My mom used to take me to I Love Sushi 20 years ago at their old location in Bellevue but hadn't been back until this past month to celebrate my birthday.
We made reservations for dinner on a Sunday for 7pm. They were quite busy as even with reservations, they didn't have enough staff to tend to the check-in counter and so we waited for 15 minutes before being seated.
I Love Sushi is obviously known for their sushi and so their menu is mostly just rolls, nigiri, and sashimi. However, they have a small selection of hot entrees including udon and curry. We ordered the NABEYAKI UDON, PLATINUM SUSHI PLATTER, GRILLED SALMON BELLY SET, DRAGON ROLL, and RAINBOW ROLL.
The NABEYAKI UDON was just alright but didn't have a lot of toppings. It had an egg, a mushroom, some fish cake, seaweed, and one tempura shrimp. The broth was pretty salty and so I didn't drink much of it. It was nice and hot for a cold fall day at least.
The PLATINUM SUSHI PLATTER (+ $120) was fantastic and had a great variety of tuna, salmon, squid, shrimp, sea urchin (uni), and Ikura (salmon roe). You can tell that the fish they use is of very high quality. It came with 22 pieces of sushi which is supposedly enough for 2 people. The uni was absolutely amazing and super rich and fresh.
The GRILLED SALMON BELLY SET was also wonderful. The salmon belly is rich and fatty and melts in your mouth. The salmon skin is extremely crispy and oily- I would 100% get this again. You can get the salmon on its own or get it as a set (+$5) which comes with a side of miso soup, salad, and rice.
The DRAGON ROLL (8 pieces) was a great change of flavor from the rest of the meal as it was both sweet and savory due to the unagi sauce. It had eel, cucumber, and avocado.
The RAINBOW ROLL (also 8 pieces) and is my favorite roll to get at Japanese restaurants, had thick slices of salmon, tuna, shrimp, and avocado wrapped around a California Roll. It was absolute perfection.
Lastly, our waiter gave us free dessert for my birthday which was a CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM MOCHI in whipped cream. You can tell that they let the mochi sit at room temperature for a little bit so that the inside is just a little thicker than soft serve ice cream. It was a great ending to an amazing dinner.
Once we were seated, service was great. Our waiter, Alex, was extremely friendly and attentive. He came by several times to refill our tea and water, clear our plates, and check in to see how we were doing. He even sang Happy Birthday with my family when I brought out dessert- so kudos to him for making my birthday dinner a memorable experience!
As far as atmosphere, the interior honestly did not match the high prices and high quality of food. The inside was fairly dark and needs a new paint job and carpet. It's definitely not a fancy restaurant by any means, but the menu prices state otherwise. You do get a view of the manmade Lake Bellevue and they have outdoor seating under a plastic tarp, probably from Covid.
Overall: 5/5 for food, 5/5 for service, 3/5 for atmosphere
