"Huettenbar, Lincoln Square. Feels like it’s straight out of Germany and always a good time. Lincoln Square is a german-influenced neighborhood and this bar fits right in with its german beers and spirits. It has an old world charm and feels like it’s been there since the Chicago fire, but it was established in 1985. It's always crowded, but a good kind of crowded with great people. The enormous front windows are almost always open, where you can sit on stools and watch the action on Lincoln Ave. During Lincoln Square’s two festivals, Maifest and Octoberfest, this bar becomes a focal point of the festivities. Tip: There’s no food here—only drinks—so don’t come hungry."

"While Lincoln Square reconfigures during the pandemic — across the street from the Brauhaus space, the Huettenbar has quietly closed (owners hold to hope that it could eventually reopen)." - Naomi Waxman

This place is a real classic throwback memory of the traditional German bars that used to be scattered all over Lincoln Square. The beer was served nice and cold, and we really felt like we were sitting in a German Pub. Parking can be a little bit challenging in Lincoln Square, but it definitely is worth it to go into this old school German style pub.

Google
Good experience! The beer selection was very extensive if you like beer from Germany (which I totally do). Service wasn't the most engaging, but wasn't objectionable either. Not so busy on a Monday night, mostly a light after work crowd. Overall I definitely suggest this place!

You want German, you got it. Good German beer selection, rustic look, no food just drinks. Great place to pop in get a beer and enjoy your time.

A cozy place to enjoy great beers & people, the feel was a very relaxed one; walked in & felt as though I was joining friends. Bartender was fantastic & genuine as well as helpful in guiding beer selection. Love the dark wood & paintings. They don't have food...but who needs food with a good selection of German beers?

Google
Nice bar. Fast service and cozy. Good selection of German beers. It's bring your own food so grab a pizza or a bag of tacos and go to town. They'll have Chicago's big games on but otherwise bring a friend or post up at the bar for conversation or distraction.

Google
Tons of fun. Great place with a solid selection of German beers. Enjoyable atmosphere. This is the Lincoln Square bar to go to. Other bars are wonderful but they have specific appeals. This place is a through and through gem.

Went here with a few friends one night. It was a lot of fun and they had a ton of great beer! Atmosphere is good. The bartender we had was great and chatty too, which I like. I would bring friends here. It's a great local bar.

Google
Great little bar that makes you feel like you're in Germany. They don't have any "cheap beer" choices, which is the only reason they're not 5 stars. I like a place that pushes local brews, but I also like to have all options present.

Yelp
There are airport bars I prefer to this one. About as cookie-cutter as it gets in terms of vibe and selection. I mean, there are taprooms/breweries all over the place up here so having a bunch of beer/bubbly things isn't exactly unusual. The staff/service is fine but, man, they're not given a lot to work with in terms of the space. I guess this is perfect spot if you find yourself walking around Lincoln Square thinking, "you know, I'd love it here if it was MORE like Naperville".

Yelp
Amazing craft beers and incredible service! Right in the heart of Lincoln Square, this bar has a cozy neighborhood vibe and friendly bartenders who know what's good! I'd highly recommend this spot to anybody: first dates, old friend meetups, and everyone in between. Make this part of your next night out in Lincoln Square!

Yelp
We're so excited to have a new taproom in Lincoln Square! Easily accessible, lots of comfy chairs, and great beer options. I especially appreciate the smaller pours that allow me to try more. Today, opening day, there are 3 marzen/Oktoberfests on tap. It's awesome! Excited to see this place flourish!

Yelp
It is ironic that this business claims to be community minded... This place could not be more generic. It looks like a hotel bar. They took a jewel of the neighborhood and turned it into a rhinestone.

Yelp
Always love stopping in here for a drink when out and about in lincoln square. I think the beer selections are great and bartenders are friendly. As much as I miss huttenbar, I think it's great to have a taproom here in its spot. Not sure why so many negative reviews about the renovation, it's a new spot.

Yelp
Profoundly disappointed! The took over one of the best bars in Chicago...and took out most of the actual bar? Seriously, it was one of the best bars to sit at around. The rest of the interior is like a some sad college townie bar with terrible lighting, nothing on the walls, and just a depressing "whatever" vibe. Also, bars that charge tax on top of the quoted price are big peeve of mine. I hate being told my already not-inexpensive beer is one thing and then being charged more on top. Just figure the tax into the price!

Alex P.

Yelp
Great place to grab a local craft beer. Several varieties with 18 beers on tap. Enjoyed sitting on the patio and the bartenders were nice as can be.

Maria A.

