ICHI Sushi Review - Bernal Heights - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"A friend of mine once went on a date with a guy who ate sushi with a fork. Should have taken him to ICHI, where there’s a big mural with sushi-eating instructions. Pointers include: “eat sushi in one bite,” “hold sushi rice-side up,” “no soy sauce necessary,” and “pour for each other.” That said, he did also order a strawberry daiquiri, so the problem really was a larger one. We’ve been hearing people rave about ICHI for lots of time now. And by “people,” we mean the kind of people who insist on using the Japanese names for fish (“You mean CHU-TORO, right?“), and study the varieties of sashimi like they’re Civil War battles. In other words, people who are serious about sushi seem to love ICHI. So we finally strapped on our big kid pants and trekked into the very, very edge of the Mission-almost-Bernal-Heights to check it out. While we can’t say we are going to jump on the obsession bandwagon, we can attest that everything on the menu is solid to strong, and there are some surprises that you definitely shouldn’t skip. Mostly, skewers. I know, we are those lame people who order meat on sticks at sushi restaurants. We also probably take cruises around the Florida coast and pay only for the Hot Country Sirius XM station. FALSE. We are bold food adventurers who take cruises around the Nova Scotian coast. But yes, when we eat at sushi restaurants we sample all the wares, raw, cooked, fish and fowl. And let us be the first to tell you that the skewers at ICHI are the sh*t. As for the fish, many of the seasonal fish options were excellent, but we were a little disappointed with the rice, and there were a few cuts - shrimp, octopus, scallop - that didn’t knock our socks off. That said, if you round out your order with picks from across the menu, you’ll leave pretty happy. The vibe and set up is pretty classic, new, upscale Japanese with a sparse, clean interior. Despite the rules on the wall and the serious-about-sushi crowd that ICHI tends to attract, the place is pretty laid back and unsnobby overall. Even fork guy would probably like it here. Food Rundown Shishito Peppers Better and bigger than average, and good to share. A little lemon juice and unidentifiable shavings brighten them up. Bincho Tataki We were instructed to fold the tuna pieces up like tacos to eat and we willingly complied. The crispy shallots and salty tobiko are perfect, and the tuna is quality fish. Cucumber Salad ICHI has acquired the world’s crispiest cucumbers and covered them in an insanely good miso tahini sauce. Order this. We would eat steel wool dunked in this sauce. Seaweed Salad Very heavy on the sesame oil, and a little crunchier than normal. It’s OK, but you can do better. Skewers These are the truth. We sh Pork Shoulder: Magic pig. It melts off the skewer. Beef Flank Steak: They know how to cook steak, tender and flavorful. Get some yolk on that for good measure Chicken Meatballs: Served three per skewer, these were the only ones recommended to us, and ended up our least favorite. Still excellent, but not as incredible as the other meats. Rolls All the rolls are super simple. No tempura or crazy mayo drizzles. We support this, and are big fans of anything involving yellowtail. Nigiri Choose wisely. Tuna belly and sea bream are by far the best fish cuts, and for the veggie options the eggplant is crazy good. The rice was dry and not particularly seasoned, and the pieces of fish seemed on the small side, but we weren’t mad at any of the options - some are just a step above the rest." - Taylor Abrams

Google
I LOVE THIS PLACE! Thank you Ichi for such amazing food for such an affordable price. Y’all the real ones! Not trying to inflate prices and still making delicious food. Thank you for all your hard work and great food and service! 5 stars for everything. Such a great asset to Punta Gorda 💗

I stopped for lunch today, 11-30-24, and was very pleased with their food and prices. I ordered Tempura Shrimp Roll and their Hibachi Shrimp Bowl. Both were cooked perfectly. I ate the sushi so fast I forgot to take picture of.

Google
Woman owner is extremely RUDE! Made a nasty face when I asked her something on the menu. I had questions about the noodles, she raised her voice and slammed my receipt on the counter. I have been coming here for 8 years, but never again! Food is quite good but I will NEVER refer this place or return. Someone needs to remove her from the front counter. Customer service is horrible! You LOST a faithful customer!

Google

Google
I ordered a steak bowl and some volcano rolls which were very interesting looking. The entire meal, including what my other friends got was delicious. I would definitely go there again and recommend it if your sand of Japanese hibachi.

Yelp
A must try food made to order. I have the noodles and the steak hibachi cooked to perfection. My children also had the chicken teriyaki along with a ginger salad. Everything was delicious.

