Alright, here's how it went down.
My GF and I were vacationing with another couple in Japan and had just gotten to Tokyo. They wanted sushi, but we don't eat seafood. So, late at night, we decided to eat at the first place that had steak. We passed by Ikinari and were like "Yup, this is steak."
My expectations were low. Honestly, the pictures of the sizzling platters looked like something that you'd get at Chili's here state-side and then stuff into a tortilla, calling them fajitas. But whatever, it was late, and for ¥3000 we could get 200g of the best steak on the menu (Japanese black beef sirloin IIRC). To top it off, we had to wait to get two chairs to use. I don't know why "standing steakhouse" is a thing, but... Japan.
Quick note: make sure you annunciate the doneness you want... I almost got my medium-rare steak done medium-well. Had to correct the waiter a few times. For less confusion, use a percent instead (30% means medium-rare).
The food arrived shortly after we ordered. Holy crap, was it delicious! Everything about the meal was great and, for the price, couldn't be beat. Our last night we went to a very expensive steakhouse and, while the meat was better, it cost about 4x as much.
If you like steak, and are in the area (or, hell, even if you aren't in the area), make your way to Ikinari! You won't be disappointed. Bottom-of-the-barrel Japanese sirloin is better than most super-expensive steaks in the US. I never used to believe the hype about Japnese steak, but now... I'm ruined forever and might have to move to Japan for the beef alone.
Thank you Ikinari (I think)!
