The Best San Diego-Area Wineries to Visit | Eater San Diego

"Hungry Hawk first opened in 2008 with a vineyard block of Bordeaux varietals, but 15 different grapes are now grown on the property, located just four miles from downtown Escondido. Open from noon to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday tastings range from $15 for a standard tasting to $35 for a vineyard tour and tasting combo." - darlene-horn

I was disappointed with the service I received when it came to wine selection. The staff members responsible for serving the wine seemed unfamiliar with the proper protocols and etiquette associated with wine service. As a result, I felt undervalued as a customer, despite the high prices comparable to what one would expect from a sommelier. I believe improvements in staff training could enhance the overall experience significantly. The music was amazing! I love the gild and the piano. She is so talented!! Thank you.

Google
Nice atmosphere but the view is kind of blocked from the patio. The tasting room feels a bit cold as well.

Gary Falk

Google
The best winery in Escondido! Sit on the patio, sip wine and enjoy the sun and songs.

We had no reservations and were seated right away under a nice gazebo for our party of 6. We had a great view of the beautiful winery and vista. The waitress came over and took our orders for our tastings so that was nice that everything was table service. She checked in on us often too. We did the reserved red tastings and all the wines were delicious! We tried their port and went home with two bottles of that as well.

Google
Good wine selection and very tasty. They charge for tastings and don't give a break if you buy wine. Hard to feel good about that. If a winery wants you to come back and spend money, they should make you feel appreciated. Still a nice place, just mixed feelings.

Google
It's always wonderful to find somewhere new that's close to home and also great to visit. I always think that a limited number of wines, carefully made, with passion, is preferable to a long slate of wines, however varied they are. The team at Hungry Hawk were friendly, knowledgeable and passionate to share. We enjoyed a tasting plus a long picnic lunch (we brought ours from Brothers' Provision in RB) on the terrace, overlooking the valley below. Highly recommended.

Google
My son and I totally enjoyed the tour and tasting. Ed is very knowledgeable, and we learned all about cultivating and wine making. Very pleasant and scenic family run vineyard.

Google
We very much enjoyed our wine tasting today and it was a great first visit for my friends. However, we were "less than enchanted" by the entertainment today. We felt the karaoke style television theme contest was beneath the class of Hungry Hawk. I have been twice before and the music was talented and pleasant. We came to enjoy the wine and atmosphere, not answer 20 questions! I will be back, but will make sure of the planned music in advance!

Yelp
Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Driving from San Diego half the fun of visiting wineries in Escondido/Ramona is the drive! Hungry Hawk Winery has beautiful views and a lovely flora in and around the winery. The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions. Unfortunately, their wines were not as great as I'd hoped. The taste was simply not there. I did their Reserve Tasting Flight which comes with the: 2022 Estate Grenache - very very light wine with no hint of sweetness. 2021 Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - on the lighter side for a cab 2020 Lonesome Oak Carmenere - simply didn't like 2021 Estate Syrah Noir- had slightly better notes than their carmenere but nothing special. Overall disappointed with their wine selections. I did a wine tasting from their reserve wines and they weren't exciting. Unfortunately wouldn't be back. Great views. Not so great wine.

Yelp
It was a bit on the early side when we got to this vineyard... Beautiful outdoor space . The person that greeted us at the door and also delivered our flight to our table was so sweet. We did not order food however they do have food. It's a very dog friendly space. We really enjoyed our time.

Yelp
This turned out to be a wonderful surprise! We weren't planning to visit a winery but we happened to be in the area and decided to to check one out. They offer 4 different sets of flights (mixed, red, reserve -- which a heavier red and dessert). I really enjoyed the reserve and dessert flights, especially their Lucas Aurelius Port wine. It's sweet and complex and according to our server, it goes perfectly on top of vanilla ice cream! We liked it so much we bought a couple of bottles to bring home. Food: Although they do have some snacks for sale, they also allow you to bring your own food!

