Detroit’s Best Burgers | Eater Detroit

"Nestled up against Woodward Avenue and surrounded by relatively new construction, Hunter House Hamburgers’ bright-white hamburger stand is a holdout from a different era. This blue-collar spot specializes in small, greasy-griddled sliders served on steamed buns with pickles and caramelized onions starting at $2.80. Dine inside, sit on the patio, or grab a sack full to go. While the burgers may be old-school, online ordering is straight out of the 21st century. Best for: Ideal for an affordable late-night fourth meal; a quick, no-frills meal for the family." - Danny Palumbo

Google
This little diner packs a big punch. They call them sliders but they are sliders meets smash burgers with onions flat top seared to caramelized perfection. Plus the onion rings are standing alone too tier too! This is a must try

Google
Very good smash burger style burgers.. Grilled onions on a toasty bun. They are small so I'd recommend 2 or 3 of them, but also they are priced very well at under $3 ea !! Onion rings were not greasy, nice and crisp. Great view of Woodward ave to watch cars go cruising .Definitely going back.

Classic, comfortable, and affordable Driving up to Hunter House, you get the feel of nostalgia. Quaint parking lot, all white building, and billowing smoke mixed with that unmistakable aroma of burgers on the grill. The inside looks almost unchanged from the '50s with the stainless steel lunch counter-tops, spinning stools, and open concept so you could see the magic happen. The staff had great comradery and chatter behind the counter making it a jovial and lively feel. Meanwhile, a constant stream of patrons, young and old, came by both the walk-up to-go window and dine-in options to feast. The burgers themselves: Excellent. Great cheese melt. The buns are not too cakey and absorb the grease without becoming the central part of the eating. And the burger was steeped in the grease of the hundred or so patties that came before it- all of this culminating in a scrumptious and pleasant experience.

Google
Get the triple! The singles are cute - but truly are a thin patty. Delicious but much better with a good stack. Photos here are the triple vs the singles. I got it with extra cheese. Great service. Lovely staff and amazing burger. Perfect local place for a late lunch.

Never again! I loved this spot, and I mean that. Been coming here for so many years, even suggested them to others but they’ve went downhill and I’m over it. The service been downgraded but I continued to visit. After this weekend I’m good. Called for take out. I was told 30-35 min wait and I said I was ok with that. I waited a while to head there, even waited in parking lot a little longer. Go in , food isn’t ready. Guy looks at me and does not greet me, goes back to cooking. Lady asked was I placing or picking up. Gave her my name etc, then I was prompted to pay. After paying I had to wait another 15mins on top of about 45 min waiting I already did. After getting my food I was waiting for my drink and it took a while for anybody to look over , she asks “you need something” , um yes my drink. Given my drink. No napkins etc, I get in car to see my fries are very dark but said I’ll just go on. As I’m driving , I bite into my fries and barely can. Very hard and not tasty at all. I waited all that time for some bar a** fries that I can’t eat? Not cool. I would’ve turned around to ask for fresh and better fries but was tired. Not cool. Bad enough the parking is very horrible. Having good food always made me over look that but now the food is basically trash. And as others mentioned, yes barely any meat anymore, more bun than burger wth. Food went from 5 star to a 1-2 star shame. Brayz, comet burger and many other places have better burgers and better service!!

My happiness place the delicious sliders one of the best you ever have in the city

Google
I know Hunter House is a well-known name for sliders in Metro Detroit. It’s been around forever, and I understand it holds a lot of history and nostalgia for people. But I stopped in tonight just looking for a good old-fashioned slider, and honestly, I was shocked. This was, without question, the dirtiest restaurant I’ve ever been in. I have no idea how the city or the health department hasn’t stepped in and shut this place down. It was beyond filthy—like nothing had been wiped, cleaned, or updated in decades. Totally gross. We actually thought about walking out as soon as we walked in, but stayed because it was a long drive. And the burgers? Barely any meat. It was honestly embarrassing. I understand the legacy, but that’s no excuse for this level of neglect.

Google
This place is the best. Staff is always smiling and kind even as busy as they get. As a small business owner in the area for many years. I pick up lunch for my crew quite a bit here. My employees are happy on Hunter House hanburger days. Best sliders on this side of the Mississippi. Thank you, staff, for all your hard work and doing it with a smile and a joke here and there.

