10 Chicago Starters That Are The Main Event - Chicago - The Infatuation

"It’s easy to lose yourself in any variation of Galit’s silky waves of finely blended chickpeas. But this hummus ascends to a new level of dip glory when topped with tender cinnamon-braised brisket and roasted carrots. It’s smoky and savory, with just a hint of sweetness, and goes well with equally delicious housemade pita." - veda kilaru, john ringor, nick allen, veda kilaru, veda kilaru, john ringor, nick allen, john ringor, veda kilaru, veda kilaru, john ringor, john ringor, nick allen

Visiting from out of town and tried this place. Everything is homemade and very authentic. The hummus is amazing! I also had the chicken and rice which has the most amazing sumac seasoning. I love healthy treats so I ended with a date shake which was made with dates, cashews, and oat milk (no ice cream). It was just amazing! You must try it!

Google
Absolutely exceptional customer service and delicious food. I have travelled all over the world and have lived in a Middle East and I can comfortably say this is hands down one of the best places I have ever dined in. The customer service is truly unmatched. And the food? Delicious. From taste to presentation. Everything was PERFECT. We will be coming back and I highly recommend you paying Hummus and Pita a visit. You will not regret it. 100/10 recommend!

Google
Some of the best food I have had while in Kansas. The best hummus you will ever experience, so amazing. Hands down my favorite babaghanoush I have ever had. The baklava was divine. The service and hospitality was absolutely amazing and the kindest people you will ever meet. The owner was so wonderful and made you feel like family. We can’t wait to go back.

Google
Summary - Too expensive for ONE freakin kabob - Found a sticker in my food 🤢 We’ve eaten here since this place opened up on and off. Their food can be really good depending on what you order, but it’s getting really disappointing how much their prices have jumped since they opened. I ordered the entree Lamb Kabob Plate (dinner time if that matters) and apparently it’s $16 for just a single kabob and then some rice and salad….. that’s an insane price for a single kabob and some extras! The description of that item doesn’t say it’s only 1 kabob, so finding that when I got home was annoying. I would have ordered something else had I known. I also found a sticker still on some of my roasted veggies which was really gross 🤢 Not going back again, not worth the price anymore, and I don’t really like eating stickers, so.

Google
Food was absolutely delicious! The food never disappoints you. Lamb kebab, beef shawarma and Hummus You never get better than that. Owner behind the counter was super kind. Thank you for the real talk and advice for how to address the issue.

Google
Extremely welcoming as soon as you walk in the door. Very clean restaurant with an exceptional staff. Food was some of the best we have had. Falafels were amazing and the hummus was delicious. You can’t go wrong coming here

Google
I love everything about this place! It was definitely the best hummus I have ever had. We also tried the dolmas, chicken kabob, and Areyas and all were freaking amazing. Plus the staff is so welcoming and great at giving recommendations. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Google
The food and the service are great. I got frishawarma which was very good and I could really taste the garlic sauce. We also got gyro wrap, hummus and spicy shawarma. For sure we will come back.

Yelp
Ok, ok, ok. You always are a little skeptical when you see a place with a five star rating for a couple hundred reviews!?? For instance, can the place really be that good? Well, I could tell you that when we got here and got out of the car, You could smell the food! So good! Even Outside it was awesome, and we got excited. You open the door to find customers already lined up inside, but the register worked quickly to get through their orders. I think the lamb and beef are both great, and although I don't love chicken, my wife had their chicken Shawarma and it's really good you have to the hummus plate, and get the tabbouleh salad together. Dip your food in the hummus, then dip it in the tabbouleh salad, thank me later. The food is so good. It feels guilty, but it's not bad for you, I feel good after. I really wish I'd take pictures before, but at least you could see from the plate that Im a huge fan now!

