The story of Huck Finn Donuts, South Side Chicago’s beloved diner chain | Eater Chicago

"Opened in 1998 as the chain’s suburban outpost, this location maintains the diner’s famous doughnuts and classic menu items but stands out as the only 24-hour site, preserving the tradition of late-night breakfasts and after-hours crowds. Its round-the-clock service makes it the primary late-night haunt for fans seeking the same diner staples and community-minded hospitality found at the city locations." - Naomi Waxman

Google
I really love Huck Finn Restaurant, I visit very often, sometimes even late night after hanging out with the ladies and we want some good food and coffee. The staff are really cool and great. It’s a comfortable atmosphere with plenty space and parking lot has quite a few parking spaces also. The have a room with slots and serve up fresh baked goodies. Mostly it’s affordable, the prices aren’t bad at all, I’ll forever stop and grab something to eat at Huck Finn. I’ve got all my family and friends coming to enjoy the service and food now. We always dine in.

Google
A great neighborhood chain where there’s two in Oaklawn and one in the chimney park. When you don’t want to cook or do dishes, you can come here and have breakfast on a lazy Saturday morning and it’s very busy and you can have a $16 elephant sized donut for your family of 10 people. It’s a fun place. The food is OK, but there is a lot of it and for example for 1895 with liver and onions you can get a free soup or salad, a dessert of a doughnut, Jell-O, ice cream, or rice, pudding (your choice) and hashbrowns along with your so there is no wonder why you have a lot of people coming here because you can have food to take home and not have to cook. There is plenty of open parking and there’s also a little video gaming room. Friendly staff and fast cooking.

Google
This is a much better spot than the cell phone lot to wait for someone's flight to land. The service is good. The food is classic diner fare with a bonus of a nice assortment of donuts to go. The gravy is top notch. Good stuff. Oh and they do have electronic gaming if that is in your baliwick.

Google
I received 3 pieces of bacon , 3 scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of normal white bread for almost 18 dollars …. The saddest little meal for the same price as a high quality pub burger…..also got no veteran discount blown away at the prices

Google
5 stars all around. After a full day of traveling, 3 hour delay in Houston due to the government shut-down, and shortage of air traffic controllers, we made it to Chicago. We got our rental and drove straight to Huck Finn’s around 12:00 am. I had the 2 eggs any style, with bacon, it comes with toast and hash. That hit the spot for me. Everything was so tasty, Oh, I added the chicken noodle soup. Everything tasted home-style. I am going back again this morning for breakfast.

Google
My deep fried porkchops were seasoned & still moist. Hashbrowns were done exactly how I asked. Crispy edges w/ cheese & onions. Eggs were over medium. Perfect breakfast for me. I appreciate you Chef & our waitress was awesome. Thank You Huck Finn

Yelp
Had a late night visit here. The Grecian chicken breast was great. Came with soup or salad and dessert. They have gaming, too.

Yelp
Have gone to this restaurant for many years and the restaurant is consistently good especially for breakfast. You can get almost any meal you can imagine here. Food quality and prep is decent. Known as a "Greek" restaurant by many due to ownership and extensive menu typical of this restaurant genre. Service is ok as servers often have a lot of tables and do same bussing of tables. Prices have increased as they have everywhere. Known for their donuts as well. Recommend.?

Yelp
I had to drop my Mother in Love off at Midway airport, so on my way home I thought that I would have a little breakfast. Hickman's Finn is the perfect place. They are open 24 hours a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The are Famous for their donuts; and they have one called the Texas donut . This thing is Humongous ; I've never had one because it's usually sold out. The restaurant is a good size and a semi private area great for larger groups. The ambience is nice; clean and well maintained by the awesome staff. If you didn't know; all of my reviews begin with 5 stars and depending on the cleanliness, customer service, wait time to place an order and receive the food ; the stars begin to drop. My server was Michelle and she was Amazing. My overall experience is Definitely 5 Stars. Think I'll get a few donuts before I go!!!

Yelp
One of my fav breakfast spots, yet I have never reviewed it. I ate here this past Friday for National Siblings Day. The restaurant is always clean and waitresses are usually friendly. Our food came out super fast. Perfect place for after church, club or mid day eats. They're open 24hrs and offer a truck stop kind of menu. They have the BEST sprinkled vanilla donut. OH, they also have a separate slot machine room for all the gamblers. The only downside is that they don't have Stevia (sugar substitute).