Yelp
Bruce and I went to an event at Perch 360 at the Wyvern, and we were still hungry afterward, and I told him there was a sushi place next to Shorty's and asked if he wanted to try it. So, we went on in and it was already around 8:15, and we were concerned we wouldn't get good food because it was close to closing time. Well, we were wrong! Everything we had was fresh, from the two sushi rolls to the freshly-made shrimp and vegetable tempura. The standout was the shrimp potstickers. We both thought they were either homemade in the restaurant or the absolute top quality of pre-made potstickers. These were pan fried perfectly and absolutely fresh and delicious. This is a family-owned, family-run restaurant. We saw a lot of younger clientele and as it's so hard to get decent sushi in the area, we highly recommend Ichi Hibachi. It's a casual restaurant and you order at the counter but if you're in the mood for tasty sushi and good Japanese hot food, this is the go-to place in Punta Gorda. And - reasonably priced! Very welcome these days when you can get a horrible $18 hamburger at the tiki bar while you get tuned up.

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner with the family and was very impressed! I got the steak and shrimp hibachi and it was delicious!! It was a great portion and price and came with mixed veggies, fried rice, and some miso soup. Everything was cooked perfectly. The steak was medium rare like I asked and the veggies were crispy but still cooked. I asked for extra yum yum sauce and they brought out a whole bunch. Everyone was happy with their meal. Others at the table got sushi and udon noodles. I am looking forward to going back!

Bob Z.

Yelp
Had a couple bowls and chicken teriyaki. All flavorful and plentiful and reasonably priced. Did take out. Was on time. Will be back. New favorite Asian place.

Yelp
I was in the mood for sushi. It was my first time eating here. Everything was superb! You can't beat the price and the food is delicious and fresh. I will definitely be going back.....often! I got the Chocolate City Roll. It was the best "roll" I've ever had! You have got to give it a try.

Heather F.

Yelp
Huge portions, fast, friendly and clean. Try it if you are in town. Had the tofu and vegetables.

Donnie B.

Yelp
We went for lunch and found the food to be amazing! The place was spotless and tidy and the entire staff was polite and eager to please. The prices were extremely reasonable. This is a place I would never hesitate to visit again. I am definitely a satisfied customer.

Yelp
Nice place of a night out. Had the traditional hibachi fair and we had a good time. Prices were as expected and the food was tasty. Nice night out with the family!

Yelp
Ichi Hibachi Okay, this place is so legit! They do the hibachi in the kitchen, no show in front of you, but the flavor is so clean and good! It's like they don't use a lot of oil, so the meats and veggies seem clean, and crisp. We had 2 rolls, the Mexican Roll and the Party Roll, both were good, crisp rolled seaweed papers. For an entrée, my husband and I shared the Steak & Shrimp, as previously mentioned, fresh and clean, the meat was tender and MR, the Shrimps were plump and not overcooked. We had a glass of wine and a beer with our meal. I really like this place! It's not crazy cool atmosphere, but it's always busy and I don't know what it is, but I feel very comfortable eating there. Go, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hibachi without the price of them cooking it right in front of you.

Yelp
Pretty fast pretty good too-not quite as good as place on folly road but worth it Parking and ingress egress is a challenge sometimes
google avatar

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by Ichi Habachi! You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. Very friendly, very good, very reasonable. I will be back for more habashi, more sushi and more saki!!

Yelp
Inside: very clean and organized Seating: plenty of seating tables and booths Food: I had the Sushi rolls spicy tuna and salmon, both were great. (6.50 a piece) Tasted fresh and had a bit of a kick (for me). My friend had the steak hibachi bowl and he said it was delicious also. Recommend: yes I would recommend trying this restaurant I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Linda W.

Yelp
Great place to get into for a fast bite and the hours work for a spur of the moment decision not to cook
google avatar

Yelp
A new restaurant that opened about 3 weeks ago. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Typical hibachi and sushi options. The sushi was delicious, but the hibachi was just fine. Portion sizes are good, so come hungry! They have standard beer and wine options. There's a few chain locations around Florida so I hope this location does well!

Yelp
Our first time here. Great location downtown Punta Gorda, nice staff and clean restaurant. I'm not always in the mood for fish so I ordered chicken over rice. The picture of my dish is included and is exactly what it looked like when we walked out of the restaurant. Not too difficult to ascertain frozen freezer burned chicken no matter how pretty it looks in a bowl. Not upset just disappointed.

Yelp
This place is great! It's really cheap, (Like $14 for a TEN piece HOUSE roll?! What?!) Great service, and amazing house rolls! (They even restyled some current rolls!) Great decor too, feels really authentic. Lacks music, but is still worth the loss! If you're in Punta Gorda, (Or anywhere, really) You HAVE to visit! Would give ten stars if I could!

David P.

Yelp
Love this place! I order takeout maybe once a week. The workers are the nicest people ever, always happy and very efficient. Also the food is very consistent and delicious. I recommend the hibachi bowl, lots of food for a fair price and tasty! I highly recommend it here.

Chad C.

Yelp
Food was delish and the service was top notch. The ambiance is lacking, but I'll take good food in this joint
google avatar

Diane Z.