Yelp
I live very close to this lovely place and finally got over to visit. They had live music the day we were there and it was a little chilly (for California, of course, always need to qualify that!). The view is gorgeous, the tables and seating are very comfy, and the hosts are super nice. Now here's the best part, they have blankets in a basket on a table that you can grab and use outside to be comfy and warm while you're sipping your wine. How cool is that?!?! Plus they have free bottled water in a basket, such a nice touch. We had a white and a red and both had full, pleasant flavors. The white was my favorite, very refreshing and light, but the red was also very good. I decided to become a member and now I can go whenever I want and get a free flight each time! The flight is so pretty with a wine glass tucked into a wooden board and 4 different tastings. The second time we were there, they also had live music, which was great both times. I will say the food offerings are limited. We didn't order food the second time but the first they were out of the charcuterie and only had crackers and a soft cheese. Not bad, but we were looking for a little more. They said they sometimes have food trucks, which will be a nice option. You can also bring your own food, which for me is a great option! I'll take better pictures next time, but posted a video of the performer the first time we were there who was very good! All and all, this is a great little place that's friendly with beautiful views, good wine, nice entertainment, and extra comforts that make you feel right at home!

Yelp
I had the opportunity to visit and taste some outstanding wines and enjoy the gorgeous views of Hungry Hawk Vineyards. I have had them on my list to visit and I was very Impressed with the wines. I chose the reserve tasting flight. The red wines I tasted were Cabernet Franc, Estate Block, Carmenere and estate Syrah Noir. I had an opportunity to chat with the owners Ed and Jeannine Embly who were very proud of their years of hard work to establish a world class winery! The service they provide and the outstanding staff make this visit memorable. San Diego County has a remarkable number of small boutique wineries and Hungry Hawk is one of the best! I purchased the 2020 Estate Syarh Noir and it paired well with the short ribs we enjoyed at the evening dinner at home

Yelp
Escondido wine tasting can be a little hit or miss but Hungry Hawk is a hit! Located just 6 mins from the Safari Park, this place is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a relaxing glass or tasting. Since it was our first time, my husband and I opted to get both red options: standard and reserve. We enjoyed the majority of what we tasted. We would've loved to learn a little more about what we were tasting but it seems they have many estate wines which we could likely see growing right in front of us. Service was great in accommodating us early and with a friendly smile! The view was terrific and we loved facing the vines. There was live music happening on the patio that was also quite enjoyable. While they have a limited amount of small bites of cheese and crackers and such, you can also BYOF.

Yelp
They're still amazing. The hubby and I haven't been to Hungry Hawk since pre-Covid. Yesterday was our first trip back to enjoy their superb deck, gorgeous views of the valley, and amazing wines (or course). We decided to go with a "red tasting" and a "reserve tasting", and share them. All 8 wines were stellar! Our server was so friendly and knowledgeable too. So extra points for that! I'd forgotten how much I enjoy HH. They really do produce world-class wines, with world-class service.

Yelp
What a lovely spot! We enjoyed the outdoor seating, indoor decor, live music, relaxed atmosphere, and views. It felt like hanging out at a friend's backyard. We definitely look forward to coming back out for a day trip. It's far enough away that you feel like it's a short get away, without leaving San Diego county.

Yelp
What a beautiful asset in Escondido. The wine is amazing, the views are out of this world, and I've never met such a knowledgeable, friendly staff. Although my husband and I are not huge wine connoisseurs, we joined the wine club here as the staff began to feel like friends. We're dog lovers, but we appreciate their no pets policy as unfortunately, many pet owners do not control their animals. Do yourself a favor and stop by Hungry Hawk when you're in the area. There is music on the weekends which makes it a perfect afternoon getaway.

Yelp
Best wine in Escondido, gorgeous spot and lovely staff here!! Just became a member after having their flight of reds since it was so diverse and phenomenal! Live music as well (major bonus)
google avatar

Hannah N.

