Best Bagels in New York City, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"In the contemporary fashion, the bagels are big at this modest store near Hudson Yards, with clear, distinct flavors. A sunflower-seed bagel, for example, features a scatter of unsalted seeds, making a bagel that’s not only beautiful to look at, but with a subtle nutty flavor. The cream cheese collection is distinctive, too, including lots of low-fat and vegan varieties among the dozens of choices." - Robert Sietsema

I moved away from the city many years ago and came back for a trip. This hit the spot. I knew I just wanted a good bagel and they delivered. Loved the quickness of ordering or to put it in simple terms the no BS local approach. Got me my food clean place to eat it your not on the go. Staff was clean and friendly, and food came out within 2 minutes even though the line was out the door. Couldn’t recommend more. Also a nice morning walk off Times Square. I will say if you’re an anxious orderer maybe study the menu before approaching the counter. The no BS order style freaked my friend who’s not used to city pace. She thought they were mad at her lol!

Google
Clean facility with lots of bagel and topping options. They also offer panini's and bagged snacks. They were generous with the cream cheese. I had an everything bagel with jalapeño spread. It was slighly tart and very mild, great for anyone who wants the jalapeño flavor without the heat.

Google
Bagel is good, service was good. Price is ridiculous. 5.99 for a plain bagel with plain cream cheese is out there. Ok…let’s say this paying for your Manhattan rent…why is the AC not working? It’s 85 degrees outside and super humid. I can pay more, but for what?

Google
great bagel. i got the egg bagel with tofu cream cheese (baseline bagel choice for comparing). super fluffy and great tofu cream cheese. bagels had good air bubbles showing they had risen well. this was a shot in the dark spot, and although a bit pricey they delivered a super solid bagel. add to the list if you’re in the area.

Google
Opens at 6am and the interior is very clean and great to dine in if it’s cold outside. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Will offer to help you with your order. Had the Ruben bagel and the coleslaw they put in it goes really well with the roast beef and would definitely be back again if I’m in the area.

We stopped here for a quick bite during our visit. The bagels were warm, so soft, and chewy. The service was quick as well

Google
Hudson Bagel - New York ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I visited Hudson Bagel for breakfast, and it was an amazing experience! The bagels were incredibly fresh, perfectly baked, and absolutely delicious. The toppings were generous, and the flavors were spot on. The staff was friendly and welcoming, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. If you’re looking for a great bagel spot in New York, Hudson Bagel is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Google
While on a trip to NYC a few weeks ago we stopped in (we've never had a NYC bagel) but this shop did NOT disappoint! I would recommend!!

Yelp
Service is really friendly, portions are very generous, and finally a warm, flavorful bagel! Busy, but pleasant atmosphere, but kinda pricey.

Yelp
The bagels here are very soft, but I felt that mine was not toasted quite enough. I got an everything bagel with a garlic herb cream cheese which I thought was delicious. There are plenty of tables here and service moves pretty quickly.

Yelp
This is small bagel shop off ninth avenue that makes fresh bagels and has a variety of spreads. I went in on a late Sunday morning and got a toasted Asiago bagel with plain cream cheese and two of the variety cookies and a small coffee. It was pretty empty when k walked in but by the time I ordered, paid and got my food, every single seat was taken which was a bummer. I walked around for a bit until I found a park to enjoy my bagel but by then it was already cold, my coffee was cold and I couldn't enjoy the full flavors. The Asiago bagel didn't taste freshly made and the cheese was hard and difficult to chew. It was nice to have a sweet flavor of the cookies on the side but overall, it wasn't memorable at all.

Yelp
The bagels themselves are decent enough but the last several times I've gone they consistently get my order wrong.

Yelp
We (a group of six, differing ages and tastes) were on our way to one place for bagels, then decided to stop here instead. Should be rated higher, in my opinion. Service was courteous, fast. Had room to sit together (though we lucked out during a brief breakfast rush). Bagels were great. Ample shmear-to-bagel ratio. Decent prices. Area was clean.

Yelp
Stopped here for a bagel a few weeks ago. Was not super impressed. The cream cheese was average and the bagels were not great compared to others in the area. Would go somewhere else
google avatar

Clarizza A.

Yelp
Not bad bagels. The blueberry cream cheese here is not sweet compared to other places and is a little sour. Same for the jalapeño cream cheese. I'd probably try for other places w better cream cheese.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
Ordered an everything bagel with tofu cream cheese and tomatoes and I loved how soft the bagel was, but I think either the bagel or the cream cheese (perhaps both) would've been much better if it was saltier. The everything bagel didn't have any flecks of salt at all so I wish it had some flaky salt on top.