Yelp
Was waiting for the wife to get a procedure done so I went exploring the hood and see this place saying servicing since 1952 so I had to try it if they been going strong that long!! It's definitely a play off white castles but they are smashed burgers instead of patties . Same concept with pickles and grilled onions. They are also sliders as well. We got the double cheeseburgers and also the fizzy fries It came with bacon, ranch, cheese on them . I have to say pretty good they didn't chince on the items. We also got a vanilla malt to wash it all down. I like the way it looked inside old school diner vibes. They even served the burgers on a real plate. Little pricey but again I guess it's the experience to try something new when you don't live in the area . But they were busy !! If in the area give it a try sorry forgot to take pics but there are pic on their posts .

Yelp
8-5-2024 Take out Patty melts, double cheeseburgers, fries and onion rings. They are so greasy and delicious. Everyone was satisfied. Will be back and back and back....

Yelp
Was in the area and figured stop in and get a couple sliders, chili fries and a strawberry shake. The sliders were good as usual nicely grilled onions and crisp pickles on the side. The chili fries were fantastic, fries were not soggy and the chili was not spicy at all but very good. The shake was good nice creamy. Friendly hard working staff. Was very busy and they were on top of everything. The place was clean for how busy they were.

Yelp
There is no way you can be in the area and not stop in for a burger. The parking lot is small and one direction so make it count when you park. No steps to enter and it's seat yourself. I like the stools at the bar. The restaurant smells wonderful of French fries, fresh burgers, and onion rings. Plates are clattering, money is exchanging and people enjoying their meal. Definitely hipster vibe for a Wednesday night.

Yelp
I grew up with Hunter House and coming back after many years away, it was exactly as I had left it. This is one of those places where you get what you order and it's just good - no frills. Two smash burger sliders and a side of fries are my go to. I love the shoestring fries - they were cooked to perfection - just slightly crispy on the edges. Inside is very crowded and it felt a little chaotic. It's far too cold to sit inside and the door slams itself shut SO LOUDLY any time anyone comes in or out that you can't have a conversation with anyone sitting next to you. That being said, I wish there was more outdoor seating.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Got a double cheeseburger. It was cheap, and patties were truly small. So small and thin, you could barely see them in the photo I posted. Maybe that's the goal. But they weren't incredibly tasty or juicy either. Service was incredibly slow - 10 + minutes for a very average burger. Peppers added were way too spicy I had to take them out. Place did not live up to the hype.

Yelp
Let me start by saying, I approach this review with a great deal of shame. Despite having grown up 4 miles south of Hunter House and having attended high school a couple miles away, today was my first trip to hunter house.....I just turned 48. I have been seriously sleeping on HH. Let me explain why. When I first learned about HH in the 1990's it was (disgustingly inaccurately) described as a place similar to White Castle. Since I find White Castle inedible, I immediately dismissed HH as a place I wanted to try. Thank goodness for Andy Issac on Twitter. I noticed a few of his tweets that included pictures and thought to myself, those burgers look nothing like White Castle! Today I finally was able to try them for myself. The place was amazing. First I love the vibe of the place. Lunch counters are some of my favorites and this is a good one. The burgers were beautiful...a nice crispy smashed burger with delicious crispy onions throughout. The sides were fantastic as well. Can't want to go back for more.

Yelp
Hard to drive by and not stop for a couple. Just a taste! Amazing smash burger sliders can be had here. They have a small takeout window or you can dine inside. If you do go in be sure to read some of the names of the hero's on the walls who have consumed an un fathomable number of sliders or double sliders. We salute you! Service is always quick, if you don't want to wait, call and order ahead.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
This place is the bomb. I've been here twice now both times it's been unbelievable. The jumbo jumbo is just too good to explain. And the onion rings were great too. There may be a wait, but it's worth every minute.
google avatar

Karl L.

Yelp
Update: Get 2 DOUBLE cheeseburgers. Everything else is the same from my prior review. Be patient, eat, be happy. Service with a smile, unless you're a jerk. It's clean and always busy, but not too crowded.

Yelp
Order at 6 pm. Told 10-15 min and it took 30! As I collected my food I told the young man to work on his time expectations for his customers. I get to my destination and open the bag to find the condiments I requested are not on my burger. AND burgers are cool and the onion rings were very hot. All in all... no thanks!!!!
google avatar

Czara V.