Yelp
Me + partner wanted breakfast this morning so I thought HFR would fit the bill....they sure did. We haven't been here in years but pass by them all the time. Upon entering a nice older guy greeted us and sad us down. The place was clean and a bit nostalgic. Our server was Sylvia. She was professional, friendly and overly on point with her service. She took care of every detail. She earned her tip and then sum. Good tasting food. Great experience!!!

Yelp
Sundays are obviously always busy Costa The host was super busy that we had to go up to him to put our names on wait list. We got seated after the approximate time told to us (15) but we got seated earlier. Ana was our server and she's spectacular Loved that they play 80's and 90's music very nostalgic Coffee is good Cream of chicken very good Hash brown was meh they were a little mushy Service is very good!! Will definitely come back to this location

Yelp
Sounds like a plan! Since we're out in Oak Lawn, why not head over to Huck Finn's? It's been a while, and Mom was craving a hamburger, so their special with fries seems like a good deal. We ordered that for her, along with a soup. When the food arrived, though, the hamburger had cheese. Mom isn't a fan, and even though the waitress had noted "no cheese," it seems the cook missed it. We decided to just keep it rather than wait another 15 minutes for a new one. As for me, I ordered the turkey dinner. It wasn't bad, but the gravy was a bit overpowering, kind of turning the plate into a sea of gray. It tasted fine, just a little too much gravy for my liking. I've eaten there before and know it's generally good food for the price. So, if you're looking for a decent meal, Huck Finn's is worth a visit - just be sure to be extra specific when you order!

Yelp
Breakfast Review! Coming to Huck Finn during Christmas time is always a nostalgic experience for me. I came here with my family for breakfast. Our server, Stephanie, was very bubbly and energetic. She was great about making recommendations, asking questions about how we wanted our orders, and ensured we were checked on often. Our food came out promptly; everything was fresh and hot, big portions, and hit the spot. One pays the bills at the front register and don't pass up their famous donuts. Overall, Huck Finn is a classic diner style restaurant open 24/7. It's a neighborhood staple that doesn't change in quality. Already looking forward to my next visit next year for the holidays.

Yelp
No one does eggs like the Finn. The prices have gone up, but the breakfast is unbeatable. Lunch selections are equally delicious & their soup is always outstanding.
google avatar

Dolores D.

Yelp
Remember eating here when I was younger and the soup was also delicious. Got a soup Togo and some donuts. They give you bread and butter with your soup. They also have big donuts like the Alaskan donut.

Yelp
Who can say no to all day breakfasts? Huck Finn is a pretty good family restaurant with lots of options. I tried their chipotle skillet which with a side of buttered English muffins which was pretty yummy. The service was great too, very friendly staff and the ambience was nostalgic and homey. Would come back again.

Yelp
Maybe I ordered the wrong item or they had an off night. I decided to get the Philly cheese steak and that was a poor choice. The meal came with soup which tasted wonderful and the service wasn't bad at all. The restroom was clean, but there is a funny smell in the dining area. I don't see myself going back to this location at all.

Yelp
FOOD POISONING First, I ordered a ceasar salad, and attached is what a received (a garden salad with ceasar dressing). I just ate it. That would have been fine except everyone who ate salad got HORRIBLE FOOD POISONING. Only those who ate salad had horrible diarrhea the rest of the day. Other orders did not give anyone else food poisoning just the salad. I called to tell the Manager we were all violently ill, and he was VERY RUDE. He raised his voice saying that he doesnt know how we could be sick no one gets sick from salad. He doesnt understand how people get sick from lettuce or vegetables because "they're vegetables." He said maybe its something else or the dressing because they "use a lot." He said he doesnt know what to tell me theres nothing he can do for me and I cant help you. He went on to say no we did not get sick from his food. I told him we did not want our money back or compensation for being ill just to make sure that his salads are being washed and food handlers are washing their hands. He continued to raise his voice and said I dont know what to tell you you cant get sick from salad I dont know how youre sick im not a doctor. SO I replied, "Well WE ARE doctors so we know how easy it is to get food poisoning from salads." (are all docs and healthcare workers). HE WAS PISSED. He just kept speaking over me and yelling. Anyway he didnt want to hear it and was certain that his food is clean and you cant get sick from it. I ended up just hanging up. had he been polite and knew how to talk over the phone and was a little more apologetic that would be one thing. But he was certain we got sick from elsewhere. we have gone ahead and contacted the Department of Public Health in Cook County due to suspected contamination and food poisoning. Overall this place is very dirty and the food is far overpriced for the type and quality.

