Ikinari Steak Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"There are a million reasons to go to a restaurant, and Ikinari Steak doesn’t work for 990,000 of them. Date night, dinner with your parents, catching up with friends - this place isn’t good for any of that. Ikinari is a chain from Japan, and they’re known for their affordable steak. They do a few different cuts (priced by the ounce), and, whatever you get, it’ll be significantly cheaper than the stuff at your average steakhouse. Walk up to a counter, choose your meat (and how much you want), and it’ll get delivered to your table on a hot slab of cast iron. And if you’re afraid this is some kind of inferior discount steak, it isn’t. This is quality stuff. So what’s the catch? Glad you asked. They don’t have chairs. That’s why you won’t be bringing any dates here. You eat your meal standing, and that’s how Ikinari keeps prices down. People don’t hang out as long when there’s nowhere to sit. And more customers going in and out = cheaper steaks. So if you just went to the gym and you want to eat a quick, relatively inexpensive steak, or if you’re really trying to mix things up, check out Ikinari. It’s a fun experience, the steak is great, and they’d get a much higher rating if you didn’t have to eat off a table that feels like a station at a bank where you fill out a deposit slip. But for the 1% of the time you don’t mind standing while you put beef in your mouth, it’s perfect. Food Rundown Steak They do ribeye, tenderloin, filet, and a mixed plate of all three. All the steak comes with corn (for some reason), and there are a bunch of sauces you can add at your station. Remember to chew. Garlic Pepper Rice Exactly what it sounds like (although it also has little chunks of steak in it). If you want a side, get this. A chef will mix it up in front of you, and you will be briefly entertained." - Bryan Kim

Food was excellent! Quick service, meat was fresh! Got the wagu beef which was extremely fatty, but prime cut. Would recommend!

We ordered the wagyu rib eye and attached are photos of the chewy fat we had to cut off. When we called the chefs over, they said, “It was good. Listen to us.” This is a tourist trap. Do not eat here.

The steak tasted really good. It comes with butter on top with veggies on the side. You can put the sweet sauce and steak sauce in to give it more flavor, as well as wasabi, spices, and garlic. For additional, you can get a set with soup and salad. Service was fast and they were very accommodating. Will definitely be returning.

Incredible steak dinner sets. Fantastically quick service with many great menu options. I went in the evening and it wasn't all too crowded, especially for shinjuku. Had bibs to cover your clothes while eating. I had the steak and hamburg steak combo set and I have to admit that it was the single most flavorful hamburg steak I have had since arriving in Tokyo. A must try for anyone in Shinjuku or around Tokyo, looking for a great quality meal at an affordable price.

Nice place for some tasty steaks. Tender loin was really good, but also rump and chuck.

Yelp
Steak at affordable price. I really like ikinari steak and thought the steak was tender and delicious. Would highly recommend eating at this chain during your time in Japan.

Yelp
We came by around 7pm and waited about 30 mins before we got a table. There is no seat..it is a standing restaurant. You order from the counter from the chef. He cuts the meat size that you want and cook it for you. The steak came on a sizzling plate with corn on the side. Rice and salad are extra. The food is pretty awesome here. Should give it a try if you are visiting Tokyo.

Yelp
A beautiful place for Japanese steak. I love the service here and experience they offer. With wearing an apron and having your steak sizzling on a pan is a fascinating experience. They also sell their famous sauce here which is very tasty if you want to try it yourself at home. The steak here is phenomenal. You can eat it with corn and rice which both taste good. I heavily enjoy eating at this complex.

Yelp
!THIS IS NOT A DRILL! This place is a meat lover's dream. My boyfriend and I were staying in Shinjuku the week of Christmas and were pleasantly surprised to find out there are tons of really good places to eat in the area including this place! FOOD: A restaurant where they literally serve you a plate with just delicious steak and some corn/onions on the side? YES. Don't come here if you're expecting chicken, salmon, or sushi. They don't mess around here with their beef. We also ordered some wine so we didn't feel too barbaric. The quality of beef here isn't outstanding but its good enough to keep a long line outside the door. SERVICE: Go up on the man with the butcher's outfit and tell him what meat you want and he chops it right in front of you. It doesn't get any cooler than that! LOCATION: As other Yelpers have mentioned, this place is standing room only. I think because they want people in and out fast. They offer a little bag for you to put your belongings to keep it from smelling like beef (sort of helps but its the thought that counts). Would I recommend it? Absolutely! No Vegans wanted!!

Yelp
I've tried the Ikinari Steak in New York and I was curious whether it taste better in Japan... so I brought my friend here to give it a shot since it was his first time trying it anyways. The line runs pretty quickly so we only waited for about 10 minutes for this location. Rib-Eye & Filet I ordered a rib eye and it was perfectly cooked to my expectations (Medium Rare) but my friend's filet was little under cooked since it was a pretty big piece of meat. We also ordered a side of garlic rice and our bellies were full at the end of the meal! Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference whether New York or Japan's Ikinari steak tasted any difference but I did enjoy the meal here in Japan. I would suggest to cut a piece of your meat before pouring on the J-Steak sauce! Try eating it with wasabi, it's a very interesting flavor :)

Yelp
**WARNING FOR TIRED TOURISTS: THERE ARE NO CHAIRS** You eat standing up but that's the real perk. There's pretty much no wait and you'll be in and out of the restaurant within 30 minutes! Orders of meat come from 200g, 300g, or 400g. For fellas, 250g+ should be a good amount of meat for you. For ladies, 150-250g is the ballpark range for our appetite! I don't think I've eaten over 200g of steak in one sitting while in Japan, so order wisely. I split a 300g Sirloin Steak with one other friend and this was good enough for me. Price was 2500Y total (or 1250Y per person). Quality was not the highest, but for the price and taste, I can't complain! Top the meat off with some steak sauce and corn. YUMMMMMY. Definitely a great quick bite to end our day. Highly recommend!