Yelp
I was craving a bagel for breakfast, and this was one of the few bagel spots near my hotel. From my first impression, there was a good amount of seating indoors and outdoors. The space was also pretty clean. My order was taken quickly and I paid for it at the register. I appreciated the fast service both in line and while waiting for my order, the whole process took less than 10 minutes. I ordered an Everything Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese and Smoked Salmon. It was delicious and I loved that they did not skimp on the cream cheese. However, I don't think this bagel was worth $17.99. I feel like there are much more reasonably priced bagels elsewhere, so I am not sure if I would return again.

Yelp
Had to grab a classic New York bagel for the road and this place was perfect. The staff was helpful and provided suggestions. They were engaging and made us laugh with small talk. The place was extremely clean and offer a few tables inside to grab a quick breakfast. Wish I could have tried more things on the menu but they have something for everyone from tofu cream cheese to a classic everything bagels with lox, red onions, tomato, and capers.

Yelp
The service was excellent as were the bagels and smear! Next time we are in NYC and in Hells Kitchem specifically we will definitely stop by!

Yelp
Last breakfast before I head out of town. I took a stroll over here to pick up a bagel and coffee. The bagel itself was decent (everything bagel), but they were very skimpy on the veggie cream cheese. The coffee... It was just ok. I've only had ok coffee in NY so far. Maybe just a different way of making coffee over here.

Calli D.

Yelp
One of the best bagels i've had in nyc! loved and would definitely return! Service was great despite the long line and their orange juice is top notch!!
google avatar

Dave B.

Yelp
Bagels were a mixed batch literally, I got a dozen half were small and hard the other half was fresh and plump
google avatar

Isabelle S.

Yelp
Incredible bagels! Very great service and coffee as well. Small shop but plenty of seating.

Yelp
The Nova Lox and Everything Bagel combination, toasted with all the fixings, is a definite standout. Your taste buds will thank you as the fresh, delicious lox melts in your mouth with every bite. It's clear that the Hudson Bagel Shop is dedicated to using only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients to make their food. Overall, the Hudson Bagel Shop is a great place to stop for a quick breakfast, brunch or lunch. With excellent service, fresh and delicious food, and a warm, friendly atmosphere, this establishment is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
A local perspective review: We used to go here each Sunday but not anymore after today. This place advertises jumbo bagels and definitely used to have "jumbo" bagels but not anymore. Lately the bagels have been smaller or average size, there is hardly any seasoning on the everything bagel (90% sesame seed) the cinnamon bagel is flat. Unfortunately there is really nowhere else in the area that sell bagels, but next Sunday we will be taking the extra walk to Russ and Daughters.

Yelp
I walked in 7/6/23 between 6:30am & 7am ordered 2 eggs over easy with turkey bacon & large coffee w half & half honey on the side to stay on a platter or paper plate. I got scrambled eggs burned turkey bacon. They pushed it into a small container. I told the guy behind the counter the Hispanic man w his back turned the order was wrong I had ordered 2 eggs over easy, turkey bacon, & a whole wheat bagel well toasted not too much butter. I ordered on a platter/or plate I was eating it in house. Sounds trivial but it was his attitude right from the beginning. He said, that's how we do it. This is not a restaurant. I said, I've been coming here since they opened & no one has ever been rude to anyone or that I've ever witnessed. He replied, " I don't give a S--t I don't know what this man problem is or was but he continued with his profanities & direct attack. In the past they have always been very cordial & accommodating. I paid $15.22 for 2 eggs they scrambled, over done, & turkey bacon over cooked. I always order take out which is double in price with all the added fees after Covid. The worse was when this man told me to go F myself & other profanities. In front of his other workers which btw one of them gave me a look as to say I'm sorry. The young lady at the register apologized too while I was eating. I told the man in the picture who wears glasses, & a very thin beard desperately needs customer service skills & that's not the way to treat a customer. He continued, "I don't give a shit you B---h., F you. All because my order was wrong, & I asked for a paper plate or a platter? Really? Which he responded "this is not a restaurant". Again he continued to use profanity over & over turned his back & continued working. The coward that he is! Frankly I'm very surprised that he's Hispanic because All the Hispanic men that work there are always cordial. His machismo & sexism was abundant. I've been going there for years & when I go in I always say, "Buenos Dias", they always respond pleasantly back. Unfortunately I will never go or order from Hudson Bagel again - Btw the young lady behind the counter at the register young, long black hair was very sweet, nice & the other guys were too. It was only this one guy that kept his back turned wears glasses close beard easy to identify. I know these days it's hard to get good people good service because of Covid. Hiring is difficult I would know I own a business. I've been living in the neighborhood for 67 years, I'll just go to Amy's where everyone is pleasant, polite & gives good service. This man is a coward all while he spewed his profanities he kept his back turned. I wonder what his mother would think of him. I have a 29 year old son & he has never spoken to a women like this. He's cultured educated & brought up to respect women. I hope he doesn't talk to his mother, sisters, daughters aunts girlfriend like this. People have bad days I know this but people can be difficult but to blow up over an incorrect order & then to say what he said loudly & when another customer walked in shows the man does not belong behind a serving counter. My day started out badly but thanks to the young lady who kept apologizing so sweet she turned my day around .

