Where To Eat When You’re Visiting Tokyo - Tokyo - The Infatuation

"In the last couple of years, Tokyo has seen a surge in standalone onigiri shops. But this new wave of restaurants making Japanese rice balls are swapping simplistic fillings for umami-packed, gourmet ones—and Ichijyu Onigiri Ichiryu Manpuku in Koyama is a shining example. They’re creating their own versions of new classics, like fried shrimp mixed with Japanese mayo and otsukimi soboro, a sweet minced meat paired with a raw golden yolk that looks like an eggy moon. Most onigiri can be eaten with one hand, but at Ichijyu Onigiri Ichiryu Manpuku, you’ll need both due to how massive they are. All of them are made fresh to order, and the owner is very sweet, willing to spend the extra time to offer personalized recommendations. It’s a bit of a trek from the busier areas of Tokyo, but it’s well worth the visit." - kiera wright ruiz

FOOD 5 Order on the left side of the counter, pay, then take a seat and watch the staff make your onigiri. I ordered Tuna Mayo (my favorite) and Tantan. Both came wrapped in a sheet of nori. Served with pickles and Shijimi miso soup. Delicious. Can’t wait to try the others. SERVICE 5 Very cheerful, attentive, warm staff on my visit. ATMOSPHERE 5 Bright, airy but a bit narrow in places. Order, eat and go!

Came at a perfect time. Was able to find a seat. The staff were nice and friendly. They speak English as well. They have an English menu too. You can order individual onigiris or order their 2-set or 3-set that comes with a soup. The soup can be miso or clam. I went with the 2-set onigiri with clam soup. The size was right. The rice was perfect. There is iced green tea in the pitchers that you can pour yourself. Counter seating where you can watch the onigiris being made.

Wholesome onigiri experience in cozy environment with friendly staff. Onigiri is making a comeback from cheap convenience store food to proper culinary experience. Found lots of review about this place and it didn’t disappoint ! Ordered the 3 pc set that comes with a miso soup and pickled set. The miso is sooo flavourful and a wonderful accompaniment to the onigiri. Each ingredient-rich(!) onigiris are made on order and bar counter seating allows you to view and enjoy the preparation and shaping. Lady staffs are easy to chat with and speak english moderately so foreigners have no problem ordering. Overall love the easy going feelin and joy of taking a bite of onigiri and washing down with miso 🥰

Such a gem of a spot! We met the owner, who was incredibly warm and kind. She prepared the food fresh right in front of us, and the onigiri was absolutely delicious—simple, comforting, and packed with flavor. The lemon juice was a surprising but perfect addition that really brought everything together. While we were there, locals kept stopping by, which is always a good sign. It felt like a truly authentic and special experience. Highly recommend!

A lovely experience and a great place to get your onigiri fix. I walked in on a Tuesday evening and was the only person there. I ordered the two onigiri set and it came with soup and pickled vegetables. The salmon (しゃけ) and pork kimchi (豚キムチ) were both outstanding, and there’s just something about eating a warm, fresh rice ball that can’t be beat. The staff working there were also delightful, and we had a nice little chat. I will certainly make my way back here to try the other tasty flavors.

Went very early in the morning and they were ready for business. Very friendly staff who prepared food immediately for take away. Staff spoke English and had a small enjoyable conversation. Excellent onigiri, very good generous size and delicious fillings. Every thing tasted good and fresh! The salmon roe was most enjoyable

Delicious handmade onigiri rice balls in a bright, clean small cafe, just a few minutes walk from Nishi Koyama station. All onigiri are custom made after your order with lots of flavor combos to choose from. The owner and staff are super nice!

The rice balls are fluffy, warm and filled generously with high quality ingredients. The service is outstanding, staff were really helpful giving me recommendations and skillful when making the onigiri. Every bite was delightful. Thank you!
