Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Tokyo - Tokyo - The Infatuation

"In the last couple of years, Tokyo has seen a surge in standalone onigiri shops. But this new wave of restaurants making Japanese rice balls are swapping simplistic fillings for umami-packed, gourmet ones—and Ichijyu Onigiri Ichiryu Manpuku in Koyama is a shining example. They’re creating their own versions of new classics, like fried shrimp mixed with Japanese mayo and otsukimi soboro, a sweet minced meat paired with a raw golden yolk that looks like an eggy moon. Most onigiri can be eaten with one hand, but at Ichijyu Onigiri Ichiryu Manpuku, you’ll need both due to how massive they are. All of them are made fresh to order, and the owner is very sweet, willing to spend the extra time to offer personalized recommendations. It’s a bit of a trek from the busier areas of Tokyo, but it’s well worth the visit." - kiera wright ruiz

Food is super delicious and worth the wait. Did not have to wait long. Stayed in a airbnb in the area and saw it on the map. So glad we got to stop by! Great balance of rice and fillings! Ended up liking the stir fried bonito the best, but all were super yummy. Friendly staff and they have English menu!

Delicious handmade onigiri rice balls in a bright, clean small cafe, just a few minutes walk from Nishi Koyama station. All onigiri are custom made after your order with lots of flavor combos to choose from. The owner and staff are super nice! Update: I have come a number of times, I love the 2 onigiri set that comes with miso soup and pickles. Simple, healthy ingredients for a filling lunch and staff are so kind

Super nice people, perfect for a quick meal. The best onigiri I ever had, sorry Mom, a need to go! Aloha to the owner!!

FOOD 5 Order on the left side of the counter, pay, then take a seat and watch the staff make your onigiri. I ordered Tuna Mayo (my favorite) and Tantan. Both came wrapped in a sheet of nori. Served with pickles and Shijimi miso soup. Delicious. Can’t wait to try the others. SERVICE 5 Very cheerful, attentive, warm staff on my visit. ATMOSPHERE 5 Bright, airy but a bit narrow in places. Order, eat and go!

On a windy winter morning, the atmosphere is warm, accommodating and most importantly delicious food is served. The varieties offered will satisfy any palate. If you’ve only had konbini onigiri, do yourself a favour and try this restaurant. Beautiful counter and window seating is offered. English friendly.

My favorite onigiri spot in Tokyo. Super friendly. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to meet the “onigiri princess”. All the staff are welcoming and super friendly. They have take-out but I’d recommend eating in. I’d try the salmon with Ikura and tsukimi soboro if you can handle raw egg.

Came at a perfect time. Was able to find a seat. The staff were nice and friendly. They speak English as well. They have an English menu too. You can order individual onigiris or order their 2-set or 3-set that comes with a soup. The soup can be miso or clam. I went with the 2-set onigiri with clam soup. The size was right. The rice was perfect. There is iced green tea in the pitchers that you can pour yourself. Counter seating where you can watch the onigiris being made.

I’m not a fan of Onigiri but this was top top top notch. Really tasty. You can feel and taste the difference in the high quality ingredients used (rice and red miso from Kyoto) and each Onigiri is made to order with lots of positive vibes and energy from the master chef (she has a fabulous backstory - read her website). Highly highly recommend a visit of the beaten path to this delicious, unpretentious superstar of an Onigiri shop! Try the chefs recommendation and you won’t be disappointed!