Christina R.

Yelp
Without a doubt, a must try for their baked goods! Absolutely love their apple fritters!!!

Nora K.

Yelp
Horror show, food was bad and we all got food poisoning called the manger and he just said no u didn't get food poisoning I don't know how you get sick from salad

Yelp
We were warmly greeted and quickly seated. Given menus and coffee. The coffee was just right not weak or too strong. Meant to take a pix I had a patty melt and my friend had a Denver omelet. Plenty of food and filling. Definitely going back soon.

Ryan V.

Yelp
Went for the donuts was disappointed maybe expecting more because heard great things. Have had better. But they were fine
google avatar

Fredrick B.

Yelp
It's okay--("CHEF RECOMMENDED -- BECKY THATCHER BREAKFAST") 2 Eggs (any style) with 2 slices of bacon, 2 sausage links, 2 pancakes, butter and syrup

Shelia L.

Yelp
The food comes quickly once you order it however it does not come back hot and for the pricing it's too expensive . I was there with my grandson he ordered a short stack I ordered veggie omelette with turkey sausage and a Sprite and he ordered apple juice total came up to $52.09 ! And the food was average !

Carolina W.

Yelp
My bill was 72 dollars, I payed in cash with a $100 bill and got back $20 and some cents. I was supposed to get back 27.. basically left a 17 dollar tip for not great service. ‍

Yelp
Went here a couple of times while I was in Oak Lawn. It's a pretty good restaurant. The soups I had were delicious, and the turkey club very good. The pastries in front look and smell delicious, but I didnt eat any. The staff is friendly and helpful. Great meals!!

Yelp
Having lived in the area as long as I have, I had only eaten at Huck Finn's once for takeout, and whenever my mother would being their donuts for my kids. That said, my mom and stepfather have been coming here for years for breakfast, and yesterday was a family affair as nine of us sat down to enjoy a Huck Finn's breakfast! Walking in, the place is a bit dated, kind of an old-school diner vibe, but for me, long as the food is good, I can dig it! So I will now focus on what I had, and what my wife had: I enjoyed the Becky Thatcher breakfast (with all crispy bacon), a side of grits, and the cinnamon roll French toast, and my wife enjoyed the Denver omelette. My breakfast was awesome! The French toast was presented as cinnamon rolls, not too sweet, yet sweet enough to indulge in its decadence. Honestly, with that dollop of whipped cream on top, no syrup was needed. The Becky Thatcher breakfast was awesome, eggs were perfect as was my beloved bacon!! My wife's Denver omelette was great; she said they definitely give you your money's worth! My only slight ding was that the grits were very watery. Grits are not supposed to have that liquidy consistency, and I wish they were thicker. As such, I would suggest to ask the customers if they want their grits thick or thin so that everyone gets what they want. One more thing: our server, Sylvia, was GREAT!!! She was friendly, attentive, accommodating, and all around just a nice person. So to the Huck Finn management: give that woman a raise!! She has definitely earned it!!! Anyhow, my wife and I will be back! Peace and love!! Food....................................A Price....................................B+ Ambiance...........................C+ Customer Service..............A+

Josh H.

Yelp
Food is pretty overpriced, never had it though, so this review won't concern their menu items. I go here for their pastries; which are 10x better than Dunkin/any supermarket. The pasties + the remarkable service = 5 stars However, the overpriced menu drops it to 4 stars. If they lowered their prices a little bit--(I know things are pricier now, but come on)--I'd give them 5.

Daniel M.

Yelp
This place sucks do not go there and the staff are rude and slow and the food is horrible and way over priced and McDonald is a five star compared to this place.

N H.

Yelp
Customer for years at Huck Finn. Recently, disappointed after finding a fly and hair in my salad. Since my order was phoned in, when I contacted the manager, he was rude and hung up. He stated, no flies and bring it back and let me see. I was home for the evening and it spoiled my appetite after spending $80, I was afraid to eat more of the other food items.

