Police Falsely Accuse Black IHOP Customers of Leaving Without Paying | Eater

"On July 8 the restaurant's manager called police to report a group of 'young black men' had dined and left without paying; officers later located a group of 10 incoming college freshmen walking to a transit station, some of whom produced receipts, and the manager informed officers that none of the students had been among the diners who allegedly skipped out. I am basing my review on comparing this IHOP to other IHOP’s. My son and I have been coming to this location for nearly a decade. I love that it has that nostalgic vibe, the facility itself is still an old school IHOP/Diner. They have freshened up their restrooms which is nice. The restaurant was clean. The food was what we expected. The service was ok. We will definitely go back.

Just went to IHOP and they had two young children in there answering the phones and their mother worked there but told me that the dining room closed at 9:30 p.m. even though they're open 24 hours. The restaurant smelled like marijuana and they had tables blocking the way into the restaurant. Will definitely be following up with corporate in the morning. Went by there at 11:30 p.m.

The food was... Well... IHOP. I got what I ordered the way I ordered it. They got it right the FIRST TIME. The Server that worked with us was very friendly, courteous, and helpful. She did a REALLY good job of taking care of all our needs. We gave her a big tip! Now for the atmosphere.... When you come through the front door, it is like you are walking through the galley. This gave the whole experience a really strange feeling right from the start. It is so unlike any other IHOP I have ever been in. (And I worked in an old "A-frame building" IHOP like this one as a teenager) They have a wall and 2 rows of itty-bitty tables down the center of the dining area. It gives the whole place a kind of "cramped" feeling. I personally think it would be better to remove the wall and put a row of standard tables down the center to give the place a more open look. Then, on checkout, I wanted to use Google Pay. I have used that at several different IHOP restaurants. They had Google Pay available, but not at the cash register area in front. I had to come in past the front desk, and all the workers in front of the galley and into a cramped little cubby where the servers enter the orders on a computer. That was the absolute strangest "checkout" I have ever experienced in my 65+ years!

Went here late night because they were one of the only places still open when our flight landed and they were close to the hotel. They only do carry-out when it gets late, but it's still so worth going here. GREAT burgers, cheese steaks, fries & onion rings. Don't be fooled, they're known for their great pancakes, but their other menu items are just as great! Second time going here late at night, and I'm sure we'll be back again in the future.

Some of the absolute best service I've ever had in an IHOP let alone any chain restaurant I've been to lately. Management is incredible and and our food was amazing! Everything came out fast and was very hot. Plus they have some of the best coffee I've ever had at IHOP.

Walking in at 9:30pm to find tables blocking the entrance to the dinning area and the smell of urine then was told that they only do carry out or delivery at that time. What???? Its only 9:30 pm.

We arrived at 8:45pm. The associates were so friendly and helpful. Didn't know that they only did take outs after 9pm. She sat us anyway. She was so pleasant eve though she did a double shift. Got the food quickly, no rushing either.

I've been visiting this location since I was in highschool and it's still my favorite location to visit. Always clean, always a full crew that's giving the best service possible. In over 30 yrs I can only think of maybe one 4 star experience I've had here, which isn't a bad thing.

My dad and I ate breakfast here last week. There were maybe 2 other tables eating. Our server jessica was very nice. Things were taking awhile but we weren't in a rush. It didn't really hit us til the end of our meal that she was the only server and she was pretty stressed. When I went to check out, she was on the phone with a manager dealing with an issue on someone's check. I realized she seemed to be the ONLY person serving & helping customers. Aside from the cooks I saw in back she was by herself. Idk what the deal was or why she was on her own but it was terrible and I felt awful for her. She was doing the best she could. Our food was pretty good. We both got basic breakfast,

This past weekend, I visited St. Louis and needed a quick, cheap breakfast. We ended up at IHOP, and let me tell you--this location? Small. Not a whole lot of seating. But the vibe? Nice. Everyone working there greeted me like I was family at a cookout. Now, I forgot my server's name (because I threw away my receipt like a fool i think), but she was amazing--super friendly and on top of everything. Then the food came out, and listen... I've been to a lot of IHOPs, but this one? Hands down the best-tasting IHOP I've ever had. Like, who is back there cooking? A retired five-star chef? Somebody's grandma? I need answers. And let's talk about this drink--she made me a strawberry lemonade that was not only delicious but straight-up gorgeous. I'm talking fresh fruit, top-tier presentation. It looked like IHOP hired a mixologist. I was impressed. Texas IHOPs, y'all need to take notes because this St. Louis location set the bar HIGH. Food? 10/10. Service? 10/10. If I still had my receipt, I'd be shouting my server's name from the rooftops. That girl was good. If I ever visit again I will be back.

