The 6 Most Anticipated Restaurants in Charleston, Winter 2018 - Eater Carolinas

"The name pretty much gives away the menu, but the restaurant will focus on local seafood for lunch, brunch, and dinner. Shyatt will man the front of house and London will be in the kitchen." - Erin Perkins

SERIOUSLY PHENOMENAL! We made this one of our first food stops during our Charleston visit because of all the good reviews and I must say it is without a doubt worth all the hype. Food was fabulous; the Carolina Delight grits appetizer was delicious. The mussels, fried oysters, and lobster roll were the best I’ve ever had. It was so great that we grabbed lunch more time on our last vaca day before heading home. Both times the customer service was beyond exceptional, including management. We met two of the owners, both were super friendly and genuinely seemed to take pride in their business. I honestly just can’t say enough good things about this place. Hands down, Hyman’s was a foodie highlight for us and I would highly recommend to any seafood lover!

This was legit the BEST food we’ve EVER eaten! Immediately upon arriving, we were offered free samples of their hushpuppies outside. They were absolutely DELICIOUS, and we were promptly brought inside and seated. We ordered the Wadmalaw Delight as an appetizer, and it was out within five minutes, before we had even decided what our entrees would be! It was for sure the best thing we ate here. Soon after, our meals, Chicken Broccoli Alfredo and the Crab Cake Po Boy, were out and ready to eat. The portions were out of this world and the food was so, so tasty! Our waitress was so kind and knowledgeable as well. We 1000% recommended checking this place out if you’re in the area.

My visit to Hyman’s Seafood was amazing. Everything from drinks, food and staff was amazing. My Server was Chloe G she was attentive and made sure we were always satisfied. Tobias(one of the owners) was also very attentive, made sure to table touch and check and ask for honest opinions. Would definitely eat here again if ever in Charleston again..

Do not pass by this place without stopping in to eat! The atmosphere is great, so many famous people have dined here and the decor shows it off! The service, well, amazing! Ramsey was our waitress, she was extremely nice, attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly! The owner, Tobias stopped by at each table to make sure everything was good and if there were any complaints…there were not! lol Would definitely recommend 10/10! We had the New England clam chowder, fisherman’s feast, and surf ‘n’ turf with meatloaf and fried shrimp!

After a significant wait for a late weekday lunch, Hyman's Seafood proved to be well worth it. As avid fans of fresh seafood, my husband and I were not disappointed; everything was absolutely perfect and tasted as fresh as advertised. The dishes were expertly prepared, from the flakey, succulent fresh mahi mahi to the rich and creamy lobster mac & cheese. We also thoroughly enjoyed the croquettes, which were a delicious and satisfying entree. The entire experience was delightful, including a pleasant conversation with the owner who made our friends feel very welcome in their new city. We're already planning on returning to Hyman's on our next trip to Charleston.

Google
The selection of dishes was quite limited, and the overall flavor was just average—nothing particularly impressive. The drinks were also underwhelming, lacking richness and depth, which was a bit disappointing. The dining atmosphere was pleasant, and the staff were generally polite. However, the experience did not live up to the online reviews at all. I came with high expectations, but the food and overall quality didn’t match the hype. Considering the price, the value for money was quite low. It might be worth a visit if you’re looking to check it off your list or enjoy the ambiance, but if you’re coming primarily for the food, you may find it not quite worth it.

Google
Great historic feel... customer service was excellent. Met both of the owners and they were amazing and really made us feel welcomed... Appetizer (New Orleans style shrimp was great) lobster Mac and cheese was just ok. The entree was good but fish was underseasoned. But due to the great customer service that was showed this is a must go to if you are in Charleston.

Hyman’s is a must on every trip to Charleston. The line is always long, but they have their system down to a science—no reservations, just old-school efficiency. While waiting about 45 minutes, we snacked on free hushpuppy samples and browsed the gift shop. For dinner, my husband and I both had their signature “Carolina Delight.” I went with the appetizer portion and he ordered the dinner—both were generous, with perfectly cooked shrimp, creamy sauce, and that unforgettable “grit brick” we come back for time and again. We also shared a crab cake, which was a little pricey for one, but packed with crab and worth it. Service was outstanding—our waitress Natalie B was an absolute pro, balancing a packed dining room effortlessly. Drinks never ran dry, and she answered all our questions with ease. Hyman’s is special to us beyond just the food. We first visited on our honeymoon years ago, met the owner at the bar, and he treated us to a round of drinks while wishing us well. Ever since, we’ve made it a tradition to return every year, reliving those sweet honeymoon memories while enjoying the same warm, welcoming experience.