Yelp
Based on my earlier amazing experience, I placed a small catering order for 4 portions of falafel. I was told when I had called before that it's better to place any type (big or small) catering orders in advance, so I called the day before 24 hours ahead and confirmed pickup for 4 PM. On the day of pickup, I called at 4:03 to let them know I was on the way, but each time the call went straight to voicemail. I reached at 4:23, only to find that my order wasn't ready. The person at the front counter was a bit impolite and said I was 23 minutes late, and that they only make the food once the customer arrives because "he doesn't want his food to get bad attention" and that those falafel just have to go in to the fryer and wouldn't take much time. That reasoning made no sense to me. If I'm placing a catering or to‑go order, the whole point is that it should be ready when I arrive and rather I gave them 23 extra minutes to keep it ready. Otherwise, I could have just ordered at the restaurant instead of planning a pickup!!! In the end, I waited another 14 minutes. This delay pushed back my other last min errands, and my guests ended up arriving before I could get home. What made it worse was the attitude the restaurant showed .. basically "take it or leave it"with no care at all about my time. I would have liked if they could have made this clear on the call previously that they would make the order when I arrive to keep it fresh and then I would have planned my day likewise and not to place small catering orders 24 hours in advance!!! For me, customer service matters just as much as the food. I am not complaining about the food quality at all. Other than owning up to their mistake if they had forgotten, they displayed a "do not care" attitude to protect the quality of their food. Sadly, this experience made me feel bad and ruined the rest of my day. I would definitely visit the restaurant but never place any catering orders going forward.

Yelp
Excellent food made with heart, soul, grit, and love for the cuisine. Everything tasted so clean and fresh. The real baba ghanoush and regular baba ghanoush were amazing. This place is a real gem.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic and delicious Mediterranean food in the Kansas City area, Hummus in Pita in Downtown Overland Park is a must-visit! From the moment we walked in, the cozy atmosphere and welcoming staff made the experience feel warm and inviting. We started with appetizers--of course, their house-made hummus and pita (some of the BEST I've ever had), a refreshing Fattoush salad, and flavorful, crispy kibbeh. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and clearly made with care. For mains, we sampled a little bit of everything: * The roasted garlic butter half chicken with rice was juicy and packed with flavor * The loaded shawarma fries were indulgent and so satisfying * The Gyro Hero was freshly made and delicious * And the mixed kebab platter gave us a great taste of their grilled specialties--every bite was amazing! We couldn't leave without dessert, and I'm so glad we didn't. The baklava was flaky and perfectly sweet, but the real show-stoppers were the Date Shake (so smooth and rich!) and their newest dessert, "Date Me Sweetly"--a heavenly mix of ice cream, baklava, and date. Absolutely divine! Overall, Hummus in Pita is a hidden gem serving up fresh, flavorful Mediterranean fare that hits the spot. Whether you're a local or just passing through, it's definitely worth checking out! Follow me on Instagram and TikTok to see full video of my experience - NEYAN VENTURES

Yelp
My wife and I went here with friends on a Thursday night. Not a lot of people were there so seating was easy to find. The customer service was amazing! For first timers, they gave us a scoop of their hummus which tasted amazing! I got the shwarma wrap and strawberry lemonade and for sure the best of both Ive had in a long time. Overall incredible experience and would recommend people to go!

Yelp
We found this thanks to TikTok. It was soooo good. The place and its decorations are super cute. Our group had: Gummus (spice gyro meat with hummus), Halloumi Sticks, Chicken Shawarma, Falafel, Arayes, and a date shake. We loved everything. My husband mentioned to the guy up front that if he had room at the end he was coming back for a date shake. When he eventually went back to order it there guy had it already made and said, "I knew you'd be back." Mind blown. I definitely think you should go

Yelp
Such a delicious locally ran Mediterranean shop!! My family and I stopped by for a casual dinner and we could smell the yummy food as we were walking up to it. The staff immediately welcomed us in and were patient as we took our time looking over the menu. They offer a WIDE variety of options such as gyros, shawarma, baklava, sandwiches, salads, kabobs, and all of the sides like baba ganoush, pita, falafel, tzatziki, fried halloumi cheese, and of course hummus. Of course we had to see if their bold statement of the best hummus in KC was true and let me just say, they are named HUMMAS and pita for a reason! The hummus was so fresh and flavorful, we were scrapping every last bit off the plate with the warm and fluffy pita. My chicken shawarma plate was just as flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The turmeric rice, tzatziki, and side salad were all great additions to my plate. We also got a side of their fried halloumi and it was SO warm, savory, and delicious....think a mediterranean mozzarella stick but even better with a date syrup drizzled on top for the perfect sweet and savory combo! If you are craving classic and bold mediterranean flavors definitely check out Hummus and Pita in Downtown OP!

