Former Dija Mara Chef Opening North Park Restaurant - Eater San Diego

"Hoxton Manor, a new neighborhood restaurant on University Avenue, honors Asian ingredients in modern California cuisine. It focuses on the cuisines of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and surrounding areas in mainland Southeast Asia, with a dark and moody vibe. Officially launching on July 21, it will serve dinner Wednesday through Sunday, and its bar will stay open until 1:30 a.m." - Candice Woo

We stumbled here randomly for New Years Eve drinks and were pleasantly surprised. The cocktails were delish, servers were pleasant and they had a great house playlist. The depth of the restaurant comes as a nice surprise, we were able to get a table in the back without any wait. There was also cool art pieces throughout the restaurant. Can’t wait to go back for dinner! Edit: the cocktail program here is better than the food. The Taiwanese chicken was a little too sweet, but nice contrast with the cucumber salad. The pork belly kebabs were decent but perhaps a bit dry.

I've been wanting to come here for awhile!!! This place has been open since last July. The outside doesn't seem like much but the inside is super cute. It's the kind of place you might accidentally pass by but it's worth coming into! I'd say the menu is not for people who want to eat anything simple, it's loaded with flavor and each dish is extremely unique in my option. My favorites were the yellowtail with the lettuce (you basically make a lettuce wrap), the octopus, the oyster mushroom skewers, and the prawn shrimp. The drinks were all delicious, you'll definitely want two or three. All the dishes are memorable. Really didn't have anything I wouldn't have again from here! Perfect date night spot or for a girls night out :)

Food was overly salty. There was no balance in the flavor or taste in any dish. I have a salty tongue but even I think the food was too salty for my liking. There was big rock salt sprinkled on almost every dish that I ordered! The fried cracker (not even sure what that was) on top of the squid fried rice was too burnt to eat. I took a few bites and they were all bitter, the black color from the squid ink could only mask the color of it being burnt, but could not hide the flavor. The rice grains were somewhat hard. The coconut roti was very oily. The crying tiger steak was at room temperature when it was served to me. And it was rare. I was not asked how I wanted the steak to be cooked. I would appreciate it if I was informed that the steak would come very rare before I ordered it. From what I know from eating tasty, authentic Asian dish at different Asian restaurants, no food was served at room temperature and no salt could be seen on any dish, let alone big grains of salt. The only dishes that were decent were mushroom and chicken skewers. Juice and soft. But they also had many burnt parts that I had to pick out before I could eat. Overall it was a disappointment. I guess I can’t trust the Michelin guide in terms of good tasty food.

This place is unassuming from the outside in, but once inside, the vibe is a mix of service bustle and moody Bansky-style art. Dimly lit, you get the sense of a private supper club as you walk thru. Our hostess Desire was very friendly and knowledgeable and was able to get us seated quickly even after no reservation on a Saturday night. With only a few tables at the front, the restaurant leads back to a larger patio with seating. Once at your table the lighting is efficient and does not distract from your experience. As we sat down, a special vegan menu was slipped onto the table as an option. I really appreciated that special attention to their customers preferences! The menu is southeast Asian "fusion" although that's not my favorite word to use... it was a nice mix of Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian. Our server Fiona was pleasant and patient, we asked a lot of questions of the items we ordered since we love to know how great food is made! She had all the answers so I was impressed at the training the service team had obviously been thru. We started with the Smoked eggplant dip served with coconut roti. Get this if your really like smoked flavored foods! While the roti was really more like naan, it was excellent. I am a huge fan of Taiwanese fried chicken, so we added a appetizer plate of the same. The chicken was perfectly tender and the flavors took me immediately back to Taipei! So authentic! Each day they offer a mock-tail of bartenders choice, tonight's was Mango flavored and was just perfection. We also ordered the Seventy-Seven. Actually, I had two because they were so amazing and yummy! The gem of the menu is the grilled oyster mushrooms plate. Seriously, this was decadent but so good we wanted a second order. It is not vegan, so just FYI, but I won't give away their secrets! Just trust me when I tell you to order this! At that point, we were getting full but we decided to share a main dish, and IYKUK and order the brisket. This is a perfect dish to share because of the pure size, but also because it is so rich! The beef was braised with love, super tender, succulent, marbled and offered the perfect bite. The flavors were sophisticated and the protein is served with a platter of crisp green lettuce, house pickled veggies, crispy fish cakes to make a taco or lettuce wrap! We had to close out all that with some sweetness, and opt'd for the matcha cake. The banana dessert is their most popular, but I wanted to keep with the dinner theme and picked this one as it reminded me of a classic Asian dessert. It was perfectly plated, and was a great mix of a lightly sweetened vanilla bean dense cake with a top layer of matcha flavored gelatin. It is a very specific dessert but I liked it. The owner Rob was generous with his time, extremely friendly and shared so much insight on the restaurant and his experiences living in Southeast Asian. This is a great new spot in town that is a must try! Pro tip: skip the eggplant dip and order extra mushroom skewers!

11/4/21 update: food was much better than the first time around! squid fried rice (delicious and not fishy at all) and charred eggplant dip & roti were the favs. good interesting food, some i haven’t had before! brisket and mango cheesecake (not mango heavy) were the stars of the show. will be back to try other dishes!

Great spot for small shareable appetizer plates! I loved that I could try many things on the menu because the portion sizes were perfect! Split several dishes with a friend and it was just right! Everything was tasty and fresh and they even had yummy cocktails! Would definitely recommend!

Came here for our anniversary dinner and it was amazing! We have been wanting to come here for a while, as we are big fans of Ryan Costanza's other restaurant, Dija Mara. We were right to come here too. The flavors of each dish were astounding, and each combination of flavors was very deliberate. I think everyone is bound to find something they like on the menu. The big stand outs for me personally were the Pork spare ribs and the grilled octopus. The ribs had an amazing sticky sweet glaze that was caramelesque. The octopus was cooked to perfection and was served with the best potatoes I think I've ever had. Every single item we ordered had some amazing and unique flavors. The cocktails were wonderful and inventive as well! We will definitely be back.

One of the best meals I’ve ever had in SD! All of the flavors come together so well in each dish and the food is super fresh - right down to the herb garnishes. Highly recommend everything we had, which was: chicken skewers, oyster mushroom skewers, coconut roti with eggplant dip, Vietnamese crepe with pork and the brisket. Can’t wait to come back to try more!
