The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants - Eater

"Judy Torma founded Huszár to honor her parents, who immigrated to the U.S. after the Hungarian Revolution, and to bring Hungarian food and culture to Pittsburgh. Serving staples like goulash, chicken paprikas (stewed chicken in sour cream paprika sauce served over dumplings), and langos (crispy fried bread), the charming restaurant will have you plotting a trip to Hungary. Stop by for the annual bacon roast, a Hungarian fireside tradition that swaps the chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers of American s’mores for pork belly, chopped onions and peppers, and bread." - Briana L White

Personally, I really liked this place. The food is quite solid, but the 5 star really comes from the experience here. It's super homey. The owner (the lady) sat with us and talked to us and all the other diners, making jokes and just generally having a good time. She was very cool. The ambiance is so very nice, very Hungarian. Now the food: I tried the goulash, Lagos, chicken soup, chicken paprikas, and a cherry strudel. Most of the food was excellent. Both the soups were outstanding. Well seasoned. The chicken soup was filled with interesting noodles and was very warm, and the goulash had tender meat and flavorful broth. The langos was pretty interesting and well made too, but not my favorite. It's a street food, like a fried bread with some toppings like sour cream and cheese. It tasted a little bland and a tad oily, but the sour cream was a nice addition. The main course, the chicken paprikas, was also quite good. The chicken was pretty tender, I believe a mix of dark and white meat. The sauce is quite nice, and again the sour cream works really well here. The noodles are also very well made, very authentic. Finally, for dessert, I had the cherry strudel. I absolutely loved it, so much so that I almost forgot to take a picture (ate immediately)! Filled to the brim with cherries, soup, sweet, and perfect. Good size and fair price. Highly recommend.

Google

Google
I can’t even describe the joy I felt when I discovered a Hungarian restaurant in Pittsburgh. The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, and the food was absolutely amazing! I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for proper, healthy, and delicious food. 10/10. Important: Parking is available in front of and behind the restaurant, free of charge for up to 2 hours.

Google
What a lovely little restaurant with great comfort food. I brought my family after visiting nearby Allegheny General hospital which was only a few blocks away. We had a wonderful little feast with everyone sharing a bit of their entrees. I ordered the Magyar Schnitzel which was delicious. It was lightly breaded and the mushroom sauce and dumplings were such a treat. Overall, it is worth a stop if you are craving a locally prepared comfort meal.

Google
Excellent food, worth a visit! My family recommends the Huszar appetizer platter. The meat, cheese, veggies, fruit and bread were delicious. The sweet kraut on the Hungarian kielbasa was so good. The homemade dumplings with beef tips and gravy was also yummy.

Google
Simply amazing and authentic Hungarian food! We got chicken Paprikas and Puszta steak. So yummy and different if you haven’t tried this type of cuisine before. The personal touch was that the owner took time to talk to us and was very friendly. Definitely try this one out!

Google
Great home cooked meals with vegetarian options to choose from. The onion soup was fantastic

Google
So Good! Highly recommend. True authentic Old World cuisine. The flavors are wonderful. Kindness is repaid with kindness and respect. Bring the whole family here! Call ahead please. The paprikash as good as Mama made. They know what they're doing here, trust the menu!

Yelp
Huszar is as traditional as it comes! In the heart of Northside, is this cozy Hungarian bar/restaurant. Reservations are needed because the restaurant only has about 8 table. We were fortunate enough to walk in for a table for 2, but there were several people turned away due to not having enough space and reservations not being made. If you want traditional & authentic Hungarian food, you've found the right place. The restaurant started as a bar, owned by the father of the current owners. Once he passed away, the current owners took over and turned it into a restaurant. The owner graciously sat with us and talked about the restaurant. She even told me that my last name, Kovach, equates to Smith in English. Apparently, it's a popular last name. My grandfather was Hungarian, so it was nice to get a little taste of his culture. The owner and her husband are the only ones that run the restaurant, and they rub a tight ship! My husband & I enjoyed our meals, and here is what we had: Creamed Onion Soup: The soup's name perfectly describes what this soup tastes like. It is creamy and very onion forward. It was delicious but on the lukewarm side when eating it. Chicken Paprikash with Dumplings: This is a popular Hungarian dish, and it was delicious. The chicken was tender, the dumplings soft, and the sauce perfectly flavorful! Creamed Beef with Dumplings: My husband had this dish and he really enjoyed it. It reminded me of a more flavorful pot roast with cut up smaller pieces. Strudel: I decided to take home a piece of Strudel foe dessert. The dough was very soft, and it was surprisingly tasty! Huszar is like a warm hug on a cold day. It's comfort food at its finest, and I'll be back to try some more cuisine!

