"You’re in Italy, so of course you need somewhere for pre-dinner drinks and snacks. This former wine cellar turned wine bar in Oltrarno is your spot. The space inside might be limited, but it never feels too overcrowded, and it's about as fun and sceney as Florence gets—couples nudge their way to first base in the corner, and locals spill out of the cave-like dining room into the street, glasses in hand, when there’s no more room. They have interesting wines by the glass from under-the-radar producers, so skip a bottle and try a few different varieties. We love their capocollo and pecorino cheese from Pienza that hits just right with a spicy mostarda. "Housed in a former wine cellar, Il Santino is a tiny, cozy wine bar and deli serving up fine wines and top-notch snacks. Wines by the glass (six reds and six whites at any one time) come with a snack included in the price; a crostino topped with pecorino or creamy brandade di baccalà (salt cod), maybe. The list of wines available by the bottle runs to around 200 labels, many from Tuscany; the selection favors smaller, under-the-radar producers and avoids overpriced and overexposed labels. There are also 15 or so craft beers from Tuscany. Because of its size, Il Santino isn't necessarily a place to dig in for the evening; but it does make a great pit stop after exploring the Boho-chic Santo Spirito neighborhood with a friend or two." - Coral Sisk
