Wine flights, cheese boards, tapas & pizza, plus classes
"As the name suggests, House Wine is located in an old house, with a bunch of tiny rooms filled with comfy chairs and tables that add a sense of intimacy to the space. There are more than 100 bottles of wine available at House Wine, and all of them can be ordered by the glass. If there’s another place in Austin that offers that much flexibility, we have yet to find it. And with close to a dozen different flight options, House Wine is also a great spot to learn about wines—from coastal whites and global orange wines to South American reds." - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

"There are over 100 bottles of wine on the list at House Wine, and all of them are available by the glass, offering a level of flexibility we have yet to find outside of the many yoga studios dotting Town Lake. House Wine is located in a renovated house with a bunch of little rooms that provide a sense of much-needed intimacy after sharing a giant spring with 600 strangers. There’s also a small food menu with charcuterie boards, tinned fish plates, baked brie, and small tapas. Throw in a large, fenced-in patio that adds some serenity, Happy Hour, and live music most of the week, and it’s easy to see why House Wine is one of the few staples on Barton Springs Road that’s managed to stick around." - nicolai mccrary
"After closing its original 16-year-old Josephine Street location in late May when the landlord passed away, I learned that the longtime Austin wine bar reopened in Bouldin Creek at 1711 South First Street on Friday, September 27. Founder and owner Kerry White has kept the wine list rooted in the same ethos she established when she opened on Josephine Street in 2008, focusing on small producers using natural, organic, and biodynamic methods—groundbreaking at the time in Austin—and offering global options by the glass or bottle across styles from sparklings and rosés to whites and reds, plus staff-curated wine flights (three two-ounce pours). Non-wine offerings include beers, ciders, wine-based cocktails, nonalcoholic drinks, teas, and coffee. The reopening has brought on several former staffers from the suddenly-closed Aviary Wine & Kitchen, including wine experience manager Blaire Beasley and operations manager Justin Jacobson, and former Aviary chef Zakk Pollard developed a food menu of cheese and charcuterie boards, pizza, snacks, and plates. The new space, a South First house that previously housed the Art for the People Gallery, offers indoor and outdoor dine-in areas, will host wine classes and other events, and celebrated its first day with a reopening party (free glasses of sparkling, food, and other wines); regular hours are 3–11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 3–10 p.m. Sunday and Monday." - Nadia Chaudhury