Yelp
Home-cooked and warm. I was transported to Eastern Europe, a small hole in the wall vibe. They close the kitchen an hour before closing and they mean it! We had a reservation for 6:45 and we were urged to order quickly, which we obliged. The food came out lightning fast and boy was it delightful. Rich, flavorful, and outstanding. We had the goulash and the chicken paprikas. And we even got an incredible crepe dessert (reminded us of the palachinka when we visited Croatia!) I would highly recommend (but def come well before closing!)
google avatar

Yelp
Make sure you make a reservation. Kitchen is fully closed 7:00 and trust me they won't serve you This is the most home style/homiest places I've eaten at. It's so Mom and Pop. The wife sits out on her couch in the middle of the restaurant and talks to you like your grandchildren. It's awesome. It's set up like the most Eastern European spot with so much Hungarian decor The food itself.... Very bland. Everything needed salt. The goulash broth was good and potatoes in it cooked well. It pains me to say this because the service was arguably the best I've ever had and I loved them so much

Yelp
The food was amazing and came out very quickly. We had the Bahkonyi and Stewed Beef. The service was good too until it got a little "busy." That is in quotations because even though it was a reasonable number of people coming in, the owner started getting rude with everyone. It was weird because they were not overwhelmed. They were keeping up with no problem, but she felt overwhelmed. She yelled at a group coming in even though they had a reservation. She was very short with other customers and gave one couple only two options to order since the kitchen is "kinda closed at 6," in her words. The hours say they are open until 7 but she refused to seat 2 more sets of customers at 6:15. Then the cook came out and yelled at her in Hungarian. My advice, Hire a high school kid after school to bus tables, wash dishes, and run food during dinner service. Or, if you hate people don't work with the public. I wouldn't come again, I dodged the owner's wrath at customers once and wouldn't risk a second time. It is a shame, the food was outstanding. If you are going to stop in, go early at an off time and make a reservation. If there are more than 4 people already there just leave. That will feel like too many for them.

Yelp
Let me see where do I start ... ok if you want to have dinner call and make a reservation seriously not because the place is packed but the opposite they need to know you are coming. We truly truly lucked out walked in on a cold Saturday night saw a few folks at tables as in 2-3 there are and 3 booths. there is bar but I think its just there since this place was something totally different in the olden days now on to the food its so good so savory so yum my bff said to the one and only waitress owner what do you recommend? Chicken paprikash so good so savory served with dumplings that tasted and looked like spaetzel if you know what I mean we also ordered cream of onion soup very cheesy and made a good appetizer to share beef with dumplings also tasty my bff was excited about the kremes dessert on the menu but alas they were not available we were told the pastry chef had left ANYWAY if you want a delicious meal make a reservation while were were sitting and waiting folks did come in and were told sorry no anyway I felt like I won the lottery of Pittsburgh getting a booth and a fresh cooked meal we had a slice apple strudel for dessert I hope next visit they have the kremes Remember maybe 12-18 would fill the place its tiny its on a very unassuming corner in Deutschtown this is a neighborhood that was decimated when they built the interstate reasonable prices our full meal including coffee and soda 60 bucks and worth it

Yelp
We went to this place on a Friday night at the time of our reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant was full of Hungarian cultural items such as maps and photos which gave it a nice ethnic vibe. The house was run by an old couple. The lady kept having conversation with the guests that was good. We ordered langos, goolash, stewed beef, and multilayered cake. The langos was better than what I had tasted in Budapest. The goolash was much worse. Other items were mediocre. This place was worth visiting once.

Yelp
Small family Hungarian restaurant. We were there about 4:30 pm one day, greeted by friendly couple. The wife told us multiple stories about the restaurant, living in US as Hungarian, etc. Food was excellent- we split a potato pancake; I had chicken Magyar schnitzel and wife had a kielbasa sandwich. Dessert was tart cherry strudel - must get!
google avatar

Alexa C.

Yelp
I was excited to revisit this neighborhood staple and support local business on a Sunday with my parents, but was turned away at 6:15pm when the hours say 7:00pm closing and there was a full table of diners. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Joseph T.