WHAT A JOKE! Don't go here and waste your time or money. Service was terrible, waiters were lazy, one of the workers was on the phone with the speaker on. Walk in at 9:10 just for the waiter to tell us once we order drinks that dining room closes at 9:30. This location needs to close. Just pathetic.

We arrived and went be seated. There were at least 5 employee working. It was not busy. It took a couple minutes to be noticed. We were finally " seated"(the gal pointed to two booths down the way and said pick 1). We were brought menus and silverware . After 10 minutes , I got up and asked one of the girls if we could get a waitress . After waiting 3 more minutes we left. No one seemed to care. IHOP lost my business !!

You can't expect much from IHOP in general. I've spent many late night/early mornings at this IHOP about 15 years ago and that might be the last time the mops were changed out because the mildewy smell kind of takes away from the food experience. The hash browns in my burrito looked like Michael Jackson before he passed away. An employee was being really obnoxiously loud this particular night and we ended paying for the table behind us's food and they paid for ours because the waiter didn't know until after the table behind us left. Thankfully it was less but not the best experience. They all seemed overworked. 3 floor staff and one cook is what I counted on a busy weeknight.

The service was ok but that is all that i can say that was positive. The food was a gut-wrenching experience that I might expect from such a 3am greasy-spoon, but this was at 9:30 on Sunday morning. 3 adults and one child cost us nearly $90! It was not worth half that price! When I left I was surprised that there were other patrons waiting in line for this financial and gastrointestinal abuse.

This place use to be the best... Watch when ordering. They charge extra for everything. I wanted strawberries and banana toppings for my pancakes and they tried to charge 2$ for banana 2$ strawberries...

A friend and I had a pretty fair experience here. We were hungry for breakfast food at 4pm, so IHOP to the rescue. We were greeted and seated quickly. A waitress came for our drink orders and returned them fairly quickly. She took our order for food and we recieved our food fairly quickly as well. I'm not sure if the waitress was not normally a waitress, but she hovered quite a bit before we had our food then disappeared once it came out. Kinda weird to me. However, our food wasn't bad. I ordered biscuits and gravy with hashbrowns. My hashbrowns were a bit greasy, but not bad. My biscuits could've been a bit warmer, however. The area we sat in wasn't very clean. Like, it looked as though most of the tables were just wiped down without actually cleaning the salt and pepper or booths in general. I can understand when it's super busy, but it wasn't at all. The salt and pepper shakers were in desperate need of attention or replacement. In the midst of a pandemic, that's not appealing whatsoever. Our table wasn't dirty though, just wish the salt and pepper didn't look so...um, ick. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience. The food hit the spot and satisfied our cravings.

I just realized when I started writing this review that I was so mad about the food I already threw it away, so I don't have any pictures but I think everybody gets it. I'm fairly certain if I was high on glue when I was eight years old I could make a better meal than this, this is basically frozen food from the store but somehow done poorly. The bacon was very sad, the sausage links (as they call them) were the most depressing food I've seen in a long time. Hash browns extra crispy? They weren't even cooked. I don't understand this. Yes, we tried First Watch and they were too busy for the delivery. Okay. So we try this. And the food is SO BAD I don't even eat it. I don't try and pretend I'm good at knitting, or explaining astrophysics. But I can reheat sub par food with the best of them, and somehow, this place cannot.

So I'm just going to admit it. I am always honest with you. I really like an IHOP breakfast once in a while. Today my boyfriend agreed with my suggestion and we ended up at the South Brentwood IHOP. Wow, deja vu in here. Last time I was here was probably 20 years ago late at night after doing some things I would not mention here. Being that it's a Sunday they were super busy but we only had to wait about 10 minutes. I decided to go with my classic breakfast, the Funny Face and a side of bacon. It was everything I expected and more. Dessert for breakfast. Who doesn't think chocolate chips and whipped cream would be good on a pancake? Right? Bonus for getting to sample the colored syrups with it. Strawberry and Butter Pecan are the very best. Um yeah. I'll be back here!

