Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church (Church of the Light)

We visited today knowing in advance that there are no guided tours, but we hoped that - based on the signage announcing Wednesday morning prayers - we might at least get a small glimpse inside. Unfortunately, no one showed up for the service. The experience from the outside was still wonderful - the building is restrained, powerful, and inspiring to see in person. However, it is disappointing that there is no way to enter, as access to the entrance is blocked by a barrier and a sign asking visitors not to cross into the courtyard.

I'd like to say it needs to understand the context of the church by walking and looking around its surroundings. I know some people can be disappointed when they see for the first time. The outside of church doesn't look awesome. (Because of many reasons, the inner tour is stopped. Nevertheless, I love it) However, I believe the church harmonizes well with its surroundings; many cozy houses with second floors. The church is only a church for this town, not a landmark like the effeltower in Paris. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it while enjoying its context.

It’s a church first. It’s an architectural attraction second. I pray that they will be able to re-open their doors soon. God bless those old parishioners who are unable to attend now. John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me”. Tadao Ando designed this beautiful church with unusual architecture not usually associated with churches, very thought provoking and there are multiple intricate details. Light is used in a gorgeous fashion. It’s in a residential neighborhood. Pray for it to reopen.

I visited almost ten years ago and finding myself in Osaka this year, thought why not go visit again? I’m saddened that the church was forced to close its doors because of the entitlement some people have over the religious space of others. There’s mention of trying to sneak in during services (by people of very blatantly different faith), that if “there’s people on Sunday there anyway” they should let others in and then others accusing the congregation of being “bad christians” for not allowing their house of prayer to become a public attraction. I say, keep the doors closed to those who wish to visit at the expense of the congregation’s peace.

I was looking forward to visit but it says closed because they no longer have enough volunteers or money to keep running the regular tour visits. So sad. I've seen harsh comments from outsiders but the problem is bigger than it seems. This is a wake-up call for believers to step up and support their local church. More than money, hands are needed for a church to keep going. Also, a wake-up call to all church leaders to empower the next generation otherwise any church could die. But even if this one stays as a 'famous building', would that be so bad? I think the Church can be smart enough and use that to its advantage (that's not a sin) and to even find more creative ways to keep spreading the gospel with that. I pray tradition or man-made rules don't ever shadow the potential the Church has always had to adapt and surpass the tribulations of its time and period. May you, Church of the Light, resurrect as Christ! Don’t be afraid and keep shining as a lamp in a high place. My prayers are with you! That more volunteers arises to help you manage everything at ease! May God give you wisdom to find solutions to every battle you have encountered! May your members stay close to the good memories and that your eyes are fixed on God and not the evil from men (or tourist), may other churches support you! 🙏

Beautiful piece of architect. Todao Ando is a genius. His attention to detail, angles, light and materials is extraordinary. It was a trek from where we were staying in Kyoto but soooooo worth it! You need a reservation to visit so make sure you look into that before going. Amazing!

Beautiful church with lovely people, so kind and helpful ... loved the whole experience !

It was disappointing not to be able to go inside, however the church was still worth visiting. I really enjoyed visiting Tadao Ando’s famous building which inspired many of my early projects as an architecture student. I recommend making the trip here if you can