Yelp
Wow, just wow. The food was amazing, the service awesome and management engaged. The owner visited the tables in our area and took the time to chat with each of us. True southern hospitality.

Yelp
Our waitress Tierney B was excellent. Explained everything. Refilled our drinks without asking. Super polite. She's a keeper.

Yelp
The restaurant was clean and had tons of pictures of celebrities that had visited the restaurant. The hush puppies are very airy and fresh. The slaw tasted great to me. We ordered blackened grouper, blackened flounder, blacked shrimp, fried oysters, mussels and collard greens. They were all really good and had good flavor. The cocktail sauce and secret sauce were AMAZING! The chilled shrimp was okay and we like warm shrimp better. Daniel the waiter of the tables around us was a top tier server! His guest service was out of this world. He took time to explain the menu to each guest. He had a guest that wasn't happy about different things and he went out of his way to fix the issues while being very good to the people. I have been in guest service for 26 years and they don't make many people like this! He deserves a huge thanks for being a PHENOMENAL server! We will be back to Charleston just to eat here!

Yelp
With so many wonderful restaurants in the Charleston area, this one was a bit of a disappointment during a recent visit. I stopped in for lunch on a Friday afternoon, and was seated at the bar since there was a wait for tables - it did seem that there were a lot of tables available once inside, but I guess there may have been some issue preventing them from being filled. I ordered the shrimp and hush puppies - the hush puppies were wonderful, but the shrimp was pretty bland and did not come with sauce or anything to add flavor. I would have asked for something extra, but the server who was the bartender/ oyster shucker / everything else was preoccupied and did not come to check on in. I did have a gentleman thank me for visiting as I was paying my bill, I'm not sure what his role is since he never asked about the experience, nor did anyone seem to care. This seems to be a place that it has been around for a long time and is likely historic to the area - I'm sure it was once far better than it is today.

Yelp
Late lunch before jumping on a plane back to NY. It was suggested by my (new) brother, and it did not disappoint. Summer our waitress was amazing. I'll ask for her the next time I go. She was great in helping us pick the options that were best for us. The food was even better. The Bloody Mary garnished with shrimp was phenomenal. I live in NYC and I'll be back down again very soon. Thank you to the owner Ely, who stopped by to check in and make sure we were good. Go, absolutely go here and order everything!

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner during a short stay in Charleston. Hyman's is a popular vibrant restaurant that is bustling at all hours. Despite the crowd, my family and I had a good experience. The food and service were solid, and I'd definitely return to try more from the menu. A nice touch was the complimentary hush puppies they off while you wait. I had the cod fish platter which came with shrimp, fries and hushpuppies - all of it was pretty good. Overall, Hyman's is a reliable choice when visiting Charleston and I would happily come back to explore more of their menu.

Yelp
Actually was quite good. Checked in and free appetizer was made available for us called wadmalo delight. That's grits with a special sauce and fried green tomatoes. Omg. That was so good... got to try it. That's always a plus. Another appetizer was Brussel sprouts. Unsweet ice tea to start even though hymans has a full bar. Double cheese burger done perfectly for candyce. Her side was the sweet potatoes souffle. My main was the Buffalo shrimp taco. Used the secret sauce on it. Very good. Very Tasty. Waitress was Tierney and she did a phenomenal job. She deserves a bonus.

Yelp
What a fantastic start to our visit to Charleston!! A total must of you are a seafood lover- like I am!! We started our adventure with the wadmalaw delight appetizer!! Wow that's all I can about that!! And finished with the lobster crab and shrimp po boy! I must say that was the best Po boy I've ever had!! Added the coleslaw to it and the mixture of the vinegar with the mayo mixture of delicious seafood was fantastic!! The restaurant is fun and eclectic with their decor! And the natural light from the fun stained glass windows set the mood!! Our server was an absolute delight!! Hey Montana!!! My mom did not enjoy her blood Mary at all.. And although we hate sending anything back we did.. Montana had no problem swapping the drink for the moonshine margarita flight!! Also get the moonshine margarita flight it is wonderful!!!