Yelp
You went 80% and got distracted. I agree with the reviews on decor...instead of saying "you are welcome here" it shouts I don't care. Spend a tad more on decor and you have a gold mine: dim the lights, get better tables and chairs, and personality on the wall. Stand for something. Service is good, beer is good...excellent decision to put in a patio, but even this could be more inviting: lights, planters or anything to warm it up.

Ko M.

Yelp
The beer list is fantastic, and is constantly being updated with local breweries for the changing seasons. The service is wonderful. The decor is lacking. Simply adding light fixtures with character / color, or standard bar neon signs would help. The bathrooms are what killed it for me. There are 2 unisex bathrooms. Both smelled equally awful. I picked one. The floor, toilet and walls had clearly never been cleaned. There were brown smudges on the floor and pubes everywhere. I debated going in the alley and would have if it's wasn't February. In summary: empty yourself fully before you go to this place.

Yelp
Really enjoy this bar. It's not as charming as huttenbar but I liked the beer selection. No frills.

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I'm so sad about this renovation. Lincoln Square Tap Room should have conferred with the folks who did a Carol's Pub rehab. Huettenbar was one of the greatest bars in the city, and the renovation pays zero homage to that beautiful space. Historic murals destroyed, furniture replacements are cheap and tasteless. Jukebox music is now a blaring tv. Ick. No IPA's on draft. Waitress was pleasant and lovely.

Paul M.

Yelp
Some interesting beers on tap, but a bland atmosphere. Almost empty yet needed to wait for several minutes before getting server's attention. Will likely pass on this place in future.

William T.

Yelp
I don't think I have seen a worse renovation. This by any standards is sterile, soulless and just cheap. It is tragic that such a warm space like the Huettenbar was utterly destroyed; however this would be a generic soulless place no matter where they put it. It is all around just a tragedy on all fronts. Not a single german beer and a weird draft assortment rounds off the odyssey of pain that this place is..

Mike W.

Yelp
Fantastic spot, great atmosphere, and authentic neighborhood vibe. Beer selection is great. I try to stop by twice a week. The staff takes a lot of pride in the business and ensures the customers are well taken care of.

B J.

Yelp
Why? Why take one of the most charming (and inefficient and oddball) bar spaces in the city and turn it into a cookie-cutter (and a pretty lousy cookie-cutter, at that), charmless joy-suck devoid of anything resembling a personality or point of view? Even the friggin' beer list is haphazard..."local" isn't a big enough idea in 2022 to differentiate yourself from dozens of other, far superior joints within a couple-mile radius. An absolute disappointment. But at least the people behind this sad missed opportunity are deploying the same business model in other neighborhoods across Chicago. There is literally no reason a bar should be this bad, uninteresting and uninspiring. Just awful. Huettenbar is dead. Long live Huettenbar.

Kaitlynn K.

Yelp
Yes, it's not Huettenbar. It's sad that the bar closed, but this space is still really nice. The service is fantastic, it's nice and open and breezy, and it's really cool to have such local brews. I think as it finds its groove and people give it a real chance, it'll be a really great neighborhood staple. Also, nice chairs and tables. Felt very comfortable. I'm excited to go back!

Robert L.

Yelp
Huttenbar was a staple in Lincoln Square. It had character, charm, warmth, and was inviting. The only thing this bar has is location. Like, why change anything at all, other than a sign? It feels like a sterile operating room. If that is your thing, then go. Last time I walked by there were plenty of empty bar stools...

Carri C.

Yelp
Space was clean with minimalist decor. Nice, big open windows in front. Solid beer list. Staff was friendly. A little different vibe than Huttenbar, which was one of my favorite bars in the city. I urge them to allow well behaved dogs, it would give it more of a neighborhood feel and having something Huttenbar never had. Hansa Clipper allows dogs and it is fun for all.

Yelp
While waiting for our table to open up at Garcia's my fiancé and I decided to go to Lincoln Square tap room for a beer while we wait. When we entered the bar was completely empty besides the bartender and a server standing at the corner of the bar looking at a tablet. Bartender saw us and we took a seat at a table close to the door. We scanned the menu and decided on what to drink. While waiting neither the male bartender or female server acknowledged us or approached us if we would like to order anything. While waiting another couple came in and they sat at the bar. The bartender spoke to them immediately when the sat down. The female server broke off from what she was doing with the bartender. At this moment we've been sitting for a few minutes, she proceeded to just stand next to what I believed was the serving station just next to the bar. At this moment we decided to leave when she couldn't even acknowledge us or make any effort to help us out. Really a big turn off to this new bar in our area, won't be going back there in which it looked as it could use the business