Yelp
Waitress refused to serve us. Walked in and asked to sit at the bar for drinks and some light food. Waitress said we needed to choose if we were just having drinks or a full meal. We decided we'd just have some beers. Waitress responded that she's not a bartender and that we couldn't stay.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
The food was good, not out of this world, but good. The woman serving us was a disaster! She yelled at us for coming though we had a reservation. She completely yelled at another table. She told us she's tired and busy. We were afraid to ask for anything like salt and pepper! I wouldn't go back. This is a pub so the atmosphere isn't great with wobbly tables and old chairs.

Yelp
I've driven by this place so many times when I worked in the neighborhood and I finally had a chance to stop by and I regret not finding this place sooner!! We got a few very tasty dishes here and the food is comforting, very flavorful and tastes like home. It's like an elevated home cooking. Not pretentious and totally delicious. The chicken paprikas is excellent. I also loved the Magyar schnitzel with the mushroom sauce and langos was such a tasty appetizer. The service was good, prompt and friendly. We loved the mom n pop feel of the restaurant. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes!

Yelp
Huszar's has delicious and authentic Hungarian food. Everything is fresh and delicious. The staff is terrific - they are knowledgeable and kind. Great soups along with every meal I've eaten there.

Yelp
We went for lunch today for my brother's birthday. It's a nice little hidden gem for sure. I had the Chicken Paprikas. The chicken was very tender and full of flavor and the dumplings were perfect. My boyfriend got the schnitzel and said it was great as well. My brother got the ribs that were on special for the day at the recommendation of our servor and oh my gosh they were amazing. Fall off the bone tender and packed full of flavor. If you see that as their special TRY IT. My sister in law got the steak and it was really good too. The service was fast and our server was very nice and was good at recommending dishes since we had never been there before.

Yelp
Great food...snitzel and gnocchi were great. Potato pancakes were excellent ( not your normal small pancake only)
google avatar

Dakini L.

Yelp
Food was great! Appetizers were so good forgot to take pictures. The portions were great. One of the owners Judy greeted us and was very welcoming. I had the steak, the fired onions were piled high and crispy. My mousse cake was delicious and was told it is made fresh! If you go during peak eating hours make sure to make a reservation as there is limited seating.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a North Side gem! If you want a truly authentic Hungarian, Olde world experience, you must give Huszar a try! The food and service were excellent! Do not skip dessert! Take a look at the pastry case for the most beautiful house made desserts! I ate here numerous times during my time in Pittsburgh. It was one of my final meals the last week before I relocated. Make a reservation so you are not disappointed too!
google avatar

Joseph E.

Yelp
This place honestly was amazing! The best goulash I think I've ever had. Also had the chicken paprikàs which was great. We brought our family of 6 and they were very kind and receptive to having young children. Highly recommend if you like Eastern European cuisine.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful meal - not quite the same as my Grandmother's recipe, but as close as I've tasted in 20 years! If you love Hungarian/Slovak food, this is the place to be. The owners and staff are friendly, and interested in discussing their food heritage. The nokedli (dumpling or spaetzle to non-natives) are incredible, and it's such a rare treat to find them in a restaurant. The Chicken Paparikish and the Gypsy Pork are both amazing, and the portions are quite large. The rich chicken soup has a deep, hearty stock base which just might contain some anise in addition to celery and onion (unconfirmed). We sat at the bar, and the service was efficient and well-informed, but there's plenty of tables too. Even better, for 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, beer, and wine our bill (with tip) was $100. Don't miss one of the most delicious and unique meals in Pittsburgh!

Yelp
Food was great, the ambiance is perfectly calm and relaxing, and the service was amazing. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Yelp
A new favorite for my family. My son wanted to try traditional Hungarian food so I looked up the options in the area for a Sunday afternoon. I have to say we were so thrilled with our choice. For a bar and grill set up it really felt more like a traditional family restaurant with a lot of love and care. Clean, inviting, and the food and service were the best we've had in a long time. So grateful there are places like this still around. Thank you Huszar for the hospitality. And by the way, don't leave without getting dessert. It completed our meal perfectly. Wonderful options.

Yelp
We were staying nearby & couldn't pass up authentic Hungarian food. The owner was fantastic with our kids. We enjoyed several dishes & shared several types of crepes for dessert. Recommend reservations on weekends. They seated us early on a weekday without one. Cozy, old world atmosphere is free!