Yelp
Worth the wait! We arrived at 5 and were seated by 6pm. Great food! The crispy flounder was amazing. Sea bass croquette was very good as was the fried grits side dish. Very good service from Lindsay. One of the exceedingly friendly owners stopped by our table. He was very nice and offered to let us take some of the "conversation cards" on the table home with us. Hyman's will always be on our Charleston visit list! We shopped at their cute general store too.

Yelp
- She crab soup ($9.95) - Chilean seabass croquette ($10.95) - Carolina delight ($12.95) - Hush puppies (free!!) Fun fact: This restaurant is ranked #6 on the list of 150 Most Legendary Restaurants in the World My first time trying hush puppies and they were absolutely delicious! And even more so since they were giving it to us for free Super homely mom & pop restaurant that was established back in 1890s. The current owner was even making his rounds to chat with customers, including us, and handing out hush puppies to us. Super wholesome and cute experience! I also LOVE the seabass croquette and she crab soup. They surely don't hold back on the flavor. The soup was slightly too salty imo but I enjoyed it nonetheless since it's so rich and flavorful. The Carolina delight is the restaurant's take on shrimp and grits. The grits is compressed into a rectangular cake and then deep fried. This was interesting but I'll try their regular shrimp and grits instead if I'm back. ‼Bonus‼ they offer their sugar exfoliating scrub in the bathroom for you to try! They smell so good and leaves your hand all moisturized and soft after washing all that seafood off.

Yelp
Revisited Hymans over the 4th of July weekend. Still great food and good service. The fried oysters are fantastic! And the She crab soup is world renowned amazing!

Yelp
My family's experience at Hyman's was quite a good one. Be sure to get there early to add your name to the list. Knowing this we got there at 5:30 on a Thursday in June. We waited for an hour for our text message to come. We lounged around in the Charleston Place hotel lobby as we waited. You'll be happy to know that there was a gentleman serving free hush puppies on the street as people were waiting. When we were finally seated, we got a glimpse of just how large this restaurant is. The walls are covered with pictures of celebrities who ate there. It's also cool to see plaques on the tables, knowing what celebrities ate at the exact table. This restaurant certainly has lots of history and flare. All the food we ate was terrific. The menu is so huge that it takes quite a bit of time to make a selection. The hush puppies were probably the best that we ate during our Charleston family vacation. We were also surprised that the owner walked around and chatted with each table. He handed out free hush puppies, and gave free ice cream to the children. I would certainly recommend coming to Hyman's for a wonderful Charleston seafood experience.

Yelp
We just arrived in Charleston today and decided to have lunch here. The hostess said it would be a ten minute wait for a table, or we could sit at the bar immediately. We chose the bar. The ambiance was not the same. The menu has plenty of seafood options. I chose one of my favorites, shrimp and grits. It was probably the most bland version of this dish I have ever had after having ordered this at about 20 different restaurants in my life. My husband had the fried shrimp and hush puppy appetizer. It was also an average dish, accompanied by no type of dipping sauce.
google avatar

Yelp
We came because southern living magazine subscribers rated this as the best for a consecutive decade. I started with a moonshine margarita! They also have adult slushies with layers like a rocket popsicle. Great air consisting. Fun old fashioned and historic ambience. Staff was good at explaining the specials and focus areas of their large menus. Fried green tomatoes were excellent. Fried pickles had tough skins that were effort to cut and more challenging to chew - don't recommend those. Forgot to photograph Gator tail sausage was good. Taste is similar to chorizo but a solid sausage. Mom loves her shrimp and grits. My aunt liked her po boy sandwich and she has tough standards.

Yelp
Visited Charleston over the weekend and wanted to see what all the fuss was about here. We weren't disappointed! Not only was the service excellent (very knowledgeable) but so the food was as well. It was cheaper than we expected and the portions are huge. We will definitely be back. We were concerned about the wait time since they didn't take reservations however, we went an hour earlier than we wanted to eat for dinner Friday and were able to get in and seated in an hour. We just walked around and came back.