Food ok , service mediocre, great orange juice. After finishing our food my friend ask for a cup of tea, first person didn't bring it, after 5 more minutes we asked again, 10 minutes went buy no tea! When we talked to the manager he said he'd talk to the waitress, she never came, finally 5 minutes later manager arrived with tea very apologetic and said it was complementary, nice ! Paying the bill we were told we had to pay for the tea, when we said no we got yelled at. What a ridiculous incident over a cup of tea! Never going back there again

I having been coming to this IHOP regularly for the last 30 years. I met my best friend here this morning for a breakfast, from the min we were seated the experience was less than pleasurable. We were sat right next to the kitchen when there were tables open at the opposite end of the small restaurant. We asked if we could sit by the window and we're told no, the have a strict rotation. Our waitress was sweet and took our order. When my friend received her soda it was flat, she had to ask the bus man to get her another one, he happily did. When we received our food it was not good, the chicken on the fajita omelette was fatty and over cooked along with peppers, not wanting to be Karen, my friend tried to eat it and it was just too gross. She told the waitress and she asked for some pancakes as a replacement. When she returned with the pancakes she told us that because she tried eating it they would only take 20% off her bill. The manager, Jaime, then explained she should have tried to eat it and walked away. We will never be returning. There are way too many mom and pop places in the area that are absolutely amazing! If you are visiting give them a try and really experience St. Louis greatness. Waitresses was great, Screw the franchise!!!!

The IHOP in my neighborhood closed after 50 years and we kind of miss them for a cheap breakfast. I wish they'd tear down the old building and build us a new one like this location. The inside is more modern, but still very compact and tight. They make use of every inch, but doing so puts the tables close together. It also makes the table tops small and crowded once your food arrives. However, IHOP serves up a good cheap breakfast. Their Breakfast Sampler gives you everything you'd want for your morning meal. You'll enjoy two of everything; eggs your way, bacon, sausage, ham, pancakes and a hearty side of hash browns. It's almost too much food, I always bring some bacon and sausage home for the dogs. I like my Hash Browns extra crispy and today when ordering I forgot to mention my quirky request. When they arrived, to my delight they were perfect. Crispy on top and crispy on the bottom too. So many diners serve them crispy on top and mushy on bottom, but not here. Your HB's will crispy top and bottom with moist flavorful taters inside. This location is extremely clean and the staff was attentive and personable. When we are craving our IHOP fix, this location is close enough to make us happy.

Just ordered a brunch thru Grubhub from the store in Clayton Mo. Ordered Short stack pancake combo with scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit cup and juice. Received two fruit cups and a juice, These people pay no attention to take out orders. Best to avoid whenever possible.

If the dining area is going to close early due to COVID than the rest of the place, it should be listed SOMEWHERE-on the sign, the the building, the website, SOME THING. The gentleman was polite, but it was. It very convenient when it was listed as the closest place to us to eat. Very disappointed. Never been to any ihop before. Don't know if we will return.

If you've been to other IHOPs, you know what to expect. It's not amazing, but it's decent, reliable, and sometimes you just want pancakes! For covid precaution interested people: I've gone by to pick up takeout a few times over the course of the pandemic, and the staff have all been wearing masks, but the majority (and sometimes all) have been wearing the masks below their noses (which does make me wonder how they're approaching other food safety issues, not going to lie). Your mileage may vary there.

The absolute worst customer service I've EVER had at an IHOP! For starters we seated and waited 15 mins before being acknowledged or placing our order. I was given 1 cup of coffee (with no condiments offered and on the table). I had to go find sugar for my coffee on another table. From here we waited 50 mins. With nothing else offered or check for service. I went to the manager who said his name is Nick and explained our frustration with the long wait for our order and not being offered any more coffee when others were being given carafe's at their table. He offered no comment. After an hour wait for our food it came and was all wrong and had to go back. So I waited another 15 mins to get half of my food order and another 10 mins for toast without the jelly I asked for! To make matters worst, the bacon looked old and had a weird taste. Needless to say I did not eat it! Told Nick about the poor service and bad quality and he said NOTHING but took my full payment! I'm just traveling through St Louis and if this is what the service is like at IHOP's here, I don't recommend you stop!Traditional Breakfast

THE GOOD: Diamond is a complete sweetheart. Every time I visit she remembers me, almost remembers my order every time too. Vibrant personality and she smiles through the entire time serving you. Best thing in the damn. Restaurant is her. If she's not there don't eat. She listens! My order always comes back exactly as I ordered it. All my substitutions were correct, my milkshake was so perfect. Whipped cream and all. I never have anything to complain about when she serves me. THE BAD: It's a guy in there and I don't remember his name, I just remember his face and fast paced attitude that he carries throughout the entirety of service. Every time I'm served by him, my order is wrong. The things I ask to substitute still end up on my plate, he reads back the order like the warnings on a medicine commercial. When you correct him, he gets an attitude. He NEVER smiles! He complains if you don't tip him while also giving bad service. He literally bad mouths customers in their faces if he doesn't get a tip. Doesn't even wait until they leave to start talking shit. Worst serve I've ever experienced. My milkshake was more milk than ice cream, no whipped cream at all, just loose and damn near watery. He literally rushes thru everything as if a sit down and eat restaurant is a drive thru. I think he forgot that tipping is based on customer service. If I'm treated like shit, you don't get shit. Simple.