Yelp
Tasty and quick burgers that are simple and to-the-point! There aren't any frills added and they are the cutest size (about the size of your palm) but they are delicious! My daughter and I ended up here after her haircut, and she absolutely loved it! The spot is cute and welcoming. The staff were quick to educate us on how and what to order, and we enjoyed our lunch date very much! Will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Hunter House are Thieves! Hunter House is illegally charging a 20% service fee for any order over $50. No where on their website or in their establishment are they notifying customers of this service charge. What you are doing is ILLEGAL...it is call STEALING! I order food over the phone and because my order was over $50, they required me to pay via CC over the phone. I was then told the the total was $65. When I got off the phone, I thought I was overcharged, and at no point was I informed that there was a 20% fee added to my order. When I picked up my food, I inquired about the charge and they told we a fee was charged b/c my food order was over $50, but at no point did they tell me this prior, and there is no mention of it on their website or at the establishment. Had they told me prior, I would have probably reduced my order or just decided to take it, but at least it would have been my choice. They did not give me a choice, therefore it is stealing! "An establishment that failed to provide the required notice would be responsible for a state civil infraction; the establishment could be ordered to pay a fine of not more than $50 for a first violation and not more than $500 for a second or subsequent violation that occurred within a 24-month period." I am assuming this has happened to many other people .

Yelp
This little gem is awesome! The perfect greasy pit for a burger and fries! Great customer service and great grub.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite place to get food. The burgers are amazing. Everything is cheap and is great. Always so busy but still get food quick. Vibes are always good. Will forever recommend this place.
google avatar

Cosimo D.

Yelp
Great food. Unfortunately the timing is always off if they say 20 mins that typically means 30-35. Even ordering ahead by 1.5 hours I still didn't get my order until 10 minutes later than I was told when I ordered. Friendly staff and great food make up for the added time waiting.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
I've been coming here since 2004, since I moved to Birmingham as a kid. I stopped here again on Friday, December 29th, 2023. I ordered a double cheeseburger and fries. I thought the burger was pretty good. It came with grilled onions, pickles, and cheese. I topped it off with mustard and ketchup. The fries served were shoe string, and I greatly enjoyed them. The service could have been better, since I waited 5 minutes for someone to take my order. It was also very crowded in there, and the place is pretty small.
google avatar

Marielle M.

Yelp
I tried the "Kosher" hot dogs for the first time and I'm not confident that they are really Kosher. I have a dairy allergy and I had a reaction after eating here. Also best to come here when it's not packed with cruisers. The food is way better.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you Snyders! J. Snyder is the best she was very kind and being a full house she still gave me great service and accurate wait time. Me, being from California, this was my first slider I was informed of the size. $2.25 a burger!?! So, I got a double w/ small fry. (+jalapeño) Omg Michigan!?! 10/10 bites tasty deliciousness the grilled onion the pickles. There are seasonings available I sat at the counter (salt pepper & a Cajun? I assume for fries) the fries were plenty so I took some to go. Delicious classic spot. Must try. I spoke with a local who says she has been eating there for many years! She was very kind and this is something, an experience you don't really get in many other places. Can't wait to be back!
google avatar

Minxy F.

Yelp
I grew up on Hunter House....my dad would bring home a bag of burgers and goodies and we would watch Michigan football (go Blue!) The food is always tasty..the hamburgers/sliders are not big so you may want more than one...they are the size of White Castle NOT Wendy's. They have cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinner on their magic grill for decades with solid results. Hunter House is always busy...read that as a good sign. I carry out and they do a great job moving vast quantities of people through but on occasion you will have to wait a bit. The staff are friendly and get the job done. As it is a local institution I am more than happy to give them my business. HIGHLY recommend for a budget burger break!

Helen R.