Yelp
The perfect sunny summer Sunday at a great local winery! I had never been here but my boyfriend had recommended it for a fun date day and I am so glad we came!! We tried the mixed flight to get a taste of their reds and white wines on the patio. We had a beautiful view of the winery and they are also growing corn right now. There was also live music and lots of people were there to enjoy the day. They do have a couple different charcuterie options to snack on or you are welcome to bring your own which is what we did. Everyone who worked there was so kind and the wine really was the perfect taste for a hot Escondido day we even took a bottle home. Definitely have to bring my family back here soon'

Yelp
So this review is not based on their wine but the service provided. The initial invite was very nice and I don't post this a reflection of the employees. But of all the wineries we have been to in San Diego, this is the first that was not dog friendly and also not child friendly. Our friends had a toddler that was still in a stroller. Because of their little one, we were not welcome. I get the fact of little kids can ruin the atmosphere for some people. But even as a non-child household, this is the least of my worries when I go to a winery. We do have a well behaved dog that we bring to wineries but not allowed here. But this being said, this is their choice and some people probably like it but we won't be coming back.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our visit here a couple of weeks ago. It was a quiet day, on the precipice of the novel coronavirus issues yet to come. The weather was warm and partly sunny, and the bartender friendly and accommodating. Our party of two each tried a flight of reds with their classic tasting. According to their website, the "classic tastings are a customizable experience that include a taste of 5 wines of your choice from our list of current releases. $15 per flight. Many wines are available for the tastings, though some of the premium wines are not, as I found the 2017 Super Tuscan (51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Sangiovese, 11% Syrah Noir, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Sirah) and the 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon very much to my liking. The views of the vineyard were very pleasant. They also offer tours, a wine club, online store, etc. When allowed, we'd be happy to return here!

Yelp
Hungry Hawk has some great wines and a patio overlooking a wonderful view of some vines and a beautiful green valley. My friend and I typically enjoy winery hopping in Temecula for a nice girls day. We decided to venture a bit closer to the wineries in Escondido. This was our first stop and made a great impression on us. Service was wonderful. There were three different flights available: white, red, and reserve. They also had a menu of wines to drink by glass or bottle. I was impressed by the amount of estate wines available. Another bonus was it was only about a 5 minute drive from the freeway, although you wouldn't know it once you are there.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. I had my birthday the other day and contacted hungry hawk to let them know I would be having a party bus of 17 people coming in. They were very accommodating and had several tables reserved for my party when we got there. The staff was very nice and I was given a free wine glass to take home. One issue I had though was when I spoke to an employee on the phone I don't know if it was an owner or manager. They asked if I would be able to put all of the party on one tab and I said that would won't be possible as with 17 people ordering all different things would be too hard to figure out and we can all order separately she said yes on the phone it was totally fine. Yet when I got to the winery they made us order at our tables outside and put everything on 1 tab and that was such a headache trying to figure it out. I wish they would've just let us walk up and order what we wanted 1 at a time like we did at the other places. Parking was easy for the party bus i had and the view from the tables was nice.

Yelp
I'm a member at Hungry Hawk. It's a hidden gem, family owned (all the staff memorize customers names), great service, great live music, great views.... And of course, great wine! You can bring your own food. Can't say enough great things about Hungry Hawk Winery.

Yelp
Service is top Notch. Wine is good. Ambience an atmosphere is beautiful with some live music. Bring your know snacks and hang out for a couple hours. Will be back. Thanks to the HHV crew.

Yelp
One of the best wineries I've been to! Cozy little mom & pop winery. We tried a bottle of their signature white wine (Albarino) & went on a quiet, sunny Saturday afternoon. Outside food is permitted, so we paired tacos from the nearby TJ's with our vino - classy, I know. :) Relaxed in the beautiful outdoor patio with the most gorgeous view of the grapevines & barely a soul in sight. Wonderful customer service! Easy small parking lot. Clean & sweet spot outdoors to sip wine. They have snacks but we brought our own food. Highly, highlyyyy recommend! :) Can't wait to come back. Thanks for a great, first, spontaneous visit! Loved it.