Yelp
This bar restarant is very busy, but it's worth the wait. You'll be greeted by a kind hostess who will advise you how long it will take for your table to be ready as well as, if space permits, will give you the option to wait at the bar and enjoy a nice drink - heads up, they will also serve you food at the bar, however keep in mind that the bar area is first come first serve. They have a great, great drink - a vodka peach tea lemonade, which is made with a local spirit, Firefly Sweet Tea Favored Vodka - this will be a great summer drink for my partner and I back in California, where currently, the heat is nearly unbearable. Take note, the bartender will offer to make your drink with a double shot for a paltry sum of $3.50, it's worth it. After enjoying our drinks while watching basketball on the nice big TV with the other patrons, we were seated. The table was pretty tiny, but as you can see, James Brown sat here! Our waiter promptly came and introduced herself and advised what the cards on the table were for: "The cards are supposed to be a conversation starter, not that you'll need them..." a witty statement which was funny to hear, at first, but one so witty she decided to say the joke to each and every table nearby as if she couldn't not say it, regardless, she had good customer service. After ordering our food (we got the lobster and shrimp rolls, very delicious), I went to the restroom to wash my hands. At the sink, they had two different scents of salt scrubs to try, which I did of course. The "Holy City" salt scrub felt incredible (especially after that strong vodka tea lemonade downstairs), so good that we bought one for our hotel room to enjoy since the Hotel's hand soap is akin to the lye used in Fight Club and we needed something nicer. Please note that if you do like their hand scrub, you can have it shipped to your home if you're from out of state - they also sell it on Amazon, so prime members get it quicker. But they have more scents in-store than on Amazon. Anyhow - back to the food and service. The manager was going around table to table, ensuring our experience was top-notch, he asked us to inform him if we needed anything, and while doing so, provided a sample of dessert. If you are visiting Charleston, it would be quite unwise to skip this restaurant, as it is a staple of Charleston and has been open for generations. Oh, and don't forget to check in - at the time I wrote this review, for checking in, you get a free appetizer of fried green tomatoes with a sauce on top - super delicious!! Enjoy!!

Yelp
Okay, so I feel like this is an old school nostalgic Charleston gem. It has that "cheers" vibe to it- eclectic busy walls, mostly wood- reminds me of a traditional Seafood house. I was visiting with a group of friends, some locals that said, we must- so, we did. Fish and shellfish is what it's about here and more than likely a cold beer, but they do have wine.
google avatar

Yelp
There's a reason Hyman's is famous and we have no complaints about the food, service or atmosphere. The Boom Boom Shrimp is a must try. As someone who doesn't care for potato chips their homemade chips are the perfect crunch in this slightly spicy shrimp appetizer. The flounder, oysters, and cajun fries were excellent as well! And we loved the croquettes and crab cakes, our only regret is that we ordered too many fried items which is completely on us because everything tasted great! Lastly, the dessert is phenomenal! Try to leave room at the end as they have plenty of options for every type of dessert lover.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by based on a search and good reviews and it did not disappoint. We sat at the bar since the wait time was 40+ min. Our server/bartender was friendly but the drinks were just okay. As for our meals we ordered the Charleston She Crab soup, we built pur platter with a crab cake, salmon croquette and a seabass croquette with sweet potato soufflé and a fried meat dish that I don't remember what it was all were good and we left satisfied with our meals.
google avatar

Juliana D.

Yelp
We absolutely loved our lunch at Hyman's. You're transported back in time walking in, with a beautiful old staircase and cool wooden walls. The servers are all so friendly. Even the owner stopped by our table and said hi to make sure we were enjoying our meal. We had great (strong) bloody Mary's. Not the best Bloody Mary I've ever had but pretty good. The party trio and crab cluster was Amazing!! Particularly loved the crab cake and branzino cake in the party trio. Don't skip these! Brussels we're delicious, great hush puppies. We could have skipped the Mac and cheese as it was a bit wet for my liking. We'll definitely be back here on our next vacation to Charleston!