Yelp
Burgers are great never disappointing love them very much the people in there are all ways friendly

Yelp
A classic diner-style restaurant. The location in Ann Arbor closed down due to, I'm assuming, the pandemic and I had to get to the foreign currency exchange in the area so when I saw that this location existed, I was super excited to go. Service was okay, the girls working the counter were busy so I feel like it could have been better but I got my food fresh out of the grease as usual and chowed down. The fries could have been better, unfortunately, due to the shape of the building I was located under the AC unit so my fries got cold quickly and they tasted like old deep freezer fries. Overall, it scratched an itch for me. I don't see myself coming back to the restaurant anytime soon unless I find myself in Birmingham because the juice isn't worth the squeeze due to the drive but it was still good. I hope they bring the Ann Arbor location back.
google avatar

Bianca S.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place because someone claimed it as Michigans own In & Out burger... but it doesn't really compare. It's a cute clean spot, but the burger was almost like those frozen White Castle sliders from Costco. Very plain. small. The fries were okay, they weren't salty. Pickles on the side were pretty good. There was a wait on our food, getting the order in was fast but it took a while to come out. That is expected though, I mean, fresh food in such a big area- It seems like everyone else sees the hype, I just wasn't too impressed.

Brennan G.

Yelp
I just ordered take out from this place for my family of 6. I got there to pay and they added a $15 "service fee/tip" when I asked about it they said they automatically add it for any order over $50. don't you think they would be grateful to have big orders? instead they penalize by adding an up charge?! this makes zero sense and its quite embarrassing from a customer service perspective. I will never order here again based on principle. shame on you Hunter House!

Brooke B.

Yelp
Best chili dog ive ever had i dont even like hor dogs but i came back 3 times when woodward has there cruise place is gass
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
Excellent experience with the best burgers and cheese, chili fry's. Great meals under $10 in Birmingham? Wow. Incredible team of servers completed the experience.

Joe S.

Yelp
The food was great as always! But...They raised their prices during the Woodward Dream Cruise. Example, the online menu shows triple cheeseburgers at $4.75 and the walk-up limited Dream Cruise menu was $5.25. Another situation of a business taking advantage of a situation. IMO it's BS! Also, the young immature child taking orders on register 1 around 8:30 PM Saturday night was rude when asked about their prices. Her response was, "yeah, it's the Dream Cruise". Meaning or implying that prices are higher for the weekend!
google avatar

Tyler D.

Yelp
Cheeseburgers are fantastic chili cheese dog, onion rings, chili cheese fries, and regulars fries were awesome too. Great place all the way around!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Not pretentious at all!! If you want a top-notch slider that is fresh and cooked well, this is a must try! Great value too. The patty melt is almost a life changing experience! Quick tip, lunch on weekends is always REALLY busy. Order via phone and expect it to take while.
google avatar

Alexandria L.

Yelp
Cheap, delicious, filling, fast... everything about Hunter House is loved. They have amazingly delicious burgers and their shakes are just as good. The fries are fantastic. I ordered a cheeseburger on rye and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had, Michelin star or not. Lots and lots of parking available and it's right in downtown Birmingham so you can't beat the convenience.

Reese H.

Yelp
I ate at Hunter House after a long drive on Monday, feeling very hangry. My server Nicki was efficient and extremely attentive, attending to my needs before I could even ask. I have been coming here for years and Nicki was able to make my experience feel special.
google avatar

Lyle O.

Yelp
I've gotta add my voice to the chorus of adoring customers. Everything about my meal was nostalgic, full of charm, and most of all delicious. The burgers aren't sliders and they aren't full-size. Two singles will probably do ya. Loved the friendly service and old school vibes too. This place is OG and I hope it's here forever.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
The service here is an absolute joke. They told us 30 minutes and we left after 50 while still waiting. No sign of us getting our food. We went into the restaurant to sit down and eat, apparently people who call in take precedent. Don't expect to get served unless you order ahead. Plus, the kid on the grill was horrible, seems like he can only cook one burger at a time

Moschino J.

Yelp
My experience was one to review about, the staff didn't acknowledge me once I arrived to get take out. As a black man I felt racially profiled and not wanted.
google avatar

Ebenezer's Anni L.

Yelp
I have been told by my best friend that you either love or hate this place's food. She loves it and by my stars you know what I think. I have read the reviews and thought I would give this a try since my original plans didn't work (Chick-fil-A's food truck was being moved to behind the mall). I walked in to order and waited outside for my name to called on a speaker by the front door. I got cheeseburger sliders as they are served - mustard, ketchup, pickles, and grilled onions. But the last was a BIG MISTAKE. While I am not a big onion fan, I don't mind them when the taste adds to the over all flavors. But they OVER POWERED all the others including the pickles. Plus their sliders are the size of a regular fast food burger. I ordered the tator tots and now I really miss the closed Sonic in Royal Oak. They looked like and tasted like they were cooked in very old oil. I understand that the rules for no in place dinning have hurt restaurants and money is tight, but you cutting corners only hurt your business in the long run. Glad I tried a famous historic burger joint, but won't be back.
google avatar