Steffi D.

Yelp
We arrived late but our waitress let us know that the chicken paprikas and stew beef were our best bets and we were not disappointed. We added a cabbage salad and enjoyed it all. We took apple and cherry strudels home to our hosts and it was a big hit.
google avatar

Kristof B.

Yelp
Great Hungarian Food. Really good Paprikás csirke, and finish it off with Palacsinta.

Kenneth O.

Yelp
We had dinner at Huszar Hungarian Restaurant. The restaurant is in a corner tavern on a somewhat run down block adjacent to the expressway. Do not be put off by appearances. The food was excellent. Chicken paprikash and a Hungarian pork schnitzel with great sauce. Side of pickled red cabbage. Sour cherry strudel for dessert. Exceptionally savory food for a cold winter evening. The atmosphere was distinctive. A former dive bar decorated to honor freedom fighters from 1956. We liked it. We were the only guests. We enjoyed hearing the life histories of the proprietor : cook :: wife : husband and the back story on the restaurant. We also appreciated an intense and civil discussion of Hungarian and American politics. Highly recommended! We will stop here again on our drives between Ann Arbor and Washington.

Kiera D.

Yelp
yum yum yum. food is so good. had to dock a star becuase they sometimes have odd hours or close early- but what can you expect with a family run place? always has a locals atmosphere + waitstaff has that friendly Pittsburgh charm. love going here for a warm, filling meal.
google avatar

Georgia R.

Yelp
I can not believe it took me this long to visit! The grandparent's house vibe was on point and the Hungarian language and history sprawled it's dark wood walls. I got the mushroom paprikas and could not be happier with the memories of watching my grandfather cooking in the kitchen. Our waitress was attentive and just delightful. The cucumber salad was wonderful in its simplicity: cucumber, white wine vinegar, sour cream, and a sweet paprika. I will be back to this place we are most fortunate to have in this city.
google avatar

Jaimie H.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant on the North side. Authentic Hungarian cuisine and desserts made in house. The owner is very friendly. They also have a full bar!
google avatar

Adela S.

Yelp
We stopped in early on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised to find a clean and charming little bar and restaurant. We ordered beverages and langosi along with a side of cucumber salad. The food was fresh and nicely garnished with tomato and cucumber. I truly wish we would have had room to try the papricas because it looks delicious. Perhaps next time, we will give it a try. Service was no nonsense and quick and prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Divine and authentic! We came here following a trip to Budapest and enjoyed the place thoroughly. We had the langos, cucumber salad w sour cream, cabbage, schnitzel w mushroom paprikash, and bacon and cheese stuffed pork. Loved the European beer options and everything was super fresh, hot, and FAST! Not in a super great area (parking was challenging) but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience and the place is absolutely worth a visit. Our server was also lovely and professional. 10/10.

Yelp
We were really excited to try this place out! I had to triple check the reservation address and that we were walking into the right area. The restaurant is really quaint and has a unique dive bar, cool find, kind of feel.  It is an older location with the bar upfront, seating to the side, and booth seating towards the back. We had the opportunity to meet the owner as we walked in.  She was at the front and seemed gruff and really uninviting. She barked out the question if we had reservations and motioned toward the server. To highlight the limited interaction, throughout the meal you could hear her vocally discussing political options. Hey, her place, she can run it how she wants but she was really kind of rude from the moment we walked in.  We were just excited to eat some authentic Hungarian food and the food did not disappoint. (General descriptions from the menu for reference) Everything we ate was good and we would recommend it all!  For an appetizer we did the Hortobágyi Style Meat Crepe (Hortobágyi Húsos Palacsinta) - $9.95. It is a Crepe filled with shredded sautéed chicken with Paprikás sauce Hortobágy Style. My partner had the Bakonyi Pork - $15.95. Bakonyi style pork cutlet came with mushroom gravy sauce served over nokedli (dumplings).  I had the Magyar Schnitzel - $19.95. A Boneless pork loin breaded and pan fried. It was served with nokedli (dumplings) and the mushroom Paprikás. To wrap up the meal we did the Palacsinta - $3.75. A Hungarian Crepes, and we chose the Nutella filling (it is a favorite of mine).  I can not speak highly enough of our server. She was amazing, and provided great service and conversations. COVID precautions and safety were followed (social distancing, limited seating, reservations, etc) were visible.  I recommend trying this location for the food, atmosphere, and excellent server. Definitely something different and something to try.