Yelp
A Lowcountry Tradition: Hyman's Seafood If you're looking for a truly authentic taste of South Carolina's celebrated seafood heritage, look no further than Hyman's Seafood. This unassuming restaurant has been a beloved local institution for decades, acquiring an almost legendary status among residents and visitors alike. From the moment you pull up and are warmly greeted by the friendly staff, you know you're in for an exceptional experience. The service at Hyman's is simply stellar, with servers who seem to genuinely care about each patron's experience and take great pride in their work. The interior is refreshingly unpretentious, with a mishmash of worn tables and chairs that have seen countless crab leg cravings satisfied over the years. But this well-loved atmosphere is kept impeccably clean and maintained with great attention to detail. But it's the food that's the true star - a greatest hits lineup of classic Lowcountry seafood dishes executed to sheer perfection. Whether you go for the lump crab cakes, peel-and-eat shrimp, she-crab soup, or whatever fresh catch of the day strikes your fancy, every bite is a testament to the bounty of the local waters and generations of culinary tradition. The portions are hearty and the flavors are bright and distinctive, never drowned out by excessive sauces or fussy preparations. You can taste the natural sweetness of the shrimp, the delicate brininess of the crab, the tang of the perfectly-seasoned batter on the fried seafood. It's seafood in its purest, most satisfying form. An overview of Hyman's famous seafood platter feels necessary: Overflowing with crispy fried shrimp, flawless deviled crab, golden hushpuppies, and some of the best cole slaw you'll ever have, it's an embarrassment of Lowcountry riches on one tray. With its fantastic food, low-key vibe, humble origins, and stellar service with great attention to detail for every patron, Hyman's encapsulates the very best of South Carolina's seafood traditions. It's a true taste of the region that simply should not be missed.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with Hyman's seafood. Not only have they been in business for decades, but that business has been strong! They are deceptively large compared to the "street view" and definitely overachievers. Eli, Victor, and all the staff will stop at your table just to say "Hello", or descend upon you like a rescue squad if you have any concerns about your meal. Not bragging on them folks, just say'n. Bottom line - Hyman's is my go to for local seafood with exceptional preparation. Locals know. Now you do too.

Yelp
4.5 stars This place is popular and we waited about half hour to get in on a weekday night. Service was a little slow at first. I had a free coupon from the airport for the shrimp crab spread. Our server also brought us free hushpuppies (we also got a hushpuppy sample while we were sitting outside waiting), free boiled peanuts, and free coleslaw to start off with. I had been eyeing the oyster po'boy, but with all the extra free food, I got the crawfish appetizer ($10.95). It was more than enough but I was expecting more of a fried crawfish dish. For $24.95, my dad got the platter with the buffalo shrimp and the fried oysters (both were very good) with the southern red rice. We also got two samples of the boozy slushies. This place also has a lot of history based on the photos and plaques on the walls. Overall, a very enjoyable and tasty visit. 2024 #6

Yelp
I know this a local institution but, this more of a 3.5 star place for me. We sat at the bar to avoid a 30 minute wait for a table and while it was a tight fit for 3 people, we were good. The oysters are shucked at the bar and that was a nice touch, the bartenders seemed to have too much going on. We had oysters ($18 dz, I think) and they were a good size and had a great flavor. The she crab soup was delicious!!! I had no problem turning up the bowl to finish it off but it was $12 for a bowl that was cup size. The mussels appetizer was a big serving and the sauce was delicious!! While the food is legitimately good, it just didn't have the magical effect on me that it's had for others. The space is pretty casual but a fun, relaxed atmosphere but keep in mind, bathrooms are upstairs and I did not see an elevator.

Yelp
To the owner: The "tone" of your reply is not like the rest of your replies to your other customers who did not have a great experience, which is extremely disappointing. If you advertise something as a "LOBSTER CRAB SHRIMP ROLL" I would expect it to have all three inside of it, not two out of three. I know this is a new menu item for your business so taking my constructive criticism is important, not your personal opinion. If your other customers liked it, that's great, BUT I DID NOT! The point of this platform is to review places that people visit and if you don't like what I wrote, DO BETTER! Season your food, tell your hostess to tell your customers about your policies when it comes to seating, and learn how to take constructive criticism from customers who spent over $300 in your establishment. This place is OVERRATED, OVERPRICED, and OVERHYPED! My group of nine waited for an hour and a half to be seated, even though there was a group of 20 who came after we did and got seated before us. The waitress was extremely nice. Once seated, we ordered a variety of food. I ordered the "lobster roll" even though it was made with crab and shrimp instead of lobster. It barely had any flavor, I had to add my own seasoning to make it edible. The roll was extremely over toasted, making it hard to bite. The best thing I had was the Cajun fries. They were hot, crispy, and fresh. The next time I visit Charleston, I will not come here to eat.