Yelp
Members for 7 years. Had no issues with children the entire time we've been members. All of the sudden they decided to ban children. We have a newborn and very well behaved two (almost three) year old. Too bad they are so close to the safari park and vacation city to not be family friendly sucks. We canceled our wine membership after how we were treated, we are no longer welcome and can't enjoy it. They must be shooting for a more commercialized enterprise and less of the local family winery vibe. Shame because we loved them and took every visitor we had there for a good experience.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
We've been members of Hungry Hawk for about two years now. We specifically joined their wine club because we really enjoy their white wines, which is their specialty and something we don't usually drink. Of course, they have red wines as well. This past weekend, we stopped-in to pick-up our wine club shipment and found the tasting patio open. Unfortunately, we hadn't made reservations (Covid-19 policy), but the owner, Ed, and his staff were kind enough to find us a table (in the shade and socially spaced out from the others), so we got to enjoy a cool glass of their two Albarino selections. NOTE: During this time, they're not offering tastings, but you can enjoy a glass or share a bottle at your patio table. I recommend you give them a try, but please don't forget to make a reservation. The patio ambiance and views are wonderful and I'm sure you'll find one (or several) of their wines that you'll like.

Yelp
Their flights are very good. I would recommend 2018 estate recon RED--it is big aromas of fresh STRaWberries, subtle notes of green herbs. Dry, medium bodied on the palate with res fruits and savory umami. Lingering red fruits and firm tannins on the finish.
google avatar

Denise L.

Yelp
Loved the vibe. Very mellow and beautiful views. We brought our own sandwiches from Major Market in Escondido. We loved the wine!!!We had a nice white wine that was so delicious. Sorry can't remember the name. But go and fun and make a reservation before you go
google avatar

Layla L.

Yelp
Came on a rainy day but it's still beautiful. Very friendly staff and the wine is delicious- I'd say more so the white than the red (lighter reds) but try both! The petite Syrah and Albariño were my favorites. No food Great outdoor area. Small indoor area

Yelp
Covid pick up hours Fri - Sun 12-5p This is one of the best wineries in San Diego. I bought the Dry Rose, Estate Melange Blanc (a wonderful vionier pinot gris), Elliot Ranch Albarino (aged 2 months in french oak) and Estate Block 1 which I haven't tried.
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
This was a very cute winery! I came here for my friend's birthday and had no idea that this winery was located where it is. They have a great view too! There isn't a lot of seating inside but more room outside. Their wine was good! I was a fan of their sparkling wine (The Bubbly Bluebird). If you get their tastings they aren't as generous so I recommend getting a tasting and after buying a glass or bottle to share of your favorite. Its a great place to have wine and enjoy it with friends and/or family!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
I love this winery!!! There are so many beautiful wineries in the area, but this view is genuinely breathtaking. It overlooked the mountains along with their vines and they arranged their tables so everyone had access to the gorgeous views. You do have to make a reservation online, but they do a really good job of being cautious about covid. The tables are all very spread out and the employees are all wearing masks and seem to take it seriously. If you stop by, make sure that you get some rose. It was one of my favorite wines of all time, not too sweet but not too dry either. I honestly should've brought a couple bottles home, but that's just another excuse for me to go back!

Yelp
We found out about Hungry Hawk when friends of ours from LA raved about their Chardonnay. We made reservations for a wine tasting and a tour of the winery on a Saturday. The place is a gem with a beautiful view. The owner gave the tour himself. What a pleasant man. He works the vineyard and winery with his wife, their son and their daughter. The wine was outstanding. We brought our own picnic foods and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and listened to the live music. We actually ended up joining their wine club - which is really a great deal. I highly recommend visiting the place. It's worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Great wines, beautiful estate vineyard and fun tasting room with a large patio that's a perfect spot for a picnic. My favorite is their Cabernet Franc! Check out my full review at frequentflighters.com

Yelp
Make a reservation online! We found out about this winery from a brochure. Beautiful winery in Escondido. Friendly owners! & lovely wine. We each got a glass of their white wine & both were tasty & refreshing!
google avatar

