18 Outstanding Tacos to Try in NYC

"This swinging new spot in Eastern Bushwick serves tacos with Mexico City flair, which means smaller, thicker tortillas with plenty of filling. If available on the day you visit, the meaty beef cheek barbacoa is particularly recommended." - Robert Sietsema

Ilegal Taqueria. This Mexican street food joint is serving up some serious flavor and vibes. As soon as you walk in, you'll feel the chill ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxed and delicious meal. The prices are moderate, but food and drinks are freshly prepared and delish. Their signature Al pastor tacos are a must-try the combination of flavors and textures will have you hooked from the first bite. But what really sets Ilegal Taqueria apart is the great service. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, making sure you have an amazing experience. One of the highlights of this spot is the outdoor seating area - it's like a hidden oasis in the city. The full backyard is equipped with comfy seating, lights, and a fully loaded bar, making it the perfect spot to hang out with friends or enjoy a date night. The whole place has a very cool and laid-back feel, and it's super clean, which is always a plus. Whether you're a fan of Mexican food or just looking for a new spot to try, Ilegal Taqueria is definitely worth checking out. So grab a taco (or two, or three...) and soak up the laid-back atmosphere - you won't be disappointed!

I stumbled upon this gem by chance. This place is special. Walked in and was immediately greeted with a warm welcome! The drink were great. But the star of the show were the Al Pastor tacos, my god they were amazing I had to order them twice. Please never change the recipe. I can’t wait to return. I’ve been looking for a solid taco spot in bushwick and this is more than solid.

Fab service, drinks & tacos! Indoor and outdoor seating available, clean bathroom, and service was spectacular, super welcoming and friendly - checked in on us frequently, everything served quickly & correctly, will def go again. TBH, we were a little loud (lots of laughing 😅), esp after some drinks (margaritas & mezcalitos 😋) but everyone was cool about it - great vibes. Def recommend!

Brooklyn isn’t short on taco spots, but Ilegal Taqueria plays in a league of its own. Tucked in Bushwick, this spot delivers the kind of Mexican flavors that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about tacos. The beef cheek is melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavor, but the real stars? The tripa and chorizo tacos. For the uninitiated, tripa means intestines, and at Ilegal, they turn it into a crispy, flavor-packed masterpiece. I ordered mine extra crispy, and they were absolute perfection—deeply savory, rich without being overwhelming, and crackling with texture in every bite. They’re a must-try, and for good reason. And then there’s the chorizo—smoky, perfectly spiced, and hands-down the best I’ve ever had. If there’s a taco hierarchy, chorizo reigns supreme here. Oh, and the burritos? Phenomenal. There were four of us sitting at the bar, fully committed to sampling as much as possible, and by the end, we were stuffed with tacos and burritos—but every single one of us agreed: these were the best we’ve ever had. Beyond the food, the vibe is just as good. The simple, neo-traditional design keeps things laid-back but stylish, and the cocktails are just as dialed-in as the food. The staff makes you feel like a regular from the moment you walk in, and Mario, the owner, is the sweetest and funniest—always around, making sure everything’s on point. Ilegal is the kind of place you schlep for—I say this as someone coming from uptown Manhattan. Worth every mile. P.S. We even left with their cool hats. Happy customers all around. GO! 🫶

We wanted to try this new taco spot in Bushwick!! We’ve heard great things and we wanted to try. We walked in and there were no pastor tacos left, but it was a Sunday @10pm so I guess understandable. We had 4 carnitas, 2 barbacoa, carajillo and some esquites. It is a little too pricy for what you get. The people behind the bar were very nice and very attentive, but food felt like it was from the very bottom of the bottom, again… I understand that is Sunday pm however, food should be as fresh as any other day at any other time. We need to plan a better timing to hopefully taste what everyone is talking about. Sadly, nothing remarkable for us. I grew up in Bushwick and I hate that we can’t get an ok Mexican restaurant/ Taqueria.

My wife and I visited on a peaceful Saturday afternoon around 4:00 PM and had the entire outdoor seating area to ourselves – the perfect chill vibe! The atmosphere was serene, and the service was impeccable. The food? Absolutely delicious! Authentic Mexican flavors that hit the spot, paired with refreshing drinks that completed the experience. We couldn't have asked for a better afternoon. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for great food, excellent service, and a laid-back atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!!

Great spot, barbacoa tacos were really good, juicy, well seasoned and tender. Taco al pastor and asada were also very good. Great vibes and great service. Definitely go back and order in!

Yelp
Fantastic new little taco joint! Great to sit down and have a quick bite or for takeout. I had the Al pastor tacos and one cactus taco. It was clean, and the staff were kind. Highly recommend paying this place a visit

Yelp
I've eaten here a couple of times, and do highly recommend Tacos Ilegal. The tacos are very good, and are truly in the style of Mexico City street vendors. The service is very friendly and the decor is fun and modern. It's good to see that this business seems to have taken off. It's a five minute walk from my house, and I very much appreciate having them in the neighborhood. However, two things keep me from giving them a perfect five. My partner and I ordered an agua fresca and a soda, which of course, unlike a cocktail, don't require a lot of prep. The drinks arrived five minutes after the tacos were served, and only after I asked after them. Secondly, it would be great to see more vegetarian options on the menu besides the esquites, guacamole, rice and beans, and the nopales tacos. Ultimately, though, I do highly recommend Tacos Ilegal.

Yelp
I was dropping off 5 million packages at Bushwick Post next door when I passed this relatively new restaurant I'd never seen before. I decided to stop by and the verdict is...Yummy yummy yummy! I just finished my takeaway dinner and it was great! I ordered 2 al pastor tacos and esquites. The tacos were delicious, but that is expected when you see how they are made! The esquites were a bit too watery with not so crisp corn, but still tasty! I totally recommend this place!

Yelp
Love this place! Right off the Wilson L, which desperately needs some restaurants and I am so happy we now have tacos! These are legit, good authentic tacos. I've had the chorizo, al pastor, cecina, gringo (chicken) and what ever they have for specials, shrimp, barbacoa, etc, etc. Any tocos I've had here have been awesome! They also have a full bar, nice micheladas as well as a really great dining area in the back and a patio with fire pit.

Yelp
Great! When I first past walked Ilegal Taqueria I wasn't in the mood for tacos, but since I'm originally from Texas and always looking for good Tex-Mex in NYC, I took a glance in side. A woman, who I can only assume is the owner or manager kindly greeted me and gave me a full tour of the restaurant. I loved the atmosphere and the simple condensed menu. I was back in the neighborhood tonight and paid them a visit. The same woman was there and kindly welcomed me again. It's always wonderful seeing someone be passionate about their business. The Al Pastor tacos were fantastic. It was some of the juiciest pineapple I've ever had on a taco. For the price point, flavor, and location Ilegal Taqueria is a great place to grab a quick bite. I will for sure be coming back!

Yelp
Great vibe and friendly service. The barbacoa burrito is really delicious! Highly recommend this new gem in the neighborhood.

Yelp
ordered tacos for the first time from this location, delicious but too expensive because of the size and the ingredients, which are pork. I don't think they should be so expensive, but anyway, good luck in the neighborhood

Yelp
had been looking for a good mexican spot in the city for a long time now, came upon this one randomly and it didn't disappoint. knocked down a star simply for limited menu but realistically, its a taqueria, and they have tacos. great al pastor and their tortillas are amazing as well. too many spots in this city don't accompany al pastor w piña due to succumbing to white culture but this place refused to do so. i will be back

Yelp
Highly recommend. My husband and I had a lovely date night dinner here. Great food, great service, and warm staff! So happy to have it in the neighborhood!
