Humus x Hortense

"Chef Nicolas Decloedt and the lady of the house and sommelière, Caroline Baerten, were championing plant-based cuisine long before it became trendy. Their sustainable ethos and creativity have been a source of inspiration for many, what’s more they publish a sustainability report that can be consulted online by all and sundry. We warrant that a meal in this stylish, street corner building adorned with frescoes of angels and gilded ceilings will be an unforgettable experience. The micro-seasons are reverently respected thanks to their close collaboration with botanist-farmer Dries Delanote and other craftsmen and women. Light years from fads and fashions, zero waste is a state of mind here, leading to a bold, new, innovative look at gastronomy. A personal retake on the Paris-Brest dessert with matured celeriac, foaming quince, punchy horseradish and a celeriac and apple juice to coax all the flavours out of the vegetables. The sommelière deploys her immense talent in creations that may feature amazake, sake, milky oolong tea and vodka, in a bid to further exalt the chef’s exuberant recipes. Each dish triggers our curiosity and awakens our appetites. Humus x Hortense is in a class of its own." - Michelin Inspector

We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was an absolutely unforgettable experience. Thank you H x H! You can really feel that the owners put their heart and soul into this restaurant. The love and passion are present in every detail. The chefs are true artists. They play with colors, shapes, unique ingredients, and creativity to turn veggie dishes into real works of art. I was kinda sad to read some other reviews that didn’t recognize how much love, effort, and care go into the food here. You just can’t compare Humus x Hortense to an ordinary vegetarian place. Waiters and staff members were sweet and friendly. I absolutely recommend this spot for anyone open to an unexpected culinary journey 💛

Google
Magnificent experience. Everything was meticulously curated. Food was surprising and always well balanced in taste and textures. Drinks pairings were original and spot on. Location is a perfect balance between cozy and elegant. A fantastic place to relax and enjoy the unexpected. Service was discrete very professional. Very recommended.

Google
What to say about this place... 5 out of 5 goes not give it justice. Simply exquisite, sumptuous and nothing I have ever tasted before. We had a special tasting menu prepared by HxH and a Spanish restaurant. All courses were absolutely exquisite and original. The service was flawless, informative, attentive. The drink pairings were amazing and delicious. The whole dinner was actually quite filling. Definitely coming back and can highly recommend this.

Google
All the dishes had different level of acidity, it dulled the palette as there was little variation in the taste profile. The waiters kept spilling fluids here and there. We asked for still water and they kept giving us sparkling. Not a Michelin star level restraint. At 250 euros, not worth our time and money.

Google
I would really like to give it a higher score, however it doesn’t quite live up to the hype, the expectation and most importantly the cost. On a Friday night, we went for an extensive tasting menu. There were more plates than I could count. Some dishes were flavorful delights and some left me underwhelmed. I definitely give a high score for creativity and brining vegan dishes to masterful dining experience, but the overall experience left me wishing for more. With the tasting menu also came drinks pairing (available in non-alcoholic options too) which was an interesting journey through all types of different alcohols. With such small pours I was left without a drink throughout the dinner quite a few times which reduced the overall experience. Service overall was lovely, overly attentive at times but decreased in quality as the night progressed. It was also rather hot in the restaurant as the night went on without air conditioning and an open kitchen, so I would avoid in warmer months. For €215 per person, I left feeling full but disappointed. If you’re vegan, it’s a worthy fine dining experience I suppose - but if you’re curious, better stay clear and find better value and better tasting experience elsewhere.