Yelp
A little gem in the San Pasqual Valley overlooking the wild animal park. Good wine, a few snacks, good entertainment sitting out on a fabulous patio with great views over the winery and the San Pasqual Valley. We liked it so much we became the wine club members, and go there frequently. We usually buy extra bottles along with our regular wine club pick up. We especially like their Viognier and Recon Red. we try to make it there any time that "Father and Son" or "Father and Daughter" play, usually on Sunday.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place! I had family in town and we decided to go to the Safari Park Zoo in Escondido (right down the street). I found Hungry Hawk online, and the photos looked nice so I figured it would be a good filler activity between the zoo and dinner, so coordinated a tour of the winery. I didn't expect to love it anywhere near as much as we did. The tours are private and are led by either the winemaker or the owner. It was about an hour and included 5 wine samples (and I believe was only $35 a person). Our tour was led by the owner, Ed, who could not have been nicer. He and his wife started making wine just for fun years ago and have turned it into a family business. Ed was a great guide: very knowledgeable, but never boring (as I've found on some other winery tours!) He kept the tour interesting and interactive, answering all of our many questions. His family's pride in and passion for Hungry Hawk shines through in every aspect of their business. The wine was fantastic, the property was pristine, employees were great, and the view was absolutely gorgeous as well. I am local to San Diego and will be adding Hungry Hawk into my activity rotation for visitors. I saw some people take picnic lunches out to the patio and enjoyed lunch with some wine while overlooking the valley. What a great idea! We so enjoyed our time there and will absolutely be back!

Yelp
Small and quaint little vineyard in the hills of Escondido. Not too far of a drive once you exit I-15. Price - $12 for 5 tastings. Tasting are pretty small (not as generous as the other wineries around) Individual prices for glass are average but for bottles i thought were pretty high, $28 and up. We came on the Saturday afternoon and sat on the patio that overlooks the grapevine fields of property. Live music was a nice touch and added to an overall pleasant ambiance. They don't sell any wine snacks (like bread, cheese and ect...) but i'm pretty sure you can bring your own.

Jana C.

Yelp
The wines are fantastic and the service is even better. Hands down my absolute favorite winery to go to in Escondido.
google avatar

Epi I.

Yelp
Lovely winery grouds. Arrived and there's a sign to wait to be seated outdoors. Not busy at all. Server asked immediately if I had a reservation. I always thought asking wasn't too welcoming unless place was full. There was live entertainment. 2 guys singing with a guitar. They were really good. As for wines, we did their wine tasting which was pricey for serving in a flight. No wine stood out. Not too much important information about the wines provided. We saw great views from winery. Not a memomorable wine experience.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
No dogs allowed or crying children. I could give them a million stars on that alone! The Super Tuscan Red is super smooth and the Rose is very refreshing on a hot summer day!

Brandi P.

Yelp
Extremely rude and not dog friendly AT ALL -- if you're an animal lover, go elsewhere! They won't even let dogs on the premises/outside. Yikes!
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
This is definitely a hidden gem in Escondido. My sister and I like to try wineries and we saw a sign for a winery on the way back from Ramona, so we figured why not try it. Wow! We were served by the winemaker and his mother which was great. They were both very friendly and knowledgeable. Wine tastings run $15 for 5 tastes or $18 if you want the logo glass. I have to say, it was a very great experience. The winery is small, but very classy. There is a good amount of seating outside and inside which is nice. The view is amazing and the decor is great. The wines were great, and I especially liked the Super Tuscan (the Barbera and Tempranillo were also good). I couldn't get over how this place ran like it was open for a very long time as it ran so smoothly, but we were told it hasn't been open very long at all. Wow! For wine with a view and service, definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

Catherine G.

Yelp
This family owned and operated vineyard makes delicious wines and their tasting room and outdoor patio are gorgeous. Mike, Jeanine, and Ed are delightful and so helpful. Try the Viognier and the Super Tuscan- two of my very favorites!
google avatar

Tarah F.

Yelp
Love this spot ! Views and wines are spectacular. Definitely bring some crackers, cheese, fruit with you to sit out on the patio and enjoy the wines and views. A must see !
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Stopped in to try some wines on a sunny afternoon. I'm more of a white person, but do like the occasional red. They have several wines of each type on their menu to choose from. I really like the Albarino choices, each had its own distinctive taste. The Super Tuscan (red) was probably my favorite red. I really appreciate that they don't allow kids or pets, it's an adult establishment not a playground so it keeps it enjoyable. They have live music on some weekends. Due to covid the inside isn't open for tastings, but the lovely patio is open for seating, probably best to make a reservation on Saturday or Sunday as they seem to get busy.
google avatar

Penny H.