Yelp
My wife and I are from the country - south of Atlanta, GA. We are used to country cooking. This restaurant felt just like my Mama's place. We had the Hungarian Goulash. It was much unlike what we expected. But, we were very pleased. The best beef stew I've had in a long time. Homemade bread served with it. So satisfied and happy. It was in the "soup" portion of the Menu. So well done. Thanks :)

Kendra H.

Yelp
Our first time, very good! Homemade Hungarian food with all the feels! Very homey atmosphere with a local-pub feel. We each had a pork cutlet dish, and then... dessert!

Rich Z.

Yelp
I hate to write this, because I had an amazing meal here with my wife and two kids the first time we went a year ago. But we didn't interact with the owner. Just recently, my parents were in from out of town, and I really wanted to take them here. The first sign of trouble was when I tried to make a reservation for a Thursday, and the owner grilled me on how old my kids are. The subtext was clearly that she didn't like kids in the restaurant, something I've seen confirmed from other reviews here. She also started grumbling when I mentioned it would be six people. She started giving me every reason why it wouldn't work (there's not enough people, the kitchen closes at 7 [even though I was asking for 5:30], etc). She then went into a bizarre tirade where she condescendingly told me that her place is not Applebee's, basically assuming that I was going to be some overly demanding customer who doesn't appreciate good food, even though I told her I had been there and loved her food. I said it sounded like Thursday wasn't the best day, so maybe Friday would be better at 5:30. I was very polite and thanked her for working with us, and I expressed excitement. On Friday, traffic in the tunnel was particularly bad, and we were commuting from an hour away, and I had told her we were driving all the way there just to go to her place. I had to inflate one of our tires unexpectedly, and my parents said they'd be late because of the traffic. I thought it courteous to call the restaurant and let them know. When I told the owner, she got very confrontational, saying 5:30 is 5:30, and the kitchen closes at 7. I told her we'd be just a few minutes late. She said something like, what am I supposed to do, just go with the flow and you show up whenever? I was thinking, we're just going to be a few minutes late, and it's Pittsburgh, so this can't be the only time a customer's gotten stuck in traffic. And you're a restaurant, so yeah, you do sometimes have to go with the flow. At any rate, the rudeness was a deal breaker for me, and I thought, why should we drive to Pittsburgh to patronize someone who not only doesn't want us to be there but will likely treat us rudely the whole time? Other reviews here have validated my experience. I called her back and cancelled the reservation and told her she was incredibly rude and lost our business, and you don't foster lasting customer relationships through hostility and resentment, no matter how good the food is. It was interesting to me that at the beginning of this final call, she said her restaurant was empty, but at the very end, she said she had 10 people waiting to be seated. At any rate, don't go here, no matter how good the food is. No meal is worth the experience of being resented simply for existing and for things out of your control.

Yelp
We brought my in-laws to Huszar for a birthday dinner, since my FIL was born in Yugoslavia to Austrian parents, so he was excited to eat the food of his childhood. We had the fried bread for an appetizer, which was different but delicious when hot. For entrees we had the stewed beef, paprika chicken, goulash, and lesco on potatoes. The first two are good-sized portions with drop noodles. The goulash is just a bowl of soup. The lesco came with a LOT of delicious potato wedges. We tried the crepes and strudel, but they weren't amazing, as the dough was soft, almost undercooked, rather than crispy. The wines were cheap but drinkable.

Yelp
In town for the Thanksgiving weekend and found this little gem. The restaurant is tucked into a Northside neighborhood on a corner lot. The interior is half bar and half restaurant. When we walked in we were immediately greeted by probably everyone that was sitting on bar stools at the bar. The vibe was old school working class Pittsburgh. The staff and customers were talking both in English and Hungarian so right away suspected the food would be authentic. When I think Hungarian food, my experience has been flavorful, home style comfort dishes. I was not disappointed. The service was fast, the plates from the appetizer to the main course was fantastic. What a great find. Do yourself a favor and experience the wonderful food and staff at this Northside restaurant. Put Huszar's on your must eat list when you visit Pittsburgh.