Yelp
What? A chain steak house in the middle of Shinjuku behind BICS camera? Sure! It was our last day in Tokyo and it was last minute shopping in Shinjuku. After we were done shopping, we were going back to the hotel to grab our luggage. We walked past Ikinari Steakhouse and was drawn in by the smell of steak! Yes, beef! Walk in and there are high tables without chairs, u stand around and knife and fork your steaks. There aren't any Wagyu choices but more of your traditional home grown and USDA (US) grade steaks. They cut the size according to you and charge you by the grams! The steak comes cooked to your liking with corn and grilled onions. Rice and sides, salads are extra. The steak here is decent. Nothing to write home about nor is there Wagyu steaks available. The service was good, the dinner hit the spot. Go where the locals go eat. Beer, wine, steaks, salads, etc!

Yelp
This place was fantastic. I can honestly say that I've never eaten steak standing up, elbow-to-elbow with the guy next to me. Thanks to Ikinari Steak, I can chuck that off the bucket list. You tell them how much steak you want (in grams) and they cut it to order. I wanted my steak medium-rare, and it was a perfect medium-rare. The corn underneath and the garlic and butter on top of the steak were delicious bonuses.

Yelp
Saw the line outside this standing only joint on my first day in Tokyo and decided I would try it at some stage. So feeling a hankering for good beef, I popped in late one evening. They have an English cheat sheet but its pretty self explanatory, take your number to the counter, choose your cut of meat and chef cuts and weighs your steak then and there. Choose from sides such as salad and rice and go back to your spot to await your steak to be cooked to how you want. Glorious said piece of beef arrives at your table on a hot place which melts some butter onto the garlic and corn kernels. Let me tell you, this was a great steak done in a simplistic manner. Let me warn you, it can get expensive as the steaks are weighed per gram.

Yelp
Alright, here's how it went down. My GF and I were vacationing with another couple in Japan and had just gotten to Tokyo. They wanted sushi, but we don't eat seafood. So, late at night, we decided to eat at the first place that had steak. We passed by Ikinari and were like "Yup, this is steak." My expectations were low. Honestly, the pictures of the sizzling platters looked like something that you'd get at Chili's here state-side and then stuff into a tortilla, calling them fajitas. But whatever, it was late, and for ¥3000 we could get 200g of the best steak on the menu (Japanese black beef sirloin IIRC). To top it off, we had to wait to get two chairs to use. I don't know why "standing steakhouse" is a thing, but... Japan. Quick note: make sure you annunciate the doneness you want... I almost got my medium-rare steak done medium-well. Had to correct the waiter a few times. For less confusion, use a percent instead (30% means medium-rare). The food arrived shortly after we ordered. Holy crap, was it delicious! Everything about the meal was great and, for the price, couldn't be beat. Our last night we went to a very expensive steakhouse and, while the meat was better, it cost about 4x as much. If you like steak, and are in the area (or, hell, even if you aren't in the area), make your way to Ikinari! You won't be disappointed. Bottom-of-the-barrel Japanese sirloin is better than most super-expensive steaks in the US. I never used to believe the hype about Japnese steak, but now... I'm ruined forever and might have to move to Japan for the beef alone. Thank you Ikinari (I think)!

Yelp
Who said that steak is hard to find in japan? This restaurant chain has excellent steak for a fair price. If you dont mind to experience a no chair smoke atmosphere you will be able to enjoy a delicious steak!

Yelp
Amazing standing steak restaurant in shibuya... Great quality bang for your buck steak and service... Came here after the robot show and super close to the station!

Yelp
Amazing steak. Super nice waiters. Everyone was happy. ESP my husband and older son. You can choose which kind and what size steak. The four of us are for 110,000 yen. Not bad for what we got!

G M.

Yelp
Great casual steakhouse! They are English friendly. I recommend the 200 gram Japanese beef steak! Dip it in salt and pepper instead of their steak sauce. It's delicious.

Yelp
Our last night in Tokyo and craving a steak after seeing the Robot show ! Waited 15 minutes to get in and you stand at your table. You order your steaks at the grill window and we all had the Japan beef sirloin which weighed out to about 300 grams. You order salads, rice and drinks from the waiter. Oh, yes they give you bibs ! The steaks come on sizzling plate thus the bibs. The steak were cooked a perfect medium rare as requested and melted in your mouth!!! I highly recommend this Tokyo steakhouse experience. All for about $35 per person. Don't go if you're looking for a seat down relaxing dinner !

Yelp
We stumbled upon Ikinari while in the area and decided to try it. It was our first time eating steak while standing and it turned out to be a lot better than we anticipated. First you choose your type of steak, then the size, and finally how you like it cooked. The chef prepares it teppanyaki style and it's served to your station. We ordered the rib eye with garlic rice, and highly recommend it!

Armaan Y.

Yelp
Excellent steak... they will cut the steak in front of you and make sure you are satisfied with the cut... very fresh and high quality Japanese steaks, comparable pricing to the US

Kelvin W.

Yelp
Nice place if you are craving for a steak :) cons: standing room dining only so not a place to chat and relax. Dont bring kids. Menu are only steaks, salad, wine, rice..