Excellent service all around. The two managers(i'm assuming) with the red shirts were going around table to table and addressing by name. On my way out he asked me if everything tasted good, Ryan? He made sure to take note of my name from when I gave it to the hostess. That little effort shows how they go the extra mile in customer satisfaction. Food was amazing too and fast.

Restaraunt is small and it was freezing in Ihop but it is still my favorite Ihop to go to because the food is always great the hot chocolate was awesome and my waiter Areon was fantastic and very professional and my order came out in a timely matter even if it was busy on a Sunday morning definitely coming back on just the service alone great customer service!!!!

This may be the world's smallest IHOP, but I've always received friendly service and good food here. The aisles are very tight, and the table space at some of the booths leaves a little to be desired. It makes me feel sorry for the servers. There's always a wait here because it's in such a prime location. I've been here many times and have never seen it empty.

The food and service is as should be for a well renowned restaurant. Though at this location must have invested stock in winter wear and Styrofoam. The arctic blasts from their air-conditioning unit made it feel like I was an inuit seeking warmth within an igloo. My food was cold within minutes and I couldn't enjoy it the way I should have been allowed. Aside from that, our waitress was phenomenal and apologized profusely. The air was not her fault, so thank you Rachel, but no thank you CLAYTON IHOP - - -

They completely tore down the old location and rebuilt it a brand new IHOP. It's a little more open, and the new-ness gives it a cleaner feeling. My favorite is pigs in a blanket here! Get the Butter Pecan syrup heated slightly - it's the best!

I recently ate here on 5/20/19. I walked in at 4AM in the morning. After being seated, it took 20 minutes for the waitress to take my order. 20-25 mins later she came to me & said "I must've hit clear instead of sending your order to the kitchen. I also lost the paper that I took your order on so can I have it again?". I almost walked out but I was already hungry when I got there & starving after waiting 45 mins for nothing. I gave her my order again. The food came in good time. The bacon was undercooked. The hash brown portion was small. The waitress asked me if there was anything she else i wanted. I asked if they had any warm maple syrup for my Belgian waffle. She replied "no but I'll warm some up for you real quick". She put it in the microwave & FORGOT IT. I ate just about all my food except the waffle. She hung out by the register. Then when she did come back into the dining area(5minutes later) I waved at her & she gestured for me to wait a minute. She serviced to other tables. I got up myself & grabbed the syrup out of the microwave. Finished my meal. She finally comes over & asks "did you need something". YES, I NEEDED THE SYRUP I replied: " I just need my check." She looks down, sees the syrup & looked guilty & walked away. She said she was going to discount the meal 10% but it doesn't reflect that. I did however get a free orange juice for my horrific breakfast experience.

***Disclaimer: I am NOT a fan of most commercialized food places*** The above disclaimer also includes IHOP; however, I had a very satisfying experience Saturday night/EARLY Sunday Mornin. It had to have been around 3 or 4am when my folks and I--a group of five (5) in total--arrived. We waited for a table for what seemed to be forever. I believe there was another "big top" before us and waiting to be seated. After much frustration from the group, we were finally seated--and to my surprise, the restaurant was NOT packed at all, which was a bit disappointing considering our wait time. Nonetheless, as a current and retiring food-service worker, I understand waits, having patience as customers, and allowing servers, other staff, and spaces to recover and prepare to be seated. God, please bless the waitress, because... the behavior members of our group--including my indecisiveness--was... much, to say the least. (And with that, I increase my stars from "3" to "4") I had a vision of my meal and she did everything she could to make it happen! And, Lord, she passed with a 96%!!! I wanted chicken & waffles, which they had, but I wanted actual wings. She made the suggestion to order wings because they were good, and this was without my asking for them. Now, another disclaimer: I am NOT a wings person; I RARELY order wings. So I stepped out of the box and went ahead with it. I snatched up some Brioche French Toast with blueberries so that I can get my blueberry fix for the day. The BEST wings I've ever had! ‍ I believe people call them "trash" wings... AMAZING! I doubt I would order the Brioche French Toast again, but the wings have made their way into my heart!!!

