Visited for what was meant to be a simple meal with my two 16-year-olds. I ordered two ciders with food. A staff member then came over to say their house rule was strictly over-18s only. I pointed out that supervised drinking with a meal is legal at 16–17 and that there was no signage or indication of any stricter rule.
What followed was a genuinely uncomfortable moment. The ciders were removed abruptly, with no alternative offered and no attempt to speak to us in a clear or straightforward way. The tone made it feel as though we were being blamed for something we couldn’t possibly have known — as if we were at fault for their lack of communication.
I asked for a full refund, as it was obvious we were no longer wanted in the room. I was told the refund would only apply to the ciders. We decided to leave.
I work in hospitality and run similar operations, and I have rarely seen a situation handled this poorly. This was a simple, common scenario that could have been resolved in one calm sentence. Instead, it became tense, awkward, and unwelcome, turning what should have been a relaxed evening into something we wanted to leave as fast as possible.
An experience so uncomfortable we won’t be returning — and I would urge others to be aware of how guests are spoken to before deciding to visit.
