just writing the review as I'm just getting home :(

Kc B.

Yelp
I love this place! The interior design is so classy but it feels like home. My friends and I celebrated a birthday and the service was 10/10! Food was so good, I had the steak frites and it's probably one of the best steak I had ngl Service was attentive and outstanding, I must say that the two managers really made it special for us, and they're cute too hahaha on that note, having to work in the industry before, when my friend and I went up to grab our last drink at the bar, the bartender with the ponytail was visibly upset. Not sure what that's about but it was extremely uncomfortable to watch. But the experience is sooo worth it! And will definitely come back for brunch with my girlies!

Yelp
Excellent food, curated wine and cocktails, attentive and friendly staff, and such a charming and inviting esthetic! House of Cocotte is an instant Arts District staple, holding its own in a neighborhood filled with world class restaurants.

Larry M.

Yelp
My wife and I had dinner here. We started with the pork belly and scallops carpaccio. The plating was beautiful and the food was absolutely, positively delicious. For dinner, we had the halibut. Again, beautiful plating and totally delicious. The service was fantastic and the restaurant is so delightful. We both highly recommend House of Cocotte, and can't wait to go back!

Lee P.

Yelp
While the venue is cute, the food was just lacking. Every dish we ordered was subpar and not enjoyable. Granted, I have high expectations for LA dining, but it was a real disappointment to our entire party. We we also mistakenly charged for a bottle of wine, which we did not order. Not sure how this mistake was made, since we were the only ones there until torward the end of our brunch.

Jai L.

Yelp
Large open space and lots of seating. The steaks were delicious (very rare). Downside is the space is so large that it feels empty and isn't really party vibes yet. Friendly service though!

Tad Y.

Yelp
The most important thing to know is how magical your evening could be if you go here. I mostly only leave reviews for places that put real love and care into their food and service. Eating out after all is as much about the experience as anything else. House of Cocotte brings this to a new level. There is love in every aspect of this entire building, which is so much more than just a restaurant. The staff and service were great, really wonderful energy and a significant knowledge base. The food was exactly what I would have expected, and I thought quite good. The owner was welcoming and energetic and his excitement about this place was infectious and inspiring. I had an unusual cocktail which paired gin with cucumber and it was excellent. We had the steak frites, duck, and oysters. Everything was perfect. The frites in particular were proper French style frites, and I am hoping they introduce mussels soon, as they would also be perfect for moules frites. For desert, I had to try the creme broulee and the tart de maison. Both were quite wonderful in their own ways, though the tart is more like a cake than the name tart would imply. It cam with candied raspberries and ice cream and a demi glace... Sounds amazing right? It was... The ambiance is wonderful. The design of the place is great, and the management is clearly focused on art and dynamic spaces and how they contribute to people's experiences. The restaurant is the tip of the iceberg, as the rest of the building has a speakeasy, flex work spaces, and a larger performance or event space that could be a wonderful venue or place for a special event. It is not inexpensive. The parking in that area is tough. The music is a little loud and the room is cavernous and that contributes to difficulty for those with damaged hearing. Worth every penny and any inconvenience. Kitchen closes at ten; the bar is open until 2 am. I would love to keep this place a secret, so it does not get overrun and I could always get a table... I cannot but hope for amazing success for this place!