Yelp
Huszar is a Hungarian-American gem! The welcoming bar and restaurant is cozy and modest but inviting. The menu serves up a beautiful assortment of Hungarian and Eastern European treats. The signature dish is chicken paprikas, a serving of chicken and dumplings in a savory paprika sauce. The flavor is rich and delicious! If you haven't tried Hungarian, you're missing out on one of Europe's best cuisines. We finished with a chocolate torte dessert and it was lovely! Don't miss Huszar next time you're in Pittsburgh.

Jane C.

Yelp
We've had great Hungarian food in and out of Hungary and also enjoy making it at home. So we were delighted to see Huszar come across our search during a recent trip to Pittsburgh and booked a 5:45 pm reservation on a Sunday. We walked 35 minutes to get to it in what happened to be 10-degree F temperature and steady snow. Cold, but looking forward to a warm meal in what looked like a cozy place, we arrived at 5:48 pm, admittedly a few minutes late, but surely not an unforgivable sin. Many restaurants have grace periods of 15-20 minutes as standard practice. Anyhow. We neared the building, and the surroundings were dark, with no signage. We walked around the corner and found a door, but it was locked. There was a small window, and through it we could see one table occupied with a handful of people. We knocked, they looked at us, didn't do anything. We called the restaurant's listed phone number twice to ask them to open the door. Someone picked up, then hung up immediately. By now we were starting to think something might be off. We knocked again, and a woman finally came to the window, only to start yelling at us. We showed her the reservation confirmation email through the window, and she stopped for a second, but quickly resumed yelling, probably having noticed that it was past 5:45 (although some of the "lateness" of course was due to being locked out). By this time, the people at the table were laughing and apparently getting a kick out of all of this. In short, the woman's (owner's?) actions and attitude were contemptible. She came across as simply a mean-spirited and unprofessional individual, and if the people around the table were employees, perhaps this unkind attitude is their business model. We walked away upset initially, but also glad in hindsight that we didn't spend our money there. In just about a half hour from leaving Huszar, we ended up at a lovely Italian restaurant called Alta Via, which greeted us warmly from the second we stepped in. It looked busy, and we were ready for a wait since we'd shown up without a reservation, but they seated us within minutes and showed us kindness the entire time. Excellent food, too. We (and most people, I believe) don't ask for a whole lot more than some common sense and common decency when engaging with other people or businesses. In our experience, Huszar has very little if any of either.

Yelp
If you like Hungarian food - - even if you've never tasted it, you will like this Hungarian food - - rush to this place before too many people find it and it gets crowded and crazy. Great service. Waiting temporarily for an OK to serve liquor, but that should be short. Lovely people. And the food - - the chicken paprikas, the soups, the steak piled high with thinly cut onions and piles of roasted potatoes. Yum Yum Yum. Looks like a dive on the outside; but definitely dive in. You won't regret it.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the old world food and conversation with a very nice lady who described for us what was her favorites on the menu. They have a great beer selection and the food was fantastic. The pricing was very reasonable as well. We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Az erdélyi húsos lakoma az egyik kedvencem. egyetlen desszerttel és tokaji borral sem lehet mellébeszélni. Langos ez finom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Huszar is an unassuming Hungarian restaurant located on the North Side near 279. From the outside (and inside) the vibe is definitely 'old-school' Pittsburgh, all dark wood and knick-knacks with the not-so-faint aura of old cigarette smoke floating in the air. We visited for lunch and were the only customers in the restaurant (it's not really an optimal spot to get a lot of lunch traffic) but have heard that it is crowded at dinner time. The wife of the ownership duo waited on our table while her husband cooked the food. She was very kind and spent time talking to us about the food/making recommendations. The food was better than anticipated and very much in a 'home-cook' style that put taste before plating. The 'lángos' was an elephant-ear-like fried yeast dough on which floated a layer of sour cream, shredded cheese and a few onions/cucumbers. The goulash was a humble looking bowl of vegetable soup but the flavor was good. The Hungarian-style kielbasa sandwich featured a really flavorful kielbasa over a layer of sauerkraut. The gypsy pork loin was probably our favorite dish -- a pork loin pounded impossibly thin and paired with delicious crispy potatoes. We did not try desserts, but they looked awesome. There's definitely no elevation of the cuisine here but it's cooked well and is flavorful. I can imagine that dishes like these might taste very similar Hungarian homes/restaurants. Definitely feels connected to a time and place that is very Pittsburgh and it makes me wish there were more of these kind of places still around!