Yelp
This family owned and operated Japanese restaurant, was delicious! I had a jr chicken bowl and that was plenty- actually took some home! We also had the dumplings, which were very flavorful and stuffed to perfection! Service was fast and food was fresh and very warm when it arrived at the table. This place is a walk up and order, take a seat and they bring your food to you. Very reasonably priced. Friendly staff. Worth coming back to for sure!

Yelp
With the demise of Amanoto Japanese Restaurant in Punta Gorda (but good luck to Tony and his lovely wife for many years of friendship and awesome sushi), this place is the only Japanese restaurant in Punta Gorda. THE GOOD: Service is on the ball. You walk up to the counter, order what you want, and take the number back to the table. 15 to 20 minutes later, the attendant will bring the food to the table. No need to really leave a tip. Seems like they make a pretty decent Yum Yum sauce and teriyaki sauce to complement the dishes. I had the steak and shrimp plate. The steak was cooked to medium and the shrimp was a little bit overdone; however, the fried rice that came with it was very good. I also had the yellow fin tuna maki; the tuna tasted fresh and the portion was generous. THE NOT SO GOOD: The fried rice was a decent portion, but the steak and shrimp portions were minimal. They need to double their portions. I understand the importance of trying to make a buck but at least provide a filling dinner. The sake was overpriced, as was the beer. There is no ambience. It's basically sitting in an open room eating next to others. CONCLUSION: If you want, sushi or Teppanyaki cooking in Punta Gorda, this is the place you'll have to come. The maki is better than Publix. The cooked entrées are one step above the food court, but they are not bad considering there's not much else in town. I would suggest once a month or so, primarily for the maki. Note: There is no sushi or sashimi., only maki.

Yelp
Well sir u don't approach people with a attitude and make people pay for a water cup and you have problems of giving out samples of yum yum sauce but sir have a good day never coming again and ps. We pay for drinks lmao

Yelp
Food is hibachi or sushi service is fast not really an ambiance per say. It's open seating You go to the counter order your food they deliver it to your table.

William R.

Yelp
good service but food was very tasteless compared to almost any other hibachi place i've had and it immediately turned my stomach and i had to race back to the house to use the bathroom (might be a little tmi but this gave me the liquishits immediately) very confused on how this place had a 4.5 star rating.
google avatar

Denise D.

Yelp
Really good! My other favorite place for hibachi vegetable fried rice and yakisoba have really let me down lately so I was so excited to try it since it's so close to where I live. No going over the bridge. Staff were sooo nice and informative. I got a to go order of a shrimp bowl with veggies and extra zucchini and onions. They do NOT make the broccoli or veggies mushy. I make my own yum yum sauce but I know they do have a version. Not a fancy place, nor do they cook in front of you but who cares! I wish I could post another persons pics from my next door neighbor site . They are really good . I only took one star because I didn't see any beer or wine on the menu! If they have it, next time I'll definitely eat in!

Sarah E.

Yelp
Very impressed with this establishment. Clean, quick, fresh and delicious. I got the chicken hibachi bowl add vegetables which had grilled chicken, broccoli, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and fried rice. It came piping hot with a side of tangy mayo based sauce. A great option for good food at a great price.

John L.

Yelp
Excellent. Had the spicy shrimp sushi, shrimp dumplings and teriyaki chicken udon noodle. The ginger sauce was outstanding. Loved the sushi, not too spicy just a little kick if you're worried. The dumplings were also cooked just right pot sticker style which is more traditional with one side fried and not deep fried which we appreciated. The sushi looked and tasted amazing. We really enjoyed the food. Also very clean and modern which was appreciated and very comfortable. You order at front but then they bring your food to table. Also self serve drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great. The service was a little slow but they made up for it with the quality of the food. Seating at the hibachi was a good time for all. Cook was friendly. This is where the locals go. It's a very casual ambience.

Colton M.

Yelp
Food is good and fresh, service is also great the servers were very nice will come again!!

Brian C.

Yelp
The food is decent. But unfortunately there is a female cashier that is very rude. She has zero customer service skills. Her mouth/attitude is gonna get her in trouble one day.

Keith S.

Yelp
Yes fast service good food. Have been several times and enjoyed each time. Have had the hibachi steak and chicken. Wife has had sushi as well

Yelp
Clean, stylish interior. Friendly staff. Fast service. Food is excellent and cheap. I love this place and plan to return often.

Yelp
What a wonderful surprise! Wow food was delicious and portion size was huge! It was my first time dining at this restaurant but it was very spacious and service was quick. I will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Andell N.