Yelp
Great place. Highly recommend walking by and trying the hushpuppies'. If you get them inside, try with the sweet sauce. . Their fish and grits is delicious, I tried the sea bass. Service is also great. We ate at the bar and Rene was so friendly we felt we knew her for years. Their crab cakes and other fish are also delicious . I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Overall experience is 5 stars. Both Eli and Victor are on point and make the experience a joy to watch. Add about 10-15 minutes to the wait time, this is the south so go with the flow ( not easy for us New Yorkers). Server was charming either way big smokes and great positive attitude. For food we had some soups (clam chowder and She crab soups) very creamy. We had the lobster, crab and shrimp sandwich, Carolina delight and fried chicken. The food is good, not great, but the experience is 5 star. It's a team effort and all the employees are all in. Eli can't to our table when he was asked about the lobster salad, he brought some over to try. He spent time sore as king of the history and to see this father and son work together is a true representation j ok Charleston.
google avatar

Catherine F.

Yelp
BEST DINING EXPERIENCE!!! For several good reasons, it is very popular. They had someone handing out hushpuppy samples by the front of their door, which brilliantly entices more customers with their delicious taste and also ensures that their customers aren't starving while they wait for a table. After you're seated at your table and waiting for your food, it's easy to pass time by exploring the different colored cards (similar to Table Topics) categorized in the middle of the table. Mr. Hyman even walks around with samples to the Shellfish Delight appetizer! Our server was very friendly, and the dishes that we ordered were all very delicious. This place is also huge; they have a store at their exit with souvenirs and salt scrubs for sale. You can definitely tell that a lot of thought and effort were put into making this place so amazing, and everyone here has a joyful attitude!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Very popular location in downtown Charleston. Tried local red fish special and Brussel sprouts, she crab soup with Sherry. Very tasty

Yelp
We came through on March 19, 2024 for an early lunch. Lindsey was absolutely the best!! It was a little busy but she was on her job and we waited for NOTHING! Kareem greeted us while we waited and was a delight!!! Great job as always!! We will be back!... Now to rate the food. All of it was delicious!!! The only "B" side was the Mac n cheese. It wasn't bad, I just prefer the baked Mac n cheese. They served boiled peanuts and hush puppies free of charge if you follow on Instagram. We followed! The hush puppies were GREAT!! We like the sweet version and this was it! Make sure to try the secret sauce. It was great on everything we put it on! The flight of frozé slushies was not strong so we were able to nail it! Wait, one was strong it was the peachcolada. I loved it! You can NEVER go wrong dining at Hymans... or bar hopping here. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and knowledgeable. On the way out, another manager checked on us and I thought that was great. Customer service is the best there! Until next time!!

Yelp
I came to Hyman's back in September. I was in Charleston for a quick getaway with my friend. I heard about how they sometimes offer hush puppies while you wait for your table and so when I saw a fresh batch come out with a server, I was more than happy to give it a try lol. Their hush puppies are delicious! The menu had a lot to offer and was reasonably priced. I ended up ordering the chicken and waffles. The chicken tenders could have used more seasoning. It was decent. I really loved the syrup and the waffles were good. Our waiter was attentive and checked on us frequently. I loved the atmosphere in here and all the pictures they had hanging on the walls. So many celebrities had patronized this restaurant. My table said that Sarah Jessica Parker once sat here, haha. All in all, it's a nice option for food in Charleston. I'd return for another opportunity to try something different on the menu.

Yelp
Came on Tuesday with a group of 6 around 1330 and only waited for 20-25 min. Had the two meat combo which came with Cole slaw. The Cole slaw was too tangy and sweet. The fried flounder was ok and the buffalo shrimp was also good. Mashed potatoes were good as well. Overall, great experience and would return again.