Today, I decided to take my grandchildren for brunch and a movie. We agreed to dine at my favorite IHOP in the city. We pass two IHOPs to get to this location. To my surprise, MY EXPERIENCE TODAY WAS HORRIBLE!!! All due to the nasty attitude of the female server we started our experience with. This woman was dry and unpleasant to start but I ignored it. She delivered our food and failed to bring silverware or ask if we needed anything additional. When I brought to her attention that I didn't order the mushrooms in my eggs but instead ordered jalapeños, she became argumentative and insisted I ordered the mushrooms. I don't eat mushrooms so how does it make ANY SENSE that I would order them?! THINK!!!! After she disappeared under the pretense of having my food remade, I had to get up and go and ask for silverware and warm syrup because she didn't return for 10 minutes. I also requested of another "girl" with a nasty attitude to ask a manager to speak with me. GIRL WITH ATTITUDE ONE returned with my food, which was still not prepared correctly, while I was speaking with the manager. I explained my opinion is they have young people who lack customer service skills working and it causes an issue. The manager asked the server to walk away while we talked. After the manager left, THE GIRL walked by and mumbled something about being 34 years old. I hope she understands that being older only makes her behavior WORSE!!! I'm giving this place one star despite today's experience for the following reasons: 1) The female manager was pleasant and handled the situation with courtesy and professionalism; 2) The server that finished our service was pleasant and attentive; and 3) The food was good. However, I did request the name of the female server and a number for the corporate office from the manager. This information was never provided!

I met a friend here for a nice, quick breakfast. We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was warm and friendly and brought our coffee right out. We placed our order after talking for a bit and the food didn't take long to come out. I ordered the breakfast that included toast, eggs, bacon, and hash browns. My friend ordered the biscuits and gravy which were unfortunately very lukewarm and had to be sent back. They came back out hot but she didn't eat very much of it. This is a decent place for a quick breakfast to get you on your way.

INSECT ELERT This branch is the most disgusting branch in the stats As you see in the picture of their famose insect pancakes and the worst is the manager when we complained about it he asked us to pay the bill or he will call the police The insect was mix in the batter there is no way I can fake that.

Always can count on IHOP for a good hearty bfkt. This is a smaller restaurant so the lines can get long.

WORST IHOP I've ever been to. Please save your time & day. Waitresses all had nasty attitudes and the manager was even worse. It took them an 1hr/7min minutes to provide service and waters. Plus, reminding 3 different waitresses multiple times for the check, syrup, straws, and even to speak to their manager. After spending two hours in this HORRIFIC place, you would think there would be some discount taken off for the inconvenience. NOPE. Instead after going back and forth with the manger, she calls dispatch to "settle" things. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE. IT IS NOT WORTH IT AT ALL *Giving them one star is way too much credit*

Excellent food, service, atmosphere here. Our waitress was very nice and kind of looked like Beyonce. We had to park at the end of the street - parking is free on the weekends in Clayton, so that wasn't a problem. Don't park in the garage with the "NO IHOP PARKING" sign... whatever. Even though they were really crowded and busy we only had to wait a minute to get seated, and service was fast and friendly. Food was fantastic, I had something with three eggs and bacon and pancakes. Definitely will return on my next trip to STL

A very average dining experience. The place was crowded at noon on Sunday and staff appeared overworked. The food was ok. No Wifi though.

Came after a stressful day just to become more stressed. It wasn't busy yet it took my party of four 30 minutes to be seated and any other 20 to be waited on. Ordered chicken and waffles and there was a long hair in my honey mustard. My friend went to the bathroom at one point and discovered a server vomiting in the bathroom. When we confronted the manager she became hostile. Denny's will always have my business after this.

Always enjoy this location! Wondering why IHOP doesn't offer a military discount? I agree with other comments, the parking is a challenge. Notice a garage is close a deal should be made with them especially on the weekends. Guests shouldn't have to worry about parking on the weekends.

I came in there for an interview very rude lady manager she was very rude and mean to me I would never work there I turned her into the GM a lot of personal questions but you have nothing to do with the job what difference how old I am that has nothing to do with the job I could see why they can't hire anybody nobody would work for some people like that

I have been coming here for many years. I have never had a problem with service. Parking is a little small, and customers might need to park on the street. Restaurant is kind of small, as it is set up in a horizontal long shape. Food is great! I can't say anything bad about it!

Excellence served for a chain restaurant. Our waitress today was Donna, and she's awesome. Another very courteous waitress came to our table when Donna took a break. Food was good as usual.