Yelp
I will come here over and over again. The food is amazing with a comprehensive menu so you understand and know exactly what you're getting in your rolls. The place is on the smaller side but if nice and clean. And the service is quick and hardly any delays. Definitely an amazing sushi place if you ever get to craving it.
google avatar

Carly C.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal food. The portions are generous and the taste is always delicious. My best friend and I even like grabbing carry out and it's always been perfect. Five stars from us!
google avatar

Kurt H.

Yelp
Small but mighty. Tasty chicken and steak hibachi and delicious spicy tuna roll. I will be back. Cute setup and lots of parking.

Gerda K.

Yelp
Hibachi chicken bowl $11.50 (comes with fried rice). Doesn't come with veggies, that would be an extra charge. The rice was plain as can be. White rice heated up in a pan with sauce from chicken. Not the fried rice you know that has peas, carrots and a little scrambled egg. Chicken was dry inside ( all chopped breast), crisped up on the outside and smothered in sauce that is supposedly teriyaki but it doesn't taste like it. Honestly it was disappointing, tried a few bites and took the rest to go, my hubby ordered udon noodle chicken bowl with veggies and asked "NO MUSHROOMS" in it. They served with mushrooms mixed in, he had to pick them out 1 by 1 before he could eat his meal. Same teriyaki chicken was used in his meal as mine. Chicken or teriyaki sauce have no flavor, only udon noodles were good in his meal. Mine: neither rice nor chicken were good. $30 for these 2 meals with 2 miso soups $2.50 each (miso was ok).
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
Service was excellent quick and pleasant. The vegetable bowl was very good. Both shrimp and chicken were a little overdone in all 3 meals. But still tasty. Reason for four instead of five stars . The sushi was very fresh and served three people as an appetizer..The prices are good. I noted significant take out trade. I will be going back!
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
We wanted take out and decided here. The gentleman that helped me was really nice and verified everything in the bag. The food was yummy and there was plenty of white sauce! The only think I would say was a minus for us is the steak. It was fatty and not very good. We will definitely be back
google avatar

Shawn C.

Yelp
When visiting FL we always seek non-chain restaurants. We drove by Ichi Hibachi on our way to Fisherman's Village a few days ago and decided to dine in tonight, New Years Eve. The portions are huge, staff was very friendly and our meals were perfect and delicious. I would love to have Ichi Hibachi in CO, we'd be regulars!
google avatar

Kristin Marco R.

Yelp
Great service very nice staff and a great addition to Punta Gorda, FL. Food was wonderful. The Chardoney was pretty good too! Thank you.

Donna D.

Yelp
Food is excellent, service was excellent and the staff is grateful for your business. We eat here a couple times a month and it's always delicious.
google avatar

Isles G.

Yelp
We did take out from Ichi Hibachi last week & it was pretty good. The servings were generous & the prices reasonable. The place looked very clean & the staff was polite & courteous. It looks super simple, but the soup was really good. The spring rolls were missing something, I'm not sure what, but I'll skip those next time. Overall good experience. We'll go back.
google avatar

Bek R.

Yelp
We ordered the sushi and noodles, & they were really flavorful and delish... the waitstaff were friendly & prompt with our food.
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
This is hands down our favorite spot for hibachi in the area! Their clear soup is very flavorful and doesn't compare to what you'd get at other places. You really can't go wrong with any of their menu items! Always great service and food is prepared in record time.
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
this place was good. had lunch over the weekend. we started with the beef potstickers which were very good. My wife went went the steak, veggies and rice plate. I went with the steak, teriyaki chicken and hold the veggies. When served they gave me an extra cup of rice vs the veggies. the meals were very good, tasty chick, steak and rice.

Lynsey S.

Yelp
Picked up an order togo walking back from Fisherman's Village to my hotel. Staff was friendly, sushi was prepared quickly and fresh.

Paul B.

Yelp
What a wonderful surprise. We are big sushi and hibachi fans. We have tried many including Benihana, Nakato, Shogun, and others across the U.S. While Ichi Habachi didn't include the show of the others, the food quality was easily equal. We had Hibachi Chicken with both types of noodles. We also had the Hibachi Steak & Shrimp entree. The Hibachi food was hot, flavorful, and outstanding. The sauces were perfectly on point. The Dynamite Roll was dynamite, and the Sunday Roll was actually slightly better than that! Everyone cleaned their plate, including our finicky 6 year old. Highly recommended!!
google avatar

Aimee R.

Yelp
Nice place clean and food was very good for price, not a formal restaurant however orders are taken and service is quick and I really liked the mushroom soup that comes before the meal which is a first when considering I will usually not eat that because it's usually to salty or just tastes like it came from microwave! I was impressed and not expecting it!
google avatar

Nixon N.

Yelp
Pretty yummy chicken and veggie teriyaki bowl. Service can run slow (have waited 20 mnts before with patrons who arrived after me receiving their meals first), but overall a good food place. Would not recommend the sushi tho.