Google
I really wanted to give them five stars, but unfortunately, the service didn’t meet my expectations. The food, however, was absolutely outstanding , easily one of the best vegan fine dining experiences I’ve ever had. Every dish was meticulously crafted and thoughtfully presented. It’s definitely a must-try. It’s true the drinks were quite small, but considering the price of the tasting menu, that felt acceptable. What let the experience down was the service — for several reasons. When I arrived, I was asked to wait at the bar for snacks while everyone else was already seated at tables. I assume my table wasn’t ready. Personally, I would have preferred to wait outside, but I agreed and sat at the bar. Someone from the kitchen came over and kindly offered me a drink. I said yes and received a well-made mezcal cocktail. Given the circumstances , not being seated at a table despite having a reservation and the extremely small pour (about 3cl with ice). I assumed it was complimentary. To my surprise, it appeared on the final bill. It could have been nice to have the gesture of not charging that drink. When I was finally moved to my table, the server simply stated the names of each dish with no further explanation, while I could hear other tables receiving detailed descriptions and a more engaging service overall. That said, the quality of the food far outweighed the shortcomings in service. I truly hope to return and see that the hospitality has improved, because the cuisine deserves it.

Google
We absolutely love this restaurant, we try to visit every year, this was the fifth time, and they never disappoint. From the welcoming and knowledgeable staff to the attention to detail, from the amazing drinks to the mind-blowing food, we feel very privileged to taste the wonderful creations of the chef and his team. We´ll be back, this is definitely a yearly tradition we cherish.

Google
Booked quite spontaneously on Saturday, table for 2, birthday surprise and I'm very happy I did: Very interesting and progressive concept, in that matter amazing food. Very nice people and a relaxed, unique location. The price for the full wilderness weekend experience is quite high, but I recommend it for a unique experience in taste. Plant based Umami!

Yelp
Really exquisite 7 course dinner. From the very first amuse bouche down to the final drop of wine, this unique experience made my first days at Brussels truly memorable. What I particularly appreciated was the high quality gluten free alternatives that Humus x Hortense had to offer. Highly recommended dinner / experience !

Yelp
Last time we walked in ... it was full ... they told us to Book in advance ... so far so good The other day ... I tried to Book ... 5 times ... nobody ever picked up the phone ... left a message ... never got an answer ... Very very frustrating. How long do you think you can you get away with such a poor customer experience ? As long as your fancy cocktail star makes the buzz ... after I am not very hopeful for your business ...

Yelp
it was a Great cocktail bar with excellent service...when it was on place du grand sablon. now the restaurant looks like an afternoon tea boudoir, and the cocktails are depressingly small and tasteless...what happened to Hortense and its amazing underground trendy and unpretentious vibe?

Yelp
Had a mixed experience in this bar. The place when you step down into it is beautifully lit, sumptuous and cosy. It's down in a basement with exposed bricks, candlelight and lots of little nooks and crannies for you to hide from the world and get stuck into a lovingly crafted cocktail. Now. Here's where we get in a spot of bother. The cocktails. So, first of all we asked the waitress what whiskey she had and she listed off some bourbons. Not a great start. The cocktails we got then really weren't great. The whiskey was an odd choice and didn't go well with the flavours. The barman was lovely and everything seemed like it was going to be spot on here but honestly the mixing wasn't great and alarm bells did ring a bit when the waitress' knowledge seemed to be lacking somewhat.

Yelp
Cocktail specialist Hortense has partnered up with the lovely folks at Humus Botanical Gastronomy to offer an interesting new mix of food and cocktails (with or without alcohol if you're not into getting smashed at lunch/brunch time). The brunch formula on both Saturdays (Yes!) and Sundays is served in the form of a prix-fixe menu which will set you back 25€. Sounds a bit steep but it's more than justified. We got 5 servings of amazingly presented vegetarian dishes that all tasted heavenly. Everything was refined and surprising, and made use of local and seasonal products of high quality. Add in a great decor (ex-"La Mercerie") and very friendly staff, and you end up with one of the tastiest and healthiest brunches in the capital. PS. We haven't had the chance to try the cocktails just yet, but we will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is such a lovely little spot. As many others have said, getting a decent cocktail in this city can be difficult. Hortense rises to the challenge, delivering handcrafted high-quality cocktails in a gorgeous setting. We enjoyed a variety of drinks, all of which were well-made. I particularly enjoyed the Corpse Reviver 47, as well as the off-menu "dirtying" of my gin martini. The bartender had about a dozen people to serve, yet remained exceptionally polite and professional, not to mention making outstanding little drinks quickly. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I love the speakeasy feel to this bar. Both the setting and the atmosphere are amazing. The cocktail menu is short, but appealing and creative. Hortense serves unique combinations of very high quality. It is needless to say that the prices are set accordingly. I had the "London is Calling", which was absolutely delicious. Definitely a unique spot in Brussels!