Yelp
This place is great. Fantastic wine and pretty views! Nice covered patio. Laid back vibe with staff that really know their wine!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Loved this winery and tasting! Service - excellent and very attentive. I felt like family! Thank you Pedro! Wine - so good! I especially loved their very unique blueberry wine. Prices - I think it may have been $2 a pour but cannot remember. Bottle prices were great. Definitely take one home! Ambiance - go to the patio and take in the breathtaking view of the vineyard. I loved sitting out there and enjoying my wine! Overall, an excellent winery that I highly recommend.

Yelp
On a recent late afternoon we happened to be nearby and decided to check out this local San Diego county winery. The tasting room is rather new. The indoor section has lots of comforting dark wood. The outdoor patio is stone paved and has metal furniture. While the indoor space is nice, the expansive and lovely views from the outdoor patio make it the easily superior choice for sipping on any of their tasty wines. The views extend from the vineyard that starts right at the edge of the patio all the way out to the zoo safari's balloon and beyond. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the safari's giraffes or hippos, but did not see any (their enclosures may well be hidden by the many hills in the area and not visible). The outdoor patio has a portable fire pit that, when lit, makes for a festive addition to the ambiance. We didn't see the hungry hawk, but did hear the howling of a neighborhood hound. The staff is friendly. The prices are average for San Diego area wineries (e.g. $15 for a flight of five small tastings).

Brittany O.

Yelp
Not a family friendly winery! The first I came here during the pandemic with my baby, husband and parents. We had a pleasant afternoon. There was no mention of the winery entirely being 21+. I came back with a group of friends with my son and was told I was not allowed to be on the patio or tasting room. I had to wait in the hot parking lot while the group picked up some wine. If you want to enjoy an afternoon with family and friends, beware that even babies aren't allowed on the property. Jeannine was extremely cold and unwelcoming. I was planning on joining another wine club in the area as we are members at domaine artifact. Take your business there! Their property is beautiful, the staff is friendly and kids are welcome.

Michelle K.

Yelp
Wonderful space. Great views. Brought in our own food for a graduation party of 10. Was perfect. The staff was wonderful helping us set up. The super Tuscan is amazing!!! Their other wines are super good too. You should definitely visit.

Kerstin S.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our first visit to Hungry Hawk and will be back! The service was great, the views were amazing and the wine was wonderful. During our visit we learned you can bring your own snacks. We will be coming back very soon during one of the live music days to order a few bottles and enjoy the views. Thank you!

Yelp
This is a fairly new winery (c. 2014) with very small batches. One of the employees said they sell out of everything they make. Even so, they make interesting wines and have an award winning rosé (97 points). It was delicious, with an intense strawberry nose. They have a selection of blueberry wines in addition to their other options. The blueberry sparkling wine was nice- crisp and dry, almost like a cider. I was disappointed at the tasting amount- $15 for 5 pours, which were about 1-1.5 ounces each. Kinda skimpy, but they were good wines. Get a glass or buy a bottle if you really want to try them. The location is pretty, with lots of umbrella'd patio furniture outside. I would probably go back for a glass of their rosé or even the Chardonnay, which doesn't have the buttery flavor that many do.
google avatar

Margie M.

Yelp
If you are looking for incredible wine without the busyness of a big winery, look no further. Every wine I have had from this vineyard has been excellent. Not good - excellent. They recently created a sparkling wine that is absolutely delicious. The venue is beautiful and just the right size. Even when busy, it still has a cozy atmosphere. You are still able to talk to the wine maker and owners, and the rest of the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Before Covid, they sometimes have live music and food trucks. Can't wait to partake in that once everything reopens! This hidden gem truly stands up to the best in Temecula. It will be one of the main reasons Escondido becomes THE wine destination in Southern California.

Yelp
Super cool find! Look out for the sign as it could be easy to miss...We saw a sign for wine tasting while driving to the Wild Animal Park and decided to check it out on our way home. I'm so glad we did as the wines were really good and the staff was super friendly. I am still a wine novice and they were informative and made me feel like a pro. We enjoyed their whole selection of wine and even took a bottle to go for a reasonable price. They have a few places to sit inside in the air conditioning and a small bar to sample at, as well as a cute little patio that overlooks the vineyard and is a nice view. Looking forward to returning there soon!