Yelp
My partner and I made our way up to Huszar on the North Side last night for dinner and it was spectacular. We started out with an order of lángos, Hungarian fried bread topped with garlic butter and mozzarella cheese. The texture was spot-on but the taste was out of this world. We also ordered a side of their red cabbage salad that I couldn't get enough of. The cabbage was tender but still had a nice crisp to it and it was very balanced with just the right amount of sugar and salt. I ordered the chicken paprikás with traditional dumplings. The first bite took me back to my grandmother's dining room table. The chicken was extremely tender and flavorful and the sauce was mild and perfectly seasoned. The cloud-like dumplings were the perfect accompaniment. My partner ordered the bakonyi pork and it was equally as delicious. I don't think I've ever seen pork pounded that thin and still be tender. The mushroom gravy on top of the pork and dumplings was the star of the dish but we're mushroom-loving people. The dessert case couldn't be passed up and it was hard to choose which we wanted to try. We ended up picking this three-layer chocolate mousse cake. It was light, not overly sweet and the perfect ending to a fantastic meal.

Yelp
Having never been to a Hungarian restaurant before, my wife and I decided to make a reservation at Huszar on a Friday evening at the beginning of our road trip through PA and NY. A reservation was a good idea because the place was packed when arrived, and it is not that large. We were seated toward the back of the restaurant in a booth and, because of the crowd, we had several minutes to look over the menu before our server came to take our order. As an appetizer, we ordered Langos -- crispy fried bread with a garlic cream sauce on top. It was delicious, and I could have made a meal off that alone (which might have been a good idea if I were expecting to encounter vampires later in the evening). For main courses, I ordered the lecsos steak (steak with sauteed onions and peppers in a tomato sauce and roasted potatoes) and my wife ordered chicken paprikas (paprika chicken with dumplings). For the price, we got so much food! I ate my entire entree, though I was absolutely stuffed by the time I did. My wife ate most of hers but had to take some to go. It was so delicious, and I could easily see myself as a regular if I lived in the area. If you're debating on whether to go to Huszar or not, just do it! Make a reservation or take your chances on getting a bar table or a seat at the bar itself. But just stop debating and go. If you like Eastern European food, Hungarian specifically, you'll love it!

Yelp
Huszar is a place where you fill like you went back to history. There is no bustling Hungarian community there, there is no big and hip neighborhood there. What you get is the slice of Hungary and it is pretty good. My rating is not for the decor or service. It is strictly for the food. Having tried Hungarian food before I can attest that Huszar does not provide a hybrid but a real food that would taste the same in Budapest. Between me and my sons, we tried a lot of things and everything was returned right back to the owner/server/cook, but with no food remnants on the plate. Every bite was great and yearned for more. I barely had a space for ordered Croatian beer. I was so happy to support Hungarian American business and I will gladly do it again.

Yelp
Delicious, authentic Hungarian food in a welcoming atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly. Felt like we were on a trip to Europe instead of Pittsburgh!

Yelp
Living on Central Northside for nearly a year and just now getting around to Huszar's. I don't pretend to know anything about Hungarian food but the reviews and pictures were mouthwatering. My wife and I placed a to-go order this past week to finally test it out. I love kielbasa so the kielbasa sandwich was a no-brainer and happily very good! The sausage was fresh and flavorful and paired well with the mustard and sauerkraut. I thought I would like the chicken paprika a little more than I did since I love hearty broths and enjoy spaetzel. Unfortunately I found this dish to be bland. I loaded it with salt, pepper and any remnants of sauerkraut from the kielbasa. This made it slightly more palatable but couldn't make the still-foreign aftertaste any better. I'm not a picky eater, so I think I just need to come in instead of doing to-go so that I can get new recommendations and a new perspective. Portions and prices were fair and I truly think this could be excellent food, but I just need to be cultured.

Yelp
Nasty worker/owner basically tossed us out into the rainy night after claiming we had no reservatin (I still have the email confirmation fro Open Table). Totally rude and obnoxious scolding from this person. Visiting from out-of-town with my wife and got totally humiliated in front of other patrons for absolutely no reason. WTF is wrong with people. Don't expect to be treated well or to have your resevation honored here. Ugh.

Yelp
This is a hidden in plain view gem on the edge of 279 on the north side. It's not difficult to find, but if you blink, you may miss it. Delicious, hearty food served by native Hungarian staff. Be sure to try the desserts, the pastry chef is very talented (and incredibly nice).