Yelp
I've been a customer of Huck Finn for well over 10+ years and today was the first time I've seriously considered taking my business else where. I contacted their establishment to inquire about a somewhat large party coming in for good food and fellowship this weekend. I spoke with a young lady who passed the call over to another person. I advised him the reason for my call and he immediately started telling me about his schedule and what he already knew he couldn't do. After about 2 minutes I suggested perhaps this wouldn't be a great fit for my party of 12 to 15 when he abruptly stated "whatever"! I guess he couldn't find another way to end his call but clearly he didn't feel it appropriate to give decent phone etiquette. Although I understand his reasoning for his inability to service our party I still feel there was a better way of handling the end of the call. It's not a good idea to get too comfortable with your patrons, they are the ones that keep you on business. Signed Thanks for the memories

Yelp
The donuts were amazing. My breakfast was good but I wish I hadn't heard the servers having a very personal conversation ....with lots of swear words. Inappropriate in the setting we were in, glad I didn't have my children with me.

Yelp
One of the go to spots for my fiancé and myself. Very homey environment and friendly staff. The food was hot and fresh. I got the Philly cheese steak and fiance got the chicken pita both were delicious (we always try eachothers food). Fries were hot and crunchy! They also have desserts to go by the front cashier. Donuts, muffins the whole 9 yards.

Yelp
THE RUBEN. Period. Get it. I need at least 85 characters so, ruben ruben ruben ruben rube

Yelp
10 o'clock at night coming from Midway airport no place is open. Everything is closed. We've been in the air for 4 1/2 hours. We left a half an hour late plane was supposed to be in at 7:30. Plane got in at 8:15 getting the luggage picking up our car on the way home we stopped at two different restaurants which were closed and I remembered Huckfinn place. I haven't been in a couple years but it's on the way to our house from the airport so my wife and I went to Huck friends got there about 1015. I had a saladand Thanksgiving, turkey with stuffing and veggies and my wife had a omelette with goat cheese and spinach and everything was great for a restaurant laid at night. The waitress was pleasant this place got a great review from David Haynes who does reviews on WGN Radio Friday morning, so it's an easy five star.

Dan M.

Yelp
We went there yesterday for dinner and our waitress. Marie was rude, ignorant and unprofessional so as we sat at our table waiting for Marie to take our order, she still was talking to her friends at that table until I walked up to her and asked for her to take her order so then she leaves her friends and asked us what we want for drink, then goes back to the table and continues to talk to them. Then my girlfriend walks up to complain about her so then she goes to get our soft drinks as she's complaining all the way while walking there about us so then she comes back with the drinks and takes our order with an attitude so we order soup and a sandwich so She comes back with a soup and slams a bowl on a table and walks away. Then the manager comes over and apologize after the fact, she's yelling at us across the dining room. I don't think we will be going back there.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Awesome service, great diner food, great donuts. Kind and welcoming server and atmosphere. Also here's a redemption photo of the grilled cheese. The salad was fresh too!

Margaret H.

Yelp
Stopped in at dinner time a few evenings ago and opted for pancakes. I prefer mine well done, i.e., as brown as a walnut shell and these pancakes did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked, massive (I couldn't finish a short stack) and delicious. My husband enjoyed his BLT, as well. When I'm back in the area, we'll definitely stop in again.
google avatar

Ted K.

Yelp
For real....who makes a donut the size of a man hole cover???? This place. These donuts are crazy good and HUGE. Just get the Alaskan Donut...why waste life worrying about calories? Just get it. Really nice people...super helpful while I was there and answered all of my questions. I'll be back the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Once a month we stop in after a Saturday evening for a late night, early morning breakfast. We've had the privilege of having Mary as our server the past two times/so we walked in for a third and requested her. She's professional, has a great personality and that's why we keep coming back. Huck Finn's is lucky to have such an asset to their team! Keep it up!

M. M.

Yelp
I honestly can't complain about the food but, an incident happened that turned me off from ever wanting to go to this place again. The busboy spilled a glass of ice water on me. He apologized but I expected a courtesy offer of some sort. When it wasn't offered, I inquired about it. Not that I needed it, but at least offer. Instead, I was treated with disdain. The waitress said that she couldn't do anything about it and the person at the cash register said, "accidents happen." I left the waitress a tip anyway. Karma won't be nice to either of these people.

Kelly R.