Yelp
We ordered catering from here for my Grandpa's 100th birthday party and it was absolutely incredible. We had the party at the carriage house in the park directly next door to the restaurant which made for easy delivery. Our guests went back for seconds and thirds and couldn't stop raving about the amazing flavors in each dish! We ordered platters of beef gyro, chicken shawarma, rice, vegetables, greek salad, hummus, and pita. Medium platters of each item was plenty for 30 guests. The owner was so kind and such a pleasure to work with. We are beyond grateful for the food and hospitality. My grandma was Greek and so this was a special way to honor her at gpa's birthday party. We will be back on our next visit to KC!

Yelp
Love this place! Whether you're eating in house or picking it up to go, it's always amazing. The owner is very kind and hospitable and always lets us try new things that we probably wouldn't try on our own. And the hummus, omg the best I've ever had! My wife and I try to come every 4 weeks or so. Its that good!

Yelp
Love this spot! I've always admired the sign outside and decided to take the leap of faith and try it out. Basic / simple menu, was greeted by a sample of hummus, food came out quick and hot. Great fast casual dining with plenty of seating Vegan friendly
google avatar

Allison G.

Yelp
I had the chicken shawarma plate and it was very tasty! The staff was very welcoming & lets you try a sample of their hummus before ordering.
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and clean shop. It was a quick lunch stop for me and I took it to go. The gyro sandwich was alright. It wasn't as fresh tasting as I had hoped. Some of my lettuce was brown and my tomatoes were overripe. The tzatziki was very mild; I was hoping for a stronger flavor. The tzatziki was also only on the top half of my sandwich.
google avatar

Joanna S.

Yelp
Delicious!! When we walked in we were greeted with smiles and an offer to try the hummus. We got an order of the chicken shawarma plate for pickup and we loved every bite. We got some hummus and pita on the side and the hummus was probably the best I've ever had! It had a few different seasonings on top that took it over the top. Yum! Definitely want to come back here and eat outside. It's so cute!

June I.

Yelp
Great service, great food very delicious. Def coming back for more. I got a chicken gyro salad and pita bread and hummus.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! Wonderful little spot great for a casual meal or take out. Everything tastes and feels very authentic. We were greeted and offered a taste of hummus since it was our first time here. We ordered a tapa appetizer and beef arayas and everything was fantastic. Hands down the best falafel I've ever had.
google avatar

Jeanine W.

Yelp
Service was so friendly, helpful & fast. Food was amazing! Everything we tried was fresh and full of flavor. Love this cute little place & will definitely go back!

Lisa S.

Yelp
I loved their hummus. I just discovered their hummus does not contain peanuts, so if you think you taste peanuts, it doesn't. One employee thought it did, but I believe they misunderstood my question about peanut in the hummus. The hummus is fantastic! The homemade pita is fabulous, and I can't wait to go back and try their gluten-free pita. I've only had the gyro sandwich, and it was lovely. The local family business makes you feel good inside and out.
google avatar

Cyndy N.

Yelp
Amazing! First off, I must say I'm hesitant to try Mediterranean food anywhere. But this place was AMAZING. I got a chicken Shawarma plate with rice, salad, and sauce on the side. Then I got the baba ghanoush motabel with pita. The service was fast, friendly, and great! The owner was so nice and restaurant itself is clean and so well maintained, I love the home feeling walking into this restaurant. I would definitely recommend anyone to support a small business, especially Hummus and Pita!

Ambii T.

