Hwangnamppang (Hwangnam Bread) - Original Store

Definitely worth a try❣️ We visited on a weekend before noon, and this parking lot was packed, so we parked at a nearby public parking lot (공영주차장). You can use any public parking nearby. There was a line, but it moved fairly quickly. There’s a purchase limit of two boxes per person (20 pastries per box, 40 total). After placing our order, we kept the receipt and had to wait about an hour. We walked over to Hwanglidan-gil, had lunch and then came back. Because of the wait, it’s better not to come here right before you’re about to leave Gyeongju. We tried the pastries as soon as we got the box. They were freshly baked with Korean red bean filling. They actually tasted even better a few hours later while they were still warm. We regretted buying only one box 😄

They seem to be the original, or at least the most authentic, red bean pastry shop around. The place is well-designed, clean, and spacious, with seating available and even a restroom for visitors. Tourists can conveniently buy individual pieces without needing to purchase a whole box. The experience felt genuine and local, not touristy at all. The pastries were high quality, and there was no queue when we visited.

The red bean bread every world leaders who attended APEC 2025 especially President Xi talking about. Actually this is about clever marketing as I find the bread is only alright but that is coming from someone who is not a fan of red bean. You need to eat on the spot when it is piping hot, but there was a long queue which I have to pickup my order 1.5hrs later. Thanks.

They sell only one product, but it is hands down the best red bean paste cake I tried. I ate it fresh, it was soft, moist, hot and light like a cloud. The bread on the outside also had a bit of a nutty flavour.

Ask for the fresh / hot variety. Real yummy with beautiful red bean paste. Thank goodness you can buy individually rather than a whole box

The lines were long but it was worth the 30 minute wait.