Yelp
I was attending a conference in Charleston, and while we were walking around, we saw this large mass of people waiting to be seated here - looking at their windows, we saw this restaurant had been identified as a "must eat" restaurant on a global list. Naturally, we cancelled our reservation for dinner we had the following evening and came here. We could not find a link to make a reservation so I don't think they take reservations. We waited to be seated for approximately 50 minutes. The restaurant passed out hush puppies to people waiting outside. The hush puppies were a bit sweet and dense inside. We were seated upstairs and while we were waiting the owner came around and spoke to all the patrons with more hush puppies. I chose the She Crab Soup and Prince Edward Muscles with greens. We were given coleslaw and, you guessed it, a hush puppy while waiting for our food. The soup was creamy but didn't have a lot of flavor. It was my first time trying this so maybe it is supposed to have a mild flavor? The muscles were so disappointing - the cream sauce was odd but the real issue was the ratio of closed mussels to total mussels and those that were opened, half had grit that was included for my dining pleasure. Cleaning the mussels is seafood 101! The garlic bread was tasty and the greens were ok. My coworker's sea bass croquette was fantastic - I had dinner envy! It was definitely the highlight of this meal. We must have caught the kitchen on an off day because people seem to love this place so definitely try for yourself. The service was very good! You must exit via the gift shop a la Disney style.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Heavy pour on drinks and for a good price! The home made chips were AMAZING. Our bartender was so quick and nice. Drinks were yummy and so were the appetizers. Friendly service starting from giving your name at the door. Fun dining space & would love to return.

Yelp
What I love about Hyman's: the fact that they hand out free hush puppies and the owner stops by your table to check on your service. What I don't like: complete tourist trap. The food tastes different every time you visit and the quality of the seafood just isn't there. Plus, there's always a wait even with a black card. It's also very dated and could use a makeover.

Yelp
After reading the reviews and the history of Hymans, we decided to stop by for dinner while we were visiting Charleston. We ended up deciding to eat in the bar, because seats opened up just after we put our name on the 45 minute waitlist for a table. The bartender was amazing, she was so nice and even though she was super busy, it never felt like it, because she was so attentive to all who were sitting in the bar. By chance we arrived just before Happy Hour ended. Happy Hour prices in the bar are great, so definitely recommend if you arrive before 6:00. We ordered their Carolina Delight, the Wadmalaw Delight and hushpuppies. Although the hush puppies we ordered were really tasty - and it is such a nice touch that they offer these to everyone waiting for their reservation, the ones we ordered in the bar were too oily, literally filling the napkins I placed under them to drain the oil. Perhaps the fryer temp was running a bit low the night we ate there? For the Carolina Delight, we ordered one sea bass and one shrimp. Fun menu item and the croquettes were good, as were the lightly fried grit cake and parmesan cream sauce. The Wadmalaw Delight includes fried green tomatoes served over grits, topped with parmesan cream sauce and cheddar cheese. Though the grits were a bit on the watery side, so not as creamy as we would have liked, especially since they list creamy grits as the part of this menu item. Also, the green tomatoes were a bit oily.

Yelp
Enjoyed our evening at Hyman's. Loved the opportunity to try the hush puppies and boiled peanuts. The fried pickle spears were delicious. Our meals were good and side of butter with the broiled fish would have added to dinner (next time I will ask for some on the side).

Yelp
Dynamic! Sat at bar Alexa and Josh were amazing. Had the two fish platter, chose fresh grouper and shrimp scampi excellent. Start by saying I'm from Chicago and I'm a total foodie....We waited a while for food which meant everything was being prepared fresh. . It was well worth the wait. Please know my husband is a non-seafood eating person. He ordered the burger and as much as I love fish, I would come back and have a burger here the burger was outstanding . What a great place we are relocating to South Carolina Charleston area and will definitely be back here. Thank You!

Yelp
Out of all of the many places we ate at while in Charleston, this was my absolute favorite! It's an experience from beginning to end! You'd never know just from walking by, how fun and large and busy it is inside! They have notecards at the table for endless entertainment. You can get a free appetizer when you show them you follow them on Instagram. One of the owners came by at some point and gave us samples and gave our daughter a coupon for a free ice cream from downstairs in their shop. The food felt homey and satisfying and the portions were great! I still crave the fried green tomatoes I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Charleston.