Yelp
I will most definitely go back. The women that are up front taking order was so nice and friendly make you feel welcome! The food was so good falafels so moist and good. The hummus was great as well everything was amazing.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
$15 dollars for 5 chicken nuggets on a stick(Kebab) and rice! i feel like the hummus and bread make up for the desigeny that all these folks give good reviews for. The Flavors are there but they should also bring down the price point. Chicken is cheap so are chickpeas. I won't order this ever again. Ill stick to only the sandwiches even then the price point is a bit high for what you get
google avatar

Ethan J.

Yelp
Amazing food. I've taken a few people there, and everyone loves it. The pita plate is unforgettable, made fresh every day and bursting with flavor. I've had the kabobs, gyros and Shawarma and never been disappointed. It's so good my kid asked for it when he was in the hospital!
google avatar

Sue J.

Yelp
All three above plus sweet accommodating folks. I am diabetic Greek/ mid eastern is def. On the menus. My hubby is beef/ gyro fan I prefer chicken shawarma. The hummus is home made. Will def go back even tho we are 80miles away.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent Mediterranean food! Very flavorful and good menu choices. Staff is welcoming and good about answering questions about menu options. It's a restaurant with a casual atmosphere, seating on the inside and outside.

Yelp
Food - darn good Service - good Ambiance - Small place best for takeout 1st time here today on 12/5/2023. Good remodeling from the Snack Shack that used to be here, still limited seating about 10 at most. Got the Spicy Gyro and Real Baba Ganoush to go. Very tasty spicy lamb pieces in a big pita round with really tasty tzatziki sauce, onions, lettuce, tomatoes. Plenty of Pita triangles included to dip in EVOO @ home or the Baba Ganoush.

Jim F.

Yelp
This is the place to go for Middle-Eastern-style Mediterranean. Everything is delicious! I particularly like the spicy gummus appetizer: a beautifully presented and generous serving of hummus, mildly-spiced grilled gyros, and perfect pita, a true delight!! The staff is gracious and welcoming, the space is clean and wonderfully decorated, and everything is unpretentious. Do yourself a favor and try it today, you won't regret it.

Mark H.

Yelp
Service was good. Immediate attentive and friendly. The food was even better. Fresh. The kabobs and vegetables were perfectly grilled
google avatar

Savannah H.

Yelp
We came here for a quick lunch and sat in the outdoor seating area. We got the tapa platter and two chicken shawarma sandwiches. Overall I really liked what we received. Everything tasted like it was made in house (with the exception of the pita). The dolma and falafel are some of the best I've had in the area. The falafel was packed with herby garlic flavor and the dolma was topped with balsamic which I haven't seen before. Both were flavorful and fresh, the baba ghanoush and hummus were also tasty and well seasoned. The chicken shawarma was moist and served with a side of garlic sauce. The staff were attentive and friendly. I can understand why some people mention small portion sizes and price (our meal came out to about 35 bucks) but we walked away quite full with food leftover. For an in-house made meal that is seasoned and cooked well, I thought it was worth it.
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
Such amazing flavors and very light does not leave you feeling sick. Good generous portions for a good price and very clean. I have to say I used to think Jerusalem cafe was the best Greek type food but Hummus and Pita is my new favorite. I'm pretty sure we met the owner was super nice guy gave great recommendations. I would highly recommend and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Virginia M.

Yelp
After soccer one night we picked Hummus and Pita. Our 11 year old also loved Mediterranean so it was an easy pick and the reviews were great. The food was served hot and delicious. The portions were a little small but what we got was so delicious and we were extremely pleased. We will be back for sure. The service was great. The location was good, just a little away from everything else so parking was good, and ambiance was just eh. But the food made up for it.
google avatar