Yelp
Nice place for breakfast, Tasty, very fast service Absolutely beautiful pastries. Warm environment.

Corla H.

Yelp
This restaurant has excellent customer service great food. Short wait time to eat. Very clean easy parking attentive staff. Great eating spit 24 hours a day

Yelp
Service is always good. A must stop at anytime going to or from Midway International AirPort.

Beverly B.

Yelp
Upon visiting tonight my friend and I ordered the breaded pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes, along with a cup of soup (soup came with dinner). Pork tenderloin was as tough as a boot so it was sent back and we did not want anything else. Upon paying the bill we noticed that we were charged for the dinners. A conversation with the owner (rude) in which he charged us for the soup and attempted to charge for the mashed potatoes (made with water) which we did not eat. This is stike number 2 & 3 as the first was a breakfast where I was served heels of the bread for my toast. As with everything quality has gone down but the price is up!! Won't give them anothet chance!

Yelp
Usually I enjoy my time spent at Huck Finn. My Waitress (I think her name was Carrie) was great. I enjoyed my meal, but my friend did not. Her cream of chicken soup was extremely salty. She told the waitress. The waitress ask would she like anything else and offered her a salad. She excepted the salad. Upon eating the salad she found herself chewing on plastic. Once again she let the waitress know. The waitress went and got the mgr. He was rude to her when she complained about her food. She had a turkey club sandwich and fries also. So the mgr. says to her what would you like for me to do. She said my meal should be compt. He snatched her meal up and never returned . He didn't apologize or anything to her. I was in shock. I've never witness anything of this nature at one of my favorite restaurants. The Mgr. needs to be better trained when it comes to how you treat customers. This happen on Sunday June 23rd, 2024 @ 3:30pm

Yelp
I ordered the meatloaf sandwich and this is what I got! This is not meatloaf it's some sort of a processed meat that does not taste good at all! Please if your going to offer meatloaf please Serve meatloaf!
google avatar

Alesha W.

Yelp
Excellent service and the food was fresh and delicious. We had a great server and she was well attentive to our needs and came to our table enough times without overdoing it. I had to stop and get some of the famous donuts before I left and got 1/2 dozen of the old fashion and they were AMAZING!!!!

Maura P.

Yelp
It's not nice to rush people who have been there for, 25 minutes, 30 minutes or so? Out of their table. And having the waitress roll her eyes because she didn't want to make my husband a banana split? The last time we went here was just...odd. And rude. Usually we have a nice time here. We'll try again and I'll change my review if all goes well. Servers and bus boys...please be kind to your paying customers (....this shouldn't have to be said)

Maricela S.

Yelp
Service was horrible. Never going to this restaurant EVER. The waitress was more concerned talking to her friends than bringing our order. The server forgot to bring my drink. When it was brought up to her, she got mad. She came back and made a rude comment and almost slammed the drink on the table. I told my husband what just happened?? I'm not drinking that. I told the manager, and they said she is a good one and did nothing. I was like, WOW. I was a waitress and I understood the pressures of the job. I am patient, but this was ridiculous. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. I didn't want to pay for spit in my food. NOT A FAMILY RESTAURANT, I was so embarrassed my kids had to witness such crap.
google avatar

Jake F.

Yelp
An Oak Lawn staple. Open 24 hours. A must stop for those late nights or late mornings. The service is always quick and friendly no matter how busy it is, while the food deserves more credit when compared to other local joints. Love this place.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
I have never experienced a server here who wasn't authentically friendly and pleasant. The food is very tasty and the portions are reasonable. You will leave here satisfied and NOT feeling like you will burst at the seams. I really have not had anything that was bad here. Anything you decide upon is guaranteed to be solid. My favorite AM meal is the corned beef hash. My favorite PM meal is the Swiss and beef melt. One of my favorite items ANYWHERE is their apple fritter grilled up with butter. If you try this once, you will be hooked for life. (as I clearly am)

Colleen H.

Yelp
My order was pretty simple. Patty melt with well done fries. What I got was a burger on white bread and cold soggy fries. My son got sick and threw up before we even finished. My wife and I had stomach issues for the rest of the night. They over charged us, and when we asked about it they said the prices went up. But they did not change the menu. They also no longer take charge cards or debit cards. They are cash only. Needless to say I will not be going back. The place was pretty empty and I can see why!!!
