Serving as a key visual touchstone, this famous church in Japan, designed by Tadao Ando, is characterised by strict, contemporary brutalism with a lot of concrete and no windows, and a striking cross made purely of light. That luminous cross was looked at as soon as the script was read, because it mirrors the cross reflecting on the altar in The Institute, and its severe beauty helped shape the way László’s own architectural vision was imagined. - Phil de Semlyen