Yelp
We just moved to the area and found Hummus and Pita as a recommendation from Yelp! Such a cute place! It is obviously a neighborhood favorite because people were walking in and out picking up orders! Always a good sign. I got the gyro salad and my partner got the gyro plate. There are several other dishes I want to try on the menu. My gyro salad was yummy. I was actually pleased with the salad dressing. I often throw it away and just use a little olive oil and lime but this was good and thank goodness, not overly sweet! I also got some tzatziki on the side and it was good! They put a lot of yummy veggies in the salad and plenty of gyro which is very flavorful. The same was true with the gyro plate. My partner really enjoyed it! The employees were super friendly! We ordered online for pickup and were given a time about 45 mins out. They called and said they could have it ready in about 15 if we wanted to pick it up early. That was great for us! When we arrived, we were welcomed with a big smile! Nice! My only suggestion would be if there is any way to list the ingredients in the dish online, it would be great! There were a lot of banana peppers in my salad but as much as I like peppers, I don't like banana peppers. I just pulled them out, but I would have just said to leave them off if that option existed. That doesn't affect my opinion of this gem! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Today during my lunch break I had a chance to check out Hummus and Pita. Service was amazing and the food was great !! So I never eat Hummus because it's never been something I found to be good . But after being offered a sample of the hummus and pita . Let's just say I have a change of heart . It was really....really good !
google avatar

Yelp
Hummus and Pita is a great little restaurant located right around the corner from the downtown OP area. I stopped by for lunch after the farmer's market, and now I'm hooked. I met a friend for a late lunch around 2pm, and despite still being busy, our food was made and brought out very quickly. I had a chicken gyro wrap, and I shared an order of Dolmas. All were absolutely delicious and full of authentic flavor! Service was also excellent and the owner was talking to customers throughout our visit and making sure everyone had a good experience. Really enjoyed this little local spot and I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
Ohhh this place is great! I walk downtown a lot and I always smell the amazing aromas coming from Hummus and Pita and it's so enticing! The restaurant itself has a modest dining area and a patio overlooking Thompson Park. We have gotten takeout here a few times and every time it's been hot, fresh, and delicious! I especially appreciate the authentic Baba Ghanoush. The fries are crispy and so good dipped in tzatziki or garlic sauce. I usually get the halloumi wrap which has pomegranate molasses on it - come on!!! It's so unique and adds a lovely sweetness to balance the fried cheese and other toppings. I'd love to try the avocado and date shakes but sadly they don't do non-dairy versions... maybe one day! Stop by and do yourself a favor and get the chicken kabob! It's juicy and tender - a perfect snack on the go!

J G.

Yelp
We've had two large family meals here now and everything has been delicious. The pita and hummus are fresh. The kebabs are tender and well flavored. The Arayes were very tasty with the pomegranate molasses adding a nice touch. The staff is friendly and helpful. We will be back.

Sarah F.

Yelp
Found this place randomly and am sure glad I did. The food was fresh, authentic, and overall fantastic. The staff was very sweet and welcome you with a hummus sample to get your palate started. The was the perfect addition to the downtown OP vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm upset I've waited this long to try Hummus and Pita! I've been trying to find a restaurant that rivals one of my favorites that closer to home and let me tell you, hummus and pita is it! I got the chicken shawarma wrap and let me just sat I love that the garlic is on the side! It's so delicious and I love that I can put as much as I want of it on each bite! I also got the fattoush salad and it was so light and refreshing! Such perfect pairing with the wrap! The gentleman at the register even gave me a side of hummus when he found out it was my first time in and he was right, it's delicious! I really appreciate him going the extra mile to offer hummus and i will for sure be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Hummus and Pita is in a great little spot adjacent to Thompson Park in Downtown Overland Park. This location used to be where Snack Shack was located and I'm glad that a great new local business is taking its place. I met an old friend here for an early lunch a few weeks ago and when I walked in (around 11am - it was early!) it was pretty empty. I was greeted by the staff, ordered a gyro sandwich, and sat down to wait for my food and my friend to arrive. By the time my friend sat down there were a few more folks, and by the time we left it was bustling! The food was fresh, warm, and delicious. I can't remember the name of the appetizer my friend ordered - some kind of rice wrapped in grape leaves?, but she used to live in Qatar and wanted to sample some of their more authentic fare. She loved it here as well and I got to try some new food that was really very tasty. Something that really impressed me was that by the time we were wrapping up our meal and the place was packed with people, the owner started walking around asking folks how their food was and making sure people were having a great time. It really gave you a sense of community and commitment to a good product. Overall I don't live too far from here and I'm sure I'll be back. If you're in the area and looking for good mediterranean food this is a great option!
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Awesome fresh pita and hummus good curry rice! Good food, random funny stuff inside? :-)

Terisa M.

