My oldest son and his wife came down to San Antonio to celebrate my 65th birthday. They wanted to try this place out, as they are going through a tiki bar phase right now. We made a reservation for 5:30, and when the whole family was ready, we headed down to the Riverwalk.
We were a bit early, so we walked around for a while waiting for a text to tell us our table was ready. The text never came, so we went back at 5:30 and were taken right to our table.
Now, I need to say that they were having the Beachbum Berry Presents: Sippin' Santa Pop-Up right now. I'm not sure we knew that when we headed down. They have a special holiday menu, but evidently their shipment of special holiday tiki glasses for the event did not get in yet. To make up for that, they served all drinks for $11, which was about $5 off.
They also did not have their regular food menu in place. But, when we asked about some of the things we had seen on the menu, the server told us we could get some of them. We ordered two plates of french fries, a crab roll, and a spam roll. I am not sure of the actual menu names.
The rolls came with two pieces on a plate. The crab roll came with a spicy dipping sauce. My youngest son and I each ate one of them and thought they were great. My older son and I each ate a piece of the spam roll. Older son hated it because it had cilantro. I LOVED IT and ordered two more plates of two so that my youngest son and daughter in law could try them. I could have eaten a dozen of them. Don't even ask me what's in them. It just all melded together to make a great flavor explosion.
Everyone had a couple of drinks, but me. I ordered the same drink my oldest got. It was called a Sippin' Santa. I really liked it, but MAN WAS IT STRONG. I drank half of it and passed it on to my youngest son. I was the driver and already felt half lit.
Our group also tried a Jingle Bird, Holiday on Ice, Sharkie's First Christmas, Merry Spritzman , and a Yuletide. The younger folks each had two different drinks and a Ginger Snapper shot. I think my wife just had a second Yuletide. They were all very "happy" when we left to go for dinner somewhere else.
Our server was fantastic. She explained things well and kept checking on us. The kids were really disappointed about the lack of tiki glasses, but her explanation and the discount offered took care of it. We had 9 drinks, so the discount for us was $45. I was paying. I didn't need a silly glass. The savings was better.
The place was well decorated. They nailed the tiki theme. I really liked it. It is pretty small, unless there are other rooms we didn't see. It was nearly empty when we got there, but packed when we left. The music was great and not too loud.
The youngers want to go back again when it is serving the regular menu. I would love to go back, but wish I wasn't picking up the tab. Y'all know I'm a poor retired school teacher on a fixed income. I'm not used to hanging out in night clubs for an hour and a half and dropping a couple of hundred dollars on drinks. But, like they say, "You can't take it with you." Might as well spend my money on my kids while I'm alive to have fun with them.