Yelp
A little hidden Brussels gem! I was trawling Yelp in search of a romantic spot for a date with a girl I met, and stumbled upon this place. It was the perfect choice: elegant decor, low lighting and music, great bespoke cocktails. Three important things to know: 1) It's expensive: 4 cocktails cost €66 2) The menu is tiny - go off menu and ask the barmaid to make you something special 3) The bar is not well known and the entrance is hidden, so google map it before leaving: even cab drivers right outside the entrance couldn't direct me. All in all, a great choice and evening. (Despite being 30min late, I got the all-important kiss and a second date ;)

Yelp
Loved it here! Another reviewer that it had a "speakeasy" vibe, and I would agree (obviously without the prohibition-era feel that many of the ones I've been to back in the States have). It dark, sexy, and the cocktails are damn good. There are probably only 15-20 seats in the whole place and they serve you water and popcorn with your cocktail. The waitress was fine, but the bartender was great--you could tell he really cared about what he was doing. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area

Yelp
Enjoyed a good anniversary meal here with my wife. The food is excellent and creative. The cocktails are good if a little limited in choice. The atmosphere is relaxed and the decor is creative. Service was friendly and engaging despite a full service. The price was in the upper half for Brussels but fair given the innovative approach. I'd recommend this place no hesitation and would go again.

Yelp
Hortense is now rue de Vergnies, near Flagey. Still lovely cocktails. The FB service is no good though (apparently it's a PR guy who replies to you). We were promised trial food from Humus pre-the definitive list. There was nothing so we had one drink and had to rush to find a restaurant that still served food :/

Yelp
They've just moved to the same location as LA MERCERIE (tea-room), so you have a levely interior but with a different mood and amazing drinks. Although a bit pricey, they are very original and are worth a sip ! They have more classic cocktails too.

Yelp
Perfect brunch menu. Really loved the presentation, lightness, and completeness of the menu. A slow poached egg with leeks was my favorite. Highly recommend, great value for money. What was 25 euro could easily be worth 70 - 80 euro in other metropolitan areas.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! It's really nice for a girls' night but equally cozy and intimate for that special date. The ambience is amazing, the set-up is lovely and if you get there early enough, you'll be lucky to grab one of the seating areas in the corner. The cocktails are a bit on the expensive side but oh so worth it! Interesting and unique combinations that you won't find anywhere else. This gem is hidden on the Sablon but once you discover it, you'll want to go back for more. Two downsides - the close early and seating is limited. Regardless, I highly recommend!

Yelp
Quite nice and meant to be authentic place. If you've ever been to real speakeasies in NYC, this is how it'd look like. Waiters would be able to recommend you cocktails the same way. A good point is that you can mix up ingredients to do your own cocktails. A bad point is that if you're lazy the way I am, and that you get only inspiration in front of a menu (and maybe because it's their work), you will be easily bored by theirs. I would suggest to double or even triple the cocktail suggestions, only 2 or 3 looked good to me and it's not enough for a speakeasy. Otherwise great idea, great district, do not hesitate to pass by

Rozan J.

Yelp
Had a quick drink before going to dinner elsewhere. Friendly staff who accommodated us despite being fully booked, tailored the cocktails to our taste. Curious to try their food next time!

James F.

Yelp
Refused service because the bar was "too full" - there were about 15 people inside. Nice location, but a frankly bizarre policy. Won't be rushing back.