Yelp
Food was amazing!!! Get the hummus!!! That stuff is beyond yummy!!! I walked in - they greeted me and asked I had been there before... I said no they gave me a sample of the hummus and walked me through the menu! Great service!!! Took like 5 mins to get food! I will be back!
google avatar

Barbara Becker M.

Yelp
I was warmly greeted and provided a sample of the hummus during my first visit. The quaint venue and outdoor atmosphere are clean and welcoming. I plan to return to try more dishes but definitely coming back for the hummus and pita bread.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
Cute spot, good food, nice people. Hard to ask for more. Have returned a couple times for the gyros, they are very tasty. This is the kind of family run spot I love seeing and supporting. Delicious, vaguely healthy (probably? I want to eat four of them at once so I'm guessing that's not ideal), and ready quickly. The interior is small, bright, clean, and modest with an open kitchen. There's some clear attention to detail and professional pride. And they have every reason to be. Looking forward to returning!
google avatar

Felicia W.

Yelp
This was our first visit and we were very pleased to find this little gem. The people are friendly and the food is delicious. It is small inside but they will be expanding in the future. There is also outside seating in the park.

Lindsey B.

Yelp
I'm not a big yelp person, but I am a big eating out person, A KC influencer posted about this place and I could not be less impressed. The chicken kabob platter had only one kebab, it was okay. the hummus is great and so is the tabouli salad, but we ordered three entrees and the portions are small. We are big fans of Jerusalem cafe so if choosing that is worth the drive, I'm sorry to say. The service for the order was kind and they cared about our food allergies. The amibance is very cool, maybe more of a lunch spot vs dinner.
google avatar

Bobbi T.

Yelp
We were craving some Mediterranean food and this place wasn't too far from where we were so we decided to give them a try. We ordered tha tapa platter and spicy gyro. I guess we didn't specify which spicy gyro we wanted so they gave us the platter by default and not the sandwich. We went with the tapa platter because I was craving hummus and baba ganoush. The spicy gyro was really good! It had a nice kick of spice and great flavor. My favorites were the pita bread, baba ganoush and spicy gyro meat. The hummus, dolmas, falafel and baklava were ok...not terrible but not too exciting either. We can't wait to go back and try the other meat options...and definitely get more baba ganoush!

Ashley F.

Yelp
Overpriced. Mediocre at best. Dolmas - bad. How? One's in a can from Trader Joe's are better. Falafel - like something you can buy frozen and bake at home Hummus very Tahini heavy. Tabbouleh - soggy So if you're into that go for it.

Thecla W.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful experience! The food was delicious! Try the Real Baba - it was one of the best things I've tasted. The atmosphere was fun and very clean. Also the staff were super friendly. Hummus & Pita is the whole package!
google avatar

Natalie S.

Yelp
Employees were friendly and they have done a nice job with the decor inside! The hanging lights are cool! My shawarma was good. It didn't blow me away but it was good. I have some favorites around the metro for similar food but everyone has different tastes and preferences. It was also just kind of small for the price but maybe that's just how things are with inflation nowadays. I will come back and try the gyro and hummus to give it more of a try. I love that it's by a nice park because my kids can run around and play. The owner was very friendly as well. I'm moving it from a 4 to 5 because I wrote the review while I was there and when I left the owner approached me asking what could be different and then offered a sample of hummus. I really do want them to be successful and the owner was just so nice.edit- the hummus omg that was so so good.
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
The BEST hummus ever! So creamy and such a delicious flavor! Always a warm welcome and it's so nice to eat places that your business is actually appreciated & expressed!!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
The gyro meat @hummus_pita is my favorite in KC!! We had it on the hummus and could have eaten a whole second order. It has a good balance of meat to fat and with the really smooth hummus and warm pita - yes please!! The falafel is good but a little dry when compared to other places and it needs hot sauce. We also got the lamb kebab. Good char flavor but get it to go because it is really hard to eat with a plastic fork and knife.