Andrew M.

Yelp
Terrible, disrespectful manager. The manager actually tried to gaslight me by saying that the literally charred black bagel he wanted me to accept was not burned. I declined and got a refund. Ridiculous. Very rude and disrespectful. I live in the neighborhood and won't be going back. So I headed up to Pick a Bagel on 53rd and 8th. MUCH better.

Yelp
Hudson Bagel on 9th avenue is a great place for anyone craving an authentic New York City bagel experience. You can find a wide assortment of bagels and all of the NYC staples like bacon, egg, and cheese, and delicious lox. The bagels themselves are perfectly chewy on the inside and have a satisfyingly crispy exterior. Highly recommended for anyone in the area!

Yelp
Best in Manhattan! Great bagels! Great service and consistent Always clean, everyone is super nice and attentive! And orders for delivery always perfect
google avatar

Gannon M.

Yelp
Spectacular! Authentic! I catered from Hudsons and they went above and beyond! Amazing breakfast! My highest recommendation! Order the H2!
google avatar

Ian C.

Yelp
Yum. I'm an out-of-town regular at Hudson Bagel grabbing breakfast here at least once whenever I'm in town. Fresh, clean, and always served with a smile. Go early to avoid the 8AM rush
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I genuinely have no idea why the reviews are so low for this place. I have been to so many bagel places in NY so far and Hudson is my tried and true bagel shop that I have been to at least 5+ times now. They're so efficient here and not as impatient as other staff in the other shops I've been to. The bagels here are extremely fluffy. I've tried their cream cheeses and breakfast sandwiches and all of it has been phenomenal - I highly recommend the avocado bacon egg cheese sandwich! Loved every bagel I've ever gotten from here!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best bagels anywhere! If you're in the Times Square area, definitely worth the short walk to this amazing place!
google avatar

Vishnu G.

Yelp
This was a pretty average deli. I got a whole wheat everything bagel with cream cheese, which was just alright and came at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
There is nothing like a New York City bagel and so I popped out early this morning and grabbed one to eat and two to take home. Because my wife needs a reminder of how great they are. These are solid and thick, firm crust and soft interior. My "to eat" bagel was an everything with sundried tomato cream cheese. A very healthy portion of sharp tasting cream cheese on the bagel went down like a treat. Good toppings, perfectly toasted, still warm when I got it back to the hotel. Friendly service and good food. That's five stars for me. [Review 15705 overall - 296 in New York - 1209 of 2021.]

Jordan M.

Yelp
Good bagels, large menu, lots of variety. The cream cheese quantity is spot on too, just enough that it's a bit of a hazard to eat on the go

Al S.

Yelp
Charges $1 extra after 11 am. Mediocre food and mediocre service for ridiculous price.
google avatar

Charlotte W.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing bagels, and the way they move the line through is a model of efficiency. Best $4 I ever spent!!! Yum!!

Yelp
I was in the mood for a bagel breakfast and decided to head over to Hudson Bagels. It was about 9a when I got there and there were already 7 people ahead of me. The line however, moved quickly and the staff was not wasting any time. I decided to order a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese and lox and onion along with a small coffee. While waiting, I saw that this is one of the establishments that still has seating for patrons. Since the pandemic, most places that cater to quick meals/take out have done away with in house seating. it is a large space, clean with the counter to order on one side and drinks and chips on the other side. The seating is towards the front of the restaurant. i got my bagel sandwich and coffee and sat down. it was delicious and a really full sandwich, no skimping. It is reasonably priced for the area and this staff is accommodating. In addition to bagels, I saw that they also have assorted pastries. I would recommend and return.

Yelp
It's the best bagel I have had! Loved the chewiness of the bagel and it was bursting with flavor. The scallion creamcheese was a delight, and was definitely perfect with the bagel! I've also tried the bagel with smoked salmon and creamcheese. I wasn't able to eat it right away, so it stayed in the fridge overnight. Microwaved it for 15 seconds, and it was still delicious!

Crystal G.