Yelp
This place is charming. When waiting outside for a table a man drove up on a bicycle and asked for some food. The hostess went inside and came back with a to-go bag of food for him. Then I saw this sign on the window. (See post photos). Also, when we were waiting for a table the hostess handed out fresh hush puppies. They were warm and tasty. There are little brass name plates on the tables which denote where celebrities once sat. We sat at Samuel Jackson's table. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and the hush puppies. Everything we ordered was delicious. I liked the fried green tomatoes best. There are cards at the table with interesting notes on them. My favorite was the "Circle of Life" card. Sweet sayings and nice annotations line these cards. In the bathrooms there are hand salts which they sell at the restaurant store. I purchased one of the water bottles used in the restaurant at the store. The bottle has Charleston on it and is a nice shape. This not a fancy place and is very comfortable.

Yelp
I was in Charleston, and my coworker made the suggestion to drop in for lunch, as it is one of her favorite places. There was a wait, so we decided to sit at the bar. The hostess was very nice. The bar staff was okay. One of them was a bit more polite than the other; nevertheless, we did not go without while we dined, and our questions were answered when we were ordering.   I ordered the three-selection combination with fried shrimp, flounder, and the sea bass croquette with fries. It also came with hush puppies. The fried shrimp were so good. The flavor was delicious, and they were fried well too. The sea bass croquette was a great size, had a strong fish taste, and was tasty too, especially with the Hyman's secret sauce. I loved the hush puppies as well. The flounder was okay. It was not terrible; however, it was not outstanding. I could have gone without it. I don't like when anyone uses the word fries to refer to potato wedges. They are two totally different things. If I had known their version of fries was actually potato wedges, I would have ordered a different side, as I am not a fan of potato wedges. If you like potato wedges, then you most likely will enjoy them. They were seasoned and seemed fried well and fresh.    Overall, it was a great experience. Especially with the general store next door.

Yelp
First of all, Hyman's Seafood went above and beyond for my friend who lost her ring at the general store. Ill start this review about food- since I know that's what most of you are here for, but second half of the review will be solely on the amazing service we recieved. To start, they were having hushpuppy samples as we waited for a table to become available. Then, we got upstairs were we sat at the same table as Jessie McCarthy. Our server was very sweet, and as mid-westerns we had a few questions about the menu. We both got the meals- I got the shrimp & grits, crab cakes (my all time favorite), and sides of hushpuppies and red beans and rice. I really don't think you can go wrong with anything here. At the end of our meal, someone had come around giving all the tables the shrimp, crab, and salmon dip I believe. It was the perfect sample size to end our meal. As we exited the top floor down to the general store, everyones food looked so good. If Im back in Charleston I will definitely be coming back to Hyman's. Once we got to the general store, we of course wanted to try alllll the salt scrubs. We ended up buying two salt scrubs and a tee shirt. Later that night, my friend realized her ring was gone. We figured it was probably left from when we were testing the scrubs. We called the restaurant and immediately the manager was on top of it. They looked through the security tapes and helped up figure out what happened. We really really appreciated this. They went above and beyond and were supportive of us doing a little investigation. I think this just goes to show how much they care about providing a friendly and supportive environment.

Yelp
Super cute seafood place. There was a short wait when we arrived on a Thursday afternoon. A hostess came out with fresh warm hush puppies, they were pretty sweet and tasty. Our server, Lily, was so kind and accommodating. I didn't care for the Lobster Bisque and she was quite kind to take it off our check. The owner came around with a sample of their new seafood dip, very good! Started with the Froze' flight, yumm! The Wadmalaw Delight was delicious and crisp, that house sauce is divine. For my meal I had the Carolina Delight, appetizer size. It was a huge portion with delicious shrimp and that grit cake, wow! Highly recommend. My companion had the alligator sausage Po' Boy and it was humongous. All in all a fantastic experience and would recommend if you visit Charleston. Some places don't deserve the hype but this place does.

Yelp
Fantastic meal! I was expecting just an average seafood meal and was pleasantly surprised with how well the food was prepared. Service was top notch and the ambiance is fun and cozy.