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
I've gone several times. I get the cheeseburger sliders and onion rings. The sliders are awesome, I would say size wise they are bigger than a White Castle. Onion rings are a bag full and quite good!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
This is a slider place meaning the burgers are smaller and different fro other burgers people are used to. This is definitely not the place to come for anything that is remotely close to being healthy. The triple was very tasty, had the amount of meat that I prefer and very flavorful. The onions were grilled and Caramelized which kicked up the burgers a notch. I would recommend getting a double or triple, as the single does not have enough nest for myself. The chili dog was really good. The hot dog had a nice crunch when bitten into abs the chili was very good. The fries were shoestring and crispy, just the way I like them. Served with pickles on the side. A nice quaint burger joint that had a nostalgic feel, definitely old school. Nothing fancy here, except good unhealthy food.

Dave K.

Yelp
This place seems to have gone downhill from what I remember. The young wait staff seemed to be less than thrilled to be there. The "open" signs were not even on. While waiting for my food they seemed to prioritize gossiping amongst each other over customer service. When my order was ready the young man basically tossed the bag at me without even saying anything. Sleepy, tired kids running this place.
google avatar

Lester D.

Yelp
Greatest place ever. Great prices, nice sized portions and friendly atmosphere!!! See you next time real soon!!!
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
First came to this place 30 years ago and it's still awesome. Basically In n Out for metro Detroit, except a little more homemade. Onion rings are amazing, shake and burgers are great as well. Just try it, you won't regret it!

Francisca R.

Yelp
Amazing burgers and fries and fast service. I come here whenever I'm in the area. Price is always good.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
It has been pre-pandemic since I have been here. I used to come here all the time back in the day. I decided to come here on Sunday for lunch. I went with Four Sliders, no pickles, and tater tots with a coke to drink. They are not doing dine-in, but they have a couple of picnic tables out in front of the restaurant. They were pretty busy when I got there. It took about 15 minutes to get my food. It was not too bad of a wait, considering how busy they were. I sit down at the picnic table, pull out the burger and take a bite. Mmm, mmm, so good. The hamburger tasted like I remember. So delicious. If you have never been, you are missing out.
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
The burgers here are great! They are sliders so they are smaller and don't feel too heavy to eat. I liked how simple the burgers were. The double cheeseburger comes with caramelized onions which is the perfect combo. The shakes were also really good! Everything was very affordable too. This place had an old-school charm to it. It's small and you order at the counter. I was able to take my food and sit by the large window looking out at Woodward. It was a great place, and I will definitely return!
google avatar

Melvo M.

Yelp
Good food this legendary place is a woodward ave must eat spot. The food is delicious to say the least.
google avatar

Melvin L.

Yelp
This is one of thee slider joints in metro Detroit. The burgers are juicy and delicious. Served with caramelized onions, pickles, Ketchup & mustard on a steamed bun. They literally melt in your mouth.
google avatar

Kristin H.

Yelp
I live in the area and was so excited to try this place out! NOT worth the hype! I would rather go to McDonalds. Wait time on a week day was 25 minutes for a carry out. The parking lot is tiny- you won't be able to find a spot. The fries were warm but unsalted and flavorless. The slider I ordered had toppings listed as "grilled onion, cheese, patty, bun" it came with pickles, ketchup, and it was completely soaked in mustard. There was no way for me to even know that these toppings came on it for me to ask for them to be removed. I also tried a coney dog- bun was dry and falling apart. Hotdog was soaked in grease. Disgusting
google avatar

Norwren K.

Yelp
Double cheeseburger and chili fries totally hit the spot, and the prices are super affordable. Just a little suggestion, though... maybe give out less pickles. Looking around the room, everyone is wasting them.
google avatar

Maaz A.

Yelp
I have been to Hunter House a couple times and the amazing thing about it is that they are always consistent. This is one of the spots my friends and I frequently go to for a quick bite and you can always expect to get good food. The feel of the place also is nice and vintage, you can really tell that they have been a staple in the community for many years. The real charm is that they focus on a few things, and they do them right. Their menu does have a variety of selections and nothing has disappointed so far. Definitely a place that I would recommend to friends and family.