Yelp
Delicious bagels. Fast paced with not a lot of seating area but great spot! Friendly staff and service!
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
A pretty decent bagel all things considered. I like the amount of cream cheese included but the bagel itself was a little tougher than I like.
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
I've been coming here for several years because I like their chicken salad. The bagels are a little small but taste good. Today I ordered an everything bagel toasted with double egg, double cheese, and bacon. Since it cost more when you order double egg and double cheese, I watched as they made my bagel sandwich. I noticed that they didn't give me the double egg and double cheese so I walked to the back and told the guy at the Grill that it was supposed to be double egg and double cheese. At the same time, the gentleman who took my order, walked back and confirmed what I had just said. Suddenly an angry guy named of Vincente walks up and tells me to move along. I explained that I was telling them that they had made a mistake on my order, and I was trying to get it fixed. Again, he told me to move along. Once again, I explained that I was trying to get my order made correctly. He told me to move. I asked if he was the owner and he said he was the manager. I asked him if he didn't want me to come there and give them my business anymore and he said he could care less. So I won't be back to Hudson bagels in the future. It's a bad business move. And Vincente needs to learn how to properly manage a business.

Mike G.

Yelp
Ordered their typical egg&ham with a sesame bagel...it's was average. Price was okay...
google avatar

Stephen A.

Yelp
Not amazing bagels but decent, and the only real bagel place in this part of Hell's Kitchen. The staff is friendly and work fairly efficiently. They still have a problem where the person working the register is the only person making coffees so there tends to be a backup when anyone is ordering anything but a standard drip coffee. Be prepared to wait a bit if you walk in here.
google avatar

Jess H.

Yelp
So good!! Service was quick, workers are friendly. It was quite busy when we arrived but everyone in my party loved their bagels! They had so many cream cheese flavors to choose from too but I kept it simple with their nova special: everything bagel, regular cream cheese, lox, capers, onions, and tomatoes. 10/10! Loved it!

Nyc E.

Yelp
Mmmm.... Great service... fast... hot... chewy bagel. Too chewy literally hurt my jaw eating it. I had high hope for this place. Everything else was on point so perhaps I'll try 1 more time...
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Good bagels, good list of options and the breakfast menu such as waffles, etc is good too. Prices are very fair for NYC.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
I smuggled thirteen of these bad boys in my suitcase just so I could load my freezer. Are these the best bagels in NY? I dont know, maybe? Maybe not? But I ordered a sesame bagel with lite veggie cream cheese and all I know is that sandwich (and particularly, that bagel) is the best thing within a 500 mile radius of where I live. so if there is better, please dont tell me I'm already in love

Swetha K.

Yelp
We enjoyed these bagels! I got the onion bagel with the garlic herb cream cheese and it was filling and delicious. My husband got the garlic bagel with the sundried tomato cream cheese and it was also flavorful and tasty. They put a ton of cream cheese on the bagels. We went on a weekday morning and service was quick. The only downside was that each bagel was about $6 - I don't think it was worth the price.
google avatar

Jillian R.

Yelp
Place was packed on a Sat morning when I got there around 11, but the line moved quick. Coffee, bagel and a (huge) side of fruit was about $15, and everything tasted great. They have seats inside and some outside, but I didn't stay to eat (all tables were full).
google avatar

Gregory B.

Yelp
Amazing !! The Croissants and Bagels are made fresh. Get there early so you can get them hot out of the oven . Like around 6:30am. My egg and tomato and avocado breakfast sandwich on this homemade croissant was AMAZING !!!

Jessie B.

Yelp
This place serves up some really tasty bagels, so fresh and flavorful. Awesome egg sandwiches as well!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
All around GOOD!! Good selection of bagels and bakery! Staff eager to take your order and keep the line moving.

Andrea M.

Yelp
This place is overpriced and gross. Do not eat here. We ate at other bagel places that are cheaper and bagels and smears taste better. We got the bagel with plain cream cheese and it tasted like pure butter. When we asked the manager about it and told him it was not good he was rude and didn't care. Skip this place and find a different bagel shop in NYC. There are better ones, we ate at them. If I could give this place negative stars I would. I had chicken salad on an everything bagel, plain cream cheese on an everything bagel and a side of fries and it cost me $20 and change . Way overpriced compared to the other bagel shops we went to.
google avatar

Ari A.

Yelp
I am the harshest critic when it comes to bagels... I wanted to love this place. Who can deny their favorite food joint opening in their neighborhood, unless it's just not that good. If you are not a bagel conoisseur, or are just looking for a quick sandwich place, Hudson bagel is great. The staff is friendly, prices reasonable and a decent amount of seating. If on the other hand, you are like me and were hoping for a new bagel joint that's not over 1.5 miles away, I'm sorry to say this place just ain't it. The bagels are large and doughy without a hard outer shell. I'll continue to stick with essa, H&H, absolute & Brooklyn bagel when I've got a hankering.

Kelsey S.

Yelp
Great!! we were hesitant based on reviews but went with three young kids and the bagels were delicious!! coming from a family that eats a LOT of bagels. there's also a place to sit which is hugely appreciated. would absolutely come again.
