Portland’s New California-Mexican Restaurant Impala Is Open on NW 27th - Eater Portland

"Northwest Portland’s new California Mexican bar is finally open. Impala has started hawking house-made taquitos, chili-cheese fries, and braised beef enchiladas in the former Rae’s space. From the folks behind the Triple Lindy in the Pearl District, Impala was designed to serve the food of owner Mike Miller’s childhood — Mexican American foods like five-layer dip and ground beef hard-shell tacos. The restaurant delivers all of the above, as well as some of those vintage cantina classics, including enchiladas, carne asada plates with rice and beans, and burritos with optional fillings like grilled chicken or seasoned tofu. The cocktail names are something out of Mid90s, all named for professional skaters — the Tony Hawk is a classic margarita, while the Tommy Guerrero combines Vida mezcal with chocolate bitters and lime. The bar also offers shot-and-beer combinations named for skaters like Rodney Mullen and Lance Mountain. The bar will also serve brunch, hopping on Portland’s breakfast taco train — an assortment of three comes on flour tortillas, with scrambled egg, pork verde, cheese, and hash browns. Impala is also slinging a breakfast “brunchwrap supreme,” which folds scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and beans wrapped in a large flour tortilla. The rest of the brunch menu includes Impala’s versions of Mexican brunch staples — huevos rancheros, chilaquiles — as well as a french toast made with Texas toast soaked in orange, vanilla, and cinnamon custard. The restaurant serves brunch from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Friendly staff, meal was beautiful and delicious! We started with the 5 layer dip which came with what appeared to be house made (or at least house warmed). They were delicious. Then my bf had a burger and tots and the tots came served in the cutest little fryer basket! I had the bean and cheese quesadilla. It was huge and very good!

I am most impressed by the new ownership of this establishment. I had been to the previous restaurant 4 years before the renovations and I could hardly recognize the interior. It is very spacious and neat now. Before it was very crowded and chaotic. The braised beef burrito was one of greatest burritos I’ve had in Portland. It was very well put together and full of flavor. The three salsas were unlike any I’ve had before. The salsa verde was my favorite but the habanero was a close second and not too overpowering. The weekend Bloody Mary bar was a pleasant feature. They handed each of us a glass half full with ice and vodka and we added the condiments of our choosing off the back counter. It included homemade mix, bacon, celery, pickled green beans and asparagus, olives, Worcester sauce, Tabasco, and salt pepper. It was a great spread but not very aesthetic. This was the first week open so it’ll probably get better.

No Bueno. I think this place is geared more toward drinks rather than food. I had 3 braised beef tacos and they were terrible both in taste and price. The tortillas were store bought and the beef was greasy, ridiculously wet and somehow tasteless. There was barely a hint of cilantro or onion. If you're looking for authentic or even decent Mexican food, this place is not it.

We used to go to the last restaurant that was at this location, but we haven't been to Impala. This was our first time. Outdoor area was dry, had gas fires for heat and the building provided a wind break. We felt the prices were good and so was the food. We didn't go during happy hour, but we will need to. Happy hour is 3-7pm. Our server was great and very kind. We will be going back.

Disclaimer: This is the first non-takeout or non-drive-thru experience I've had in last 10 months or so. This place is great! The patio is cool and the staff is really nice and chill. They have hand pressed lemonade and gladly made grilled cheeses for the kiddos even though it wasn't on the menu. Would highly recommend!

I think of this place more as a lounge than a bar & grill. The food is great, service is great, the specials are interesting, and the happy hour menu is broad enough. I find myself here mid-afternoon and there’s always plenty of seating. They have an outdoor area, TVs, counter/bar service, and occasionally live music. Slightly off the main drag, but well worth your time.

The breakfast burrito was awesome! The salad was fresh and delicious! It is great to have a patio that does not have a lot of noisy street traffic. The place is very clean and staff was friendly. I’ll be back

Not exactly what I expected but it is a clean and bright dining area. Outdoor area with 6 or so tables. Sunday looks to have a decent draw of an older crowd. Might have been friends with the musician playing. Got the happy hour taco, it was as described and would order again. Nice bartender. Would probably pop back in to catch a Sunday afternoon game
